Ireland is battling a PR nightmare over its continued sales of alumina to Russia.

The scandal comes as Dublin prepares to take the reins of the EU Council presidency.

So common they have a phrase for it, and that phrase has a Wikipedia page.

The industrial national champions have been especially hard hit.

But mainly it is the technological lead over China that is lost. China is dominating the new industries of EV's etc.

The longer I live in Ireland the more dysfunctional the politics and governance appears to be. I'd say there are lots of good reasons to move country, but unless you are moving from a dictatorship to a democracy*, moving country due to perceptions of how well run it is will only end in disappointment.

    * And the main advantage of a democracy is that you can complain about how badly run the place is without the risk of being sent to jail.

Of those leaders all bar Meloni and Frederiksen see their parties trail in the polls (Macron cannot run again for French president but potential candidates from his party also trail Bardella for the 2027 election).

Merz though will likely see his CDU still form a government with the SPD to keep out the AfD

These novelty politicians are a real threat. We, the voters, know that it's all a silly game and that we'll revert to the Tories (or if you're strange, then Labour) and things will go on much as they always have.

However Jonny Foreigner, who nowadays we're massively in hock to, sees it differently.

I think we need to tap Germany for reparations.

I'm actually in favour of certain essential items being available in supermarkets for 0p - e.g free.

A carrot. An apple. A tin of basics beans. A small loaf of cheap sliced bread. A small packet of rich tea biscuits. 10 tea bags. A single economy toilet roll. A small pack of sanitary towels. A pint of long life milk. Possibly even a can of low ABV cheap lager.

Products on which supermarkets make next to no margin anyway - if necessary the miniscule losses can be offset against their business rates or taxes.

Obviously there would need to be limits per customer and it should be basic quality and limited quantity to make resale and profiteering impractical (like Amsterdam bicycles were at one point and maybe still are).

This policy would render foodbanks and the associated complicated applications unnecessary, and ultimately eradicate absolute poverty. Nobody will starve - they'll always be able to get something basic to eat for free at Tesco Extra in the middle of the night.

Yet Polanski is the deranged lefty and I'm the heartless right-winger...

"I'm actually in favour of certain essential items being available in supermarkets for 0p - e.g free."

At first glance I thought this was a great idea. It'd just finish up with those products being low quality though. Supermarket carrots now aren't great.

Perhaps what we need is a carrot tax. Push the price up and make the better ones less of a reach.

Zack Polanski has criticised supermarkets for selling vegetables for as little as 7p

“This isn’t a sign of a healthy system… someone is being exploited somewhere”

He's so out of touch with the average British voter it's almost funny.
When you tell the average British voter how little money goes to the farmer, mercilessly squeezed by the supermarkets as they are, the average British voter is generally very sympathetic to the farmer. I’m not so certain the average British voter doesn’t rather agree with Zack here.

That said, the average British voter does go straight back to being the average British consumer and keeps buying cheap stuff in supermarkets.

Germany is having a nasty crisis - from the export superpower of Europe to years of economic crisis.

The industrial national champions have been especially hard hit.
    If only Germany hadn't Brexited....

    Oh.
To be fair Germany are starting from an industrial base in the 90%s whilst Starmer Britain are starting at -90%

TL:DR the Americans have effectively opened a shipping route close to the Oman coast.

The numbers of transits they are quoting through Trump's back channel are subject to various limitations according to industry sources (eg coming out but not really going in through Hormuz).

In our current fissiparous times it’s probably unwise to base much analysis on an ‘average British voter’.

I suppose his argument is if you want healthy sustainable agriculture you can’t impoverish farmers or make them debt slaves that need to cut corners and use expensive fertilisers and herbicides to excess!

Hard to argue against that, unless your trying to appeal to Telegraph readers by deliberately portraying him as an Eco Lunatic.

Always the same. The ones you buy go down, the ones you don’t buy go up.

Very aggressive pricing from SpaceX, but also a very rapidly expanding business.

No, Zack may have a point, whether you view too-low prices as a sign of exploitation or low quality. I've been of this view since one place was maintaining its low prices by turning its freezers off at night.

An interesting cultural phenomenon taking France by storm:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c78q215vyd7o

Giant banquets rile radical left in France

    They're revolting ...

Had an interesting conversation with a French friend about Troyes Cathedral. Unlike say Canterbury* or a number of European Cathedrals there are virtually no statues on the outside. The reason was that they were smashed during the French Revolution and no one wants to put statues back up again. She seemed quite insistent that there was a clear divide between personal freedom and what the church/state wanted to impose on you. Hence they are always revolting.

Perhaps a lesson for the Brits.

    * Canterbury has QEII and Prince Philip on the outside but Charles III has not made the cut yet.

Providing the food retained a temperature low enough to keep it fresh (and solid in the case of ice cream) that seems OK to me, though I would have thought just turning the freezers down and retaining a constant temperature would be preferable and more economical.

Yeah, the doors don't get opened at night. So it's fine. The temperature is still monitored. Unless they were actually physically turning them off...

Sam Bankman-Fried, the one-time giant in cryptocurrencies currently in prison for fraud, has applied for a pardon from President Donald Trump.

Bankman-Fried was given a 25-year sentence after he was convicted of multiple federal charges related to FTX, the cryptocurrency exchange that he founded and led, and its related company Alameda Research.

Just two years into that sentence, the 34-year-old former billionaire has now filed an application for pardon after completion of sentence to the Department of Justice, according to online records.

Should Bankman-Fried ultimately receive a pardon, his crimes would essentially be forgiven under the law.

No doubt that supermarkets negotiate hard with suppliers, but I suspect the Christmas and Easter cheap veg is a simple loss leader.
Though that's another version of the same question. Supermarkets are like any other business- they might do good so they can do well, but it's rare that they do so through the goodness of their hearts.

So- if they idea is to get people through the doors with insanely low prices on X, what is the Y they are making it back on?
The other stuff that people buy with veg to make a meal, typically.

They rely on most people going to one supermarket, and seeing headlining loss leaders which make up a portion of the overall shop.

This allows canny people to just buy the bargains and get other bargains elsewhere. But few enough people do that, for the model to work.

Now Palomino is a few thousand in front. 94% counted.

Is Palomino the bad one or the worse one?

Zack Polanski complains that food is too cheap

Zack Polanski has criticised supermarkets for selling vegetables for as little as 7p

“This isn’t a sign of a healthy system… someone is being exploited somewhere”

    Eat your Greens.

    Peter.

Right, but the power is more equal. I might be tempted to buy overpriced mince pies along with my 7p carrots but my livelihood does not depend on it.
Plus there is a reason why they do this at Christmas and Easter, and not the rest of the year. The time when people's trolleys are often double what they would be in a normal week.

If you typically spend £100 in a generic weekly shop but spend £200 in a festive one, then even with 7p carrots the supermarket is still winning.
