The industrial national champions have been especially hard hit.

Brexit damages the EU too. Thats what trade barriers do.

But mainly it is the technological lead over China that is lost. China is dominating the new industries of EV's etc.

I have some friends in Munich, which is a remarkably clean and well run city to my eye. To their eye Germany is "lost" and they have a house over here they spend a lot of time in. They are particularly riled by the decision to stop nuclear given Germany now just buys nuclear from France.

On the flip side I've loads of British friends who think Britain is a dystopia and would like to move to Germany. Even I am eying a retirement in New England despite my (possibly visa denying) comments about Trump.

You can't please people nowadays. The grass is always greener etc etc.

The longer I live in Ireland the more dysfunctional the politics and governance appears to be. I didn't have any particular illusions about it being well run when I moved here, but over time ones knowledge of particular scandals and failures builds up, and it has a cumulative effect on your sense of a place.

I'd say there are lots of good reasons to move country, but unless you are moving from a dictatorship to a democracy*, moving country due to perceptions of how well run it is will only end in disappointment.

    * And the main advantage of a democracy is that you can complain about how badly run the place is without the risk of being sent to jail.

Of those leaders all bar Meloni and Frederiksen see their parties trail in the polls (Macron cannot run again for French president but potential candidates from his party also trail Bardella for the 2027 election).

Merz though will likely see his CDU still form a government with the SPD to keep out the AfD

These novelty politicians are a real threat. We, the voters, know that it's all a silly game and that we'll revert to the Tories (or if you're strange, then Labour) and things will go on much as they always have.

However Jonny Foreigner, who nowadays we're massively in hock to, sees it differently.

I think we need to tap Germany for reparations.

I'm actually in favour of certain essential items being available in supermarkets for 0p - e.g free.

A carrot. An apple. A tin of basics beans. A small loaf of cheap sliced bread. A small packet of rich tea biscuits. 10 tea bags. A single economy toilet roll. A small pack of sanitary towels. A pint of long life milk. Possibly even a can of low ABV cheap lager.

Products on which supermarkets make next to no margin anyway - if necessary the miniscule losses can be offset against their business rates or taxes.

Obviously there would need to be limits per customer and it should be basic quality and limited quantity to make resale and profiteering impractical (like Amsterdam bicycles were at one point and maybe still are).

This policy would render foodbanks and the associated complicated applications unnecessary, and ultimately eradicate absolute poverty. Nobody will starve - they'll always be able to get something basic to eat for free at Tesco Extra in the middle of the night.

Yet Polanski is the deranged lefty and I'm the heartless right-winger...
