"God save the King" continues to sound weird. There always sounds to my ears to be a slight awkward pause before 'king'. I reckon the number of people fully comfortable with the new anthem is somewhere under 20%.

What percentage of the general populace felt comfortable with the old anthem? I imagine 20% is a subset of a subset.
Mm, does anyone really sing it often enough to become used to one set of words or another? People involved with international sports, I suppose... but I can't imagine there are many others.

    This morning's dilemma:

Do I stay at home to watch the fitba, or head down to the station to watch a Jubilee steaming through Airedale?

Nah, it's just a dirty, smelly, noisy, inefficient, polluting steam engine
    And absolutely wonderful
I did the connection from Wareham to Corfe Castle on Wednesday. Heritage diesel units.
The heritage line all the way into Swanage is marvellous.

I reckon well over 50% were comfortable with the old one. Most people saw it as just how things were. People just sang it. Now, it jars slightly: people think "we have a king?", and also think "what, that guy?".
  • York to Carlisle on the Settle Carlisle on a sunny day

    Wonderful
My wife and I enjoyed it hauled by a steam train - fantastic
Burning of coal contributed significantly to climate change over the last 150 years.
Still fantastic to see our heritage steam trains in full steam

That's interesting - thanks. Had never considered shorts an issue but of course if you're playing a game like football where you're looking down a lot, that makes sense.

What inferiority? I don't slavishly follow any football team, let alone some other country's, and I certainly don't go around claiming that the bloated cost of the RF is justified by the height of some numinous profile. 90% of which is the Ruritanian family soap opera element anyway.
You (and @Theuniondivvie did so a couple of weeks ago) get triggered by any mention or putative celebration of English success in sport.

To be fair, as I recall, the PB righties and HMG were extremely unwilling to support England (Male) at footie because they were all woke, so it's not a required shibboleth.

I think what really riles them is when a non-English home nation sports team/person does well and the English take pleasure in supporting them too. They just can't abide that their hostility isn't reciprocated.

Scotland will probably do better than England in the Rugby World Cup for example. Seeing English rugby supporters cheer for them in the latter stages is likely to leave Scot Nats fuming.

That said I can't cheer on McIlroy in the golf because my mother-in-law hasn't forgiven him for dumping his girlfriend as soon as he became famous.
Bollocks, chum. First thing I said was good luck to the ladies.

  • I think the President of the FA not attending an England World Cup Final, or any of the World Cup at all, shows that he doesn't take the title of President of the FA seriously. Its just another bauble collected.

That's not a point about the Royal Family, but having a few individuals collecting dozens of titles each of roles they supposedly have is just going to ensure those roles aren't taken seriously anymore. George Osborne was criticised when he had 6 jobs IIRC too.

England have not got close to the peaks of their play at the Euros which in some ways makes their arrival in the final unbeaten all the more remarkable. But they have yet to meet a team anywhere near this quality.

Look, you know full well most Scottish Nationalists like you and MalcG would rather see England lose a World Cup final than Scotland win a World Cup final. For Scottish Nationalists hatred of England is even more the driver than pride in Scotland
But there are many English who would, in reverse, apply the same principle if it was Wales or Scotland in the final, or even qualifying.

What inferiority? I don't slavishly follow any football team, let alone some other country's, and I certainly don't go around claiming that the bloated cost of the RF is justified by the height of some numinous profile. 90% of which is the Ruritanian family soap opera element anyway.

Wrong there. It's this idea thast you *have* to support a national team to be patriotic. I don't give a monkey's about the Scottish teams either.

To be fair, as I recall, the PB righties and HMG were extremely unwilling to support England (Male) at footie because they were all woke, so it's not a required shibboleth.
Neither do I. I couldn't care less about football and am not watching it today.

But that's not what your post was about. Your post was about nationalism.
It was: *English* nationalism. Not Scottish. Why should my taxes go to waste time on it.

I wouldn't, but then I don't particularly care about Wales or Scotland (though I won't say that to my Scottish Father in Law).

The country I feel closest to outside England is Australia - and I certainly would feel some schadenfreude to see them lose even if not against England.

The traditional ‘why don’t the Jocks support us’ psycho babble has started a bit late on this occasion.

Of course an English sports fan has never had their nominal national broadcaster pumping out wall to wall jingoistic boosting of another country’s sports team so they really don’t have a clue on what they’re talking about.

What percentage of the general populace felt comfortable with the old anthem? I imagine 20% is a subset of a subset.
Mm, does anyone really sing it often enough to become used to one set of words or another? People involved with international sports, I suppose... but I can't imagine there are many others.

I think the President of the FA not attending an England World Cup Final, or any of the World Cup at all, shows that he doesn't take the title of President of the FA seriously. Its just another bauble collected.

That's not a point about the Royal Family, but having a few individuals collecting dozens of titles each of roles they supposedly have is just going to ensure those roles aren't taken seriously anymore. George Osborne was criticised when he had 6 jobs IIRC too.

I don't really care too much about football or the royals, but I'm fascinated by the politics around this. It's a hell of a risk to have left uncovered, and it has the feel of something that's genuinely been missed rather than the result of a deliberate decision.

