Back for the first time in some time.

I live in Cornwall North. Minimal boundary changes since 2019, when it was a comfortable CON gain by 30% over LD. This time around, LD is 3/1 on, Con is 9/4 at WHills. Similar money on the exchanges.

Electoral calculus has LD winning here by 22%
UK Polling report has CON winning by 8%
ElectionMaps Nowcast has LD winning by 8%
    ElectionPolling has CON up 6%
    PrincipalFish has LD up 3%
    Economist has LD up 1%

On the ground I have seen no campaigners, and the garden signs are a little bit yellower than they were in 2019. Tory MP not thought of very highly - been very quiet on local stuff since he became a whip. Plenty of leaflets from both CON and LD, and two from RFM, all very boring. Everyone still hates labour here - the genuine trots I know are voting GRN. The seat voted 60% leave.

I think CON hold at 9/4 is value here. Any thoughts?

You're a brave man flying in the face of a 22% lead for the LibDems as indicated by Electoral Calculus who is not infallible obviously, but added to your comments about the incumbent Tory M.P. not being "highly tought of" this certainly wouldn't be one for me, even less so at what are fairly skinny odds.

Bojo. I forgot about him. Next venture will be opening a pub chain to rival Tim's Spoons chain.Farage will be the national area manager. Reform voters welcome. ERG Tories voters can pop in as well. Haters in general can come on down. For the people who want to top themselves a machine will be installed in each branch. Just leave your net worth to the chain in your will. Net debtors cannot participate in the scheme.

Bojo was a remainer I believe. I have no evidence to prove it. He jumped on the Leave bandwagon because being a opportunist he thought it would propel him to leader and then PM.
Maybe his pub chain could be called Weathercock's.

Not my supper, some poor traumatised woman. A savoury crepe I suspect

    Hmmm

    @BarbMcQuade
Some good news in SCOTUS opinion:
    1. No immunity for unofficial acts; pressuring state officials, fake electors scheme, public statements made as a candidate likely qualify;
    2. Immunity for official acts is only presumptive. Conduct must fall within “conclusive and preclusive constitutional authority.” Meetings with VP Pence still on the table.
    3. POTUS need not be impeached and convicted first.

    Not much good news there.

    Good luck on 2.
...Indeed, a long-recognized aspect of Presidential power is using the office’s “bully pulpit” to persuade Americans, including by speaking forcefully or critically, in ways that the President believes would advance the public interest.
He is even expected to comment on those matters of public concern that may not directly implicate the activities of the Federal Government—for instance, to comfort the Nation in the wake of an emergency or tragedy. For these reasons, most of a President’s public communications are likely to fall comfortably within the outer perimeter of his official responsibilities.
There may, however, be contexts in which the President, notwithstanding the prominence of his position, speaks in an unofficial capacity—perhaps as a candidate for office or party leader. To the extent that may be the case, objective analysis of “content, form, and context” will necessarily inform the inquiry. Snyder v. Phelps, 562 U. S. 443, 453 (2011) (internal quotation marks omitted). But “there is not always a clear line between [the President’s] personal and official affairs.” Mazars, 591 U. S., at 869. The analysis therefore must be fact specific and may prove to be challenging...

Also with 2) as official act in respect of "core powers" have absolute immunity.
The limits of "core powers" aren't defined - though the pardon power (for example) is a core power.
Also good luck proving wrongdoing, since any conduct which is an official act can't now be cited in evidence to prove an "unofficial act".

Nor now can a president's private papers.
Also regarding Trump's efforts to overturn the election:

"Because the President cannot be prosecuted for conduct within his exclusive constitutional authority, Trump is absolutely immune from prosecution for the alleged conduct involving his discussions with Justice Department officials."

