I suspect if Biden does win the nomination we'll see a lot of Obama out on the stump and general campaigning, which will be a real benefit for Biden,

Super Tuesday may show Sanders holding on to a clear lead and then he wins overall no problem, but right now this does look like the most exciting nomination race since at least 2008.

Greetings from south Devon, where two school kids have been diagnosed as having picked up the virus on a trip to Italy.

Have to decide on 9th April whether we can the Dart Music Festival for this year. This news has not helped....

Shame, as this is what we'll be missing:

Everything that is so utterly broken about America right here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-51715245

For pity's sake ... stupid stupid stupid bloody mess up. A perfect storm:

    - A viciously infectious novel virus
    - No proper healthcare system
    - No social net
    and ...
    - a complete and utter moron as President

Please don't confuse this with dislike of the country. I love it. And I love Americans. But the place is so broken.

    Vent over.

I tentatively suggested, with my usual lack of expertise not holding me back, that anyone whose death rate was more than 2% of their infected rate had a problem because there were almost certainly "unfound" victims spreading the virus unchecked in the community. The reckless Iran with all the tongue licking of Islamic statues is currently sitting at 4.4%. Tonight the USA is over 6%.

It goes beyond neglect. They tried to impeach Trump because he wanted to find out a bit about Biden's possible corruption. He should be impeached for this and his cuts in the CDC budget. He is a disgrace.

That, and I'm hoping that the Dem nominee will actually campaign where they need to, unlike Mrs Clinton.

Mayor Pete and Amy Klobuchar are both going to endorse Biden on stage in Texas tonight.

Picard. That show is warming up nicely.
The first episode was god awful. Have not ventured further
Don't bother. It's terrible, I'm going to finish the first season because I'm invested now, but if I had known it was going to be this bad I wouldn't have bothered. There's no single thing that's bad and could easily be fixed, it's absolutely everything that's just awful.
Patrick Stewart isn't Picard in it. He's a doddery old fool who looks sadly miscast.

    It just doesn't work.

He should have either made the series 5 years ago, or retired to an old people's home.
That could be easily reworked to apply to Biden with no particular challenge.

Are you sure? Do you have any evidence that a better funded CDC would have improved what happened in Iran, Italy and China?

This article isnt about the USA's own woeful response.

Using the average of latest swing state polls I estimate that Biden beats Trump 293 EV to 245.
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mMD5cZIBf7k8YoZcEjxMhmUm489cCPa0u9jgjULa1f0/edit?usp=sharing

On the other hand, Trump beats Sanders 282 EV to 256.

The CDC helped low income countries to address diseases that were potentially a threat to Americans. In doing so it gained a great deal of expertise and knowledge in how to control, analyse and prevent the spread of diseases. The USA urgently needs that expertise now within its own borders but the department was all but disbanded. The CDC of the Obama years would have been front and central in dealing with this virus. Now the US is one of those countries with a completely deficient health system unable to control a virus within its borders.

For completeness, overseas patients in the UK will not be charged for NHS treatment, even if they wouldn't usually qualify for care free at the point of need:

"Novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) has been added to Schedule 1 of the NHS (Charges to Overseas Visitors) Regulations.

This means, as for any other infectious disease in Schedule 1, there can be no charge made to an overseas visitor for the diagnosis, or, if positive, treatment, of this coronavirus.

No charge applies to a diagnostic test even if the result is negative. Also, no charge can apply to any treatment provided up to the point that it is negatively diagnosed."

I did suggest a couple of weeks ago that I thought it was very strange how there was no sign of it in the Pacific North West, when it has a very large Chinese immigration population there (especially in Seattle and Vancouver) and obviously much closer to China, so making trips home are more common during holidays.

SARS really hit Vancouver for this very reason.

Well doesn't have to be a vaccine, there are currently two drugs undergoing human trials to see what their effectiveness on this is like having already fully certificated as they were worked on for SARS. So if they are working well, the production of them can be quickly ramped up.

I try to keep a perspective on this crisis but the stories coming out of the west coast of US look very worrying
It's ok though because the Dow is up and that is what matters to Trump.
I hope I live long enough to read the inevitable tell-all books about what REALLY happened during the Trump administration. I have no doubt that they will make Nixon's time in office look sane in comparison.

Dr. Matt McCarthy, a staff physician at New York-Presbyterian:

“I’m here to tell you, right now, at one of the busiest hospitals in the country, I don’t have [a rapid diagnostic test] at my finger tips.” “I still have to make my case, plead to test people. This is not good. We know that there are 88 cases in the United States. There are going to be hundreds by middle of week. There’s going to be thousands by next week. And this is a testing issue.”

“In New York State, the person who tested positive is only the 32nd test we’ve done in this state,” he said. “That is a national scandal. [...] They’re testing 10,000 a day in some countries and we can’t get this off the ground,” McCarthy said. “I’m a practitioner on the firing line, and I don’t have the tools to properly care for patients today.” (Video, CNBC)

    Just shocking.

I know Sanders is compared to Corbyn but who does Biden compare with

I have a poor knowledge of the candidates but I do want Trump out but not to Sanders

    Neil Kinnock.
    That was 30 years ago.

Now he's comparable to Neil Kinnock with early signs of dementia.
    Okay that was rather good

Joe Biden as President = Patrick Stewart playing Picard.

An awesome idea - five years ago...
Lets not overblow it. Even five years ago Biden was awful, that's why he didn't run when he had the incumbency of being Veep.

How has it come to this that the Democratic establishment are rallying behind a man whose mental faculties are visibly failing?

Yes, a late closing recovery that doesn’t appear justified by the emerging US virus news.

At the press conference today, the guy in charge of New York was talking about hoping to get the capacity to do 1000 test a day by the end of the week. That seems a tiny amount for such a populous area.

It's so cool, and suggest a few days ago that there would be a substantial outbreak.

And it has concerned me for a while as I am fully aware of the Chinese connections to Vancouver.

My wife and I are due to fly there in May and am carefully watching developments and receiving advice from my son and daughter in law who live there

If he's ahead in exit polls he's a mile ahead in the real vote. Didn't even realise they were having an election tbh.

Really. The US are in a mess then

Why doesn't Michelle Obama or someone sensible stand
Michelle Obama isn't a politician and people have been asking that question for months.

Presidential candidates were once regularly state governors but now they are decrepit Washington politicians.
I'll add that the "After Hilary it will be Michelle followed by Chelsea then the Obama girls" talk in 2016 would certainly have boosted Trump.

I suspect many voters don't think the Presidency is something which should be passed around members of the same family.

It bothered a lot then. Mainly from the blue corner.

At least Dubya had been a state Governor. People touting Michelle is nonsense, what state has she been Governor of? What qualifications has she got?

I agree. The virus appears to have reached Italy late January and the cases emerged during February. We are barely in March and look where they are now. Project the north west coast situation forward a month and it doesn’t look good.

We can all see his mental faculties are failing.

Say that to Biden supporters and they don't even deny it, they're just like "at least its not Trump or Sanders" as if that makes everything great.

Between this election and not testing for COVID America is fucked.

If Sanders is nominee, Trump is a bet.
If Biden is nominee, Trump is a lay.

Surely - given Covid-19 - the real question is whether the Presidential election is Sanders' VP vs Pence or Biden's VP vs Pence.

There are specific reasons why we need to visit our son in Vancouver and it will be a last minute decision if we have to cancel
