AP reporting that it's survey of Democratic National Convention delegates (excluding super-delegates who can not vote on first ballot for POTUS or VP) shows Kamala Harris with 2,471 delegates (self-reported) and undecided (ditto) with 57 delegates.
Note that total voting delegates (first ballot) = 3,949; required for nomination = 1,979 (50% +1).
IF these numbers are reasonably reliable, then Kamala Harris has clinched the 2024 Democratic nomination for President of the United States. In just over 24 hours.4 -
We REALLY need to take a look at how Taiwan does healthcare.
https://alethios.substack.com/p/unexplored-unsaid
..Taiwan’s life expectancy at birth is 81.2 years, higher than the US at 79.3, and comparable with the likes of Denmark and the United Kingdom at 81.5 and 81.9 respectively. What’s truly impressive here is that this is achieved with a fraction of the spending. The USA spends around 17% of GDP on healthcare4. For Denmark, the UK, and much of the OECD, healthcare spending is typically around 9-12%. Taiwan spends just 6.6%. After accounting for Taiwan’s lower nominal GDP per capita5, the West is spending roughly 70% more on healthcare for similar life-expectancy outcomes
...Each year, the Taiwanese government quango ‘Health Smart Taiwan’ publishes a book highlighting what they judge to be the most outstanding results from the myriad ‘smart’ (i.e. digital technology) innovations and experiments delivered within the past year. Last year’s book contains 70 such innovations. They range from dozens of different AI models which improve diagnosis speed and accuracy, to labour-saving systems for blood collection, classification, and routing...

One thing I wouldn't have predicted - while Taiwan has a demographic problem with its low birthrate, TSMC employees have much larger families.
...TSMC runs a ‘Child Care Benefit Program’ providing various incentives and subsidies for new parents, including 10 days paternity leave, 12 to 20 weeks maternity leave (both unpaid), and on-site age 2-6 childcare facilities12. All of this has been tried elsewhere, usually to little effect. Indeed, the benefits are ‘inferior’ to those granted in New Zealand by the government (e.g. 26 weeks paid maternity leave, 20 hours free ECE) - yet TSMC has significantly higher fertility than NZ (currently 1.56 and falling rapidly).
Marginal improvements to the economics of having children doesn’t significantly change fertility13. What TSMC has managed to do via this programme, and top-down reinforcement from management, is recreate a culture of children internally where having a family is normalised and where one’s peers are all taking pride in having lots of kids. Given how resistant raising fertility has been to policy intervention, the case of TSMC is clearly worth further investigation...1 -
ADDENDUM - here is the source for AP survey numbers below:
https://apnews.com/projects/election-results-2024/ap-dnc-delegate-survey/
UPDATE - Harris = 2,579 (+108 since previous report below) compared to Undecided = 54 (-3)
Hote that bunch of states (including WA State) have no reported endorsement as of yet, meaning both a) there may be some pockets of resistance to Harris nomination; and b) plenty of upside remaining for even more KH endorsements (put your bets on later methinks).
For example, just got a letter from 36th legislative district Democratic organization executive board members (7 of 19) endorsing Harris and urging WA delegates to endorse & vote for her. My guess is that some of 12 not on list were unavailable, or still somewhat hesitant (for variety of reasons) to commit themselves, as opposed to being opposed.
These may well include pro-Palestinian board members and delegates (most NOT big Hamas supporters) elected/selected both as Biden and Uncommitted delegates, who want to exert whatever leverage they can, for language in the party platform AND whatever commitments they can get re: ceasefire and other Gaza issues.0 -

The last five presidents all got elected while forging a unique coalition that was authentic to them: Biden, Trump, Obama, Bush, Clinton. All won states their party’s last nominee lost. The last president who got elected by inheriting a coalition was George HW Bush ‘88.

1957: The JOY of BUDGETING | Panorama | Voice of the People | BBC Archive
Panorama’s Christopher Chataway took a look at the widely varying incomes of its viewers, inviting some of them to share breakdowns of their household budgets. People from three different income groups talked about their household bills, how they spent their money and what items took priority when parting with their hard earned cash.
Clip taken from Panorama, originally broadcast on BBC One, Monday 9 December, 1957.

Hmm. I've just watched this "combative BBC interview" with Andrew Tate and I can sort of understand his appeal.
The BBC female interviewer is earnest, serious, humourless and quietly aggressive, and Tate is aggressive, and a dick, but also intelligent and quick-thinking and doesn't let her get a chip in. The main objection, I agree with Tate here, isn't what he says or the accusation of criminality, it's the influence and reach he has and the fact he seems to emotional manipulate women successfully, which really offends so many women. Particularly because they fear the consequences of this becoming more widespread for them.
I've seen stories of how this can be 'combated' by lessons about "gender-based violence" in the classrooms. What bollocks. I can't think of anything less likely to influence boys against Tate, and it might make things worse. Plays right into his hands.
Instead they need to teach positive male self-esteem and identity, and the same for girls, and how to explore positive fun sexual relationships and healthy experiences for young people within that. You'll make mistakes but get out there and meet people.

