Our offices are in Borough Market. The whole area is still closed off so we are not open today. If that applies to a bigger area around London Bridge a lot of people will be working from home today.

Interesting that we have not really seen her after either the Manchester bombing, or this one.

stop thinking about diane abbott and ask yourself why you refuse to give the police a decent pay rise and tax cuts for people who don't live in this country.

this is the party your voting for.

Quick Q - only tangentially related to the current situation.

Are services in mosques carried out in English?

I remember a number of years ago, christian services changed from being conducted in latin to the language of the local population.

Could this be regarded as a 'barrier' if the services are performed in arabic?

Why won't the tory party pay police officers a decent salary?

but the tory party gives massive tax cuts to rich people who don't live in britain

    can someone answer this please?

Only if you can explain this tax cut to rich people who don't live in Britain.

And while you're at it, perhaps you can explain what they're doing paying tax in the first place?

The parties should have agreed a joint statement, we're united on security.

But are we? Are the parties agreed on police being able to shoot to kill? Are we agreed on using drones to take out our enemies abroad that are planning attacks here? Are we agreed on using ultimate (nuclear) force to defend our nation? Are we even agreed to have that force in place, patrolling the oceans, ready to strike?

From the armed response team nothing more. The operational question ongoing is should the "baton police" now have discreet sidearms?
Is it, and come to think of it, how many police carry tazers? But from early reports, it was a BTP constable and an off-duty Met officer who tackled them, and there might have been some PCSOs in the vicinity, and I'm not sure we'd want to be arming those.

Embarassing interview from the culture secretary live on itv right now.

Culture secretary like a rabbit in headlights. cant answer basic questions.

    1) Why did theresa may cut 20,000 police officers?
    2) Why did theresa may tell the police federation on 20th may 2015 that they were scaremongering the public saying that people would be unsafe to terrorism?
    3) Why do you allow saudi arabia to fund mosques in this country?

    traincrash interview

Too many of our politicians in all parties are no good at what used to be basic political tradecraft: making speeches; being interviewed; building support for policy X.
Agreed. They need to be challenged to defend their positions and forced to get out and campaign up and down the country.

theresa may in 2015 telling the police federation to stop scaremongering about police cuts and the police warned the military would be needed in time of crisis.

theresa may lecturing police officers in link above.

If its more cost effective to use the military in times of crisis, why is that a bad thing?
because we've had 3 terrorsit attacks under mays watch and there arent enough police offices and every single terrorist was known to the police.
The police don't monitor them. That's MI5's job.
It occurs to me that we actually need to be putting a lot more resources into the Prevent effort.
Clearly it's impossible for the security services to closely monitor 23,000 individuals. It is far from impossible for Prevent to engage with that number. Some interventions will be successful; some won't - but in any event, we would better understand who out of that number is likely to be a real threat.

I don't understand... The police seem to have dealt with these events incredibly well. Why are we talking like they didn't?

What ever the short comings in intelligence - and no doubt we'll hear plenty more in the woulda shoulda coulda vein, it's difficult to fault 8 minutes from first report to three dead terrorists.
Difficult to fault in the terms of the operational effectiveness of what was available in London. However if the baton wielding PC had a sidearm the three terrorist would likely have been stopped even earlier.

I fear it's a debate we have to have. Where are the armed response teams in towns and rural areas?
Arming of police is a different question, and is arguably not really related to money at all.
We currently have strict tests for policemen who want to be armed. Many officers fail those tests. If we move to routinely arming police, we either have to accept that we will arm police who would have failed our current tests, or bar otherwise competent officers from being in the police.

So which is it? Reduced standards for firearms officers, or barring more people from the job?

    That's my tip!

    Mr Mark,
    "
Does your requirement to post here end when your contract ends 10.00 pm Thursday?"

    Leave the lad alone.

As Oscar Wilde nearly said. "It's always nice when Corbyn's kiddies give you the benefit of their inexperience."

There is a third way. Teleportation.

May not be cheap, mind you.

theresa may in 2015 telling the police federation to stop scaremongering about police cuts and the police warned the military would be needed in time of crisis.

theresa may lecturing police officers in link above.

