Nobody can argue that the local elections that have taken place this week have been anything but poor for the official opposition. Labour has done badly and no doubt this will renew speculation about the future for Keir Starmer who only became leader thirteen months ago.

He's not an MP, his tenure as Health Secretary is one of this things can be ruthlessly exploited.

"The rise of the Greens" Mike says

I have thought, and said I think on here, that Starmer's treatment of Corbyn and his merry people would lead to a surge in support for the Green Party. I spoke to a very political pro gambling mate about it, and he concurred. One to look out for when bookies start to do over/under %s at the next GE

I think that the thread header is a little harsh on Drakeford who has done exceptionally well in Wales and of course the new Labour Mayor of the West of England.

Its SKS that has been a complete failure. Difficult circumstances, Covid and all that, but a poor performance with no policies, no vision, no obvious direction other than hoping that the juggernaut that has just rolled over the top of him might veer off course at some point.

FPT - one thing, Mayoral results are highly swingable and unpredictable. Much more so than other elections.

We've got massive wins for Houchen and Burnham, extended leads for Street, and totally unexpected Labour upsets in CPCA and West of England.

I think Sir Keir will have to go. It's not just his politics that is underwhelming (that can be forgiven), it's that he's letting Boris and minions off Scott free - the sense of bitter frustration from the Left over that is palpable.

Burnham's clearly raised his profile quite nicely, but it's still amusing to reflect that in the 2015 leadership contest he came second to Corbyn with 19% of the vote to the latter's 59.5%, and in 2010 had been 4th with 8.7%, behind Ed M, David M, and Ed Balls. Third time's the charm?

Students and young people don't dominate Southampton in quite the same way as they do in Manchester or Bristol. They go to university, and largely move away after.

Time to get rid of this sleazy bunch of unelected benefit scroungers.

Prince Michael of Kent ‘selling access’ to the Putinistas

With Russia-UK relations at a nadir, an undercover investigation reveals the murky business dealings of the Queen’s ‘unofficial ambassador’ to a pariah state

The Zoom call began just after 10am. The bearded face on the computer screen from Kensington Palace was His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent and on the cream sofa in Cirencester was his close friend and business associate the Marquess of Reading.

Making up the quartet on the screen were two executives from a South Korean company that was seeking to hire the prince to help its gold investment business. What the prince and the marquess didn’t know was that the executives were undercover reporters.

They were investigating allegations that the Queen’s cousin and the marquess were secretly trading on their links to the notorious Russian regime of President Putin, regarded as the No 1 threat to Britain’s national security.

As the Zoom meeting began, the prince took the lead. He said he would be “very excited” to work with the company, called House of Haedong, which was seeking contacts in the Kremlin to further its business in Russia.

The prince assured them that his long-standing connection to the country “could bring some benefit” and drew their attention to the fact that the Russian presidency had bestowed on him the Order of Friendship, one of the Kremlin’s most prestigious awards. He added encouragingly: “I have never had any close connection before with gold and the idea makes me very happy.”

Earlier his private secretary had told the reporters that the prince could make introductions to people high up in the Russian government. “We can certainly help in that sense,” she said. “Even if he doesn’t have direct contact to the person that you want, there is a way in. There is always a way in.”

When the prince left the call, the marquess stayed on the line with the South Korean company’s representatives and began to outline the type of service he said that he and the prince could offer in Russia.

According to the marquess, the prince had a de facto role as “Her Majesty’s unofficial ambassador to Russia” and was able to meet with Putin. The prince’s “confidential” access to the Kremlin, the marquess said, had remained intact despite the numerous outrages committed by Putin’s regime.

Late afternoon or is it really evening all :)

Burnham vs Khan - a Tale of Two Mayors? The current Prime Minister was also once a Mayor so we shouldn't deride it as a new route to the top.

I can't speak for Greater Manchester but in London the Mayor has very little power - indeed, rather like the Scottish and Welsh First Ministers, if there's a problem or anything goes wrong, there's always Westminster and Whitehall as the scapegoat. Indeed, that seems to have worked fairly well for both Sturgeon and Drakeford thus far.

News from Newham (I know you can't wait):

In the Governance referendum, the status quo prevailed - the move to replace the Elected Mayor with a Committee model was defeated 56% - 44% on a 38% turnout.

Of more significance (perhaps) with next year in mind, the East Ham Central Ward was held by Labour in the by-election. The Labour candidate polled 53%, the Conservative 30%, Green 7%, Liberal Democrat 6%.

In 2018, the Labour polled 81% and the Conservatives 14% so that's Labour DOWN 28% (who needs Hartlepool?) and the Conservatives UP 16% so I make that a 22% swing from Conservative to Labour. Would that be enough to swing Newham from red to blue? In a word, no.

However, and we'll have to see if the same occurs in other parts of east and north-east London, this "could" be the first sign of the "Red London Wall" coming under pressure. That's a huge jump from one by-election and the political world could well look very different this time next year.

He's a definite lay as next Labour in the short term at least.

He's not an MP, his tenure as Health Secretary is one of this things can be ruthlessly exploited.

On the plus side, like Burgon he read English at Cambridge.

I’m with TSE on this one (bar the Cambridge bit). Two points.

First, what this election has shown (in a good way) is that voters are taking notice of how well Mayors do. Those who do well (Burnham, Houchen and Street) are getting rewarded, those who don’t (Khan) are being hit. We might as well have a post that says why Ben Houchen will be the next Tory leader.

Second, amongst the northern part of GM, which is the old mill town part where there are substantial WWC communities, Burnham doesn’t look to have benefited Labour who lost seats in places like Rochdale and Bolton. So his appeal in winning back lost WWC voters seems limited. Interestingly Labour did better in the wealthier parts of GM.