That part of the case against him disappears completely.
Biden may as well offer Trump a pardon and be done with it.
Can someone reject a pardon? I never thought Trump would serve a day in prison, but the documents case was pretty clear cut so conviction looked likely, but other than the completed NY case the rest of it looks pretty unlikely to see an outcome, with years of delays and litigation to follow, even if Trump does not win re-election. So he has little reason to accept one.
At a minimum it ends the claim that it is Biden going after Trump in the courts. I think it may have some positive impact with the few swing voters as a potential olive branch. And it will save a load of time and energy from the courts when we know the SC will just reject whatever they do.
The latter may be true, but the first part doesn't work - those that believe that is what is happening won't 'forgive' that by the offering of a pardon - if a swing voter thought that I question if they really were swing.

Half the comments on here are basically

"The polls are wrong because they *feel* too different from 2019*"

without any evidence as to why.

Labour aren't going to win 350 seats just because that 'feels' a safer bet. Give some evidence as to why and then fair enough, we can have a good discussion, but at the moment, it seems like people are just seeing the polls and assuming they are wrong.

I suspect that people are placing their hopes on differential turnout effects.

But, as I see it, differential turnout is quite likely to run in the opposite direction this time round - so might end up harming the Tories rather than boosting them.

Why are young French women turning to the hard right? Here is the account, supposedly, from a young Frenchwoman in Lyon

"I am 26 years old, blonde, with light eyes, and I have always lived in the 6th arrondissement of Lyon, which is thought of as the poshest area in Lyon, and my daily life has become unbearable. I write this because, ten years ago, I could go out with my friends in the evening, at any hour, without being bothered, insulted, followed, or stabbed.

I mention stabbing because, three years ago, my boyfriend, along with two of his friends, on their way home, were approached by a group of men. They surrounded them, stole one of their cell phones. They tried to fight back, and my boyfriend, in spite of being a strong rugbyman, got stabbed, in the arm--while protecting his neck, which was the target. Someone tried to cut his throat.

As for myself, on a regular basis, men follow me, insult me because I refuse to talk back or because I say I have a boyfriend. One day, one spit on me. More and more, I am whistled at like a dog, or "ksksks"'d like I am a cat. Acts of this nature have happened to me perhaps thirty times in the past year.

Six months ago, we adopted a puppy. One evening, my boyfriend went out to walk him at 9pm, and three men tried to steal the puppy. Since then, we only go out in the evening as a couple, and I always carry pepper spray in my purse.

In our neighborhood, just in our block, there are three drug dealing spots, which work constantly. Day and night. With everything that entails: watchmen loitering outside our house, milling about, shouting, getting high and bothering people, especially women.

Every single one of the actions I mentioned (and they are only a part of what we have gone through) is the fact of men of sub-Saharan African or North African origin. A white man has never behaved towards me the way they have.

[snip: there is much more, she laments that this sounds racist]

Therefore, for your future, and those of your children or your children-to-be: cast the right vote.”

is this all made up? Perhaps. This is not direct from the woman “Lili R”

However, here is the thing. This is basically identical to the account I heard in Egypt from a blonde Australian girl who moved, by mistake, to the “wrong part” of London. Right down to the endless cat calling and the rest. The Australian said she could only get out of her flat by Uber, she felt immensely guilty because her sister was actually sexually assaulted when she came to stay

That was not 2nd hand evidence, that was her first person account of her own life, in London. And she only admitted to it when she was very drunk and tearful, she was aware it sounded “racist”

There ya go. That’s what multiculturalism is REALLY like for young people, especially girls, in big western cities

Back in the 90's I lived with an irish woman who was always very proud of how non racist the irish people were. We rented we got on with our neigbours well and it was a fairly middle class neighbourhood. We had white neighbours, sikh, hindu, muslim etc

Then we bought a house but we could only afford one between the two of us is a less middle class area. After 3 years she had enough of being spat on, called a white whore, white trash for daring to set foot outside the house wearing for example jeans and a t shirt. She ended up because we couldn't sell the place quickly going back to ireland.

