    Mordaunt over sold.

Truss over-hyped as a final two candidate. Enough MPs have seen the shit show of her debate and now running away from another. "Naaaah......."

And Sunak might lend enough votes to Penny as he thinks he can beat her, but it is not the disaster of PM Truss if he is proved wrong.

Not sure Sunak has the luxury of being able to lend votes - could end up with Truss vs Mordaunt.
Yes, too risky surely unless you have a bigger lead than he has.

    I'm going to be controversial.

First, I've invented a new word "heatbernate" - meaning to seek rest and shelter from periods of extreme hear.

Second, my prediction for tonight is Sunak first, Badenoch second, Mordaunt third and Truss fourth.

Already done. To aestivate/aestivation is a thing in zoology. Though that is perhaps for longer periods than one middle of the day, for which as suggested siesta works better.

Am I the only person on this site who, book-value aside, thinks that Truss is the best candidate?

Almost everyone else on this site seems to be anti-Truss for one reason or another it seems.

I do. She's audacious and politically astute. Not long ago was supposed to be the liberal one, now she's somehow the candidate of the ERG. She'll reinvent herself again once she gets into Number 10.

NigelB - FWIW, a local supermarket here in the Seattle area (QFC) has been raising leafy plants inside a nearby store under artificial lights for months now. As I recall from the last time I looked, basil is the most popular. (Electricity is cheaper in this area than most places.)

Here on the Bucks/Oxon borders I think it must be around 36c but there is a bit of a breeze. I have certainly been in hotter places before but it is certainly very toasty for this country.

I am remarkably impressed by how well our new build (4 years old) house has coped. I closed everything at just after 9am today. Downstairs is about 23c and upstairs about 25c. When you step in from outside it feels air conditioned. All that insulation designed to keep the house warm is paying off now too. Our house is rendered white which I think must help too.

To be honest, the insulation quality of your 4 year old house doesn't sound that different from our 350-year old in much the same part of the Thames Valley. The only relevant changes a few dozen occupants have made over the centuries to the feet-thick limestone have been a lot more opportunities for air to blow through and lots of double-glazing.

As for fertiliser and CO2, can Robert enlighten us on what Californian startup is going to become the Apple/Tesla/Google of food? Surely there’s mahoosive scope for highly energy and resource efficient vertical farming, closed loop even. Plenty experimenting with it, who’s going to be the trillion dollar company because of it? Because someone will.

    It's an excellent question.

I've seen some very interesting companies in the sector - one of which produces LEDs tuned to photosynthesis. That is, they only output light in the wavelengths that plants can use for growing.

Incidentally, it seems to me that when the next round of results are announced, the odds might shift against Sunak because he's going to look as though he's lost momentum. In fact, of course, it will simply be the fact that it is Braverman votes being redistributed. His turn for a boost will be when the Tugendhat votes get redistributed, and probably again when Badenoch drops out.

I think the SNP would have big problems if they joined with the Conservatives under Truss to undermine the operation of a Lab/LD coalition or Lab minority government with C&S and perhaps even bring it down. PM Truss would make that outcome more likely I think. So be careful what you wish for.

Got my ballot for WA State August 2, 2022 primary in the mail late last week.

Note that under our Top Two system, the two top vote getters in the primary, regardless of party preference (or lack thereof) advance to the general election.

Not much to vote on this summer, but some significant contested federal and state races:

    > US Senator - 18 candidates filed, took me a while to hunt for and find MY choice, incumbent Democratic Sen. Patty Murray, who I first voted for in the 1992 primary. The other 17 this year are mostly no-hope ballot-fillers (or -stuffers) including 5 others running under Democratic Party label, 4 "Independent Party", 3 Republican Party, 2 "No Party Preference", 1 Socialist Worker Party, 1 "Trump Republican" and . . . wait for it . . . 1 "JFK Republican". Pick of this litter are Patty and her real rival, Republican (without modification) Tiffany Smiley who is being backed by (what's left of) state GOP establishment.

