Well done him! He is spot on, whichever main party that returns to the centre and tries to bring the country together will win a landslide and be in power for a long time. Time for another hundred or so to stand up in the Tory party and 2019 can be rescued.
Unfortunately both parties have ceded power to opinion pollsters who propose solutions the people think they want, but the people answering them have not had time or resource to understand the related complexities involved in delivering them. This just leads to a cycle of continual disappointment where politicians over promise and under deliver.
I would say the centre ground is delivering Brexit rather than blocking it. Certainly what the polls suggest.
He is supporting his local MP who does not want to block Brexit. Stewart pledged to rule out revoke and 2nd ref, his only option was to Brexit!!! He voted for it, was the only cabinet minister willing to argue for it!
Why do people assume anti no dealers are anti Brexit. It is the no dealers who have stopped Brexit happening so far!
I think you know full well the majority of anti no deal Brexit MPs are cancel Brexit MPs, their voting records show that. While I disagree with the ERG their votes still wouldn't have passed the WA.

I never wanted any of this nonsense, and I think that Brexit is one of the daftest things this country has ever done to itself, but I think a soft Brexit is the sensible compromise. If the hardliners on either side want more than that it is up to them to lobby for it. and try and move us in that direction over time.

No I dont. The vast majority of Tory "remain" rebels voted for the deal.
230 Labour MPs voted for the Customs Union Brexit. 32 SNP MPs voted for Common market 2.0 Brexit
How many MPs does that leave who are actually anti Brexit? Not many at all, a handful of stragglers, the LDs and CUK. Oh and the ERG.
I know facts dont seem to matter, just preconceived regurgitated spin but your statement is simply untrue.

Yes and how many voted for something like Customs Union Brexit that most wouldnt regard as Brexit anyway, full well knowing that it would never pass. I know facts don't suit you hence suggesting the WA would have passed with ERG support even when the numbers tell us otherwise.
Keep enjoying your wet dreams. An incompetent government like this will never win even a small majority, even against a halfwit like Corbyn. Labour could put up a donkey for leader, oh hang on....

How bad does that make the LIb Dems then if they're miles behind in 3rd? Truth is no one knows when the election is yet, let alone who is going to win it.
Keep enjoying your wet dreams. An incompetent government like this will never win even a small majority, even against a halfwit like Corbyn. Labour could put up a donkey for leader, oh hang on....
But its not just this government is it ?
Jezza is now on his third PM within 3 years. Through a process of masterly inaction and decisive indecision the bloke with 2 A levels has seen off the best Oxford can throw at him.
“The last four days, we have hit our enemy harder than they have ever been hit before, and that will continue,” Trump said, apparently referring to the Afghanistan war and drawing applause from the crowd. “And if for any reason they come back to our country, we will go wherever they are and use power the likes of which the United States has never used before — and I’m not even talking about nuclear power. They will never have seen anything like what will happen to them.”

Damning him with faint praise. He hasn't really seen them off. The obsession with Brexit has seen them off. The only thing we can be sure of, thanks the Brexit madness is more uncertainty. We have to hope that eventually Corbyn will be replaced by someone vaguely acceptable, because that is the only way the Tories will ever return to being a sensible party of government, when they have received a good kicking form the electorate.
If Boris is Charles I as some over eager people put it, I wonder when he'll sacrifice his chief adviser
That did not end well for Charles 1st, it was also Cummings who built the Coalition that won the referendum for Leave
Past performance is no guarantee he is the right man for now. I dont say it impossible but even if the plan was to get no confidenced this week has not made Boris look good or strong.

You mean people who are out of touch with the electorate shouldnt run campaigns ?
I think the problem for the SC is what the English Court opinion was . Regardless of your position in terms of Brexit the opinion does hold a lot of merit .
Is using something to your political advantage against the law , is motivation important , if you follow the normal process but had bad motivations is that illegal.

Yes. Well done him for sticking in there during hard times, and for a good 2017, but the oft mentioned idea he has seen people off is just fatuous.
Does anyone know why the Government stopped the filibuster on the anti No Deal bill in the Lords last week?
I thought it was because a deal had been done? Labour get their bill, but the Cons get their election. Then I thought Corbyn reneged on the deal once it had passed the Lords to include the extension being granted rather than just the bill having gained Royal Assent.
Nice one. These idiots need to understand that the first responsibility of law makers is to uphold the law. If a solicitor were found to be inciting law breaking in others they would most likely be struck off
I had to laugh at Farage today. He has been in the media "demanding 90 seats" where Tories will step aside for TBP. I cannot see a major political party doing this even under Johnson and suspect Farage is just looking at either entering a negotiation with a position he knows will be rejected or if Johnson is badly advised he accepts and Farage on paper has a better starting point in those seats.
I don't think a Brexit pact between the Tories and TBP will deliver the seats its creators hope. If the Tories and Brexit party effectively stand on the same platform. Then, Labour, LD, SNP etc will probably use the attack line the unionists utilise against Sinn Fein/IRA. The opponents of Tories/TBP will just lump the two together and the Tories will have weakened their national vote tally whilst encouraging tactical voting against Tories/TBP. I don't think a duel platform will work in trying to attract Labour voters in safe Labour seats to support Tories/TBP. It just seems like a wet dream from people who live in safe Tory seats and do not understand how the other half live.
Why on earth did the Gov't mention this in its response to the petition ?
Because the petition mentioned it. The response is definitely clumsy but it's noticeable that those sharing this on Twitter (including Lewis Goodall) have excluded the petition itself:
Anyone can send a letter. Is it the presumptuous tone of the tweet that is objectionable?
Personally while I hate delay it seems reasonable parliament is not unprorogued until we have the definitive legal view. It's not like they would do anything else, the one thing they agree on they already passed.
Nice one. These idiots need to understand that the first responsibility of law makers is to uphold the law. If a solicitor were found to be inciting law breaking in others they would most likely be struck off
if we stuck to that approach homosexuality would still be illegal.
Why on earth did the Gov't mention this in its response to the petition ?
In fairness, the wording of the petition was "Parliament must not be prorogued or dissolved unless and until the Article 50 period has been sufficiently extended or the UK's intention to withdraw from the EU has been cancelled." So the petition itself did cover both prorogation and extension.
That said, the Government perhaps should have reiterated the official (albeit obviously bogus) position on the reason for prorogation, and dealt with extension in a separate paragraph.

