    Six o'clock theory fucked

I did feel a palpable sense of relief - even if only temporary - when the clock ticked over to 1 minute past 6 and there had been no change in the BBC coverage.

It is daft I suppose because I am not an emotional monarchist. I don't get all gooey eyed about it and although slightly saddened for a life passed when the DoE died, I was not really upset. But all day I have been feeling genuinely upset by the news about the Queen. For all the reasons SouthamObserver and others have expressed so eloquently today. This is a part of my life, my country and my history. Others might quite reasonably argue that it shouldn't matter but for reasons I can't really explain, it does.

    I must be getting old.
Yes. I put a postage stamp on a birthday card to my very elderly mother, and thought they have had the same person on them all my life

    Polite answer? I dont know
  • BBC news sounds excruciating. They obviously think or know HM is dead but can't say.

How are they going to fill the time?

They know she’s dying at least. Witchell has been on telling us that the facial expressions of the royal family “speak volumes” etc etc. yes he is a ghoulish individual but the BBC wouldn’t dare allow him to make such nudge-nudge insinuations unless they were getting guidance from the top to “ready” the public for the bad news.

    Her Majesty isn’t dead.
Bloody hell, there's a lot of posts for a not-happened-yet event.
The news broke around midday that there is no news, and there has continued to be live reporting on the lack of news ever since. The BBC is so sure there will continue to be no news that it has cancelled all other programming on BBC1 in order to keep us informed that there is no news.
It's as awkward as the live text of a test match that is inevitably going to be rained out.
They'd better hurry up or it'llend up getting announced on the regional news.
Supposedly George V’s euthanasia was timed so the better papers could announce it.

They should run an episode of "Have I Got No News For You".
If she doesn't die (which I hope is the case), then we should all sing this:

Oh, the Grand old Queen of England,
She had four grand old children,
She marched them up to Balmoral Castle,
    Then marched them down again...
    Good idea, lousy scanning.

"Scottish doctors approved breast removal for 51 trans teenagers"

"Fifty-one teenagers aged 16 and 17 who were born as females were sent to hospitals in England to undergo further assessment for “specialist chest reconstruction” over the past six years, The Telegraph reported. In theory, those as young as 17 can undergo the procedure, and children aged 16 have been “referred for assessment for surgery”."

So they were actually adults then.

You were instantly insistent that that story about the American hospital was true and must be true. I was sceptical and pointed out the likely problems and error path (having dealt with analogous problems where I used to work). YTou berated me for it.

More recent reports have confirmed the story was bollocks (so to speak).

Pointing me at some other story which I can't read does not help at all. Especially when we are dealing with 'children' who can be any age from 0 to 21, as in the case of that very hospital. And when the age of consent is. crucially, withion that range. "Under 18" is a lot different from "Under 16" which is what was the crux of the American story.

The news must get a little less "newsy" soon.
    Mustn't it?

The family arrived half an hour ago. The idea of the 6pm announcement doesn’t seem particularly implausible.
I think it will be something like. 'We have just received news from Buckingham Palace that, at 3:43 pm the Queen has died, surrounded by her family, the Duke of etc etc'.

Probably sound a bit better than that, but I think that will be it.
She won't be pronounced dead until they are all there.
Good job they didn't bother with that for her Dad.
    She was in Kenya.
I take it you mean announced?
Not necessarily. They will all be there today, the doctors may delay declaring her dead until everyone has arrived so they can say she died with the whole family around her.
Its like the not being able to die in the HoC thing, the official time of death does not always equals expiration
I listened to TRIGGERnometry last night, with Andrew Doyle.

This is a curious example of an institution strongly associated with the traditional right, redefining the meaning of word “died” to suit their own agenda.

Redefining the meaning of words is, ironically, what a decent chunk of the right get unreasonably angry about when trans people “redefine gender.”

Left and right, traditional and progressive, everyone is playing the game. Perhaps ‘‘twas ever thus?

Does truth matter to anyone any more?

    What is truth?

    Answers on a postcard.
They haven't said she is alive, tbf, they have said she is comfortable which is compatible with death. I assume if she were conscious she would be in good spirits, so she isn't.
I don't think anyone has denied she is dead either have they?

