  • Israel's military says 'a hospital is not an IDF target'
The BBC's international editor Jeremy Bowen says he has received a statement in a phone call from the spokesperson’s office of the Israel Defence Forces, reacting to what Palestinian officials have said was an Israeli strike on the Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza.

The statement says "a hospital is a highly sensitive building and is not an IDF target."

"The IDF is investigating the source of the explosion and as always is prioritising accuracy and reliability."

"We urge everyone to proceed with caution when reporting unverified claims of a terrorist organisation."

  • A different take on the same thing;

Historically, we're moving into the part of the Parliament when the polls begin to move in the Government's favour.

Labour still outperforming the "winning opposition" average:

I guess it would be interesting to see the individual trajectories going into each line, though not so interesting as to make me do the sums myself.

Had ITV news on while waiting for the footy. I only have “telly” on when there’s live sport so it’s always jarring when I catch it.

ITV reported “we are just learning from social media that hundreds are dead at a hospital in Gaza after it was hit by Israeli air strikes”.

And itv won’t be alone. That is now the truth, no matter what the facts of the matter of this horrific incident eventually turn out to be.

  • This hospital disaster. One of two things has happened:
    1. Israel had bombed it. Massive condemnation internationally. Makes acting quite difficult
    2. Hamas blew it up themselves (a failed rocket launch blowing it up has been blamed). Makes Israel more determined than ever to smash Hamas, likely with the international community cheering them on

From the official Israel Twitter Account (with video)...

From the analysis of the operational systems of the IDF, an enemy rocket barrage was carried out towards Israel, which passed through the vicinity of the hospital when it was hit.

According to intelligence information, from several sources we have, the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization is responsible for the failed shooting that hit the hospital.

Downing Street have announced that they do not think the Israeli visit will be particularly important.

'The truth is, that everybody just think Sunak's a bit of a dick,' said a spokesman 'so his decision to go to Israel is not likely to sway any minds on the subject my way or another.'

This message was immediately countered by Jacob Rees-Mogg declaring that Sunak was the most important person in the world and the universe revolves around him because he was the spawn of Satan. "He will cause the death of the universe if he goes to Israel by making Hamas blow up something else and the Israelis airstrike the USS Gerald R Ford, "said Rees-Mogg, trying not to look like the complete twat he undoubtedly is and failing miserably.

Keir Starmer, on being asked to comment, said the whole thing was just an indictment of Sunak's Israeli policy and he would have gone to Gaza several weeks before he even knew the attack was about to happen.

There was a rather marvellous little book I came across and lost, years ago. It was by a clerk in the City on the eve of 1914, and about his experiences in the war.

There were brilliant descriptions of the hectic rate of trading - sometime several times a day! And how as August 1914 came on, he went with the manager of his little firm to a meeting with the management of other firms to come to a common view - which was then passed up to the Big Houses. Who in turn aggregated the View Of The City.... and went to No. 10 to voice their concerns.

So the BBC has decided it was an Israeli strike then? I’m guessing they don’t have inside information and are guessing, so I’m a little surprised at the headline they are using. Might be more prudent to keep some doubt?

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/oct/17/captain-tom-moore-family-defend-home-spa

'Captain Tom Moore’s family have defended the construction of an oversized spa pool complex in their home that has been earmarked for demolition, saying it could provide rehabilitation sessions for elderly people.

A council appeal hearing on Tuesday heard how Hannah Ingram-Moore and her husband, Colin, applied in 2021 for permission to build a Captain Tom Foundation building in the grounds of their Bedfordshire home.

An L-shaped building was approved but the couple opted to build a larger C-shaped building containing a spa pool instead. When they submitted a retrospective application in 2022, the planning authority refused. [...]

The chartered surveyor James Paynter, for the appellants, said the scheme had “evolved” to include the spa pool.

He said: “It was felt that a larger building could provide this extra space for this extra facility going forward. The spa pool has the opportunity to offer rehabilitation sessions for elderly people in the area.

“They want to offer one-to-one sessions, only on a once or twice per week basis. They felt this extra limb to create a C-shape was needed to create this facility.”'

Outing yourself as not a Harry Potter obsessive, or was that a cunning mistake to make us think that?

The thing that doesn't add up for me at least.

Didn't the Israelis advise for the hospital to be evacuated, they'd only do that if they were planning on bombing it?

I imagine Israel will be asked to show receipts, at very least to international partners.
