If Her Majesties Daily Telegraph is correct I will be taking early retirement before too long and moving from net contributor to net recipient, without a pdrticularly large diference in "Take Home" income (seeing as you dont pay NI or pension contributions on pension income).

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2024/07/23/rachel-reeves-presented-plan-pension-tax-raid/

Wot? If you pay higher rate tax and retire early what do you become a recipient of?
Largesse frpm the treasury in the form of healthcare etc.

Amount of income tax I pay will crater.

BTW don't pay higher rate tax as I stuff it in AVCs and pay 0% on it and limit myself to £50k taxable income. All goes in a deposit fund earning 5% virtually risk free that gets paid back as part of my lump sum in tax free cash.

Beat Trump by portraying him as an elitist coastal liberal who donated to Harris’ campaigns in the past, New York Billionaire who was a big party boy at Studio54, he’s a Hollywood man loving his role in Home Alone 2, he’s living in a $250m dollar compound in Florida (its worth that isn’t it?).

Someone needs to point out his cynicism that he was part of society, the 1%.

Trump rather defused that one before when Clinton tried that line. Chapelle has a very funny bit on it. He has crafted this image of having seen that world he is fighting to drain the swamp. Its bollocks, but now the state are taking to court, he can double down on it, he is now the outsider fighting the powerful.

NYT - Robert Menendez Will Resign From Senate After Corruption Conviction

The New Jersey senator said he would step down in late August, bowing to intense pressure from Democratic colleagues.

Are you still seeing much chatter and coverage about the Trump ear bashing or has it all been overtaken by the Biden/Harris switcheroo in the US media?
Well, the resignation of Secret Service chief following US House sub-committee hearing where she was belabored by unique tag-team of Jim Jordan and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez DID have something to do with it.

But other than that, you're pretty much right re: switcheroo. However, am sure attempted assassination continues to interest and motivate many - read that millions - of Trump supporters.

And is NOT a dead issue (sorry for bad pun) for Independents OR Democrats - just NOT methinks a reason to vote for Trump instead of Harris.

    OOOOOOH

    #New @Reuters Poll

    🔵 Harris 44% (+2)
    🔴 Trump 42%

    IPSOS - 1018 RV - 7/22

    https://x.com/PpollingNumbers/status/1815803619221950786

Albeit IPSOS is one of the most favourable pollsters for Harris with Trump much lower than other polls and who had her on 44% in their last poll too (plus a 2% lead for her is no more than Hillary had over Trump in 2016 when he won the EC)
IPSOS is the only pollster who has had Trump under 45% in a 2 way with Harris rather than a 5 way. So while encouraging for Harris supporters she has taken the lead over Trump in one poll it is with the worst pollster for Trump

    https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/president/general/2024/trump-vs-harris
I think you are heading for a huge disappointment as Harris 'Trumps' Trump

Indeed the old saying a 'week is a long time in politics' and 'events' have merged to change the narrative very much in favour of Harris
RCP has Trump currently on 48.8% on average, ahead of Harris on 46.6%
    https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/president/general/2024/trump-vs-harris
OK. Are only allowed to consider those polls favourable to Trump?
    On average
Most of which is *before* Pres. Biden pulled out.
That's understating it. All but 1 of those 10 polls in the average he is choosing to quote used fieldwork from before Biden pulled out. Fieldwork back to 5th July in fact.

On 22 July 2024, the FEI received a video depicting Ms. Dujardin engaging in conduct contrary to the principles of horse welfare,” it said. “This video was submitted to the FEI by a lawyer representing an undisclosed complainant. According to the information received, the footage was allegedly taken several years ago during a training session conducted by Ms. Dujardin at a private stable.

Somebody has been holding a grudge waiting for the worst time to deploy it.

