  • Report from Whitehaven News reporter at the counting hall:

"The ballot boxes that arrived earlier were the postal votes. I only saw four being brought in.

Bearing in mind that in 2015 there were 12,218 postal votes in Copeland, of which 9,737 were returned, I'm not sure if the four boxes for the by-election were all of them or not, plus I don't know how many postal votes fit in a box."

Anybody know about the possible capacity of these postal vote boxes?

    Maybe we need a spreadsheet.

Copeland update: Tories have been calm all campaign because they weren't favourites. Canvass returns look strong so now they feel they can win it. So they have something to lose rather nothing to lose. SOOOO, now...mild panic. Squeaky bum time they tell me!

UKIP not talking to me at all...sign of a loss.

Labour in gallows mood. They say Stoke is won unless they have completely got it wrong. They think Copeland is lost, but they feel better than they did earlier, because of the beer, so they may sneak a victory!. That's all sentimental, mind.

    DYOR

The Tories have been the bookies' favourites to win Copeland for pretty much the whole campaign.

That implies that circa 25% of the total votes cast in 2015 were postal votes. That is likely to rise to 30% + in this by election.

Leicester would have a better chance of staying up if they had kept Ranieri and sacked the team.

I would love to see players sacked, in general not just with Leicester, but seeing as they are "assets" they get away with murder.

Indeed, they have, but as people on here say, that is what the betters think, not the parties. But Tories never felt like favourites. I think it has been Labour held for 60 years. You don't win back those constituencies when in govt. And our Harry Hayfield says Labour win.

Too late for that! The window closed a month ago.

Remember that Ranieri built on the success of Pearson. Last season's run started against West Ham in March 15.

Ranieri is a great manager, but wherever he has gone it has been fairly shortlived success.

And Clough did it with Derby too. But then I think Clough was doing it in an era when it was easier to make marginal gains. Today the market is very efficient so it's very difficult to significantly overachieve.
The really great manager of that era was the one who is never talked about.

Took over from a loudmouth with a huge reputation and did far better but because he wasn't a loudmouth he isn't remembered.

It's hard to understand why, unless the Labour Party is collapsing, like the Liberals in the 1920's, as opposed to being just very unpopular. If the Tories win Copeland, it's the best result for a governing party since 1879.

I was listening to a radio program whilst driving over the peaks with a man from the USA who worked with nuclear weapons in his time. Essentially he put forward that the US and Russia with their armaments kept world peace through MAD. He made the point that the (far smaller) armaments of say France, UK and some others essentially added zip to the total security of the world.

Why would they put the postal votes into ballot boxes?

Where I live all the postal votes are put into sealed bags, then, after the ballot boxes arrive from the polling stations, the polling station votes have been verified to make sure the numbers of votes in the boxes match the number marked on the register.

Once this is done the sealed bags are opened and the count proper begins. No need to put the postal votes into boxes.

UKIP 4.3 / Tories 15.5 midpoints Betfair at the moment. Seeing as that is pretty much 100% of the market without Labour, just divide them ?

    Which yields 3.6 ?

Possibly, but I'm convinced part of the reason for the sheer intensity on, shall we say, sometimes less significant causes, is because those have a greater chance of success, partly as the bar is set lower, partly because its easier of course, and partly because since they are less significant opponents are more likely to give in.

    Serious issues are hard.

This is not to say that smaller issues cannot still be reasonable to protest, at times, but the proportion of energy focused on them is out of whack, even when other more serious topics are also brought up.

Schadenfreude seems somehow inappropriate to add to the German here.

UKIP 4.3 / Tories 15.5 midpoints Betfair at the moment. Seeing as that is pretty much 100% of the market without Labour, just divide them ?

    Which yields 3.6 ?

    I make it 2/7 & 7/2 off that?

23.2/29.6=78.3% chance of UKIP 21.7% chance of Con
