The 2015 version of Far from the Madding Crowd demonstrated on BBC2 how much better film making was in 1967 with Julie Christe, Terence Stamp and Alan Bates.

Apart from the title which is Maddening of course.
For people with radios. Fascinating documentary on the "repetitive beats" legislation on R4 tonight. Including a very young Blair. And a not so young Corbyn. A salutary lesson on a Culture War. It isn't new.

Gorgeous day here today - as you can see below. I have been sitting in the sunshine designing my vegetable potager and other lovely garden matters.
Daughter is in Greece having gone to Croatia first. Youngest son is joining her tomorrow. It is a long and well deserved holiday for them both. He was her front of house manager for the last year of her lease and bloody good at it. The last 3 years have been tough but she has made a profit, has learnt a huge amount and proved herself to be quite the tough entrepreneur. I look forward to seeing what she does next.
I know all the criticisms made of jobs in hospitality but, at its best, it can teach those working in it so much. And it is so much harder than it looks to get it right. Snobbery about what is involved in doing so and doing it profitably is unnecessary.
At the moment Daughter is sending me pictures of all the beautiful places she's visiting in Greece, which is making me quite envious.
That is a field. We have fields in this country.
It IS this country. @Cyclefree has unintentionally misled you. She is not posting her daughters pictures here.
No misleading - unintentional or otherwise. That's what the phrase "Gorgeous day today - as you can see below" means.
I have seen references to Eurovision in both US and NZ media.
Bizarre; it seems to be growing in global reach.
I’ve never seen it.
The UK has got huge social media reach into the English speaking world, it's not a huge surprise that a social media friendly event has become more popular in the last 10 years.
Well we watched bits of Eurovision during the ad breaks for the quiz show on ITV. Dreary ballad after dreary ballad after dreary ballad, just like I remember from the 80s. But then flicked over again at the end and they were on to the mid session filler, which allowed my daughter to marvel at how unlike us the Europeans are in their idea of what telly should be like. And then the quick recaps of the songs - and the Moldovan entry looked fun. I've since looked it up on YouTube and it was genuinely enjoyable. Well done Moldova. Granted I didn't see all of it and no doubt there were some other fun bits among the identiballads, but I'm rooting for Moldova. And Ukraine, and the UK, obviously.
So has anyone had a big bet on Ukraine? They were 1.65 about 2 days or so ago. Now 1.35
I am not convinced. Are Eurovision voters really following current affairs? I have no idea, so wouldnt back or lay Ukraine.
In 2014 the Eurovision crowd booed the Russian entry (which I thought was quite good), so even back then people interested in Eurovision followed things somewhat.
Enough now to win? I haven't a clue, but it'd be hard to miss.

Why is Australia in Eurovision? My geography is not great, but I am pretty sure it's not in Europe.
Most Australians' families are of European origin however
Or African, if you go back far enough.
That was before the first settlements in Europe.
Since the populated European continent emerged then if you added those nations whose populations are mainly of European ancestry to the European nations who compere in Eurovision, then Canada, New Zealand, the USA, Chile and Argentina as well as Australia would be the maximum number of competitors in Eurovision

I had a small bet on them at about 4s, I think. I think even the demographics with less interest than us in current affairs probably have an idea what's going on there. I think the chances of a 'show whose side we are on' vote are high. But I didn't see the song, and the song needs to be at least ok-ish for the sympathy vote to be enough.

Azerbaijan today:
Azerbaijan seems to have suffered quite the calamity, such that the very ground has been shifted 90 degrees. Presumably some sort of powerful earthquake, I hope you are there on relief efforts.

Australia was abysmal!
Now for the voting...
Nerd Alert
A light year is a measure of distance not time
And the banana wolves
Which seems to just invite sardonic comment...
Gun to head trifecta - Ukraine Spain Norway

Australia and Serbia share the wooden spoon.
Bottom 5 - Australia, Switzerland, Serbia, Estonia, Finland
The first half was largely forgettable. Finland, Ukraine, Greece, UK and Estonia were decent. Moldova and Serbia were certainly interesting....
Spain, Lithuania, Moldova, Norway and Estonia
Lithuania
Ukraine
Estonia
Bottom 3
Australia
Moldova
Belgium

And bring back the turkey twizzlers, Smash, and beans followed by banana and custard with a nice thick skin.

Next time I'll put "IN THE PHOTO BELOW".
Honestly ....
Vicky Leandros "Apres Toi".
I do believe you can still listen in to the results on the wireless.
But I resisted.