But how can it possibly have been missed? The team were known to be in good form, and there was clearly a chance that they'd go all the way to the final. Diaries should have been shuffled to make sure that someone sufficiently senior was available to travel at short notice. The government should have liaised with the palace to make sure that plans were in place.

Blair, Cameron, and May would all have handled this properly - though with May in charge there'd have been a chance that an engine would fall off the plane or something on the way. Boris might almost have missed it, but you can be sure he'd have arranged a madcap dash at the last moment.

But this government seems to have been caught completely unaware, which suggests that they're utterly dysfunctional. They need to sharpen up very quickly - they'll fall apart in an election campaign if they continue acting like this.

'Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.'

There are two aspects to this story. The first is football. The second is the monarchy. Both matter a huge amount to people in this country, for good or ill.

So to you nay'sayers from the dawn chorus below, I'm afraid YOU are the ones who are out of touch. Football and monarchy may not be of interest in your weltanschauung but if you're interested in life in the UK then these ought to matter to you too.

By describing the story as trivia you are abdicating yourself from British life.

It's estimated that about 27million in this country garden in their leisure time.

We don't discuss it enough on here, if being "interested in life in the UK" is now the test.

    Oh dear.

So the boss says one thing in public, and does something very different in private. Sounds like a company I worked for which proudly displayed a page of “values” in every room, but the cynic in me saw them as a parody of how the company actually worked in practice.

As we discussed yesterday, the NHS either needs to find internal examples of where concerns are treated seriously, and roll out that ethos and culture across the whole organisation, or they need to look at industries that do take these things seriously and get help externally.

I generally cheer for England - mostly in Cricket rather than football. I then cheer for teams supported by friends. I have lots of Scottish and Welsh friends so generally support them. I have many Dutch and Norwegian friends so support them. I have few German or Spanish friends so don't have any excuse to support them.

It also depends on the teams themselves. Whilst I have many American friends the US team was arrogant and contemptous of others so I would not support them.

the government is sending the Foreign Secretary and that seems fine to me. It's the FA's fault really although I'm not sure how much influence they have over what William does in practice.

It stirs something deep within the Nat psyche; hence comments like this.

Its not an English sports fan's fault that the other home nations are pretty shit at sport to be fair.
Well at least it looks like even the BBC might be a bit embarrassed to talk up the England rugby team in the upcoming WC.

    Pretty deserved tbh.

Do we know if William couldn't attend because he was already booked for another engagement? I'm mean if, say, he'd cancelled doing the prize-giving at, I dunno, the Blind Orphans with Terminal Cancer Society to fly off on a footie junket then the optics might have looked a tad worse.

I believe it has been reported he's on holiday.

Do you think he meant "looked at thoroughly" during a 9-month criminal trial into multiple charges of murder and attempted murder?

    No, me neither.

Exactly. Bad manners if you cancel an appointment and next thing you spot your appointee at the footy. Really says a lot.

Blair didn’t handle the 2003 World Cup that well.

Recalling the sports minister a few days before the game in case he lost a vote.

0% of the England women's football team went to private school compared to 7% of the UK population overall. How do we encourage more privately educated girls into womens' football?

Wrong there. It's this idea thast you *have* to support a national team to be patriotic. I don't give a monkey's about the Scottish teams either.

To be fair, as I recall, the PB righties and HMG were extremely unwilling to support England (Male) at footie because they were all woke, so it's not a required shibboleth.
Neither do I. I couldn't care less about football and am not watching it today.

But that's not what your post was about. Your post was about nationalism.
It was: *English* nationalism. Not Scottish. Why should my taxes go to waste time on it.

It's the classic Unionist mistake. Scottish independista complains about being governed by some other country (which is not what this is about). Doesn't matter *what* other country, actually: it's the contingency tha it happens to be Westminster. Instant knee jerk: Look! He hates the English! Racist!

Look, you know full well most Scottish Nationalists like you and MalcG would rather see England lose a World Cup final than Scotland win a World Cup final. For Scottish Nationalists hatred of England is even more the driver than pride in Scotland
A wonderful example of the knee jerk that I'm talking about in my email. Get it into youe head, chum: I couldn't give a toss who wins or who loses at the football. Anmy football. Any sport.

Quite clear Rish, the FA and Willy have dropped a bollock here. In the event Scotland are in the rwc final I wouldn't for a second doubt Anne will be in Paris.
Fortunately for Willy Wales are unlikely to present him a similar dilemma.

This should have been in the diary of the President of the FA, the date isn't a surprise.

If William doesn't want to be President of the FA he should resign the post and have someone else do the role.

I don't particularly root for Scotland in team sports even when they're playing non UK opposition. However I've always got behind Andy Murray. As much as anything because of all the Scotophobic types down here who are always hating on him. Big correlation between Murray hate and right wing tory blokedom in my experience.

You trying to pretend England are much better apart from at rounders which are children's games in other nations. One dody world cup win 60 years ago and constant humping at ASHES, tennis etc suggest otherwise.
We remember how Murray was British when he won Wimbledon.

I remember the day of that final like it was yesterday. Pubs all open for breakfast, with a large group of us queuing outside at 7am, barely enough room to stand by the start of the match, way too many people in by the start of the extra time, and walking back to my parents’ house afterwards, very much worse for wear after about eight beers - and it still being morning!

In the top handful of sporting days of my lifetime.
