I hate Putin and I think the Queen stuff is now ridiculous. Come at me

i dont think thats allowed...if you are slightly against the monarchy you are obviously pro Putin according to some on here
People seem to be calling you a troll because they don’t have anything to actually debate you with, pathetic.
yes and i havent even mentioned Putin once if you look at my posts.....
Horse clearly isn't a troll because he's been here for years and we know something of his foibles.

thart may or may not be a troll but he is newly arrived and he punctuates and capitalises in a very similar manner to some we have had from Russia in the past. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt for now and see what happens
I feel slightly responsible for him because he leapt into action when I posted some innocent (I thought) musings about the onlookers as HMQ went BP to P of W. I can't help seeing parallels between his findings of racism in the UK and a well known tyranny's diagnosis of Nazism in countries it proposes to invade.
In general I think we should refrain from the troll-hunting stuff, as it can act as a deterrent against legitimate posters expressing views that they're perfectly entitled to hold. It's one of those irregular verbs:

I am the epitome of moderate opinion
    You are batshit crazy
    He is a troll
You are right of course. All we are seeing here is low effort contrarianism.
    Oh no we're not.
    You're both wrong about that.
I know ****ing Sainsburys were trying to push mince pies at me yesterday but this is just not Christmas yet.
I like mince pies, wish you could get them all year round. Also blue Stilton is my favourite cheese (actually you can get that all year, it just plummets in price in December).
Me too, which is the problem.
I buy mincemeat and puddings in bulk after Christmas when they cost literally pennies and then just have them as and when.
Seconded (on the puddings anyway). I love a Christmas Pudding in July.

That’s not correct. They will simply stop people joining at all on Saturday evening. Those in the queue now (i.e. those wanting to do so) will be able to view it.

Top class London hotels doing very nicely for the funeral. The Savoy, Mandarin, Claridges etc. are quoting about £1300 per night for ordinary rooms, up from maybe £600 before.

The only "5 star" hotel I've ever stayed in in London, which was not very five star, is quoting £290 up from the usual £110 or so.

which is that last hotel if you arent keeping it a secret for yourself? not heading to london this weekend but we do like to. would you recommend it?
The Chilworth, London Paddington. Perpetually the cheapest "5 star" in London. I stayed during the pandemic for £65. It's basically four and a bit star. Excellent (and cheap) Indian small-plates restaurant off the lobby though.
many thanks. I'll check it out for next time we visit. we dont normally do 5 stars, or even 4. the hotel we used to use never reopened after the pandemic. was pretty basic but we liked it and the location.
Now that we have online review sites, finding a clean and decent three star somewhere like Victoria is actually quite easy. I hate to think what it must have been like before the internet. Thankfully that was before my time.
I used the Which and annual AA guides - the former in particular. But there were obvious hiccups with a book published up to 2 years before you did the planning.

    Tory remainers massively overrepresented lol.
  • yet another vicious attack on one of His Majesty's hard-working ministers, from the rabidly anti-British New York Times:

NYT - U.K. Health Ministry Wants No Oxford Commas. Period.
The directive discourages the use of the contentious grammatical device, and also encourages employees to be “positive” and to avoid “jargon.”

LONDON — The government department that oversees Britain’s state-run health care system is confronting a number of urgent problems: too many unfilled positions for doctors and nurses, too many patients waiting for treatment, too many aging hospitals — and, according to a new directive, too many commas.

The Department of Health and Social Care, which is under new leadership after Liz Truss became prime minister earlier this month, has told its employees to avoid using the Oxford comma — the contentious second comma in a series like “A, B, and C.” . . .

Ms. Coffey . . . has made no secret of her distaste for the Oxford comma, with social media posts from more than a decade ago making clear where she stands.

In 2011, she wrote on Twitter that she “cannot bear it and constantly remove it,” and two years later said in separate posts that “I abhor the Oxford comma and refuse to use it” and referred to it as “one of my pet hates.”

