It’s one of the toughest gigs in politics – going on after TV after a defeat to explain that, really, your party had done quite well in the circumstances.

"One attacker had been killed by police and a search operation was ongoing, with reports that another attacker was involved.
Ongoing exchanges of gunfire had earlier been reported between the attackers and security forces, sources told Al Jazeera.
The attack was on the Imperial Marhaba hotel, local radio said, according to the Reuters news agency. Other reports indicated that two hotels may have been attacked."
These things won't stop until the vast majority of moderate Muslims and imams do something about it within their own communities. Hopefully the fact that it's the middle of Ramadan might help, but I'm not holding anything crossed.
Best advice yet, for now. - Not much more you can do Big John other than to stay put. – stay safe & hope you have bottled water to hand.

"First time a person has been decapitated in France" sky report. Really Sky? Really??
Still no updates since last time.
‘Lazy to claim French terror attacks nothing to do with Islam’
A week really is a long time in politics.
Obviously it's a very stressful situation but you are absolutely doing the right thing in sitting tight.
No updates on news channels in last 5 mins, last report was of 2 gunmen, 1 dead and 1 fled, possibly dressed as tourist or policeman.
There's no other way this will work. We need to burn this cancer away.
Mr. Eagles, that's geography, not history. My knowledge of France is very good [albeit two thousand years out of date].
Mr. Slackbladder, that won't happen. A few weeks ago we had a potential PM shrieking about making Islamophobia a criminal offence.
Mr. Owls, as Mr. Price said, it must be extremely frightening but staying put with your family is the right option. PB can provide you and them with a trustworthy link to the outside world, which (when the time comes) will also be very useful.

3rd floor looks well protected from anything going on outside.
'I think most people give him a pass on that as something that regrettably has to be said in order to cool potential reprisals in this country. I am sure that he is not as naive as that in practice, but there aren't any easy solutions here.'
Agree,he's trying to keep the lid on it knowing that most people's patience is now exhausted with this $hite.
Yes. It has all gone quiet and repetitive on the news channels which might suggest that there is a major security operation ongoing to ensure that any potential gunman is accounted for but very little new is happening. This is obviously good news.
Stay safe and still John. It is the only sensible thing to do at the moment.
Please be aware that depending on levels of coordination social media will be being monitored. Please do not give information on your own situation.
Ideally function on receive only, from PB for example.

Says on website it's closed Friday afternoons but possibly worth a try if you have a phone to hand.

Interior Ministry spokesman Mohammed Ali Aroui says the police operation to catch a second gunman behind the attack on the beach resort is ongoing and the exchange of fire is continuing, reports AP. He says one gunman behind "the terrorist attack was killed during an exchange of fire with security forces".
Having to school the interviewer on why Ramadan isn't just about fasting.
Selon les médias tunisiens, un deuxième assaillant aurait été arrêté. #Sousse #attentat http://www.lematin.ch/21716500
bigjohnowls - don't keep us informed unless you're 100% sure that it's safe to do so. You can tell us the story of your escape later; don't take any chances if you might be heard typing or texting.
Fingers crossed that it's all over before much longer - like others, have TV and Twitter on for any news for you and yours.
Sounds like you've had some good advice. Head down and think you deserve a crateful of Keep Calm mugs when you get back to Blighty. This will be a cracking anecdote one day...
@Slackbladder - there's three attacks today, some media heads are saying this is a lone wolf attack, that seems odd given the Kuwait, French and Tunisian actions.
it is true of course that Kendall is the 'uber Blairite' candidate in the race but Burnham too was first promoted to be a Minister by Blair and in 2010 was considered a Blairite candidate. He was loyal to Blair when the Brownites moved against him but also loyal to Brown when the Blairites tried, in turn, to undermine him so he may be better placed than Kendall to unite all wings of the party. Cooper is clearly the Brownite candidate in the race and Corbyn the candidate of the Old Left.
As for election 2020, it is early days, but if Osborne cuts the top tax rate in July while slashing welfare and public spending that could boost Labour, even if economically there may be arguments in favour and who knows how EU ref will impact on Tory unity. The fact that Cameron will not be leading the Tories in 2020 also removes their best asset
Also worth noting Tunisia and France have both been hit twice this year.
@BJO can you email the embassy?
"According to Tunisian media, a second assailant was arrested."

FWIW, check if the bath is metal. If so, first sound of gunfire, get your faamily to lie down inside it.
Key bit
"15:30 According to Tunisian media, a second assailant was arrested. "
No UK media reporting the same yet.
Not to put the mockers on things, but I’ve seen no secondary confirmation from major news orgs. - Will do so immediately if that changes.

I have no idea of the veracity of that statement, unfortunately.
No sense in risking it until the all clear is announced. There's no news pic coming out here in the UK apart from old ones of hotel frontage and a helicopter. Looks like the whole area is on lock down for a while yet.
How's the rest of the family?
Don't. Other international media are not as self-censorious as they are in the UK.
