Why it’s becoming harder for a WH2024 Trump victory – politicalbetting.com

The critical, first step of betting on a US election is to calculate the electoral college targets. Trump's path to victory is narrow and narrowing further due to events in Georgia. https://t.co/ALwqK0SwnT

Becoming harder, but not hard enough yet.

I get loyalty to a tribe in a very divisive political arena, but the sheer weight of issues the man has, on top of the epic selfish ego that drives it all, you would hope would eventually crash it all down.

    Just hold on, Joe.

It's a good challenge. I'm wondering if his current price is too short at the moment.

Does this actually stop him running though?

I think he'd run himself on the ballot from jail, if he could.

    Good evening

It is essential that Trump does not stand in 2024 and anything to help that happen is welcome

I have not been posting much recently and notice it was a rather unpleasant on here last night with @Leon leaving and some seemingly pleased he left

Unless someone breaches the rules of posting on this site, then expressing pleasure that someone you may not agree with has left is rather unnecessary

On representation at the the Women's Final in Australia on Sunday, the question should be asked who would go if it was the Men's team for the first World final since 1966, and in my opinion it is inconceivable the King and the PM would avoid going

Quite. Utterly not on for William not to go as pres of FA. This is the sort of thing he is paid for.

BREAKING: Trump’s attorneys beg him to cancel
his press conference where he planned to refute Georgia’s charges.

Trump's legal advisers have told him that holding such a press conference could make a guilty verdict even more likely.

    Don’t listen to them Donnie!

I gather he's going to publish a big report which 'exonerates him completely'.
His lawyers must be loving that prospect.

So Leon has really left the site? I thought he was just bluffing.

I didn't even think he was bluffing; I thought it was just a funny joke getting a rise out of Barty. People took it oddly seriously, so perhaps he'll rest Leon for a wee while for fun now.
Sounds about right. He's done it before, even as the Leon persona and not even doing a reboot.

Just another pathetic attempt by republicans to have a whinge at the royals when they would also whinge at the emissions and travel costs if he went to Australia for this one match

Interesting that you automatically combine republicans with those who would complain about emissions of any flying activity. There's probably some crossover, but not total.

I'm a monarchist. I'm not saying it's a dereliction of duty for him not to go, but it seems an appropriate choice, and would be positive PR on brand for modern sensibilities to be even more supportive in attendance ofo the women's team.

We weren't in the final at Qatar, that I noticed, and Qatar doesn't belong to his dad. He can do some photo ops with the loyal subjects while he's down there. The truth is that like all poshos he finds soccer the most incomprehensibly boring game in the world, and can't be arsed. It's not like tennis, which had his hatchet-faced spouse glued down in the Wimbledon royal box for two whole weeks.

If it’s a commercial flight, and going anyway, then the marginal emissions are very little.

Even the richest of the rich don’t fly private from London to Sydney; it’s way nicer to be in a private 1st class suite on a big plane, than spend 24h in a small one.

Haley? Seems like the invisible candidate, though we're assured that's because she's been doing a lot of low key leg work in the early states. Clearly not a NeverTrumper like Hurd or Christie, and presumably less hated than the traitorous Pence.

Utter nonsense and you simply do not know football

This is the final of the women's World Cup that should count as if it were the Men playing in their first final since 1966 unless you are being misogynistic, and Qatar has nothing to do with it

It is a World Cup Final and it discredits Charles and William if one of them does not attend

I suppose the issue with Trump is for the first time in quite some time there is someone who would be willing to ruin a party's chances if he is not chosen as candidate, and bizarrely has sufficient support he could even have the prospect of running even whilst in prison. They are completely trapped, and his ego is so massive I'm surprised he doesn't provoke a miniature black hole whereever he goes, and it doesn't seem like a bluff if he did it, even though he couldn't rally or tweet.

He's not going to be in jail come November 2024 though, even if they convict him before then, appeals and whatnot, but a fascinating possibility.

On a related note, we should have a Royal for the Southern hemisphere, based in Australia. Harry with a vat of Factor 50 would suit. With Meghan if she can still be arsed - she may find being a working Royal isn't so bad once her parts dry up. I think it would be nice.
Isn't the real issue that the monarchy is becoming a bit like Brexit down under?

They don't necessarily have a majority to get rid of it but it's a bit divisive and polarising, so they'd be met with protests and it'd risk stirring the pot a bit too.

Of course that is no longterm solution but that seems to be where Oz is at right now.

Why not send Edward (assuming he knows anything about either football or ladies). He is a royal, but suitably unimportant to send to a bunch of convicts who don’t appreciate or understand fair play.

Why? He didn't go to the men's world cup in Qatar last year.

Just another pathetic attempt by republicans to have a whinge at the royals when they would also whinge at the emissions and travel costs if he went to Australia for this one match
It's a World Cup final involving England in a country where King Charles is Head of State.

It's inconceivable that Queen Elizabeth wouldn't have sent someone.

She and the King can send the governor general
On a related note, we should have a Royal for the Southern hemisphere, based in Australia. Harry with a vat of Factor 50 would suit. With Meghan if she can still be arsed - she may find being a working Royal isn't so bad once her parts dry up. I think it would be nice.
Her parts are drying up? Poor woman.

They got both ChasnCam and the Sussexes in 2018, they can put up with Wills for 48 hours. Or if they can't we might as well end it.

Here it gets a little murky.

Debs was in a Federal prison.

If Trump is convicted in Georgia, he would be a state felon, and as a felon he would be disfranchised.

If he is disfranchised in his state of residence - which he would be, as it would then become Georgia - would he *then* be eligible to run?

I imagine the Supreme Criminals, ooops, Court would say yes, but I can see it being arguable.

Why not send Edward (assuming he knows anything about either football or ladies). He is a royal, but suitably unimportant to send to a bunch of convicts who don’t appreciate or understand fair play.
Or Anne, who at least is interested in sport and unlikely to draw protests, as out of the line of succession.

I guess Trump could run but it makes it much harder to campaign.

Possible he could martyr himself but he couldn't hold rallies. Probably couldn't tweet as much etc.

    Not sure effect it'd have.

Yes, agreed. He runs from jail he still gets c.15-20%+ of the vote anyway and the official Republican candidate gets 20-25% and this simply gifts Biden a landslide in the electoral college.

So either he's the official candidate and conceivably might win or he's not and he runs anyway, and definitely loses, and then blames conspiracies and cheats for that loss instead.

Not really. Russia winning in Ukraine wouldn't definitely be worse as it'd be an actual successful invasion that'd encourage other invasions and wars.

This dereliction of duty is on a par with that lightbulb head guy who couldn't be arsed to cut short his hols over Afghanistan. And if the King doesn't see this it's the job of the PM to tell him so.

As much as I love you Mik, and as much as I often agree with you I think it’s the correct call. We need to stop this bollocks of everyone jumping for sports matches. It’s sodding embarrassing. It’s sports people playing sports. That is it. I’m desperately hoping, for the first time ever I can imagine, that England lose the final purely because a million tossers are calling for a Bank Holiday if England win.

There shouldn’t be a bank holiday for any England or British team winning an international tournament- the players get their lifetime satisfaction by winning the pinnacle of their chosen sport, they likely make more money through increased sponsorship, the fans get their joy from their team winning. That’s all it should be.

I know self employed electricians, I know of people on ZHCs who don’t get paid when a team wins and the resulting bank holiday. It’s great for those in gov or media to demand it but then they don’t give a crap that it’s another day that the economy pays a price.

It’s a football final. Great. Every seat in a stadium should be fans not VIPs who don’t give a monkey’s in reality. He would be better off setting up a big screen in Kensington palace gardens and inviting a load of kids from London to watch it with him.

Why? He didn't go to the men's world cup in Qatar last year.

Just another pathetic attempt by republicans to have a whinge at the royals when they would also whinge at the emissions and travel costs if he went to Australia for this one match
It's a World Cup final involving England in a country where King Charles is Head of State.

    It's inconceivable that Queen
    Elizabeth wouldn't have sent someone.