I think we also need to get the communities involved. It's not enough for someone to phone a hot line and then say 'Well I informed the authorities' and forget about it. If there's radicalisation going on and known about then address the issue directly.

In muslim communities, great weight is put on the influence of the elders. How about them going round to these people, along with religious leaders saying 'You'll burn in hel/be buggered by Djinn for eternity if you do this'

It may have more effect than getting a call from plod.

What a dismal choice we face, I decided when the election was called I wouldn't be voting, nothing has changed my mind. No party has given me a single positive reason to support them.

I was prepared to give May a chance because she wasn't Cameron but she's every bit as vacuous. I have absolutely no idea what she believes in.

She believes enough is enough in a strong and stable kind of way.

And Brexit is Brexit, of course.

If only more thought the same way. Sigh.

As is her wont, May went looking for positive headlines in the right wing press when she decided very publicly to "take on" the "police union". It was not just the cutting that caused anger, but also her refusal to listen to concerns and to acknowledge the problems such large-scale cuts might lead to. There are a lot of videos circulating on social media of policemen predicting problems while May sits stoney-faced before denying there are any issues. Against an opponent other than Corbyn - who is not in any way credible on security - these would almost certainly guarantee her defeat if aired on national TV.

Probably unnecessary, but having backed Lib Dems at a little over evens to be under 10%, I put a smidgen (just enough to cover my other stake) on them at 3.9 for being 10.01-15% on Betfair.

I think I'm in alright position whatever happens with the Lib Dems, unless they dramatically exceed expectations.

Currently on Con 350-399 seats. Hoping they'll be in that range on the exit poll, then I can hedge at silly odds and just wait to see how the many tiny stakes on constituency bets turn out.

It is unfortunate that the political consensus in this country appears to be that racism or prejudice towards Muslim fundamentalists and their enablers is a worse crime than stabbing people in the neck.
Politicians are very happy to talk tough but very very reluctant to actually do anything. It is annoying. Maybe we should start by ruthlessly and indiscriminately enforcing the laws we already have. And chnging the law on speech from the current state of proscribed speech back to completely free speech.

Mr. Observer, if Ed Miliband were in charge of Labour, with a 2015-style manifesto, they might well be romping to victory.

That said, if the polls had been closer to start with, May wouldn't've called the election.

Quick Q - only tangentially related to the current situation.

Are services in mosques carried out in English?

I remember a number of years ago, christian services changed from being conducted in latin to the language of the local population.

Could this be regarded as a 'barrier' if the services are performed in arabic?

It could be but you run into a basic theological problem -- if the Koran is literally the word of God, and was dictated by God, then how can it safely (ie without distorting its meaning) be translated? This has also led extremists to attack historic linguistics as apostasy because if the Koran is the word of God who is timeless and omniscient, then it follows that the meaning of the Arabic language cannot have changed.

In the old days, the person who had been Home Secretary for 5 of the last 7 years and PM for the other 2 might have had the decency to attempt to defend her record over that period, rather than campaigning as an apparent outside insurgent under the "enough is enough" banner (i.e. "time for a change" to everything she has done up to now.)

The record that concerns me most of all is not the general cut in police numbers or armed response units in the front line. It's the inability of the back room staff to act where they are supplied with intelligence on those who clearly pose a security threat, with authorities unable to cope with the volume of what they have to deal with, in effect juggling priorities to put aside what are deemed to be low level risks only to find that the balls come crashing down.

This "tax cuts for the rich" thing that Traveljunkioe is on about

Would that be the cut on top rate of income tax from 50% to 45%?

The 50% that Brown jacked it up to weeks before he left office, having been content to leave it at 40% for his entire tenure in no 11 and then no10 - nearly 13 years?

The one that the IFS (IIRC) said actually raised almost no money?

    That one?

How many more terrorist attacks do we need to have before you start to think..ok we need more police officers on the streets.

    3 attacks under mays watch.

