If I had my time again I would have named one of my doomed schoolboy efforts to form a late eighties/early nineties post-punk proto-grunge behemoth “Urban Beavers”

    https://news.sky.com/story/urban-beavers-reintroduced-to-london-after-400-years-12982447

Then, when we reformed to tour again in the mid-noughties I would have renamed them “ASBO Beavers”

Mid Bedfordshire looks like the first genuinely 3 way by election for some time. Any of the Tories, Labour or LDs could win it

My gut is saying the LDs will have lost momentum, its all about Labour right now.

Batley was three way thanks to Galloway?
What about the formidable LD by-election machine that was able to come from third place in North Shropshire and Tiverton & Honiton?
Which is why they were in contention (though they were further back than even those). I just feel like Labour have upped their game.
Labour didn’t think they were in serious contention in North Shropshire or Tiverton and Honiton, and were happy to let the Lib Dems take out the Tories. That’s not the case in Mid Beds.

We have imported virulent anti Semitism from abroad, via immigration, and it turns out multiculturalism is a disaster
Virulent anti-Semitism has always been here. It's never gone away. Multiculturalism may or may not be making it worse; but don't for a minute believe it's a new import, or a re-import.
    F'rwxample:

Since the weekend, both @TellMamaUK and @CST_UK have reported over 300% increases in the reporting of Islamophobic and antisemitic incidents.

    https://twitter.com/MayorofLondon/status/1712538677925261434

It shouldn't need saying that antisemitism is a stain on the human psyche. But if you start blaming it on one specific cultural group, that ought to start ringing "are we (also) the baddies?" bells pretty loudly.
I believe anti Semitism is so ubiquitous it is practically a human universal. As I was saying the other day. Eg there is anti Semitism in Japan - which has never had a significant Jewish population

However it is undeniable that you will find it in certain places and times more than others

Eg Eastern Europe and Germany 1850-1950

    And

    America in the 1920s-40s

    And

The Muslim world for about the last 5 decades
No, there's a rational historical explanation: Japan was an Axis Power.

There was no significant antisemitism in Japan until the 20th century. In the early 20th century Japan allied itself first with the very anti-Semitic White Army of Russia, then with Nazi Germany, and the exchange of ideas including antisemitism followed their alliances.

Based on Nazi propaganda the Japanese equivalent of Superman featured this:

"There are about 13.5 million Jews scattered around the world. Hundreds of years ago they gobbled up all the world's wealth. Especially in the United States, Britain, France, and in other Western countries too, there are many rich Jews who do whatever they want with the money of the people...This wealth is used to increase the invisible Jewish power throughout Europe and the United States...These scary Jews have a secret society called the Zion Alliance. The goal of the Zion Alliance is...that all nations be ruled by Jews...This is a real global conspiracy."

Good old Trump never fails to dissapoint:

"Joe Biden and Donald Trump continued to clash over the Israel-Hamas war on Thursday as a White House spokesperson rebuked the former US president for what he called “dangerous and unhinged” comments about the conflict.

Speaking in Florida on Wednesday, Trump, the Republican frontrunner to take on Biden next year, called Hezbollah – a Lebanese group also backed by Iran and supportive of Hamas – “very smart” and the Israeli defense minister, Yoav Gallant, “a jerk”."

The career of Albert Ottinger is a good example of the strength of anti-Semitism in the US during the "1920s-40s".
"He was New York State attorney general from 1925 to 1928, elected in 1924 and 1926. During his second term, he was the only Republican who held state office, and was responsible for closing down the notorious "bucket shops" on Wall Street. He was a delegate to the 1928 and 1932 Republican National Conventions.[citation needed]

In 1928, while the Democratic Party nominated New York Governor Al Smith for the presidency, the first time a Catholic from a major party was running for that office, the Republican Party of New York nominated Ottinger for governor, the first Jewish gubernatorial candidate in New York history. The Democratic Party nominated Franklin D. Roosevelt for governor, and Herbert Lehman, also a Jew, as the candidate for lieutenant governor of New York. On the national ticket, Herbert Hoover won by a landslide over Al Smith, the latter's religion clearly a national issue. The gubernatorial contest, however, was one of the closest in New York history. Against the national Republican trend, Roosevelt won by only 25,000 votes, less than 1% of the four million ballots cast."
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Ottinger

Democrats did use his religion against him in his 1928 race against FDR; they claimed that he wasn't an observant Jew.

New York state was then, by a considerable margin, the most populous state in the US.

