King Cole, you don't remember the plans for the Patrick Party?

Yes I suppose so but I would have expected a couple of eagles or even unicorns, rampant.Scrapheap_as_was said:

So 'The Independent Group' is likely to be a larger MP grouping than the Lib Dems then?
Presuming people like John Woodcock join up with it too?0 -
I'd forgotten that only two of the Gang of Four were sitting MPs.
Could be the same here.0 -

So...not an 'offical' party, at the moment I guess?0
-
MASSIVE blow to the Lib Dems, this. A bunch of Labour MPs decide Labour are too 'Laboury' for them, resign, but instead of defecting to the existing well-established and well-respected Centrist party they form their own new one. Obvious outcome is that the Centrist vote gets befuddled and split and the Lib Dems chances of winning the next election and therefore of forming the next government are severely hampered.

That suggests not a new party, but just flouncing out of their current party.El_Capitano said:It does say The Independent Group.

King Cole, was an idea involving Miss Cyclefree, Mr. Patrick et al. for an essentially sensible party that's fiscally tight and socially liberal.0

Well tired old timeserver Gapes hates the LibDems so not much prospect of a centre deal there.0

So all that, and there’s no new party.Scott_P said:0 -
If you think the Lib Dems and the Independent Group are going to put candidates up against each other, I have a bridge to sell you.kinabalu said:MASSIVE blow to the Lib Dems, this. Who is sitting in the stool? And why?0

That's a good point. When 52% of the population are prepared to line up behind Farage who stands in front of a racist/Islamaphobic poster then it's fair to say we live in a prejudiced country.Dura_Ace said:

I suspect that's the end of them, politically, at the next election. With a 'party' it would be difficult; without, even if the LD's tactically support them, it'll be impossible.Morris_Dancer said:Interesting there's no new party. What'll they do come election time?

Yes it is. Erm, how exactly though? Theresa May gets an extra joke at PMQs but then what? These MPs presumably won't vote with her. The constituency parties will pick replacement candidates for the next election.Big_G_NorthWales said:This is seriously bad for Corbyn

Berger mentioned a website - which I don't think is up yet - but otherwise there's no sign of a pitch for councillors, members, or the public to join anything.0

The name seems selected to keep the door open for a handful of Tory MPs in future.0

Distinct lack of Tories in that group. Solid work by the whips. Hopefully we can stop this stupid deselection game otherwise some MPs who have nothing to lose will join this breakaway.0

It is astonishing in the unremitting attack on Corbyn and those around him. It is not just the EU but the wider anti-semitism, the anti west attitude and bullyingSlackbladder said:This is full on attack ripping corbs to shreds
The question for all remaining labour mps is are they prepared to carry on endorsing Corbyn or are they willing to join the independent group0 -

Googling 'The Independent Group' brings up this from Wikipedia:
The Independent Group (IG) met at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London, England, from 1952 to 1955. The IG consisted of painters, sculptors, architects, writers and critics who wanted to challenge prevailing modernist approaches to culture. They introduced mass culture into debates about high culture, re-evaluated modernism and created the "as found" or "found object" aesthetic.[1] The subject of renewed interest in a post disciplinary age, the IG was the topic of a two-day, international conference at the Tate Britain in March 2007. The Independent Group is regarded as the precursor to the Pop Art movement in Britain'0 -
Thx. And there are the "donate" and "support" tags, which make no sense unless some sort of organisation is coming.JonathanD said:

Will there be a diddy McIndependent Group? Would have thought Kezia, Ian Murray & Anas should be up for it?0

OK well the main question is simple: is this a mini-opposition breakaway Labour group working to overthrow the hated Tories, or is it a come all ye cross-party, centrist grouping.
Website seems to suggest the latter; the speeches the former.0 -
