Mr. Eagles, you drunken baboon. The city of Carthage showed surprising valour and competence when it was besieged in the Third Punic War, in stark contrast to earlier contests that may have yielded different results had it not been for the antics of the Peace Party of Hanno.
So competent that they were wiped off the face of the earth.
Carthage merely turned into modern-day Tunis. After all, no one speaks Latin any more (except for Vatican City... and pretentious people...).
It's always ce was discarded by everyone.
As I understand it, Latin didn't perish so much as evolve and blend into its surroundings, after the Roman political entity disintegrated. It's where all the Romance family of languages came from.
Yep. I'm sure you're right, but still odd in my view.
Think of how other languages have evolved in the same time period. Old English to modern English is pretty much unrecognizable - we'd even have problems understanding someone speaking fluently in Middle English. Arabic was not standardized until relatively late on, and even so, most Arabs would not understand the language spoken in some of the Ithna'shar villages in Yemen's coastal mountain tops, which is recognized as barely evolved for about 1000 years.
Yes all good points and nobody else seems much surprised. I don't find it surprising that other languages have changed so much - they really had little linguistic capital invested. But for a language to have vanished that was the principal written language at the time seems odd.
There must have been a time when there were just a few families hanging on and insisting that the children spoke Latin.
Almost no one would have spoken the Latin we learn at school, outside of formal occasions, like debates in the Senate. It was very much a literary language. Most Italians would have spoken local languages like Samnian, Oscan, Greek (in Sicily and the South), or various Celtic tongues, further North, or Vulgar, a very rough, abbreviated form of Latin.
It's similar to Greek. The Greek we learn is the literary language of Athens in the Fifth Century. It is very different, for example to the Common tongue, which the New Testmant is written in.
And, no-one spoke like Dr. Johnson who famously said: "Well, I simply observed, sir, that I'm felicitous since during the course of the penultimate solar sojourn, I terminated my uninterrupted categorisation of the vocabulary of our post-Norman tongue."
Well, I don't know what you're talking about, but it sounds damn saucy, you lucky thing!
I really wish I hadn't looked at why Lee Hurst is trending.
It's not very funny... but it's not grossly offensive... just suggests that the individual is a normal young woman with all the rights and freedoms that entails
It seems he has had his twitter suspended for it...like really....its a poor joke and that's about it. Its hardly Bernard Manning doing some p##i joke.

"Hardly Bernard Manning" and " not grossly offensive"????
OK, come clean, which one of you is the Labour Party candidate for the forthcoming Hartlepool by-election?
I didn't see the original tweet so relying on kentonline (which always seems to do surprising well on my google searches).
As I understand it, he suggested that an 18-year old single woman is likely to (a) like sex and (b) prefer to use contraception rather than abstain or risk pregnancy. He then suggested that this preference would take precedent over her environmental beliefs.
I have no insight into the individual's preference, but I would assume that the above statements would be accurate if applied to the vast majority of 18 year old women.
I've heard many people joke that male Islamist teenagers, 4chan obsessed incels, and socially-awkward teenage female will all calm down once they discover the opposite sex.
Game over.....definitely now....its the hope that kills you.
Three four reckless shots.
Don’t know what happened to Roy but the fact is the other batsmen have thrown away their wickets.
Since I tuned in, annoyingly.
Its scoreboard pressure and the need for boundaries. The batsmen have no choice. England conceded about 50 more runs than they could afford. Its unfair to blame the batsmen for this.
Edit. Excellent bowling as well in fairness. Bhuvneshwar especially.
"As soon as Greta discovers cock, she'll stop complaining about the single use plastic it's wrapped in."
Anybody (i.e. several on here) who doesn't find that grossly offensive has no moral compass. This is a man in his 50s addressing a woman of 18. Without a named subject, it wouldn't be quite so bad - just juvenile. Try imagining it was directed at your own daughter? Misogynistic doesn't begin to describe it.
I really wish I hadn't looked at why Lee Hurst is trending.
Was it the single use plastic, nob joke that offended?
If so, did it offend because of the subject matter or because it was simply not remotely funny?
There's this meme some incels and other like to promulgate this belief/theory that all women need is 'cock' to make them better/less of a harridan.
The fact the subject of his ire is someone who has just turned 18 makes it creepy as it is unfunny and the fact that condoms are not made out of plastic.
Isn't that a very very ancient piece of misogny? "All the screeching woman needs is a husband"
I'm pretty sure that the theme crops up in plays from the ancient world, for example.
It is, but this newer misogyny has very aggressive overtones.
Go and find a nice man to love and marry is a little bit more benign than 'she needs some cock to make her a better person'
Yes - I was just thinking that if you are regurgitating 2.5K year old bigotry, you have no imagination. As well as being a bigot.
The fact he thinks condoms are made out of plastic makes me think he's an incel.