Although it is associated with the English city of Oxford, the Oxford comma is not actually considered standard in British English. It is much more widespread in the United States, although American news organizations tend to leave the second comma out (that includes The New York Times, whose style guide advises that it should not be used unless a sentence is otherwise confusing without it). . . .\

Defenders of the comma will point to the value in its precision. In 2018, a dairy in Maine resolved an overtime dispute with its drivers by agreeing to pay $5 million in a case that hinged on the absence of an Oxford comma in state law. . . .

the 4am slot tonight is "fully booked" by people in the queue already. and they deserve it more than some keyboard jockey who can hit "book now" faster than someone else.

Right, this was the conclusion I came to -- you have to ration access on some basis, and the physical-queue method at least prioritises those who care deeply enough to give up a lot of their time to it; plus the basis for the rationing is clearly visible.

The stunning success of Ukraine’s recent counteroffensive has exposed the rotten reality behind Russia’s reputation as a military superpower. More than six months since the onset of Vladimir Putin’s Ukraine invasion, it is now obvious that his army is in fact a deeply flawed institution that bears almost no resemblance to the immaculate fighting force of Red Square parades and Kremlin propaganda. Instead, the Russian military suffers from endemic corruption, low morale, and poor leadership, with individual initiative in short supply and commanders deeply reluctant to accept personal responsibility. Last week’s disastrous defeat in northeastern Ukraine will only worsen the situation, with officers gripped by fear as Moscow seeks scapegoats for what is shaping up to be one of the most shameful military defeats in Russian history.

    https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/ukrainealert/ukrainian-victory-shatters-russias-reputation-as-a-military-superpower/

I was thinking about that today. In the past the shadow of the “Spetnaz” loomed and was always referenced alongside SAS, Seals, Delta etc etc in guides to the world’s top special forces.

Yet up to now I’ve seen or heard nothing that suggests they even still exist.

Where are the Long Range Desert Group type operations carried out by these special forces attacking supply lines of western kit behind enemy lines, commando assaults in the dead of night in far flung Ukrainian air bases?

Maybe it’s a cunning plan and they are biding their time and (to paraphrase The Usual Suspects) “The greatest trick the Spetnaz ever pulled was convincing the world they didn't exist,"

It's a shame Tom Clancy is not around to rewrite Red Storm Rising.

It would be a short tome, maybe 30 or 40 pages.

  • Interesting that Republican (Putinist) election deniers ONLY deny outcomes of elections that they lose, but NEVER when they win.

Of course as matter of strategy they almost always claim in the leadup to Election Day, that the outcome is rigged in advance. However, they drop this line like a hot brick when it turns out they won.

Trump for POTUS 2016 is one example, and Bolduc for US Senate from NH 2022 is the latest.

Reminds me of a famous quote by Norman Thomas, the perennial unsuccessful nominee for President of the American Socialist Party in early 20th century, who was nevertheless well-respected by millions who never did vote for him.

On the eve of one of his many electoral defeats, Thomas was asked by a reporter, what his reaction would be IF it turned out he'd won the election and been elected President"

"Demand a recount!" was the reply.

BTW (also FYI) as a youth in Marion, Ohio, Thomas was a paperboy delivering the Marion Daily Star, published by . . . wait for it . . . Warren Harding.

I feel there has been insufficient interest in the news that the average Slovenian family will have a higher living standard than the average British one by 2024, and the average Polish family will surpass the British one by 2030, on current trajectories.

Measured how? I’m always a bit surprised at stories like this and often, like a government budget, they fall apart on scrutiny.

Right, this was the conclusion I came to -- you have to ration access on some basis, and the physical-queue method at least prioritises those who care deeply enough to give up a lot of their time to it; plus the basis for the rationing is clearly visible.
Yes, exactly. The most royalist - like @Casino_Royale and @HYUFD - who are prepared to queue for 9 hours, get to see the Queen

Not those who are just good at sitting at a laptop at midnight and pressing a button repeatedly for themselves and their mates. Or who are prepared to pay someone else to do it, more like. There are so many flaws with any other method, apart from the Queue. It is simple, democratic and fair

On topic... I saw that NH Senate candidate and far right psycho Don Bolduc had swiftly resiled from his election fraud position and acknowldged that Biden is POTUS. He was deep MAGAworld and if he's turned things must be desperate.