PM is informed by HMQs private secretary, then a message is posted on Buck palace gates and then to the media. A general 'play inoffensive music and stand by for an announcement', Beeb channels all cut to the news channel and a series of pictures of HMQ etc are played whilst they get black tie and background in studio etc ready to announce

I don't want the Queen to die. I like the queen. But what good does cancelling everything do anyone?
If the death is announced this evening, I will mark the sad occasion by drinking too much.
Early February 1952 was a very depressing time. Worse than your average February!
I was just reflecting on what a large proportion of the country have never known another monarch. Well done for speaking up for the minority!
I'd say, what, 85%+ of the country have only ever known the Queen.
Tbf, I've never met her so I can't really say I know her.

    Looks like the Canadians know...

    (From Guardian Live Blog):

Speculation over the health of Queen Elizabeth II grew intense Thursday morning in Vancouver after federal cabinet ministers repeatedly delayed a planned press conference.

Prime minister Justin Trudeau was slated to announce a package of measures aimed at affordability- dental care for low income families, tax rebates and rental assistance but the event was delayed indefinitely

Journalists covering the event reported seeing cabinet ministers and a senior aide wearing black or dark clothing.

Like other world leaders, Trudeau had previously sent out a tweet of condolence to the ailing monarch.

“My thoughts, and the thoughts of Canadians across the country, are with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at this time. We’re wishing her well, and sending our best to the Royal Family,” he wrote.

    https://twitter.com/btaplatt/status/1567919562284220416?s=20&t=9LhEqS1wprcgBfkBtuoVfA

"Trudeau had planned to be announcing an affordability package (dentalcare, rental, GST rebates) a half hour ago but it’s not clear when or if that’s still happening. A rather tense atmosphere at the cabinet retreat in Vancouver right now, officials scuttling in and out of rooms."

If I were you, I'd check *when* that was broadcast - and indeed if. And who did. It might be quoting someone else.

You don't want to be too quick off the mark with your wokefinding, after the last time.
    Which last time?

That Children's Hospital nonsense. You were quite insistent I was wrong. But it's all bollocks as I said.
    "All bollocks"

"Scottish doctors approved breast removal for 51 trans teenagers"

I didn't berate you. The only comment I addressed to you was this, questioning their denial:

"We do not provide..." is not a denial that they have done it in the past.

One can only assume, that the specific form of words used in the Palace statement was a hint to the broadcasters, that the event was imminent.

Huw Edwards wearing his black tie for a false alarm, does appear rather presumptive.
This, from the Guardian about the behaviour of Canadian politicians and officials is suggestive.

Comfort does imply prostrate and probably unconscious, yes, I’m afraid. Not sure it implies dead, I have heard doctors talk about dying patients as being kept “in comfort” or “comfortable” but not ones that have already passed on.
When a medic says comfortable, to me that likely implies the palliatives are in the system and have taken effect.

I am making no assumption of death yet, it is possible, but it is more likely that the doctors have called the family in in time and they didn't all fly up in the same plane simply to view the body. If an elderly family member is known to be deteriorating, the doctors don't want to make that call too late.

Don't be too anxious for the news to move on and announce so you can get down the pub, because it could easily be hours to a couple
of days, if the very typical course.....

    Damn!

Funeral day, government can plan for that at least. Then coronation day probably next spring.
I wonder when that might be (assuming today is the day she passes). Week after next? It'll take time for all the setting up and arranging the visit of heads of state. I assume Biden would have to come plus many others. London will be locked down for it.

I'll be in Greece for it if thats the case.
"London will be locked down for it"

No, it won't. Nine million of us live here and have work to do.