Bollocks. That’s a funny joke.
It’s not an old guy fantasising about a young woman, it’s a comment on how our priorities and relative values change as we mature into adulthood.
The EU has received 76 million doses of CV19 vaccines, of which 51 million have been used.
If they were jabbing as fast at they were arriving, they could have at least 70 million people with partial immunity - i.e. a little more than a fifth of the adult population.
Now, that would be miles behind the UK (51%!), but it would still be a lot better than their current level.
On topic, I think this year of locals is one worth staying up for - it will tell us a lot about the British political landscape post Brexit and, perhaps, whether Britain survives in its current form at all.

I must confess, I didn't take the time to analyse Lee Hurst's joke. Call me woke by all means, but on first reading I found it both unfunny and unpleasant.
Can someone explain to me how this can work? In all the associations etc I have been involved with, the access to the books is specified - i.e. people in role(s) X have access to everything in the Finance folder.

It's also a joke that goes to the heart of why getting private/individual action on issues like climate control, which are chronic and long-term issues where personal impact now is small, is so hard. We value that which benefits/costs us in the present, and that which is an acute need/pain much higher than that which is future and more diffuse.
Sex (acute, current) vs the planet (diffuse, future). It is a clever joke. Not necessarily funny, but I am sure if it were told in a club rather than on twitter, with some laughing, most of the rest would join in the laughter.

I've tried condoms on on several occasions over the years, you know, just to see how they, er, felt. In my younger days, I didn't quite get the knack of rolling it over my glans, triggering a premature "eruption". Very funny!

I imagine they would have to be doing it the old fashioned way and documents emailed/couriered so can be withheld. But to withhold from your Finance and Audit Committee? You’d have to know that wouldn’t pass without comment.
If true, there will now be professional questions for the FD to answer, and a general question about the fiduciary duty of the other directors. This sort of thing doesn’t end well.

It's a deliberately offensive joke and not hugely funny, perhaps worth a dark chuckle if in the mood, of course it is appalling. People who ply the trade of deliberately offensive humour will always fall afoul of crossing a line of what people will accept.
Getting offended by offense comics is a bit of wasted effort in my opinion.

There's a constituency on Twitter that simply don't like any jokes being made about Greta Thunberg, who they see as a 21st Century Joan of Arc. Spitting Image got it in the neck barely 6 months ago, and rightly ignored it:

It’s really not a joke aimed at the young woman personally, even though she is a public figure.
It’s a social commentary on how we (both individually and collectively) are prepared to sacrifice our lofty opinions once the reality of life intervenes.

It's crass and revolting. And not funny at all. However, the issue I have is, Twitter is home to a huge amount of worse material. It feels like this has been blown up because Greta Thunberg is one of those 'sacred cow' celebs who are too big to criticise. I hope that his suspension is a temporary one for that reason (though he may find as so many others have that being off Twitter enhances his life rather than the other).

But as he points out when your start to personalise jokes about other people you have to expect blowback.

I’ve seen Jimmy Carr a few times. One time I became very aware that I had a number of people around me not laughing at jokes about rape and abortion whilst I was struggling to breath. Very awkward.
That's why I love Jimmy Carr.
Makes you guilty for laughing.
But as he points out when your start to personalise jokes about other people you have to expect blowback.
That's why he's okay at making jokes about Katie Price but not Harvey Price.
He told a very shocking about Alan Carr but Alan Carr's a friend of his and he gives back equally.
Bollocks. That’s a funny joke.
It’s not an old guy fantasising about a young woman, it’s a comment on how our priorities and relative values change as we mature.
Bollocks to you too. The idea that "maturing" means "discovering cock" is just pathetic.
My wife thinks it’s funny too. Jokes are supposed to challenge our thinking and push boundaries. I stand by saying it’s a good joke.
I'm speechless. That joke "challenged our thinking and pushed boundaries"?? Unlike your wife, mine didn't like it at all - can't tell you what she thought should be done to Lee Hurst.
Maybe I’ve been watching too much edgy comedy in the past year, but it’s really not a joke aimed at the person mentioned in it.

It’s not an old guy fantasising about a young woman, it’s a comment on how our priorities and relative values change as we mature into adulthood.
It's also a joke that goes to the heart of why getting private/individual action on issues like climate control, which are chronic and long-term issues where personal impact now is small, is so hard. We value that which benefits/costs us in the present, and that which is an acute need/pain much higher than that which is future and more diffuse.

It's all a matter of personal taste.
I tried Jimmy Carr (live) but found his jokes to be at the level of a 15-year old boy in a school dorm - even more crass and crude than "locker-room" humour.
I couldn't engage with Russell Howard either, who is like a 19-year old first-year student who never grew up.
I've tried condoms on on several occasions over the years, you know, just to see how they, er, felt. In my younger days, I didn't quite get the knack of rolling it over my glans, triggering a premature "eruption". Very funny!
You're supposed to get someone else to do it for you.
I used to go to Lee Hurst's comedy club in Bethnal Green / Mile End. He'd start by saying "if the fire alarm goes, I'd be very surprised, because we don't have one."

There's a constituency on Twitter that simply don't like any jokes being made about Greta Thunberg, who they see as a 21st Century Joan of Arc. Spitting Image got it in the neck barely 6 months ago, and rightly ignored it:
Yes, some think jokes or attacks of her are out of order because she is young, but she has made herself into a major face of a political issue of our times, and regularly takes world leaders to task. She is a fair target for humour or attack, as much as any figure.
Now that is not quite the same as Hurst's very crude joke, but I'd maintain that getting too offended by someone trying to be offensive is a waste of effort - such action as may be appropriate has happened, so better to move on than pontificate on the existence dark or offensive humour. Some on here have objected to gallows humour on a similar basis, some attempts at humour will not be funny and will be offensive, that's life. Condemn by all means, but offensive humour is not going anywhere.
I really wish I hadn't looked at why Lee Hurst is trending.

I’m fine with Hurst’s joke, other than it should say rubber not plastic. Personally I think it plays on human nature or perception. I doubt anyone seriously thinks Greta’s going to suddenly stop her campaigning.

Albeit you are both much funnier and more intelligent.

It's funny, but lots of my friends say my sense of humour is a lot like Jimmy Carr's humour.
I'd just like to lay off the EU (as an entity) for the moment, and lay into the individual member states.
To my mind they've made three appalling, and entirely avoidable, mistakes.
(1) Most are holding supplied back for second doses. This makes literally no sense. In the (unlikely) event supply went to zero, your country would still be in a much better position having 100 half vaccinated, rather than 50 waiting vaccinated and waiting on their second dose.
(2) All are following manufacturer guidelines rather than maximising first doses. Now, I can understand why you would want to choose to get an 78 year old diabetic their second dose before a fit 23 year old. But the diminution in cases, hospitalisations and transmission is surely much better by maximising first doses.
(3) Most also feel that they need to placate anti-vaxxers. Not a single CV19 vaccine has a positive net approval in France. And while AZ is the worse, Moderna, J&J and Pfizer are all underwater too. Utter insanity. Me? If you miss your place in the vaccince queue, we give it to someone who does want the vaccine. Fuck refuseniks and get jabs in arms. The more people protected, the better.
There's a bit of a gap between delivery and use, but in general it's not huge- days not weeks. Could do better, but not game-changingly so.
And as for the other points- it's much easier to go off-label, or say take it or leave it if you have the NHS as a national religion, and you don't have a significant anti-vax vibe in the population. They are bad steps, but at least a bit understandable.
(And whilst the UK is definitely ahead of the EU, the gap is smaller than some on here seem to think. As someone here wrote in a very sage header.)