There's a lot of reverse ferreting going on on the American Right.

Bolduc has repudiated his electoral theft position. Something, weirdly, that he believed in just a few weeks ago in the Republican Senatorial debates.

Masters won the Republican Primary in Arizona on a "life begins at conception" platform. Indeed, he characterized his opponent (who had a rather nuanced position) as abortion rights advocate. Now he's the candidate, all traces of his previous views have been scrubbed from his website, and when asked about abortion, he said that he "like most Americans" was against "late term abortions".

It's hard to know exactly what impact these (violent) shifts in views will have.

But if I were the Democratic opponent of either of these candidates, I'd make it a "question of honesty".
Classic 'were you lying or an idiot?' Vibes.
Finally one I know the answer to. Both.
    Hmmm

But was he a lying idiot or an idiot lying?

    Details are important.

Fail on multiple fronts. Envy takes two objects: I envy him (object 1) his enormous penis (object 2). So, you sound as if you envy them (the queuers) those qualities (object 2). So English seems not to be your first language. Anyway, enough with queues.

11 out of 12 white, 91%. National total is 86% so not ridiculously out of line, if you'll forgive the pun. Especially considering that the queue almost certainly skews older than the population as a whole.
86% was at the 2011 census. Net migration has average around 300000 a year since. Thats about 3,300,000 extra ethnic minorities over 11 years. That accounts to an extra 5%. So now likely around 81% white british. And of course London much lower. So well out of line
Net migration is nowhere near 100% non-white.

In fact, I would be very surprised if it was more than 40% non-white.
Indeed. https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/populationandmigration/internationalmigration/datasets/populationoftheunitedkingdombycountryofbirthandnationalityunderlyingdatasheets has the details, but would require some processing to get useful numbers out of it!

It is younger and may well have a London bias, but Remainers are 60%

Interesting comment in the twitter thread that 56% would vote Conservative in an election, yet fewer than the national proportion support the death penalty. I wonder how many more were former Tory voters who have switched.

It seems that these are the younger, gentler Tory Remainers that are so poorly represented in the modern party. Though of course the typical demographic is therefore Liz Truss!

We had a good baseline from the Queen Mum, it was going to be more in demand than that. And limited by the logistics of how many people can pass through in x days and wanting the queue to be sub 12 hours (there are already people fainting etc en route). So in fact very predictable imo.

I don't think it was predictable.
I genuinely wouldn't have thought a week ago that over 1% of the population would be prepared to go to London and queue for an entire day for 5 seconds looking at a box.
And yet - and this is from someone of a republican bent who finds pageantry tedious and whose hackles are raised by phrases like "your highness" - were it not for parental duties, I'd go tomorrow.
The Queue is the best thing we've done in years.
Plus, I genuinely did like the Queen.
I'm genuinely sad that I won't get to go. I've been away all week with work and now the French air traffic controllers are delaying my return. This weekend is filled with a wedding reception and kids football and then the time will be gone. I'm sure I will regret not being able to make it.

    A guess.
But throughput must be about 1 per second, and I know a million seconds is about 11 days, and she will lie in state for just over half that time, which works out close to 600,000 people.

We had a good baseline from the Queen Mum, it was going to be more in demand than that. And limited by the logistics of how many people can pass through in x days and wanting the queue to be sub 12 hours (there are already people fainting etc en route). So in fact very predictable imo.

I think the death of her Maj is the first significant post-Brexit event in the UK

Everything else has been coloured by Brexit - even Covid and lockdowns - but this - a few nutters like James O Brien aside - is not tinged by Brexit, either way. It is something happening to post Brexit Britain

I still think it was a mistake not to have sent her down by train from Edinburgh, which would have achieved a similar purpose. I feel bad not to be doing the queue especially as it starts nit far from us in SE London, but I don't think I have 8 hours spare this weekend unfortunately.

Fail on multiple fronts. Envy takes two objects: I envy him (object 1) his enormous penis (object 2). So, you sound as if you envy them (the queuers) those qualities (object 2). So English seems not to be your first language. Second fail I don't recall the issue of my alleged Oxonianism arising in recent months, so you seem to be a retread, since this persona signed up to the site 2 days ago.
I noticed the last part too. I’m thinking someone somewhere is sitting with a spreadsheet listing identifiers to build up profiles - was asked about my username the other day too so wouldn’t be surprised if Pravda suddenly has a story about a British politician named after his idol Patti Boulay posting anti-Liz Truss things comes along.

If we replaced "The Queue" with an airport travelator style conveyor belt THINK OF THE THROUGHPUT WE COULD ACHIEVE.

Efficiency in doing something rather pointless isn't a great gain.

    Who is in the queue?

    Thread:

Much speculation about who’s in #TheQueue and why, but little evidence. That is, until a doughty band of @uniessexgovt researchers began a survey (using the kinds of methods developed for studying protests). Survey ongoing but here are snippets based on the first 300 responses.

    Good work.

    60% Remain!
It's perhaps the first cultural event that has significantly divided the Remainer faction.
I think the death of her Maj is the first significant post-Brexit event in the UK

Everything else has been coloured by Brexit - even Covid and lockdowns - but this - a few nutters like James O Brien aside - is not tinged by Brexit, either way. It is something happening to post Brexit Britain
You may be onto something there.

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/2022/09/16/queen-elizabeth-ii-state-funeral-monday-minute-by-minute-guide/

it will all be chocka but I reckon Constitution Hill or the Wellington Arch might be do-able if you get there early

yes and i havent even mentioned Putin once if you look at my posts.....

Can I put in a shout for fried Christmas Pudding and fried potatoes for post-Christmas breakfast? As much part of the end of December as World's Strongest Man.
Fried in what rendering ? Butter ? Olive Oil.

Will deffo give it a bash this Xmas. 👍
    Lard or butter
I tend to use olive oil because I'm an effete metropolitan. Also, it's next to the cooker. I expect butter is better.

Scots like fried sliced clootie dumpling with bacon, egg, mushrooms, sausage, etc. on Boxing Day, and any other Day. But not too often ...
A fascinating and superior civilization you have there on the basis of that.
As Burns, Hume, Scott, Telford, Stevenson, Banks, etc. etc. would all say.

There isn't going to be enough time for everyone to view the coffin who wants to do so. Regrettable.

    Predictable.

This is no joke, I’m actually looking forward to seeing The Queue

I can’t believe I typed that sincerely, but I did. I’m going to walk the whole length of the queue on Sunday. Ooh!

I reckon the Queue should be permanent. The same way we kept the London Eye even tho it was meant to be temporary
A friend pointed out that it would be much quicker for everyone who wants to see the Queen to form a line and then for the Queen's coffin to be driven slowly past the queue. I still think it was a mistake not to have sent her down by train from Edinburgh, which would have achieved a similar purpose. I feel bad not to be doing the queue especially as it starts nit far from us in SE London, but I don't think I have 8 hours spare this weekend unfortunately.

It’s very close to being too late anyway. The wait is now 24 hours and rising. I’m guessing they will close the queue some time tomorrow

    The Queue is Dying

    *sob*

Do not worry. There will soon be a meta-queue to honour the memory of the queue, so you can queue to remember the queue to remember the Queen.

It would be very appropriate in this digital age.

I reckon we combine it with something from Randall Munroe's (XKCD guy) book "What If", which was basically how long does it take for everyone to meet their soulmate if you put two lines of people together so that everyone in the world looks at everyone else (or such-like)

We had a good baseline from the Queen Mum, it was going to be more in demand than that. And limited by the logistics of how many people can pass through in x days and wanting the queue to be sub 12 hours (there are already people fainting etc en route). So in fact very predictable imo.
We did - but I don't remember anything on this scale for the QM.
The number of keen royalists I know in real life is zero. All the monarchists I know are monarchists in the "don't see a republic would be any better" mould. And yet, here they all are, and I wish I could join them.
    200,000 queued for the QM

    The maths is not hard