The careers of Louis Brandeis and Felix Frankfurter provide more evidence for the strength of anti-Semitism in the US during that time period.

Are you denying that anti-Semitism in America was an issue in the first half of the twentieth century? It was pretty fierce, at moments

"In the first half of the 20th century, Jews were discriminated against in employment, access to residential and resort areas, membership in clubs and organizations, and in tightened quotas on Jewish enrollment and teaching positions in colleges and universities. Restaurants, hotels and other establishments that barred Jews from entry were called "restricted".[14]"

Really? In the list of tge Jews biggest problems in tgis country, I don't think Tommy Robinson's mob featute in the top 5. And likewise, when Tommy Robinson writes his list each evening of people he wants rid of, the Jeww are a bit of an afyerthoiggt.

Well, the Egyptian government of Al Sisi does.

A lot of Egyptians support the Muslim Brotherhood. Morsi got elected with a bigger share of the vote than Hamas, and more recently too. Egypt is a powder keg, ruled by a military elite that took power by coup.

Having lived in Japan (like you?) and encountered the surprising phenomenon of Japanese Jew hatred, I can confidently say this is bollocks

The Japanese are an unusual, intelligent and inquisitive people who feel - I think - that they should be very special Europeans, but they somehow aren't, by some accident of malign design. Despite them being estranged from the west, they love ato adopt and adapt random western trends. That can be Lolicom, a love for Beatrix Potter, a fetish for Mozart. In this case it is anti-Semitism

And which is fairly unique in having by far the most integrated Jewish-Muslim community in the world. That is, the Persian community.

There have been Muslim demonstrations in support of Israel here. (Of course, this is at least partially motivated by fact that Persian Muslims hate the current Iranian leadership with extraordinary vehemence.)

The United States and Nato have urged restraint. The United Nations and Jeremy Corbyn have called for an end to violence. It is not such a fringe position. Already more have been killed in Gaza than Israel and no doubt Palestinian babies will be among the dead. What Netanyahu wants is unknown but unlike every other world leader, he will have spent years considering this scenario, or something like it.

Are you seriously claiming that mass immigration from Muslim countries doesn’t add to domestic anti-Semitism? Really??
There was once a poster on here who after having read over his racially charged posts from over the years had to plead with the mods to tear down this offensive material. In one of your more reflective and remorseful future moments you might feel the same way.

Are the chums of Tommy Two- Names also Muslim now? Is that what drives their anti-Semitic hatred?
Interesting to ponder what reaction someone would get here if they suggested that Jewish immigration would fuel domestic Islamophobia.
They would quite rightly be considered an offensive crackpot. Just as someone who proposed the reverse assertion should.

I am not exonerating the UK here. We too have an ignoble history of this. Tho for us it probably peaked in the 14th century
Both before and after WW2 we prevented Jewish refugees going to Israel, even if that meant returning them to Germany.
At the same time, we get the blame for permitting Jews to emigrate there.

Because we all know cash* is king....end of the matter.

    * I am not sure I even know what cash looks like these days. I recently went on some business trips and neither used local currency or even saw it anywhere at all, everything was cashless.
I have had €60 stuck in my wallet for three years I never get to spend when in the EU. During the short lived Truss premiership, this meant I single handedly kept the balance of payments from total collapse.
I have small quantities of various foreign currencies from previous holidays. I don’t know whether they will ever be used, although they are worth more than if I had exchanged them when I came home from the various trips.
I’ve tacked one from each country around the perimeter of my kitchen pinboard. Need about 4 more to fill the remaining gap

The goal of the Zion Alliance is...that all nations be ruled by Jews...This is a real global conspiracy."

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisemitism_in_Japan
What amused me was how some Japanese who believed in the worldwide Jewish conspiracy concluded it was important to be
on good terms with such a powerful people.

It seems impossible for him to lose the vast majority of his support - even when he says something they truly would be against you might get some criticism - a few of the candidates who usually dare not criticise him directly by name have done so over this, so must feel the base will be at least a little receptive to that - but I would be my house (if I had one) that by next week they'll be as fervent in support as ever.

It comes down to whether an extra couple of percent can be peeled away, which hopefully should be enough. It is a bizarre topic for him to push them on, in part it seems drive by annoyance at Netanyahu for 'disloyalty' to him or something, since it goes against their instincts.

This will be the same Trump who called Putin's invasion of Ukraine a "genius" move.

How there is anyone left that would have this man back in the Oval Office is beyond me.

I wonder. What if one of the proper bonkers preacher types with unimpeachable bonkers Republican credentials disowned him?