Okay, one last try.
Of course there's nothing wrong in making jokes about, or taking the piss out of, Greta Thunberg; she is a rich source of humour.
What's wrong with this particular joke is the male arrogance that says "well, once she discovers what our male 'members' do for her she'll soon lose interest in this environmental wokery".
It's sexist, misogynistic crap, that's all. Something that there's a fair bit of on this male-dominated (but still lovable) forum.

It's also why I have a degree of sympathy for the justin's of the world, not particularly pleased with certain social changes over the last number of decades - on some issues things have changed quickly, quite often for the better on things like gay issues for example, and some perhaps more tone deaf or offensive comedic things from just 10-20 years ago might not pass muster today, which is fine.
But sometimes you get high profile figures who have been around for absolutely ages reacting hypersensitively to people moving just a little bit slower on such issues that are now a bit outdated, and reacting as if it is completely beyond the pale, often without even acknowledging that in most cases they and others said or enjoyed the very same things. All very well us having learned and moved on, but you need to acknowledge it a bit, not just condemn people a few steps behind you on the progession of these things as if they are the worst type of bigots.

The problem with Justin is he has double standards. He gets very het up over Truss and Johnson shagging around, but is very relaxed about the fact Corbyn and Wilson were equally philanderers. Indeed, he stubbornly refuses to believe either of them are/were.
That suggests it’s not the morality but the politics.

Bollocks. That’s a funny joke.
It’s not an old guy fantasising about a young woman, it’s a comment on how our priorities and relative values change as we mature into adulthood.
There's a constituency on Twitter that simply don't like any jokes being made about Greta Thunberg, who they see as a 21st Century Joan of Arc. Spitting Image got it in the neck barely 6 months ago, and rightly ignored it:
Indeed. It is precisely because it is a joke about short-term desires versus the long-term good of the planet that requires this joke to be about Greta, not some unnamed, generic teen do-gooder.
But I take it as a joke on the perception rather than anything about young women.
"As soon as Greta discovers cock, she'll stop complaining about the single use plastic it's wrapped in."

People laugh at things in comedy clubs that they'd get very offended by on Twitter.
I did say 'a degree' of sympathy for a reason, it's a spectrum, and also the amount of time plays a part.

I’ve seen Jimmy Carr a few times. One time I became very aware that I had a number of people around me not laughing at jokes about rape and abortion whilst I was struggling to breath. Very awkward.
If you pay for a ticket to see Jimmy Carr, you should know by now exactly what to expect.
He's OK on the late night version of Countdown, quite possibly the least "weird" person on there, excluding Susie and Rachael.
The late-night Countdown, which grew out of one of the charity telethon programmes, is one of the best things on network TV.
There will be plenty of students who watch both that and the regular Countdown, and the after-dark version shows Rachel and Susie in a very different, positive, light.
Late night Countdown is a thing? Well that's my somethhing learned for the day.
I really wish I hadn't looked at why Lee Hurst is trending.
It's not very funny... but it's not grossly offensive... just suggests that the individual is a normal young woman with all the rights and freedoms that entails

I must confess, I didn't take the time to analyse Lee Hurst's joke. Call me woke by all means, but on first reading I found it both unfunny and unpleasant.
Oh, don't get me wrong. It is both totally unfunny and deeply unpleasant.
However, I strongly believe that people have the right to be unfunny and offensive. The "correct" response would be to unfollow him and not buy his DVDs (if that is still a thing). It's not to complain to Twitter and try to get him banned.