    > US House 7th Congressional District - just 4 hopefuls, including incumbent Pramila Jayapal, leader of House progressives and shoo-in to make the general AND win re-election. Others are 2 declared Democrats and one Independent by name of Jesse James whose key campaign plank is liberating Julian Assange.

    > WA Secretary of State - very interesting & unusual open-seat race, resulting from mid-term resignation of former Republican SOS Kim Wyman, who left to take an election security job with Biden Administration; there are 8 candidates on the primary ballot (for remaining two years of Wyman's term) including 3 Republicans, 2 Democrats, 1 "Union Party", 1 "America First (R) Party" and 1 declared "Nonpartisan". The leading candidates are incumbent (appointed) Democrat SOS Steve Hobbs a former state senator, and Nonpartisan Julie Anderson, who is Pierce County (Tacoma) Auditor (county elections officer). General election race between Hobbs and Anderson should be a humdinger, with Republican voters gravitating to her, along with some Dems and many independents who have become used to voting for a Republican for this office, in large measure so they do NOT cast a party-line vote their entire ballot.

    > WA State Senator 36th Leg District - another open seat race, caused by retirement of sitting senator, 2 candidates on ballot, both Democrats; both will automatically advance to the general, but #1 vote getter will be incumbent State Representative, the other is a perennial candidate who is 99.46% sure get crushed in the Fall.

    > WA State Representative - two separate positions on ballot, in one the incumbent Dem is running unopposed, in the other, open-seat race there are 5 hopefuls, all Democrats, of whom two will advance to general, probably the lone moderate and one progressive, with Republican voters (about 10% max in this district) mostly going for the mod, and Democrats splitting, with precise balance deciding the outcome.

I think the SNP would have big problems if they joined with the Conservatives under Truss to undermine the operation of a Lab/LD coalition or Lab minority government with C&S and perhaps even bring it down. PM Truss would make that outcome more likely I think. So be careful what you wish for.

Fucking woke governments! How dare they assist deviant, foreign rodents display their trans(national) genitals in pure English habitats?

Beavers to be legally protected from harm in England from October

Under new legislation, it will be an offence to deliberately capture, kill, disturb or injure beavers in England or damage where the animals breed and rest

A five-year government trial on the river Otter in south-west England concluded that beavers had brought “a wealth of benefits to the local area and ecology”.

On a list of "worst MPs" from a party you've voted for, I'd have to put Michael Fabricant consistently at or near the top of the list.

Its still hard to believe he's actually genuine and not a Harry Enfield character.

Michael Fabricant is the Thinking Person's Boris Johnson

Did we ever find out what @Cicero was referring to with the big Finnish story about to destroy the Conservative Party? I’m lazy and would rather not trawl the depths of the Finnish blogosphere.

I would have thought there would be Swedish-language Finnish stuff and you could find it quite easily.
    Absolutely! In theory 😉

Only about 5% of Finnish media - much less of social media - is in Swedish, so it’s not a great help.

NigelB - FWIW, a local supermarket here in the Seattle area (QFC) has been raising leafy plants inside a nearby store under artificial lights for months now. As I recall from the last time I looked, basil is the most popular. (Electricity is cheaper in this area than most places.)

Because Seattle has socialized electricity, and has had for over a century, via Seattle City Light, municipal utility that owns and operates 3 dams for hydro power. Resulting in some of the lowest electricity costs for businesses & residences in the USA.

She's my second best betting result, though. Only because I saw value when she drifted out. Badenoch is still my best, even though I sold most of my stake early on.

I don't think she's particularly competent, doesn't have any vision (neither does Sunak, to be fair, not sure about Mordaunt) and (unfairly) I find her quite annoying.

Also, she's a double traitor - LD leaver and repentent remoaner

From a Labour perspective she looks suitable. The public persona and charisma of T May + a harsh set of principles and without the solidity and correctness. I think Labourites are looking at a further period in opposition if Kemi gets it, otherwise they should be reasonably confident. Truss would be the Labour favourite though, as there is something to be said for all then others.

In GREAT news for the Conservative Party and the UK, all five candidates firmly on record now support the Net Zero 50 target and will do what they can to deliver it. 😎

For Kemi promising “not row back on net zero” being described as a big u turn, whilst peat restoration is Sunak’s “pet project” Truss is leading a delegation to Canada in December as our PM, Tom was once on the side of more sewage pollution, but now thinks his voting on that stinks

It’s not happening Andy. As Badenoch has had a difficult time under scrutiny since the last vote, and Truss has improved (whatever that means) the Braverman votes increase Truss lead over Kemi and perhaps to about 10 on Penny.

With her immature teen-like ideas and approach to politics (Kemi is certainly the heir to Gove) its hard to know what Sunak will do with her when PM, Education probably, unless he has disguised how much he dislikes her and her politics in which case Health.

I do. She's audacious and politically astute. Not long ago was supposed to be the liberal one, now she's somehow the candidate of the ERG. She'll reinvent herself again once she gets into Number 10.
They said that about Boris. Things soon fell apart when he was forced to botch everything in a desperate attempt to keep all his disparate backers on board. Part of the Boris tragedy really.
I mean, he won the election? And I don't think he was undone by the botching unraveling, it was more that he was constantly creating scandals. He got away with it early on because Brexit, but once that got done and he got into a grumpy midterm period people started applying the usual standards.

I always thought it was the voters who put Thatcher in power, but I'm happy to be corrected if wrong.
It was the SNP that forced the General Election that gave the voters that opportunity. Thatcher may never have been PM if it wasn't for the SNP voting with the Conservatives to bring down the Labour government when they did.

They’re called ‘erratics’ aren’t they? Been many moons since I studied geology. Very common throughout the former glaciated areas, eg Scotland and Scandinavia.
    Yep!
Seattle's most famous erratic rock (next to Kurt Cobain):

Ooh, that's quite something. Especially in Seattleite burb scenery.

Though there are bigger ones - appreciable fractions of square kms in size - big enough to quarry, known in Scotland, and I'm sure still bigger ones elsewhere.

Unravelled quickly too. Hartlepool and that big inflatable gimp of him floating triumphantly in the air was only a year ago.

Nope, neither of you support Truss for PM, I’m not falling for that, you are only saying this for a bet or some clever punchline.

She is absolute rubbish. She can’t speak. Has no presentational style, charisma or substance. She can’t think on her feet. She turns voters off. There is absolutely nothing there you can say is a good facet or characteristic, let alone makes her better than the other four candidates.

I’m trying to work out how intelligent person with an interest in politics can publicly post what you have just. What is the punchline?

SeaShantyIrish2 - The QFC I mentioned is, like me, in Kirkland, and so gets its electricity from a private company, PSE. (PSE still gets a large portion of its electricity from burning coal in Montana. source: https://www.pse.com/en/pages/energy-supply/electric-supply )

It wouldn't shock me if Penny Mordaunt collapses like a flan tonight.

She's been exposed as being an empty vessel over the last few days and I think a fair few of her votes will move to Rishi.

    Agreed.

Rishi v Truss final two looking increasingly nailed on, which is the perfect outcome.
    Perfect in what sense?

Alternatively, the "Anyone But Truss" voters might get behind Mordaunt to keep Truss off the balllot.
Who are these legions of "Anyone but Truss" voters?

And the problem is that the party is quite close to a three way split right now, so no faction can afford to lend tactical votes to another without seeing themselves eliminated.
MPs who have seen her up close, seen how useless she is, and fear for their seats. Not a prediction, but a possibility.

I am quite green on Truss and a doubly good outcome for me as I think she will be an electoral liability very quickly.

Barty has been a fan for a long time. Personally, I think she is possible a tad harshy spoken of, but I may be wrong.

Did Penny's 'Global Phenomenon' good looks just pass the Tories by?

Ah, yes, PSE. What a bunch of land pirates! They did a great job via their incompetence in trying to blow up my neighborhood a few years back.
