The were saying on commentary early in the game that French media say Real Madrid were going to bid £200m for Olise...this game might have knocked a few quid off that.
No idea if that's geo-locked - but if it isn't then it's 100% passed Google's extensive copyright filters so must be 100% fine. A 1981 docu-drama about what would happen if London was flooded (with some timely 'do we really need a Thames Barrier?' dialogue). Takes a good while to get going - as did most drama of the era.

The same government keeps on adding new things for which we need to prove our identity or age. So scrapping a system that might actually be half-decent for the smorgasbord of PII exposing alternatives that funnel all sorts of important data off-shore isn't necessarily good news.
Indeed. The current situation is mandatory ID without a standardised way of demonstrating it. This is just delaying the inevitable (again)
Well if he scraps all the intended online uses, that would make sense at least, but I doubt he'll do that, in fact I expect he'll likely do even more of them. This is a problem that is going to bite some future government on the arse. If you want people to keep proving their identity and age — even such mundane things as iOS on your phone insists on knowing your age now — then you ought to have a system in place that is as secure and private as possible, not scan you face or documents and send it to a server in Timbuktu. This kind of knee jerk decision without thinking through the consequences does not bode well.
Implementation is all important. I have no idea about the specific scheme and whether it's a good one. But if you require ID to vote, access healthcare, deal with your tax, have a job etc, there needs to be a universal form of it that everyone has.
No, there does not. There needs to be options people can choose from and everyone ought to be able to get one of those options, but the more fragmented it is, the better.
A single unified system is a dystopian nightmare.
Not as dystopian as the current situation where you have to prove ID and not everyone has the means to do so reliably and easily.
The key choice is whether you need demonstrate ID for government stuff.
There are many options to prove ID, everyone can choose any of those.
All in favour of making it easier to get any of them if needed, but absolutely no need to have another one everyone has to have.
Not to get at you, but this clearly doesn't solve the problem of easily and reliably demonstrating ID in the multiple ways you need to do so. And shows why you need a single comprehensive means of ID.
Not remotely.
There are a plethora of ways of easily and reliably demonstrating ID. There is absolutely no need whatsoever for any comprehensive means of ID, there is a menu of options and pick one that suits you.
Pick which one? Passport doesn't have address and NI number. Driving licence is only for people who drive and doesn't include NI number or residency status. No other ID is accepted for photo. Neither of these will get you online...
In every case at least one ID will be compulsory anyway
Why do you need a form of ID with address and NI number and online? You claimed for voting before, but there's already 26 acceptable forms of ID for that - and an option for ID available free of charge for anyone who lacks any of those.
There does not need to be a one-stop-shop for everything, in fact its generally a very bad idea to put all eggs in same basket.

Well there y'go PB. WC26. 32 teams entered. England came third. England beat 29 other teams, or beat the team that beat them. It's an exceptional outcome, the best since 1966.

IIRC France started the tournament as the number one ranked team.

The President stated that tomorrow he will be communicating with the commanders of the combat brigades. Therefore, today I want to address the personnel of these brigades.
Tomorrow, your commanders will have the opportunity to tell the truth about what is happening in the army, or to remain silent. You know far better than I do the cost of such silence and understand the consequences it may lead to.
I realize that not every officer is ready to take on such responsibility. Some are concerned for themselves and their positions. Others fear for their units, understanding that after an honest assessment of the Supreme Commander's actions, their people may be sent to a doomed direction or left without proper support.
At the same time, in informal conversations, the majority of commanders express their true attitude toward the situation. They talk about it among themselves, write about it in private messages, including those who have publicly posted complimentary entries.
Therefore, I am addressing the servicemen of the combat brigades: help your commanders find the courage. Talk to them. Ask them to say tomorrow exactly what they truly think. What they say to you, their brothers-in-arms, and write in private messages.
The existence of Ukraine is at stake. The army remains the main guarantee of our state's existence. Keeping silent about the real state of affairs today poses a threat to the entire country.
You took an oath to the Ukrainian people. Your commanders bear responsibility for you, for your lives, and for the combat readiness of their units. That is why their honesty before the Supreme Commander-in-Chief is part of that responsibility.

Some years ago, I got the impression that losing the US Super Bowl had a worse effect on a team than being eliminated in an earlier round. Never tried to check that out -- and there may not be enough data to test the idea, but it does seem plausible.
So, if there is something similar in soccer, it may be better for England -- long term -- to have won 3rd than to have lost the championship,

Yes, parking the bus without going deep was an odd game plan after the first goal, but FIFA engineered Argentina into the final by selecting a wholly unsuitable referee for the semi.
FIFA have been as dodgy as f*** off the field, but this was wholly different. You might be able to pick holes in my argument re; the England game, but Egypt was an absolute travesty.

Morning. So populism is about finding the losers, getting them to vote for you and then exploiting them because they are losers. Sums up MAGA and Reform
Well very typical that the meaningless match I couldn’t be arsed to stay up and watch, turns out to be a 10-goal thriller that should have been the final!