The bilge pumped out over THREE posts by yesterday's Putin-Bot, before it was summarily terminated, was ridiculously self defeating. Seeing as how even flat-earthers who believe the Moon landings were faked, are gonna cotton on that the allegedly late Joe Biden is still tripping (sometimes literally) around.
    Body double, next?
Well, there's a story, maybe apocryphal, that after assuming full power, Stalin was annoyed by hear that Krupskaya the widow of Lenin, was criticizing the Man of Steel, for reasons you would likely understand and sympathize with her.

Anyway, Stalin asked the Widow Lenin a rather pointed question:

"You do realize, comrade, that if need be, we can always find ANOTHER Krupskaya?"

JD Vance is a real strange one, his politics seems all over the place.

To be fair, George H Bush said several really quite horrible things about Reagan in the 1980 Republican primaries, going so far as to say he couldn't work with him, as did Kemp about Dole in 1996. Both went on to accept the vice-presidential slot.

So a politician changing his mind when power is dangled in front of him is hardly new.

I wouldn’t trust any of these polls - the ones good for Harris OR the polls good for Trump - because this is such an unprecedented moment in US politics

In the last month a President has revealed his crippling dementia in an epochal debate, his rival has very very nearly been killed, the President (after much gruelling denial) has “resigned” and now his unpopular VP is abruptly mega famous and the new nominee for an election only months away

How can you possibly poll that?? I imagine many - most? - Americans have no idea what to think

My hunch is that Harris should be slight favourite (whereas Trump was a massive fave over Biden). But this crazy election year produces nothing but intense surprises and I’m not sure why that should stop

There is bound to be a Harris "honeymoon" period for a while before normal service resumes in the US (it won't stop three months of breathless puffing of her here as the only thing between the world and Hitler 2.0 though).

Whoever persuaded Biden to debate Trump on live TV *before* the final nominations were in was a genius though.
Absolutely. I am sure this was an inside job - someone on Biden’s team has known for ages he’s demented and incapable and this person was in despair - then had the brilliant idea of putting him up for an early debate

They sabotaged and terminated their own king
If you want to go full tin foil hat and it was an inside job, swap his meds out....we have never seen Biden be that bad publicly.
    Excellent plot twist

Also I don’t think you need a tin foil hat to perceive this election as being as sinister and dangerous as all fuckettybollocks. Trump is only alive because he turned his head for a moment in an unexpected way, and the security around him was so bad it’s forced the retirement of the seekyserv director
Yes, but for a fluke he would be dead.

That would have had catastrophic effects on American politics and civil order.

    Phew.

I commented on that first story yesterday, and those propogating it are beneath contempt. She was in a meeting with disabled people, including the blind.

You - a so-called Christian = may call that 'woke'. I call it polite.
I don't see why a meeting with disabled people automatically needs you to give your pronouns out and say you are a woman as if there was some doubt about it?
Go on then try and describe yourself to someone who can't see you without using your gender. If she'd said "I'm a person wearing a blue suit" you'd have said she was even more woke.

One thing in Kamala Harris's favour is that her aesthetic is very 1990s when America was at its peak. She's pre-woke.

If the election was just in California, Washington State, New York, DC and Massachusetts ie the parts of America still doing very well thanks Harris would no doubt beat Trump in a landslide but it isn't

Taking a month-long polling average for the US election right now on Trump Vs Harris is about as useful as assessing how fast you are driving using your average speed over the last hour - when you crashed into a brick wall 5 minutes ago...

And with Vance in charge a national abortion ban could be coming . The Dems should hammer this point.

This Supreme Court would declare nationwide abortion access unconstitutional but a nationwide abortion ban constitutional, if they had the chance.

Tetchy. This is the USA, so how are you an authority on the etiquette?

Also which is the more Christian and more electable statement of I have a pussy and I grab women by the pussy? Choose one.
It may be illegal but there is nothing in the Ten Commandments against it as long as you don' actually sleep with a woman not your wife and commit adultery.

There is plenty in the Bible saying God created man and woman, Adam and Eve, life is sacred and marriage is only between a man and woman for life though

When I had a pussy I had to grab it on occasion (usually by the scruff of the neck) to stop it attacking other pussies.

