I said if UKIP really wanted to damage Dave, they'd get one to defect just before the Tory conference, and one on Wednesday, when Dave's speech is due.
The atmosphere in Doncaster must be near ignition heat: ready to explode in rapture.
So you're all leaving?
Don't be sillier than you are already Charles, although I can understand your chagrin. However if you've never experienced the way a political crowd or meeting of the like minded respond to good news, you've haven't lived.

There is at least one more to come, we were told recently...
TBF it's not just Dave - the populist right have been on the rise everywhere and it's getting tough for a lot of traditional right-wing parties to hold together.
Just when I thought Labour had thrown away the election this week with their pitch of "Vote Labour for Tory policies delivered with half the competence".
The two parties really do seem to be trying to outdo eachother in attempts to lose.
Mark Reckless MP @MarkReckless · 21h Good to lead coach for Team2015 campaigning in Birmingham Northfield on Sunday+will be followed by our Clacton action day next Thursday
Makes you worry that other Tory MP may have said things in order to assure the whips while planning otherwise.
I'm assuming all those Kippers that slagged of Dave et al for reading PPE will criticise Reckless for reading PPE?
Not a signed up kipper, but whether he read PPE or not this is one hell of a speech
Sssh dont tell anyone but they admitted to having two others yesterday as well. But hey its OK because clearly they have recognised the errors of their way, denounced Westminster, adopted common sense and have converted to being a real person!
I'm assuming all those Kippers that slagged of Dave et al for reading PPE will criticise Reckless for reading PPE?
SeanT aside, I believe the problem most of us had with the Oxford PPE grads was that there was far too many of them and it gave group think. Clearly that doesn't happen with just one guy.
Besides, he also has degrees from the College of Law and Columbia, so it's not like he's only been immersed in one academic environment.
UPDATE in the thread header - Reckless follows the Carswell principle
They're just a higher caliber of moral principle, these Kippers.
Reading up on the guy's Wikipedia page, I admire the fact that when he once drank too before a parliamentary vote, but rather than just go in tanked, he excused himself and apologised publicly for the mistake, despite the obvious political embarrassment that would cause him.
I did predict this a few days ago, when the issue was raised. Another defection to be announced tomorrow ? Philip Davies would be my bet ! Reckless gave you a clue.

Actually I was just making a reference to your use of the term "rapture" which is an odd one in this context - although probably more true than you intended
I'm not particularly upset about UKIP. They allow a lot of people who haven't participated in the democratic process in recent decades to express their views, which has to be a good thing.
I think they would be a really terrible government and, best case, they facilitate a crap government and eliminating the most realistic chance to secure democratic legitimacy for (or exit from) the EU. But that's my right.
Cameron captain of a sinking ship ? This could lead to more Tory voters going over to UKP. Cameron is not going to resign or do a deal with UKIP. He would rather lose the election.

If he sets up a pact with UKIP, he probably loses more voters than he gains.

The business or pleasure joke he made at that dinner was very revealing. He has greater emotional antipathy to an English eurosceptic than he does to a Scottish separatist.
Can Conservatives move the by-election writ close enough to Clacton to seriously stretch UKIP resources?
Timing is controlled by the party of the MP resigning ie UKIP.
Don't think that's true. Conservatives moved the writ for Clacton, I think? Anyway UKIP haven't got any MPs to move the writ themselves!
It would be the party he was elected for and not any party he defected to that would move the writ. Even if UKIP had an MP in parliament, I don't think they can move a writ. I

Any MP can move a writ. Just as theoretically the date can be opposed and forced to a vote.
What happens in practice is just historical convention.
Chris Kelly and Gisela Stewart the latest names being floated...
Not a chance.
I don't think any Labour MP's would defect to UKIP. Some like Kelvin Hopkins are EU Sceptic, but they would not want to join UKIP, as they would disagree with many of their policies.

Agreed. UKIP's "More Tory than the Tories" policies are just too much, even for a Eurosceptic or immigration obsessive.
And members of the Labour Movement have far more "tribal" loyalty than self-serving Tories.

"What Reckless of him"
Pity for the Telegraph, they predicted no further defection just hours ago citing senior UKIP figures:

1. For the Sunday papers.
2. To torpedo the Tory conference.
Which means there might be more during the Tory conference.
Britain is over regulated and people are "ripped off and lied to" says Mark Reckless MP as he defected to UKIP
He should be safe for re-election though, I think North Kent was UKIP's most successful area of all in the Euros.
Sean T (conservative) is the first one that springs to mind
It's just a jump to the left.
And then a step to the right.

But it's the pelvic thrust.
They really drive you insane.
Let's do the Time Warp again.
Let's do the Time Warp again.
UKIP can't get any MPs of their own, so resort to stealing other parties?
Terrible news for Ed Miliband, probably :-)
The two parties really do seem to be trying to outdo eachother in attempts to lose.

Say what you like about Labour but no political Party, none, does "arrogant sense of entitlement" more than the Tories.
Who is Farage bringing on stage next?
Was Reckless one of the ones who'd denied he was about to defect?
----
Was he sober when he said it?

He voted for gay marriage, and against tuition fees for example.

Bloody Everton equalise in injury time, and the traitorous pig dog Reckless defects to UKIP all in the space of 10 mins

We know that private polling has been carried out in Kettering testing whether Philip Holobone would hold seat as UKIP candidate

I'm off out, and will be back around 7.30pm with the ComRes poll.
Labour never smear.
There is no connection between the child abuse scandal in Rotherham and Labour.
Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia...
The big winner from the defections to UKIP is Ed Miliband
Clueless. This is TERRIBLE news for Ed Miliband, somehow. Doesn't this bloke read PB or Dan Hodges?
Paul Waugh @paulwaugh 21h
Tory MPs who voted No: Richard Bacon
John Baron
Gordon Henderson
Adam Holloway
Nigel Mills
Mark Reckless
What happens in practice is just historical convention.
He's very busy sniffing out the next Tory rat to jump ship....
Vote UKIP, get a Miliband government, and no referendum.
There are going to be some very disappointed voters next May.
You remember what you were saying about nothing interesting happening when OGH goez on holiday.
Well, I'll think you're a lying rat-fink ;-)
And members of the Labour Movement have far more "tribal" loyalty than self-serving Tories.
And Labour are on the up, Tories on the down.
Highly unlikely.