Andy Burnham is effectively another candidate who appeals to remainer middle class Labour types, the types who buy King of the North mugs (which is another clue - Game of Thrones is watched by the chattering classes, not by the masses).

The Greens have picked up yet another seat in Oxford City, so they're up from 1 seat before to 3 (though boundaries have changed).

The city's still a Tory-free zone - they were miles off the one seat where they thought they had a chance.

Can I just remind everyone that the Burnham of today is a different animal to the Burnham of 2015 who ran such an insipid leadership campaign.

Today's version would have won back then.

Yes, insipid and timid. A good friend who is a LP activist (and family friend of the Milibands) went to the hustings in 2015 and said that Burnham (other than Corbyn obvs) was most left-wing of the candidates, didn't present himself well but, she said, the females were swooning over his beautiful eyes?!
  • ydoethurydoethur Posts: 66,733

Not only was Burnham beaten by Corbyn, he was beaten by Ed Miliband in Labour leadership elections.

One of the reasons the Greens have done well in Sheffield is due the tree cutting controversy which Labour have handled very badly.

"Handled badly".... that's a bit like saying Prince Andrew handled that infamous interview badly.

One positive for Burnham he is a genuine football fan, he can take on Boris Johnson on that front.

Even though he's an Everton fan he's highly regarded by Liverpool fans for his work in getting the Hillsborough Panel sorted.

Once David Miliband was defeated by his brother in 2010, Burnham was the only potential Labour leadership contender as a Tory I really feared and still do.

Centrist in Labour terms, not fanatically anti Brexit and respecting the Leave vote despite having backed Remain, charismatic and Northern rather than London he ticks all the boxes Labour need

What about Jess Phillips, quite a few on the labour right seem to think the Tories would quake in their boots at the thought of facing her.
"Quaking" in that way when you silently laugh and your shoulders go up and down like Ted Heath?
Yes, I'm with you MM. Some mouthy Brummie who reminds one of a dinner lady doesn't pass the "door of no 10" sniff test...

Now that’s an upset. No students to vote for Labour or something else at work?
Students and young people don't dominate Southampton in quite the same way as they do in Manchester or Bristol. They go to university, and largely move away after.

Also, there's a lot of WWC areas, Bitterne, Coxford, Millbrook, Peartree and Redbridge and true-blue suburbs.
Oi, there's only ONE Redbridge - and it's not in Hants!!

Apologies for my uncharacteristically nasty post but….

You appear more interested in ideological purity than putting together a coalition to actually win.

You and @roger are two cheeks of the same arse, IMO

I can’t see myself voting labour again, tbh.

Sorry, on PT, I thought this was addressed to me and thus I have answered it there. Pls ignore. I have enough real spats without inventing them.

Eddie Spheroids would currently be giving Boris the most trouble out of all of those. Not sure he would win a GE, but the Tories would be having a really.hard time.

Andy For Labour Leader. Still have time. Vote for a Leader who really Cares about the Country. This can be our place and our time.

Seven campaigners have been awarded £24,300 after the police watchdog ruled they were wrongfully arrested during tree-felling protests.

They were held under the Trade Union and Labour Relations Act but charges against all seven were dropped.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) found South Yorkshire Police had no grounds for arrest.

Paul Brooke, who was among those held, said the arrests were a "violation of our very basic rights".

Mr Brooke, Calvin Payne, Simon Crump, Jeremy Peace, Gemma Lock, Kate Billington and Margaret Mark were all arrested and charged between November 2016 and February 2017.

Can I just remind everyone that the Burnham of today is a different animal to the Burnham of 2015 who ran such an insipid leadership campaign.

Today's version would have won back then.

Agreed I wish he had he would be PM by now

I think that the thread header is a little harsh on Drakeford who has done exceptionally well in Wales and of course the new Labour Mayor of the West of England.

Its SKS that has been a complete failure. Difficult circumstances, Covid and all that, but a poor performance with no policies, no vision, no obvious direction other than hoping that the juggernaut that has just rolled over the top of him might veer off course at some point.

He is SO BORING. I have just realised what is wrong with the taking the knee photograph, whatever your views on knee taking: it's in an empty characterless badly furnished boardroom. Could they not have popped out to the Mandela statue in Parliament Square?
Yesterdays we must connect with the public interview from his Westminster office with a shelf full of boring books the only other thing in shot....cut to Boris in Hartlepool with his blimp.

Andy Street's victory is the most impressive of the Hartlepool/Tees Valley hat trick. The West Midlands has more red wall-type areas than many think, but its demographics are not especially pro-Tory. It's also suffered badly from the pandemic. More here

So Andy Burnham has been reelected and therefore committed to another term of mayor, is not an MP and yet is 4/1 clear favourite with the bookies for next LP leader and can be laid at 5.4 at the exchanges.

    Clear lay surely?

Evening all! Still feeling zonked by the Pfizer flu, so after watching the best Formula E race ever from Monaco I had a sleep.

Still no result from London? Glad to see that they are still trying to remove Binface's historic win.

Talking about historic results, we're heading towards a chunky independence majority in Scotland. So the fun of a stand-off between the will of the Scottish people and the will of the English people is to come.

I really doubt it. CAM is an exciting transport project, although it could be expensive.

Probably (1) anti-Tory vote and (2) anti-Garden Villages, which Palmer was pro - hence high LD showing.

Most likely thing is the project gets canned now, which is not a good thing as Cambridge is choked with congestion and very expensive housing.