Granted, a small area of town near the abbey or wherever they hold the funeral will be 'locked down' – but that is on a rather different scale.
Sure but with Biden at Winfield House, for example, there are knock on effects

    Good morning

I find it mildly amusing that it seems polls have not shown a bounce for Truss when she has only been PM for less than 48 hours

She did do well yesterday and today is extremely important, but it will take time and not just weeks for the government to show progress and of course her refusal to join the chorus of demands for a windfall tax may well be a negative, while being the right thing to do to get the producers investing in the North Sea and at last a change in the narrative to a pro business government

I would be concerned if she is polling like this this time next year, but everything pivots around Russia and the outcome of the war

If Putin and Russia suddenly fold for any reason then things could change overnight, or as an analyst said last night this could go on for a decade or more at which time we will all be penniless

We should encourage investment in North Sea wind farms, but not in fossil fuel extraction. We all now know how real climate change is. We’ve made good progress in switching to other forms of energy production. We’ve got to accelerate that move.
    We should do both.

Climate change is real but tackling climate change means reducing our domestic fossil fuel consumption over time, not extraction.

Consuming Qatari or Russian hydrocarbons instead of North Sea ones doesn't achieve a single thing for climate change.
If we reduce consumption as much as we need to, then there will be a huge excess of production. New extraction developments will be economically unviable, in the North Sea, in Russia or in Qatar.

We'll just have to introduce aluminium smelting to use up all that lovely power. Just rejoice at that news.
We should install wind and tidal with a peak generation capacity many times our needs.

In light winds our needs are still covered; when the wind blows hard use it to create (net zero) hydrocarbons:

    https://www.nsenergybusiness.com/features/hydrocarbon-renewable-energy-honeywell/

The UK is enormously rich in wind and tidal capacity.
Tidal I agree with. If wind is many times our needs, who is going to pay for all those turbines to idle? Companies have invested to build those turbines; if they're not being paid to generate power, do they still get paid not to generate it? That's the regime at the moment. In fact they get paid more than double not to provide energy than they get to provide it. That would be a vast bill for consumers (added on to energy bills). We could cancel constraint payments (that's what I would do), forcing wind owners to find their own solutions to store power, but I am realistic that that would dampen the 'gold rush' of building wind that we have at the moment.
Duh! You have answered you own question.

The lasted offshore wind electricity contracts are being won by generating companies committing to 4.8p per kWh.

    https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-record-low-price-for-uk-offshore-wind-is-four-times-cheaper-than-gas/

(Edit: it's now actually ten times cheaper than gas)

This is only going one way.

Investing in hydrocarbons from excess electricity will be a great way to maximise the benefit of wind capacity.
Um, there is no 'Duh' warranted except for the very basic concept that you have failed to grasp. Wind is currently booming because whatever happens, wind providers are guaranteed money; in many instances, free money. Stop that free money, and you get diminishing returns and therefore investment, especially as more and more capacity gets added to the system, which is what you want. You won't get investors adding that wind capacity if half the time they won't get paid. Do you understand that, or shall I draw a diagram?
And when do you imagine such a time will come ?

By the time we have the amount of capacity you're talking about, we will also have multiple HVDC interconnects with Europe, along with a substantial base of electric vehicles, and a growing menu of options for energy storage.

The point of having excess generating capacity at effectively zero marginal cost is that markets will find a way of utilising it. In the meantime, incentives to make installation of capacity make sense both economically and strategically.
But your post is full of suppositions.

Firstly, you're supposing that those interconnects work as they should - this has proven time and again not to have happened - a huge project, multiple billions paid for by the taxpayer via the national grid, for a new West Coast interconnect to link Scottish Wind Farms to English power users, has never worked as it should.

Secondly, you're supposing that continental power users will want our power exactly when we're at capacity due to high wind. Why? Is it not more likely that it will be windy there too?

Thirdly, you're supposing that people will be able to coordinate their car charging easily with times of high wind. Perhaps they will, perhaps an alert via their mobile phone can buzz to advertise cheap power, but will they be at home? Will the wind last a full charge? Charging at night makes sense, charging when windy makes a lot less sense.

Fourthly, you're supposing that the much mooted 'energy storage options' will kick in, but why would they? We have the technology to store this power now, and the schemes are ready to break ground, but at this time, there's not enough profit in it. And whilst wind providers are conpensated so amply for not producing power, why would this be?

At some point, constraint payments will need to reduced, and eventually cease. At that point, watch investors flee. At the moment we have an industry where the ulimate guarantor is the taxpayer - the boom around student accommodation is another. These are not booms based on reasonable assessment of risk and reward, they are based on guaranteed free money.
