Why dive when you know dozens of cameras are filming you and millions of people watching? Mindboggling.

I half expected the Argentinians to take a dive, I didn’t expect the Swiss to do it!
    It was a Swiss roll.
Well they’re rolling into extra time.

    Good morning, everyone.

Hoping this is a day when the upstairs can actually cool down. Tired of this prolonged heatwave with interludes of bearable temperatures.

In hindsight it seemed very likely that the semi-finalists would probably be France, Spain, Argentina, England, but I wonder what the odds on that combination was before the tournament started. (Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way to find out what they were at that time).

I cannot see any odds against naming the semi-finalists but here are the pre-tournament outright prices:-

ETA: look how far down you have to go to find Switzerland.

ETA: evidence against England being under-priced for patriotic mugs! The perennially under-priced and overrated team is Brazil. Does anyone know if Nate Silver tipped them yet again?

Quite funny that England benefitted from an "anti-Arsenal" corner rule with the Argies benefitting from a rule punishing diving lol

We desperately need rain as well. I have 300 gallon capacity for rainwater in water butts, all of which will be empty by the end of this week.

Pre-DnD discussion yesterday turned to how many Prime Ministers we've had since the campaign started mid-2023. Apparently the answer's just three, Sunak, Starmer and, (imminently) Burnham. If it had started a year earlier the answer would be five.

Senator Graham's office called it a "brief and sudden illness."

Now we have NBC News adding EMTs responded to "cardiac arrest."

NBC: Emergency personnel responded to a call for “cardiac arrest” at Graham’s Capitol Hill home on Saturday night, according to police scanner audio obtained by NBC News.

Great, now we're going to have a week of people asking if Russia assassinated Lindsey Graham, and I wouldn't be shocked if one of the people wondering about it was Putin.

Bortnikov: "Honestly? No clue. It sounds like something we'd do."

    Senate vacancy primer, South Carolina:
    - McMaster can appoint an interim senator
    - There will be a special election in Nov (only covers lame duck few weeks)
    - Graham's seat was already up for a regular 2026 election
    - State GOP will also pick a new nominee to replace Graham for the regular election

AIUI that bit may not be correct. The interim Senator serves until January 3rd following the next set of elections, unless it is less than one hundred days before them (which this isn't).

    https://law.justia.com/codes/south-carolina/title-7/chapter-19/section-7-19-20/?__cf_chl_tk=zVzhAWxwoJvr2NT7VGmyokZgKFmhKvjfi9Gv8MVNzec-1783838521-1.0.1.1-gDWGuuRmRpdlFe8Yj6NfXMTkFA.z9Uf1oypYHOWw9Pc

The only question might be, will he pick the person chosen to be the new candidate for the seat? It would be logical to.

A Trump-endorsed replacement might help them to November. But not beyond. Likely means another seat the Republicans have to spend a shed load of cash they ween't expecting.

It wouldn't surprise me at all, on reflection, if McMaster was himself the nominee. Whether he goes to the Senate in advance might be a different question given the complications around Evette losing the gubernatorial primary.

I kind of fuck with this idea. The new MGs are cheap shit but the old MGs were cheap shit, so it's on brand.

It needs careful positioning in the market because the hot hatch market is sadly almost dead. The Civic Type-R is gone from the UK market so it's basically multiple Golf GTI derivatives vs GR Yaris.

Turned on the telly and realised we're on ITV.

Well, it was a good run I suppose.

The curse of ITV is a myth.
    Told you.

    Thank goodness.

I will not have to listen to Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon commentate on another England match for the rest of the tournament.
I'd be interested in the views of our resident statistician - but for about 25 years (roughly 1995-2020) the performances on ITV seemed to be consistently awful. It wasn't just win/lose, it was that the wins in ITV were unconvincing 2-0s against tiny Carribbean nations; the losses on BBC were creditable performances against Brazil and the losses on ITV were abject capitulations against Iceland.
I don't believe it was a curse - but it was a very strong correlation.
But over the last five years or so the pattern seems to uave gone away.
    https://metro.co.uk/2026/06/17/englands-itv-curse-real-three-lions-record-bbc-itv-ahead-world-cup-opener-2-28800845/

Convert it into a 2x2 table thus:

    Channel Win Lose/Draw Total
    ITV 10 23 33
    BBC 21 09 30
    Total 31 32 63

Then feed those numbers into a chi-square 2x2 online calculator. I used this one and Fisher's exact test and it gave me the following:

    https://www.graphpad.com/quickcalcs/contingency1/

    The results were
    • Fisher's exact test
    • The two-tailed P value equals 0.0024
    • The association between rows (groups) and columns (outcomes) is considered to be very statistically significant.
Trying another one and chi-square gives us the following

    https://www.socscistatistics.com/tests/chisquare/calculator/

    Results:
    • χ² = 9.9078
    • df = 1
    • p-value = 0.001646
    • Cramér's V = 0.3966
    • So the difference between groups is significant and the association is moderate
    Result: Statistically Significant
    • There IS a statistically significant association between the variables (p = 0.0016).
    • At the 0.05 significance level, we reject the null hypothesis of independence. The two categorical variables appear to be related.
    • The effect size (Cramér's V = 0.397) suggests a moderate association.
    • Remember: Statistical significance doesn't necessarily mean practical importance. Consider the effect size and real-world context.
So yes, the curse of ITV exists, but it's not a big curse. Kind of "you will have a shitty job" instead of "you will be unemployed for ever and your willy will drop off"

Of course, kids today would have to write a bloody program and do ten thousand iterations, wheras I just googled for a calculator and did it in under five minutes. Also of course I could have asked an AI, but cut me some slack it's gone midnight. If I've made a mistake I'm sure some kind person will point it out, so apologies in advance

Thanks Viewcode. I knew it. I reckon if you were to further rank the results by quality (e.g. a 2-0 win over T&T shouldn't really go in the win column) you'd have got an even better curse. When I uninformedly tell people the results are significant I get told " no they aren't" by people who really mean "I cannot conceive any possible causal link". Which isn't the same thing. Not least because if it were a curse then of course you wouldn't; curses are by their nature magical.
To be clear, I don't believe in a curse. But I also don't believe in dismissing statistical evidence because the results don't fit my preconceived ideas.