That BBC female interviewer totemises everyone in their lives who hectors and lectures them about how bad they are for being boys/ men and potentially being interested in sex with women. Solution: they need even more of the lectures.Taz said:

I find your position incredible: you claim to want a Ukrainian victory, yet fully support Trump, who is making every sign that he will withdraw support for Ukraine. I cannot see how you can honestly maintain these two positions.
You seem so in on Trump, I guess it's support for Ukraine you're dropping?
Instead, he supports them.
You cannot support or shill for Trump and/or the Republicans, and support Ukraine. The positions are polar opposites.1 -

The ways to improve productivity in health care are mostly fairly predictable and prosaic. Invest in technology, replace outdated buildings to reflect advances in techniques, train staff well, retain senior decision makers, remove administrative bottlenecks and reward front line innovation. Pretty much the opposite of what Britain has done over the last decade.Nigelb said:

..Taiwan’s life expectancy at birth is 81.2 years, higher than the US at 79.3, and comparable with the likes of Denmark and the United Kingdom at 81.5 and 81.9 respectively.
I was interested in the ways in which they've apparently improved productivity in the healthcare system, though.3 -

I dislike the guy on a personal level, he’s the sort of businessman and politician I’ve met way too many times, would go out of my way to avoid in a professional capacity, and he certainly wouldn’t be someone I’d want to associate with in my own time.
But I also don’t think he’s the second coming of Hitler, and think that a lot of his recent legal issues have come from a politically-motivated angle. The Republican project to reform the Supreme Court has been the work of decades, long pre-dating Trump, with the explicit intention of overturning previous liberal rulings from the bench as seen in Roe, which Conservatives believed to be an overstretch of constitutional law which made no mention of the issue at hand. Trump has a more liberal view of that subject than many in his party, one might suspect he’s paid for a few in his lifetime.
The wider background, as you suggest, is that The American Dream simply isn’t working for tens of millions of people. No, it isn't, that's simply you ignoring everything I just said and reasserting what you want it to be. It's an end to identity politics. Your response to any criticism of it seems to be that the critic must be antediluvian, just because some might be, which is palpably absurd.JosiasJessop said:
Anti-wokery is about going backwards; back towards treating women and minorities as lesser people. Look at what's happening in the anti-woke US right on women's reproductive rights.Casino_Royale said:
And, if the response is to now tell young men that they are lesser, and bad, you're going to get a backlash. And that backlash will be emotional and calculated to hurt on those they think are attacking them.JosiasJessop said:
Perhaps, just perhaps, the current situation is due to centuries of women being told that they're lesser (and being treated as such by the law), or blacks and ethnic minorities that they're inferior? That they're lesser, and bad.Sandpit said:
It’s the inevitable backlash against the wokery that tells young men, especially young white men, that they are inherently bad people. The online version of this, is also much more extreme than what’s seen in mainstream discussion.Casino_Royale said:

Identity politics must end.

The problem with the anti-woke people is that many seem to want to return to those days.
Tate treats women as chattel. He is propagating the line that women are chattel.
Young people don't carry any responsibility for the past centuries. And neither did the young women alive today experience that quite frankly. This is Wokery all over, and why it's a problem, and one I think that at some level you recognise.
Anti-woke people don't want to return to medieval times: they simply want identity politics to end because it's toxic.
A world where men rule; or more precisely, white men rule.
And you wonder why that's not appealing to women?
It's remarkable how unable you are to see this. I assume it's because it triggers strong emotions in you.1 -
I don't ignore what you write; I just think it's utterly wrong-headed. But to ensure we're both on the same wavelength, let me ask a question: how do you personally define 'identity politics'?Casino_Royale said:

I find your position incredible: you claim to want a Ukrainian victory, yet fully support Trump, who is making every sign that he will withdraw support for Ukraine. I cannot see how you can honestly maintain these two positions.
You seem so in on Trump, I guess it's support for Ukraine you're dropping?
Instead, he supports them.0 -

I've done that, and overall I don't regret it, in my contribution to try and support levelling-up from the place where I could have more than zero influence; on my issues certain things benefited - like the long term active travel initiatives in London and some Northern cities. I hope these are going to be transformative models.IanB2 said:
