Railways effectively nationalised this morning, didn't even manage to make the news by 6pm.0

Well it was all SNP senior people or senior members of the SNP team that did the accusing , they reported it to SNP who said they would hold on to it in case he made a comeback and as soon as he indicated that they used it. They bungled it and had to fold initial case and pay Salmond 600K in costs , almost unheard of as many times actual costs.Stocky said:

The nudge unit should recommend a nominal charge as a deterent - chargeable only when a test proves negative. They`re doing it because they are prats plus NHS is free.IanB2 said:

Different countries have different rates of infection and are further/lower down the curve.
Plus a lot of Team GB athletes go overseas for warm weather/altitude training, something they cannot do, and gives an advantage to countries with warmer weather/higher altitudes.
The fact GB athletes cannot train in Florida is of little concern0 -
So, what’s everyone think, lockdown or no lockdown?
I suspect it will be lockdown 0.5. No going to public spaces except essential workers needing to travel. But stopping short of banning us all leaving the house.2 -

I wouldn't necessarily expect that. The number to look at in Italy is deaths. There's obviously tons of untested infectionsSelebian said:
You'd also expect the peak in deaths to lag the peak in new cases by several days at least - unless the deaths that happen are happening very soon after diagnosis (or a large proportion before diagnosis - i.e. positive tests after death).TheValiant said:
On the face of it, certainly so, but its Monday and the figures are often distorted by the weekend. I'm sure the deaths figure is right, but the new cases could be wrong.AlastairMeeks said:Italy's figures are starting to look promising:

I recall years ago when my wife was pregnant, she was told by the NCT that a majority of babies are born between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
Despite all the issues, breaking into weekend working still seems almost taboo, and I bet both testing is down over the weekend, and the official coroner may have knocked off early on Sunday so there will be a lot of 8am Monday morning 'deaths' today.0 -

Police have launched a hunt for a customer who coughed in a Tesco employee's face and spat at a member of the public amid heightened fears about the spread of Covid-19.
Officers were called to the retailer's petrol station at Kingston Park, Newcastle, just before 10am on Saturday, following an incident during which a customer came to the cashier's aid.
Right they are first on the flight to the real life Battle Royale....0 -

Yeah... given the ~14 day wait until severe symptoms show, one might hope that there would be a sharper drop off in new cases after the peak, so I'm not sure we should expect it to be symmetric. I think the symmetry comes if you let the epidemic run uncontrolled or if you introduce less stringent social distancing measures. With more extreme measures (as we began to adopt here on Friday last and will likely reinforce today) you would expect cases to rise for the next fortnight and then to drop off, as many of those who would show a severe infection requiring hospitalisation would likely have been infected prior to the lockdown period.rcs1000 said:

You will need to:
designate affected employees as ‘furloughed workers,’ and notify your employees of this change - changing the status of employees remains subject to existing employment law and, depending on the employment contract, may be subject to negotiation
submit information to HMRC about the employees that have been furloughed and their earnings through a new online portal (HMRC will set out further details on the information required)
HMRC will reimburse 80% of furloughed workers wage costs, up to a cap of £2,500 per month. HMRC are working urgently to set up a system for reimbursement. Existing systems are not set up to facilitate payments to employers.

It’s contrary to international maritime law to have passengers on a designated cargo deck, and they had to get a dispensation for the one boat based on their safety plan including having staff manning the deck throughout the voyage. Perhaps the design of the Clare made it easier to get the dispensation for than the Victoria.Casino_Royale said:
True. They're still making people pour out the cars and into passenger cabins on some journeys though, which I think is crazy.MaxPB said:

Hopefully they aren't as complicated to operate as the standard F1 steering wheel...so you say I have to engage the left trigger 75% of the way in, while pressing the X and the B buttons for exactly 5s to put it in auto-start ventilate mode, is that correct?Sandpit said:

Well you only have to look at this morning. Hancock announces that in a week he has managed to go from 5,000 to 12,000 ventilators, has done a great deal with the private hospitals to get all their capacity and staff at cost and got over 7500 medical staff out of retirement....and the first response is WHY DON'T WE HAVE MORE.Sandpit said:

The Underground today has been a real disaster. On the one hand you have Sadiq Khan urging people not to travel and then you have the service reductions which I can't work out are because of drivers not being available or a deliberate attempt to prevent usage by making it difficult to use.SandyRentool said:Just seen the footage of a scrum outside a supermarket on ITV news.
Then the scenes from the tube.
That's why strong measures are required.
Add to that the fact we don't have a lock-down and those people who can't work from home and are compelled to go somewhere to work end up trying to get to work and it's a recipe for disaster.
The shutdown of non-essential business (to be announced tonight?) should reduce the demand to travel though I suspect some will still try to travel tomorrow morning because, and it bears repeating, there are people who have to work and cannot survive without the daily or weekly wage.
Whether the news of Sunak's largesse has reached these individuals and whether some of them will understand how to take advantage of said largesse remains to be seen,0 -

There's been a concerted ramping up of measures over time preparing people for either formal or informal lockdown, as much as is possible. Societal pressure is needed to see such a tactic succeed, and right now people are mostly primed to back stringent measures, whether they are formally a lockdown or not.Andy_JS said:

I'm seeing the exact opposite - young people, especially with small children, are being hyper careful, and the older generation are scornful of their overcautiousness. My father in law seems determined to spend more time out of the house than usual, to the horror of his daughter (and wife, admittedly).Casino_Royale said:

The only ones I've seen out and about who haven't been are young men. Anyone over about 45 years old takes it very seriously.
Both he and my father (less committed to dying early, but still putting up a good show) are of the Hardest Brexit Possible persuasion, which tallies with other data indicating there's a correlation there.0 -

Well, if what your alleging is the case, there will be further legal action to come.
It was stated in the evidence from the court that 6 of them were in a Whatsapp group discussing the allegations.
I did not say it proved anything merely that they were online comparing stories which I imagine is unusual, though I have no legal qualifications..

When a journalist sees groups of 4 or 5 people in close proximity on a beach or in a park, I wonder whether they're betraying their own prejudices in assuming that those people don't live in the same place of residence? London journalists are probably one of the groups most likely to either live alone or with just one other person, whereas in other parts of the country households are more likely to consist of a larger number of people.2

Whilst there is no doubt bad behaving in this ,it is an unhealthy trait to always be obsessing about other people in this respect . Perhaps we can all compare notes, mine said:NHS Coronavirus Service: We have identified that you're someone at risk of severe illness if you catch Coronavirus.
Please remain at home for a minimum of 12 weeks. Home is the safest place for you.
Staying in helps you stay well and that will help the NHS too. You can open a window but do not leave your home, and stay 3 steps away from others indoors.
Wash your hands more often, for at least 20 seconds.