yes, would you pay good money just so your kids can truly fk up the country ?
Nice one. These idiots need to understand that the first responsibility of law makers is to uphold the law. If a solicitor were found to be inciting law breaking in others they would most likely be struck off
Also, if they break the law to get Brexit, Brexit will be illegal and will be quickly annulled.

Would we? I see the point you are making, but the vast majority of votes in the Commons in favour of legalising homosexuality were presumably cast by people who had complied with the law as it stood but believed the law should be changed.

No, that is not analogous at all. Utterly ridiculous and insulting to people who had to suffer unjustly. We are talking about MPs *inciting* a Prime Minister to break the law for political purposes, not two consenting adults engaging in what comes naturally to them.

Or on the other hand a metropolitan elitist determined to do whatever possible to overturn the biggest vote in postwar history simply as she dislikes the result

You’re parroting trash tabloid headlines.
By the way Gina Millers case stopped the RP being used to strip you of your rights without MPs voting on that .
It’s amazing some are so blinded by the psychodrama over Brexit that they criticize a SC decision that stopped the government turning into a dictatorship!
(1) Cummings is extremely intelligent and a very, very good campaign director. His successes include Business for Sterling, North-East regional assembly, No to AV (backroom via Matthew Elliot) and of course Vote Leave. There are signs that is still there with some of his latest posters and slogans on Lab v. Tory on Brexit. He can distil complex arguments into simple messages that resonate with ordinary people, because he both understand those arguments and he listens to them - thus bridging the two. He also imposes an iron message discipline. However, he’s also a borderline sociopath, very much on the spectrum, possibly suffers from depression and doesn’t like himself that much. He is an awful choice as Chief of Staff and should have been kept in a back room and deployed for the election campaign only.

Well, it was a good election to lose. Major tried to hard. Should’ve just stayed off his soapbox. Hand the hot potato to Labour.
Of course it is. It is her business and every other citizen (subject if you prefer).
we have elected preserentatives to sort things out. Mixing millionaires pet projects and courts never ends well.
The courts have already recognised that it is her business in accepting her as a party to the (English) case, so whether you approve of her or not is neither here nor there.

Youre simply descending into the Brexit maelstrom. All you mean is the law should be upheld when its to your taste and should be challenged when it isnt.
If you stepped back youd realise the whole concept of bogging politics down in the courts is insane. What comes around goes around. The optics of an unelected millionaire using her cheque book to get her way just looks wrong. Its simply the inverse of Lord Ashcroft waving his wad to back his political pet projects. Also wrong.

Homosexuality has never been illegal.
I'm sure that was of great comfort during all those years.

Yes, chancellor John Smith announcing our crashing out of the ERM with Gordon Brown stood behind him and a young adviser called Ed Milliband would have made a different history!
I'm sure the High Sheriff of Cornwall has more important things to be investigating...
I'm not sure High Sheriff's investigate anything at all really - it's a largely ceremonial role. Presumably they will forward to Devon & Cornwall Police, and they will be the ones not investigating.
I'm always rather disapproving when politicians report other politicians to the Police in a very public one. If they are genuinely concerned a law has been broken, it isn't press release material. If they are not, it smacks of wasting police time and bullying someone for expressing a view with which you disagree.
(2) Boris risks failing on both fronts. He thinks he’s a liberal one nation Brexiteer but has so far only convinced those who used to work with him at the Spectator. He risks alienating his one-nation wing with extreme tactics, rhetoric on gender & race, and appearing to wilfully risk or pursue No Deal in pursuit of Brexit Party votes with a purist purge thereafter. But he also risks alienating the Spartans and Brexit party support with moves to liberalise immigration, insulting Farage and not being serious about No Deal.
He’ll end up being distrusted by both, as well as hated by the opposition parties.
I therefore think he could fall far harder and quicker than we might currently think, and by his own party’s hand.
Of course it is. It is her business and every other citizen (subject if you prefer).

as you wish but I suspect it wont just be myself saying one rule for the rich and another for the poor.

Biden is effectively running a ‘we like Ike’ style campaign, which is not entirely without resonance...