Our originals neighbours were great, we got on well. Moving to a more blue collar area of immigrants yes we had issues. Most people here I suspect live in the first type of area not a poorer area so they see our original neighbour types not our subsequent ones

In light of today's forgery, er, ruling from the Supreme Court, here is a Tweet that has stood the test of time:

From what I gather, if President Jefferson had just ordered Madison to execute Marbury, instead of refusing to deliver a commission to him, at least four current Supreme Court Justices would have been cool with that.

You know, we all took the piss out of Mr Davey at the start of the campaign. But he's certainly managed to keep himself in the news, which given his party is behind Labour, Reform and Conservatives in the polls, is no small feat.

No doubt some will dismiss that as racist, however I doubt they would find the difference between neighbours that are white in a leafy suburb different in their attitudes to neighbours in a council estate that are white.

Just making a point that a lot of people who see no problem here with immigration don't seem the sort to mix with people in the poorer areas as neighbour

It's a quote from Father Ted. Ted coaches Jack to say it as one of two possible answers to any question a bishop might ask (the other answer being "yes".)
    Thank-you - that's a new one for me.
Presumably it will now replace 'Up to a point, Lord Copper'. But such is progress. We must steel ourselves.
Not really. "Up to a point Lord Copper" is a "well there's a bit more to it than that" answer. Ecumenical is when you are asked a question you have no answer to at all.
In the book, as I remember reading it (was a long time ago) “up to a point Lord Copper” actually means ‘No’.

It's a quote from Father Ted. Ted coaches Jack to say it as one of two possible answers to any question a bishop might ask (the other answer being "yes".)
    Thank-you - that's a new one for me.
In some bits of the world it has passed into the language, along with Father Ted's "It was just resting in my account".

A white man has never behaved towards me the way they have.

is this all made up?

My ex wife had a very similar experience in an edgy part of Tooting about ten years ago, when she was a teen, horrific

She is now ex Corbynite, she has “realised her lunacy”, she was “brainwashed into believing all that multicultural crap” - these are her words, not mine. She’s so right wing now she makes me look like a Lib Dem

This is why I firmly believe that young white people will go hard right, and it might be young women leading the way. It is likely inevitable. Who in the name of sanity votes to make the streets notably less safe for themselves?

Not really. "Up to a point Lord Copper" is a "well there's a bit more to it than that" answer. Ecumenical is when you are asked a question you have no answer to at all.
In the book, as I remember reading it (was a long time ago) “up to a point Lord Copper” actually means ‘No’.

Sounds like cities with epic levels of homelessness where people suddenly find themselves being a lot less understanding and liberal on the issue.
We didn't have epic levels of homelessness in the late 90's. We just ended up living in a very blue collar muslim area close to the mosque and they were not cosmpolitan accountants but blue collar plant workers and they expected women to conform to their social mores.

Are 4 people out of 10 really passionate about Labour in The UK. 3 I would say. In London Msnchester and Birmingham I would say 4.5. to 5.0.Taking them out of figures. 3 out of ten with the red wall and everywhere else included.

That's probably being generous, but I think we're discovering that nobody needs to be enthusiastic about Labour for them to prosper, provided that the voters loathe the Tories enough.
And when labour is the next government and 5 years later and facing a vote and nothing is actually better which is what I expect as they don't plan to change very much of anything? The tories will still rightfully hated, labour will be equally despised, the lib dems are also seen as more of the same, the greens are seen still as a joke as are reform? What then
Yep but to be honest that is 5 years away and a lot can happen bwteeen now and then. This is why the Tory attack lines of 'if you vote Labour they will be in for decades' is stupid. The size of the majority now will have no impact on how likely it is that Labour are reelected in 5 years. Lots of very informed and clever people were on here a few months back telling us it was incredibly unlikely, almost impossible, that Labour would get a majority because it has never happened before that a party so far behind in seats jumps into an overall majority in one election. And yet now we would honestly be staggered if that didn't happen on Thursday.

Rather than fighting the battles of five years ago or five years hence, it would be far better for the country if we fought the battles of here and now.
I am of the opinion we have had centrism for the last 40 years and it has landed us where we are now. Most Peoples lives have been getting shitter under centrism and its support for globalisation and we have now reached the point where its begun to affect just not the poorer 2 deciles but the lower to middle classes who find their pay stagnating but costs of food and housing ever rising.