You do know that labour's plan for 10,000 new police officers will only become a reality towards the end of this Parliament as admitted by Diane Abbott. And by the way where is she - she is the shadow home sec
if diane abbott oversaw 3 terrorist attacks in 3 months you would be shouting at the rooftops but because you have tory goggles on you refuse to debate the issue and hold people to account
I have just told you under labour the 10,000 police will not be on the streets for the next 3 years and Dianne Abbott has gone AWOL. She could be home sec on friday so why is she not on the media
Good question. Even scarier is that Theresa May could be Prime Minister on Friday so why is she not on telly?
Where have you been. Full statement from no 10 yesterday and further statement after Cobra today
Why do you care more about your political party than your country?

What has your country done to you that makes the tory party more important?
I care about my Country to the point I do not want a trio of communists trashing our economy, putting the unions in charge, attacking aspiration and destroying business that creates the weatlh to pay for the public sector
No you care more about the tory party than you do your country.

your country has been attacked 3 times in 3 months and you won't discuss the elephant in the room; theresa may has been home secretary for 6 years and let police happen despite the federation telling her not to do the cuts. she went ahead. on 20th may 2015, she told the police federation to stop scaremongering about the impact of police cuts.

if a labour prime minister or diane abbott was home secretary under these circumstances; your response to all of this would be TOTALLY DIFFERENT AND MINE WOULD BE THE SAME

Because i put my country above party and you dont.

Out of curiosity how much more tax are you willing to pay to provide more funding for police pay ?

Why won't the tory party pay police officers a decent salary?

but the tory party gives massive tax cuts to rich people who don't live in britain

    can someone answer this please?

Only if you can explain this tax cut to rich people who don't live in Britain.

And while you're at it, perhaps you can explain what they're doing paying tax in the first place?
why don't you talk to your friends at the daily telegraph.
Why don't you answer the question?

In any case, my friends at the Guardian are more efficient offshore tax planners.
and hmrc and the tory party arent doing anything about tax evasion.
    .
Tax evasion is simply illegal. And they are doing something about tax avoidance:

Mr. Observer, if Ed Miliband were in charge of Labour, with a 2015-style manifesto, they might well be romping to victory.

That said, if the polls had been closer to start with, May wouldn't've called the election.

I don't think so, Corbyn has enthused his base more than Miliband did and added some LDs and Greens and a handful of UKIP voters but May is holding almost all Cameron's vote and adding almost half of UKIP voters and a handful of Labour Leave voters and SNP voters on top too. Indeed a recent yougov showed May beating Cooper and Umunna by slightly more than Corbyn, although Khan ran her a little closer than Corbyn

Politicians are very happy to talk tough but very very reluctant to actually do anything. It is annoying. Maybe we should start by ruthlessly and indiscriminately enforcing the laws we already have. And chnging the law on speech from the current state of proscribed speech back to completely free speech.

You don't see the difference between being prejudiced against those that stab others in the neck and being prejudiced against those that are appalled by that kind of violence but happen to be Muslim?
I'm sure he does. However there is a definite problem where fear of being accused of the latter can lead people to not be firm enough on the former, in rhetoric at the very least. As I like to put it, we're so afraid of overreacting, that we under react.

    A shocking prospect ....
One of the sad aspects of the reurn of two party politics is that AV becomes obselete.

Enough is enough. There is far too much tolerance of radical AV preaching on this forum. Vanillaforums must do more.

Why? What current Tory voter would switch to Labour on this who has bot already done so? In any case Osborne made the decision and by 2015 had protected police funding and increased counter terrorism funding

Mr. HYUFD, May's underwhelming. Corbyn does enthuse the naive and the far left, but he also fires up those who really don't like May but prefer someone seriously underwhelming to someone actively dangerous.

Anyway, we'll see what the result is.

Quick Q - only tangentially related to the current situation.

Are services in mosques carried out in English?

I remember a number of years ago, christian services changed from being conducted in latin to the language of the local population.

Could this be regarded as a 'barrier' if the services are performed in arabic?

I can find some articles back to the couple of years after the London Tube bombings in 2005 about possibly introducing a law to force services in Mosques to be in English. This would imply that at least some services are conducted in Arabic.

Clearly you're another 'take it from them and give it to me' type.