I just wonder if in Trump’s mind this was another Ukraine and he’s miscalculated that it tapped into the same (disgusting) isolationist niche.

That or he really is just doing Putin’s bidding.
He is basically mad. He is a pathological narcissist, and a very aged one at that, so it is all about him, in various weird or unappetising ways, as he gets older and sadder. He reminds me of my late Dad, obliquely

Ergo Trump likes other alpha male leaders around the world: Putin, Xi, the North Korean dude. They do DEALS, like proper alpha NYC businessmen. He generally despises weak democratic leaders. He quite likes royal people. He has especial disrespect for anyone that belittles him. He may actually see some genuine advantage for America in a new Middle Eastern position (he is good at that, seriously good) but it is all clouded by his increasing narcisstic befuddlement

Jesus Christ, America, give yourselves a better choice!

    I ask again

Are you seriously claiming that mass immigration from Muslim countries doesn’t add to domestic anti-Semitism? Really??
I suspect there are a wide range of factors. I don't believe the Jeremy Corbyn fanclub nor the Tommy Robinson fanclub are populated by vast swathes of Muslims, but they seem adept at their anti-Semitism anyway.

When you are in full racially charged shock-jock mode PB is best avoided. Good night.

    A smart cookie writes:

Here's a list of all the LD by-election gains from Con since 1992. Two things are striking.

    1. In most instances, the Lab vote was squeezed to a quarter or less of its former size;
    2. Those two exceptions in 1994-5, when Lab did fight hard and the Tories ended up third.

    https://twitter.com/DavidHerdson/status/1703123155248685218

Mid Beds isn't mega posh like Chesham & Amersham, and it's not remote like Tiverton. Those are the two demographics where Lib Dems can really work their magic and Labour don't stand a chance. I'm guessing that the demographics are more Eastleigh than Winchester, for example.
The last genuine 3 way battle in which Labour prevailed looks like 1982 Birmingham Northfield.

Both Labour and Conservative went backwards by around 9% and the Liberals gained 18%, but Labour nicked it by going backwards marginally less than the Tories.

I'm now heading further back for when Labour last completed with the Libs to grab lost Tory voters, if ever.

The question for me is on those rock solid GOP figures who Trump detests and has spent years attacking like Kemp in Georgia, who have managed to avoid being brought down. And yet who continue to support him if he is the nominee. I wouldn't expect that to change, but could they at last try a bit harder to persuade the base, even futilely, to not select him?

Joe Abercrombie summed it up well in The Heroes.

One character asks the wizard Bayaz why he does not use magic in war. He explains that magic is difficult, requiring things to act in ways that are not in their nature.

“Persuading men to kill each other is far easier.”

You do have a point but if they followed humanism history would have been very different . Religion was peddled to keep the masses in check so they would put up with abject poverty and being screwed .

I’ve never understood it and I can’t ever see myself suddenly finding God . However if religion helps people then good on them as long as they don’t moralize or use that to judge others . Which sadly often happens !
Or try to eliminate people who disagree with their faith. If the various religions were so wonderful, their proponents wouldn’t need to use violent means to convince others of their Gods of peace and understanding,
If they're right we're already getting screwed after death anyway, no need to speed things up!

Both before and after WW2 we prevented Jewish refugees going to Israel, even if that meant returning them to Germany.
At the same time, we get the blame for permitting Jews to emigrate there.

In other american news I see they still have not chosen a new Speaker.

It's hard to see a way out. If even 5 members of the caucus oppose whoever is chosen they don't get elected. There's at least five loons (relatively speaking, a lot more than that are loony) who would do that. Buy them off and you get a repeat of McCarthy, unable to do anything but what those few want. If the Democrats help get someone 'moderate' over the line it doesn't help any, since they can only bring to vote things they can get all their caucus to support, which is basically nothing, and they won't be willing to offer concessions. Crossing the floor seems to be pretty rare, I assume due to the near constant elections and primary process.

No, I neither loathe myself or Britain. I am just patriotic about some things in the curates egg of our history, and not over others.

Our history in the Middle East is not one that encourages me to think that further meddling by us would be a good thing. We should shut up and stay clear.

Do we ever get credit for it?

I fear Foxy has gone so far down the self loathing rabbit hole there may be nowhere back.
No, I neither loathe myself or Britain. I am just patriotic about some things in the curates egg of our history, and not over others.

Our history in the Middle East is not one that encourages me to think that further meddling by us would be a good thing. We should shut up and stay clear.
Yes, we failed the Middle East. We never taught them cricket.