Centrism does not hold the answer because its just more of the same policies, I despise the people who blame it on brexit because we weren't actually doing any better in the eu. What our direction should be I don't know. I do know politicians must start taking a view on how to better the lives of those in the uk however rather that selling out to who ever funds them else they are going to become ever more hated and that won't end well for them
I always thought Thathcherism was a break from the cozy post War consensus when Labour and the Conservatices thought the same?

Essentially, (to simplify) if was Keynesian demand side management no matter who was in charge, from 1945 to 1979, then there monetarism and supply side reform in the 1980s and early 1990s. (Which Labour especially, and the Alliance to a significant degree, bitterly opposed.)

It was only really post 1992 that Labour essentially took on board the Thatcherite message, that you can argue that a new consensus was formed, because there certainly wasn't one in - say - 1985.

    Does anyone actually enjoy Glastonbury?

    Yeah it’s fantastic

Been quite a few times and loved it

p.s. I mentioned on here the other day that the morning of the Brexit result cheers broke out across the fields. Absolutely true I assure you.

This issue has gone unnoticed because until now it has only happened to poor white working class women, and no one listens to them and they don’t know how to make themselves heard. And they know they will be called racist

But now it is happening to middle class young women and they are much more vocal.

I have no idea what it even means in that context. Is this some Sir Humphrey Speak amongst washed-up politicians?

SO in a political context, is Rishi Sunak referring to potential post-election effort to unite what's gonna be left of CUP with like-minded right-wingers leading, supporting and FUNDING the Faragists?

Why are young French women turning to the hard right? Here is the account, supposedly, from a young Frenchwoman in Lyon

"I am 26 years old, blonde, with light eyes, and I have always lived in the 6th arrondissement of Lyon, which is thought of as the poshest area in Lyon, and my daily life has become unbearable. I write this because, ten years ago, I could go out with my friitends in the evening, at any hour, without being bothered, insulted, followed, or stabbed.

However, here is the thing. This is basically identical to the account I heard in Egypt from a blonde Australian girl who moved, by mistake, to the “wrong part” of London.

    I don't know what's going to happen.

But I am looking for value either side of clustering around the mean.
And that's very fair. That's why I have time for the argument that the 150-200 Tory seats bet at the odds posted in yesterday's header, was value. Similarly, on the other side, I am still thinking it's going to be Labour >450 and Lib Dems second party, and believe the current odds on both are value.

But some on here are *insistent* that the result will be far away from the polls we are seeing - and yet aren't providing any evidence why, nor suggesting any value tips to that effect. They are also often doing so beyond any reasonable MOE level - Labour 350 would be a stunning stunning underperformance at this rate, to the point where you could almost justify Sunak staying on if he got that result.

Which is partly my whole point, we were in decline because keynsian demand side management had run its course. A state if managed decline was the term. Thatcherism was a radical shake up that sorted us out for a while. Now that thinking is entrenched when we are back in a state of managed decline. More of that won't fix us we need the next radical idea. I don't think its socialism, I don't think its reforms populism....but carrying on as we have is not going to fix anything

Law'n'order has not really featured as an issue lately, certainly not during this election campaign.
I suspect that may change with a Labour Govt potentially on the back foot, and Labour mayors running all the big cities. It's a definite vulnerability.
Suspect Starmer will see it coming and put in someone tough as Home Sec, as Blair did with Blunkett and Reid.

I've made the mistake of going into Greggs twice - on one occasion the loaf was inedibly stale, and on the other it was worse than the weird reheated Delice de France stuff you get in corner shops. Better to go to the in-store bakery in your local Sainsbury's or similar.

Gail's is fine - I like their waste-less sourdough, which is a bit different every time you buy it and is pretty good value.

There are other bakeries near me (Dusty Knuckle and Bread by Bike) that are better, but a bit pricier. Good if you're wanting pastries or something, but a bit over the top if you're just buying bread.

Sounds like cities with epic levels of homelessness where people suddenly find themselves being a lot less understanding and liberal on the issue.
Sounds like morons from countries that are shit and have no respect for women etc. As said, most on here kiving in posh areas have no idea what goes on in these places. Uncontrolled Immigration has brought more issues than benefits by the looks of it. There will be troubles ahead for sure.

Looking at voting patterns based only on age tends to obscure this because the younger population is much more diverse. For Le Pen to get 25-30% of the 18-25 age group translates into a much higher proportion of ethnically French voters.

The trans thing, and the threat to female safe places may feed into this too. JKR may be a harbinger of changing attitudes among formerly liberal/progressive women. Blokes, of course, most likely won't notice.

Subsample caveat and warning but generally SW subsamples have held up for Tories a little better than UK wide. At evens each I'd lean Tory for N and SE Cornwall, so it's a question of how persuaded you are by the slight LD betting tilt......
I'm tempted to agree. The CON vote here is demographically ancient and white cornish, which makes me think it'll be a stickier CON vote than elsewhere.

The time is 7.15 on Radio 4, time for "thought for the day from the very Reverend Leon of Camden.
OR you could address this issue, because unless lots of women are lying, this is a real real problem, and it also explains why young people are suddenly voting hard right - see the surging popularity of the AfD amongst the young in Germany
The western world is broken, broken by the NU10K types and rampant capitalism. When people see the likes of Michelle Mone profiting from Covid, while they can’t afford to feed their families, or get a medical appointment, no wonder they are angry at the current system.
The nu10k types are definitely part of the problem they want cheap staff to man their factories. My point was entirely about immigrants not being all the same, you live in a leafy suburb you meet different immigrants to what you meet in a poorer area, same goes for white indigenous people too.

Most who say immigration is great don't seem to live in poorer areas

A white man has never behaved towards me the way they have.

is this all made up?

Law'n'order has not really featured as an issue lately, certainly not during this election campaign.
I suspect that may change with a Labour Govt potentially on the back foot, and Labour mayors running all the big cities. It's a definite vulnerability.
Suspect Starmer will see it coming and put in someone tough as Home Sec, as Blair did with Blunkett and Reid.
It will certainly change if France goes hard right and makes life very uncomfortable for those North African/West African/Afghanis/Pakistanis who will be pointed in the direction of La Manche and told to join Les Rosbifs. Or else.

It would be interesting to know if the crime statistics back these sorts of anecdotes up, and the crime is worsening. If not, there are possible options:

*) Crimes are not being reported
*) The crime stats are otherwise faulty
*) Some of these anecdotes are untrue
*) The Internet allows news of the crimes to be spread more.
*) Disinformation is spreading this stuff for their own purposes.

Seems plenty of them are wealthy enough to get a taxi to Bristol Parkway.

Apparently there was a fiddle going on with people taking wristbands from people already in and selling them to arrivals at Castle Cary to £50. Others just scaled the fence.

Apparently it caused all sorts of chaos and overcrrowding. Whoever would have thought uncontrolled arrivals would be an issue?

It is definitely driving the hard right vote in Germany

“Crime is out of hand’: how young people turned to far right in east German city
Germans under 25 gave the AfD 16% of their vote in the European elections, with particular support in the east”

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/jun/14/young-germans-afd-european-elections

The utterly depressing thing is that I believe there is no moderate way of fixing this now. The young will eventually vote in hard right parties everywhere unless something saves us - like technology? Maybe

@Heathener will no doubt accuse me of exulting in this. Quite the opposite. I find it tragically sad and generally try not to think about it, it is too desolating

I would love the world to be a multicultural paradise with everyone holding hands like in the old Pepsi ads, how wonderful that would be

To be clear. When I suggested yesterday that should the LD'S become the Opposition they may push for compulsory weekly bungee jumping, I had no improper inside information.
Nor did I place a bet on Ed Davey doing it today.
    Worse luck.