If Americans elect a pro life President and pro life Congress who campaigned to ban abortion then yes in that case a federal abortion ban would be legitimate

    Phew.
Yep this is a much better timeline.

Trump physically safe but other changes meaning there's a much better chance of him being defeated than there has been for quite some time.

    OOOOOOH

    #New @Reuters Poll

    🔵 Harris 44% (+2)
    🔴 Trump 42%

    IPSOS - 1018 RV - 7/22

    https://x.com/PpollingNumbers/status/1815803619221950786

    That understates the change.

With IPSOS we've gone from Trump 2% ahead v Biden (July 15th-16th) to Harris 2% ahead v Trump (July 22nd).

So much for a Republican convention bounce.
Biden very effectively squelched it. Brilliant timing of endgame IMHO; not too bad for a "demented vegetable".
It wasn't planned. Reality denied until the last moment, then a panicky change. That's no way to run an endgame. When my time comes I hope I will do better than that.

Opposition to tariffs was generally a Liberal position, for various reasons.

Chamberlain was an unusual politician in many ways, but most of his instincts were of the political left. For example, in this case his reasons for campaigning for tariffs were both to unite the Empire in one trading bloc and pay for old age pensions.

This makes me so angry and is a really shitty way of life that shows humanity to be full of absolute C’s.

As I wrote before - if someone had an issue with horse welfare they should have presented this at the time to prevent the risk of any other horse being subjected to the same.

To leave it until just before the Olympics is shittery of the worst order. I desperately desperately hope that whoever did this, because they did this for bad reasons not because they gave a flying fuck about horses, finds themselves in a sand school with a renegade horse that could only be stopped from trampling them to death by Ms Dujardin whipping it and she obviously has to refuse and the fucker has their pelvis crushed.

It’s a symptom of a nasty sneaky nearly society - like the videos of the racist twat who was funding the Tories - if you have video, and don’t like what you saw, report it then but don’t leave it until a moment of maximum effect for whatever gain you want.

It feels like a middle ground would have been a suspension / punishment post Olympics under the guise of because of the delay in this evidence being presented we are assured that now no current risk to horses.

It may be illegal but there is nothing in the Ten Commandments against it as long as you don' actually sleep with a woman not your wife and commit adultery.

There is plenty in the Bible saying God created man and woman, Adam and Eve, life is sacred and marriage is only between a man and woman for life though
Where in the Bible does it say marriage is for life?

For the avoidance of doubt, 62 years ago I promised Mrs C that, until death did us part, I would cleave only unto her, and I have.

(Just seeking some free history wisdom)
Opposition to tariffs was generally a Liberal position, for various reasons.

Chamberlain was an unusual politician in many ways, but most of his instincts were of the political left. For example, in this case his reasons for campaigning for tariffs were both to unite the Empire in one trading bloc and pay for old age pensions.
    Thanks.

I've been reading a little about US history and such things are clearly of interest in that context. More generally though it's interesting to see what was concluded when there weren't so many taxes and costs as there are today.

By endgame, I mean the last week. A panicky change would have been done mid-GOP convention, and without the planning clearly AND competently done with the VERY involved mechanics & logistics of the transfer from Biden/Harris > Harris/???.

Mega (as opposed to MAGA) millions $$$ transferred. More mega millions raised in 24 hours. From 0 delegates for Harris to super-majority of the Democratic National Convention in 24 hours.

Not planned? You - and me - would be damn lucky to do half as well!

Not historically, no. Tories/Conservatives were in general the party of landowners, who were not notorious for their desire to make bread cheap through dropping tariffs.

Joseph Chamberlain started as a radical Liberal but part of his move to split the Liberals and move towards the Conservatives (as well, of course, as his opposition to Irish Home Rule) was an increasing view that free trade left Britain vulnerable to the Yanks and Germans. He badged it Empire Free Trade but it was protectionism and brought him into alliance with the Tories.

There was one very early on in 1997 when Blair pushed through a Tory policy on Welfare and it was passed by 457 votes to 107 with 50-odd Labour rebels.