She and the King could send the governor general
Sooner than subject his late mum to the indignity of a seance he could get off his arse and tell his son to get off his. This dereliction of duty is on a par with that lightbulb head guy who couldn't be arsed to cut short his hols over Afghanistan. And if the King doesn't see this it's the job of the PM to tell him so.

Can you even name the GG without googling?

I actually work longer hours on most bank holidays.

Not at this time of year though.

Trump being the next US President will be even more dangerous for the rest of the world than Russia winning in Ukraine.

Not really. Russia winning in Ukraine wouldn't definitely be worse as it'd be an actual successful invasion that'd encourage other invasions and wars.

    Don't overegg the pudding.
It could be a case of elect Trump, get a Russian win for free, though.

As a Scottish Nationalist, I think, in the event of an England win, there should be a bank holiday (England only) and wall to wall media coverage for weeks to come. It will add at least 10% to independence support. I wonder whether Yougov’s recent 3% increase in independence support is due to the Lionesses coverage so far. It has certainly converted me from an impartial bystander to an anyone but England supporter. Thank goodness cricket coverage is less jingoistic.
(Cue HYUFD threatening to send the tanks in even if Scotland supports independence by 99% to 1%, whilst claiming to support democracy.)
  • In 2020 Trump got absolutely demolished. What has happened since then to persuade people who didn't vote for him then to do so now? Or for the people who voted to keep him out not to do so again?

I am not of the opinion they need to be at Wimbledon either but at least it’s in the UK so they are truly representing the country the event is in regardless. I know we have had a carousel of UK tennis champions over the decades but I would hope if a foreigner has a chance of winning Wimbledon then they would still turn up in the royal box.

I’m just being a grinch because I used to enjoy the today programme until it got turned into the Radio 5 live three hours of women’s sport you MUST be excited about interspersed with some bollocks music item.

And to say it again, it would be better if Willandkate had organised a big screen with lots of diverse children to watch the match in some royal gardens in London.

In 2020 Trump got absolutely demolished. What has happened since then to persuade people who didn't vote for him then to do so now? Or for the people who voted to keep him out not to do so again?

Yes, because in 2020 there was mass fraud*, which Trump will expose at his press conference.

There isn't enough popcorn in the world for this. It's like the Keystone Kops, but with a frisson of danger from nuclear weapons.

*though all the evidence presented so far seems that it was Republicans doing the fraud.
  • Perhaps @leon will regenerate into @Byronic . Just like 13 is regenerating into 14 who looks like 10.

Either way, he'll be back. He loves the attention.

I think he'd run himself on the ballot from jail, if he could.

    He can.

I guess Trump could run but it makes it much harder to campaign.

Possible he could martyr himself but he couldn't hold rallies. Probably couldn't tweet as much etc.

    Not sure effect it'd have.

    Merely 'seems?'

An encouraging thought. I suppose whilst he is unlikely to win many people back his hope is a) Biden is more disliked and that depresses his vote a bit, even if those votes just stay at home, and b) those states which were very close last time remain so, and that legal efforts to depress the vote in those areas work, at least enough for c) crazier statehouses going along with him more.

This isn't the first time you've pointed this out (apart from your stiffy on the lovely Alessia). Do you really think people transition to get better scores in sports?

    Yes.

Following on from the discussions over the last day about the state of PB & lack of new blood, etc.: I've been trying to sign up for a while, but was getting stuck at the email confirmation stage - so perhaps other newbies are having the same problem?

I didn't receive anything as part of the initial signup process, or when hitting the 'resend confirmation' button (and, yes, I checked the 'spam' folder). This was with a bog standard personal gmail account; I eventually signed up again with a freshly-created Yahoo email, which worked fine (hurray!).

I realise that ensuring email deliverability is increasingly a ballache, especially to gmail - but might it perhaps be worth adding an "if you don't receive this, please retry with a different email provider"-type note to the confirmation resend page, @rcs1000 ?

In fairness the flag seems to be slightly fashionable thing in any case, it seems to pop up around the globe on clothing and tat in some odd places, and not just stamped on flags as a colonial legacy.

Seems a quite plausible outcome that 2024 is a rerun of 2020 only with more radicalised statehouses refusing to certify Biden.

One of the nice things about it. It’s fairly politically neutral as a decorative item.