I suspect once you take 2026 results into account the curse goes away. Perhaps the curse of ITV is simply now "you will be cursed by having to endure the views of a permanently angry Irishman".

Hardly, even Liz Truss gets £115,000 a year Public Duty Costs Allowance and makes £16,000 an hour now as an ex PM on the speaker circuit

It is extremely worrying to think there are people out there mad enough to pay to hear Liz Truss speak.
I'd they're not mad before, listening to Liz might be enough to drive them so.

As for Marie-France Van Heel, she's hardly the first Prime Ministerial spouse to have an interesting meaningful career of their own. The only difference is the rush with which Mr Burnham is Going to Westminster.

OK I've found the pre-tournament prices to reach the semi-finals, buried in the Racing Post World Cup preview supplement. Unfortunately the one picture a day rule means I can't post a screenshot (and there is the suspicion that anyone who really cares is probably asleep after last night's two quarter-finals).

    So the best prices were:-

    Spain: 11/8
    France: 13/8
    England: 7/4
    Argentina: 9/4

So the first four in the betting to reach the semi-finals have reached the semi-finals. (Brazil were also 9/4 but had a slightly higher average price.)
Top 4 in FIFA rankings made it to the semis

I did not like much of his politics, especially his kowtowing to Trump. He had more principles before then.

He remained a very vocal supporter of Ukraine though to the end, no matter what Trump said or did, so that counts in his favour.

As I forecast, admittedly one didn’t need to be mystic Meg to predict it, the conspiracy theories about the Senators death are already starting.

    This, from oddball Laura Loomer

“ 5 days ago, the IRGC publicly called for Senator Lindsey Graham to be assassinated. He was traveling abroad to a war zone the last few days to try to end the war between Ukraine and Russia.

He’s been home for less than one day, and tonight, his staff said he passed away from a “brief and sudden illness”.

Was he poisoned by a foreign adversary either abroad or upon returning to the US?

There should be an investigation into his death. Especially after Iran called for his death less than one week ago.

What do his staff mean by a “brief and sudden illness”?

    Poison?”

Teuchal is right that last night was an extremely poor performance by England, Bellingham apart. Their defence were extremely fortunate to only concede a single goal, their possession in the first half led to almost no chances at all and the whole team went AWOL for at least 30 minutes in the second half, despite getting Madeuke off the pitch. Kane was pretty much invisible for the whole 120 minutes apart from the odd defensive tackle.

I find it deeply frustrating that England cannot seem to make use of the talent that they have, that they are so uncreative, so lacking in penetration. There comes a point when you have to look at the coach. Argentina, from the highlights, don't look too special either and a win is certainly possible. All the real quality in this WC is on the other side of the draw.

Ps, why did he take Mainoo if he had no intention of playing him? He created so much for Man Utd in the last third of the season but he's not had a single minute.

Ultimately this is only possible because legions of people across the world are willing to invest so much in football. The more people are willing to care unconditionally, the more corrupt the sport will become. I suppose in reflection I should be grateful that my preferred sports are relatively uncared-abiut.

Getting to the business end now, and I think it's time for Rogers on the left. We're going to need help getting up the pitch in the next two games, and he offers that more than the others.

In most sports, if you cheat - and get caught - the consequences for you will be worse than if you had not cheated. This is not the case in football. And so cheating is endemic.

For feigning injury, a la Paraguay, I would bring in the rule that when it is shown, the wronged party is,after the event, able to inflict as much pain on the cheater as the cheater claimed to be in. This would also be visually popular.

Maybe I was dreaming. But I thought England had won, and are through to the semi-finals.

LOL. This is like saying "larger than life" when you mean fat and "old school" when you mean alcoholic.
    "Colourful" = "Arsehole"

"Divisive" = "racist as a Klansman"
    "Tireless campaigner" = "Achieved nothing"

The Mail seem to have given up on Farage.

PETER HITCHENS: Petulant, snarling Nigel Farage, the Thatcher tribute act with nothing much to offer

    Establishment moving against?
    Is it any wonder ?

Nigel Farage still refuses to comment on whether he would relocate the hand dryer at the Crown & Treaty Pub in Uxbridge at all. He does not care about national issues!

Why dive when you know dozens of cameras are filming you and millions of people watching? Mindboggling.

Most of the time divers still get away with it. Even when caught they usually are not booked.

Diving and playacting/faking injury, which is as bad as diving, is ubiquitous and punishment extremely rare.

It's a blight of the game but teams don't care and officials don't enforce against it in most cases as they know they will be blamed not thanked in most cases.

To be fair the diving Swiss did get a second yellow card, and their team had to play for an hour and a half with only ten men.