Jim, I haven't checked the data but I believe it's true that sides losing the football league play-off finals do badly the following season. My own team, Leyton Orient, finished 6th in 2024/25, lost the playoff final and then narrowly avoided relegation this last season. I think that is not untypical.

Robbed of the England manager's job because Tony Blair did not like Hoddle's admittedly eccentric spiritualist beliefs.
Am in Riga for a family event with my Russian family. The Baltics are in a difficult position in that quite a bit of their economy has always depended on Russia and Russian influence. We spent a day at the beach where the beachside properties were new, well appointed and empty. The Russian owners are no longer there but the properties have not been sold as there is an expectation that the Baltics will turn east again once the EU money dries up.
There is an outlet village on the outskirts that is almost deserted due to the lack of cross border shopping. You can still cross the border as a relation will do in a few months where they will taxi to the border, cross after extended checks (no Euros etc) and then get picked up on the other side. All organised by specialist travel consultants.
In a few years this time will be forgotten and the beachfront owners will return and the Baltics will walk their fine line between East and West
1,520 Russian troops, 96 artillery/MLRS and 3 more anti-aircraft systems not reporting for duty in Ukraine today.
Given Russian recruitment is only running at an average of 800 a day, there are 720 less troops to fight the SMO today than yesterday. Over 4,000 less troops than this time last week. There will be some holes appearing on the front lines. But has Ukraine got the means to exploit them?

The Death of Putin will greatly aid that process.

Taking a more relaxed approach to betting now, but gone for Russell each way at 11. Pays out top 2. he's been top 2 at the last three races. Antonelli does look much quicker, but bad luck has undone him repeatedly. Verstappen tends to start badly and is slow in the first sector.
Edited: added a hedge at evens on Betfair just in case Russell gets close then his car conks out.
Well very typical that the meaningless match I couldn’t be arsed to stay up and watch, turns out to be a 10-goal thriller that should have been the final!
Yep. Although it was only a ten goal thriller because it wasn't the final.

There have been rumours of the imminent introduction of exit visas for Russians, ahead of possible mobilisation after the September local elections.
Officials are now openly talking about being at war, rather than a special military operation which was the approved form of words for four years.
Ukraine introduced exit visas for men on Day 1 of the war.
At his valedictory PMQs, [Starmer] claimed that “every prime minister knows when they take up the torch that the day will come when they have to pass it on”. That’s an elegant gloss on the brutal truth: the torch has been wrenched from his grasp after a mere two years at Number 10 by the Labour MPs who hypocritically applauded him out of the chamber. He will depart tomorrow making the case that he is leaving Britain in better shape than he found it. He’s the first UK prime minister to receive France’s Legion d’honneur, a more prestigious leaving gift than the carriage clock presented by his tactless cabinet.
Ask around Labour people and there’s a common explanation for his fall. “At a time when politics is more difficult than ever, Keir is someone who is fundamentally no good at politics,” says someone who was one of his senior aides. “He doesn’t excel at communication or policy development or strategy.” . There was an assumption, both naive and conceited, that simply not being the Tories would be enough in itself. One senior Labour figure who talked quite often to Sir Keir once told me: “I can never really work out why he wants to be prime minister other than for the Wikipedia entry.”
The absence of political craft bears responsibility for his government’s most egregious blunders. He was also poor at nurturing relationships with colleagues to the point where Ed Miliband, who he thought to be his best friend in cabinet, became the first minister to tell him he had to quit. All this led to what one Labour committee chair calls a “double power failure” as he lost the respect of both voters and colleagues.
Andy Burnham is a much more political animal. As recent weeks have demonstrated, he has the audacity to seize an opportunity and he can tell a story. “I know what to do,” he declared in his speech accepting the leadership on Friday. “I have a plan.” That had better be true because a story is ultimately meaningless tosh unless it is accompanied by a plan. The sorry tale of Sir Keir’s foreshortened premiership is a cautionary one for the man who succeeds him. Promising popular change is much easier than delivering it. Fail and Mr Burnham will also find himself “passing on the torch” more quickly than he can imagine today.

48 teams entered, England beat 45.
That's a lot of matches I must have missed, there.
Skipped the footy for an early night. I'm up early at least.
I thought i was going to watch to half time but it was quite impossible to leave. Like a basketball game, especially in the second half when for a short time it actually looked like France would win. A quite bizarre game of free flowing football and some exceptional finishing. The midfield seemed almost non existent. Quite incredible to watch but it was hard not to think that one out player such as Rashford or Gordon or Saka and the Argentina game could have been very, very different.
I dipped into X this morning. (Why do I continue to do that?). It’s still wall to wall Falklands. Lots of “Argentinian” posters all of a sudden. Who also, oddly, seem to be repeating tropes about Britain being flooded with Muslims between their Malvinas mumblings.
Doesn’t look remotely organic to me. New angle for the troll farms, I think. Russian ones, or MAGA?
