The Sun's gloating, while understandable, seems a bit off-key given the innocent (and even the guilty) lives involved in the break-up of two marriages.

It would not surprise me if the front page has been toned down by the final edition.

Will @sajidjavid want to appoint @didoharding to head @nhs? Saying no would be an early win with the public.

Health is a poisoned chalice. There is so much bad news to come, and very little good.

Was Eden the last Sec of State for Health to reach the top job?
Eden wasn’t Health Secretary. He went straight from Junior Minister to Foreign Secretary. The only other role he held - briefly - was Dominion Secretary and then War Secretary.

The last Health Secretary to make it to PM was in fact Neville Chamberlain (1922-23 and 1924-29).
So none since the creation of the NHS...
    No.

Equally, only one Secretary of State for Education has ever become PM.

I’m fairly sure I don’t need to tell anyone who that was...

Interestingly I think only two ministers have ever been both Health and Education Secretary. Alan Johnson was one. Any guesses as to the other?
That old friend of Mr Eagles, Ken Clarke.
    Correct.
    You've forgot Sir Keith Joseph.

Somewhat to my surprise my housemate, entirely without prompting from me as I have only just seen this news, said Hancock was gone and that was a shame, as they liked him. They said everyone they know is a hypocrite (I presume that includes me, but I try not to take offence) so he shouldn't have had to resign.

Not that I can imagine it to be an easy conversation to have at the best of times, but "Look, I'm leaving you and am telling you now because it'll be in the media tomorrow so you may want to turn off your phone, and now I have to tell the PM" is probably a real gut punch.

    Yeah Hancock is done.

Matt Hancock faces an investigation after using a personal email account instead of an official address during the pandemic in a breach of government guidelines.

Since March last year the health secretary has routinely used a private account to conduct government business, concealing information from his own officials and potentially the public, according to documents obtained by The Sunday Times.

It means that the government does not hold records of much of Hancock’s decision-making, including negotiating multi-million pound PPE contracts, setting up the £37 billion Test and Trace programme and overseeing the government’s care homes strategy.

The disclosure of Hancock’s secret account appears in minutes of a meeting between senior officials at the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) in December.

Cabinet Office guidance states that ministers should use official email in order to ensure that there is evidence of important decisions and proper internal scrutiny.

Bye. Good riddance. Lying hypocritical twat.

Agreed and his successor needs to confirm freedom on the 19th July
Why would the policy change simply because the person is?
For starters it was not confirmed that it would not be July 19th, so if it was confirmed that would not be a policy change.

As to why the personnel change might alter things, well, people hold different opinions, and retaining things in context of a high profile hypocritical breach may be politically harder.

Maybe if he spent less time in post taking notes for inevitable tell all reveals, and less time 'tricking' someone he is supposed to be advising, more people would listen to him when he makes a good point?

I feel like he spends his time yelling 'Why won't anyone listen to me?' only to be told 'It's the yelling'.

But its not just this country. Politicians constantly think they are so smart that they will get around those silly rules about government business being done on government accounts. You get away with it for awhile, but you know it will get caught.

And I'm pretty sure in this country at least doing official business on personal accounts won't prevent the need to disclose it if demanded.

A few months ago I mentioned Amazon spending $1 billion making 5 seasons of their Lord of the Rings TV series.

It is set long before all the Hobbit/LotR stuff, and there are apparently very heavy restrictions upon the producers from the Tolkien estate about what they can use and about sticking to the facts of Tolkien's work rather than any "rebooting". Apparently Amazon are now planning to spend $465 million for the first season alone.

That's on a par with what the BBC spends on all film and drama production in a year.
What could they possibly spend it all on? Sounds wasteful.

    Wise move from Bale.

Isn’t this the series where the Tolkien estate won’t let them use any material from the actual The Lord of the Rings novel?

Glad to see he’s not bitter about having to admit he threatened an employee, exceeded his authority, stole a phone and completely failed in his bid to install a set of similarly talentless losers at the Treasury by stealth.

A dangerous man, still. The sooner somebody nails him for one of his many breaches of the law, the better.
    What?

I thought I have been paying attention, but what’s all that you said?
    The Special Adviser case:

    https://www.theneweuropean.co.uk/brexit-news/westminster-news/sajid-javid-treasury-adviser-pay-out-6318098

He forced her to hand over her personal phone - which is theft. And then threatened her with physical violence if she didn’t leave her job - which was both making threats and exceeding his authority, as only the PM can remove SPADs. About eight months ago, they had to admit all this and pay up a huge sum to dodge an employment tribunal.

Then, he told Javid that he wanted to appoint all his SPADs in a bid to bring the Treasury under his personal control. He assumed Javid would take it to remain Chancellor, especially as the budget was only a few days away. Javid refused and walked out. So he was very publicly branded as having led a power grab and his control over Whitehall actually weakened.

What he’s doing now is trying to spin these two major reverses into master plans. Psychological flaw that means he can’t ever admit to having been wrong. Just as he retcons his blogposts.

What they really show is he’s pompous, arrogant, reckless and not very bright.

But everyone in education knew that already.

This is a bit of a worry if the idea that this was in part a political hit to force the lifting of restrictions. johnson might not like the idea he's been bounced and opt for an extension (especially if polling is still favourable on the back of rising case numbers) as a massive 'feck you'. So it could backfire, even if ultimately it was Hancock's fault.

Ray Kurzweil was ( and is ? ) one of the great pioneers of electronic sound and synthesizers, like Peter Zinovieff, who died today, and taught the Beatles to use some of the first synthesizers. Ray Kurzweil was the equivalent genius inventor for the 1980s, creating digital orchestras for the first time, and like no-one ever had before.

One would've thought it likely. One consequence of Johnson having put Sajid Javid back into bat again is that, presumably, his hand will be strengthened significantly the second time around?

Even if the PM still looks upon Dido Harding sympathetically, Javid will be in a strong position to reject her regardless. After all, even Johnson will struggle to wibble his way out of losing the same senior cabinet minister twice.

So I generally support whistleblowing, ie people with privileged access to secret information publicizing it to reveal wrongdoing. However the *security camera* aspect of this thing seems kind of outrageous to me. I can't quite explain why watching and leaking the security camera footage is bad, but if it had been, say, a memo that the cleaner found and leaked that would have been good.

Does anyone have the same intuition, or is it just me? If anyone else has it, can anyone explain the difference?

Disagree about the cleaner. Cleaners, and other auxiliary staff should not be leaking things that they find without real knowledge of what it is they are leaking.

basically any whistleblower should have suffivient knowldge of what they are leaking to be able to justify themselves if questioned.

I've been worried that they have to be so tightly restricted (Lord of the Rings is good for the story and characters, the lore is the icing on top - something which is based on just lore is problematic) - I loved the movies, I like the books, but this really could be one hell of a flop.