    Q&A with Sunak:

Will you stay on as an MP? "Yes"

Will you stay on as party leader? "That would be an ecumenical matter"

I once replied "That is an Ecumenical matter" to a particularly sensitive question in a very tense client meeting.

Everyone fell around laughing and it was left at that.
I have no idea what it even means in that context. Is this some Sir Humphrey Speak amongst washed-up politicians?

What he actually means is: "That's for the arse brigade" ie the rump Tory MPs.
In religious context, "The adjective ecumenical is . . . applied to any non-denominational initiative that encourages greater cooperation and union among Christian denominations and churches." (wikipedia)

SO in a political context, is Rishi Sunak referring to potential post-election effort to unite what's gonna be left of CUP with like-minded right-wingers leading, supporting and FUNDING the Faragists?
He didn't actually say that SSI! It was a joke.
"That would be an ecumenical matter" is a quote from Irish sitcom Father Ted.

I am absolutely not anti muslim because I know a lot of them have been great. I think there is however a divide between immigrants that have intergrated and those in poorer areas that haven't integrated so well. For example where we brought a house we were the only non muslim family in the street. I got on fine with the neighbours, the girlfriend not so much because her arms and hair weren't covered

is this all made up?

Ask @Chameleon who is actually on this forum and is young and lives in london and has also spoken of these exact issues

Feck! Thats a shame, my estimation of him went up a bit when I thought he had.

Subsample caveat and warning but generally SW subsamples have held up for Tories a little better than UK wide. At evens each I'd lean Tory for N and SE Cornwall, so it's a question of how persuaded you are by the slight LD betting tilt......
I'm tempted to agree. The CON vote here is demographically ancient and white cornish, which makes me think it'll be a stickier CON vote than elsewhere.
Ditto North Devon. Will be surprised to see that go LibDem in one heave.

My ex wife had a very similar experience in an edgy part of Tooting about ten years ago, when she was a teen, horrific

This is why I firmly believe that young white people will go hard right, and it might be young women leading the way. It is likely inevitable. Who in the name of sanity votes to make the streets notably less safe for themselves?
Looking at voting patterns based only on age tends to obscure this because the younger population is much more diverse. For Le Pen to get 25-30% of the 18-25 age group translates into a much higher proportion of ethnically French voters.
Since when is French an ethnicity?
Since ethnos has meant nation. Means that in Homer. So say 600BC latest?

It also refers to official universal decisions of the church, the Ecumenical Councils. There are none of these universally accepted since the 7th century (some think earlier) because of course the church divides as soon as any decision is made.

However Father Jack may be referring to the Roman habit of declaring all its councils 'ecumenical' on the simple belief that in the Roman church subsists the entire of the true church, so he may be referring not to Nicaea or Chalcedon but to novelties like the Lateran Councils, Trent or Vatican II, which last occurred but yesterday in church time. That's the one which made singing 'Kumbaya' compulsory.

p.s. I mentioned on here the other day that the morning of the Brexit result cheers broke out across the fields. Absolutely true I assure you.

So don’t assume it’s everything you (pl) think.
Just middle class fannies that go there and pretend the ycare about the latest "it" ie this year it is Palestine. Full of halfwits.
If people care about issues happening in other countries and they have no children or major ties then go to the place in question and help provided they will not be shot in war zone. Brazil where I once lived, a great country! Lots of rich,, middle class and poor. Lots of people came from all over the western world and lived in the slums of various cities and helped people in soup kitchens and gave advice and help to struggling families. People go on marches here. How many of them actually go and help in the place concerned and learn how things really work there?

Thank God we don’t have a real Supreme Court on this country. If you ever wanted evidence of how dangerous a court without a sovereign Parliament can be look no further.

Surely Biden can just order Trump assassinated? For the record I am not saying I would condone this but I don't see anything that would stop him if he wanted to now that this ruling has been made.

Also does this ruling infrige on impeachment. If a Prsident can commit no crime in the eyes ofthe law then how can one be impeached?