The level of discourse seems to have regressed somewhat from a psychopathic male killer of a woman also makes victims of decent men, and that was a pretty shit one in the first place.

I had not heard that of Corbyn though.
Why not? Because, realistically, few people are interested. There are reasons why all of his marriages collapsed (except the present one) but as he was only briefly more than a minor figure, nobody cared much.
Now, I don’t approve of people sleeping around either, if I’m totally honest, but in the case of all of those it’s secondary to the fact that their policies were a crock of utter shite. Similarly, had I both been able to vote in 1992 and known about Edwina Currie, I would still have voted for Major ahead of the uxorious Mr Kinnock.
OK, so I wrote this a couple of weeks back, but anyhow:
Due to having fessed up to suffering from excessive boredom during Lockdown, PB's resident flint-knapper @Leon was commissioned by CCHQ to knap the perfect sculpture of Boris Johnson! Finally able to take a break from knapping strangely shaped sex-toys, he accepted the work in a heatbeat, and got to sculpting the same day. Arduous work, but he felt that, over the course of several weeks of almost continuous knapping, that he got it almost completely spot on with a just little bit more required.
However, @Leon had found that he had knapped so meticulously that his hands were thoroughly knackered and sore. He wondered about taking some time off in order to finish off his masterpiece at a later date. Boris's office phoned him back reasonably promptly, but to @Leon's horror, he was told in no uncertain terms that he would lose his fee if he stopped work!
WRT jokes, there are some that I do find extremely funny, but at the same time, feel guilty at laughing at them. With the best will in the world, there are racist/misogynistic/homophobic jokes that are hilarious, even though many are not.
However, I strongly believe that people have the right to be unfunny and offensive. The "correct" response would be to unfollow him and not buy his DVDs (if that is still a thing). It's not to complain to Twitter and try to get him banned.
I'd just like to make one last quick comment on the Greta joke.
If a fifty year old man came up to me, and said in a letchy way, "I can't wait until your daughter discovers cock", I'd be utterly horrified.
People on Twitter are reading the Lee Hurst joke in the same tone as that letchy fifty year old. They're not hearing the joke in context of him riffing in the way described by @TimT below.
This is a comedy club joke. I've laughed at things that were thoroughly offensive in comedy clubs. And you know what, they were funny in context. And that's OK.
If Lee Hurst was oogling Greta (and come to mention it, they do look somewhat alike), then it would highly offensive. But he wasn't. He was making a joke about how young people - when sex is involved - suddenly lose the long-term planning part of their brain.
I really wish I hadn't looked at why Lee Hurst is trending.
It's not very funny... but it's not grossly offensive... just suggests that the individual is a normal young woman with all the rights and freedoms that entails

I can accept a general feeling that if someone is a sh*t in one aspect of their life they may be a sh*t in others, but I think someone being a good MP or Minister is probably not one of those affected by whether they are a sh*t, so I am not concerned unless they are egregiously sh*tty. After all, Charles I set a high bar.

If they were jabbing as fast at they were arriving, they could have at least 70 million people with partial immunity - i.e. a little more than a fifth of the adult population.
Now, that would be miles behind the UK (51%!), but it would still be a lot better than their current level.
The idea that one person can just say "No, you can't see the books"???
I'd also point out that being a hack anti-vaxxer has led to Dr Andrew Wakefield punching above his weight, partner-wise.
Maybe Macron's on to something.

Sex (acute, current) vs the planet (diffuse, future). It is a clever joke. Not necessarily funny, but I am sure if it were told in a club rather than on twitter, with some laughing, most of the rest would join in the laughter.
If true, there will now be professional questions for the FD to answer, and a general question about the fiduciary duty of the other directors. This sort of thing doesn’t end well.
Getting offended by offense comics is a bit of wasted effort in my opinion.

It’s a social commentary on how we (both individually and collectively) are prepared to sacrifice our lofty opinions once the reality of life intervenes.
And have no Plan B.
Mind blown...
I tried Jimmy Carr (live) but found his jokes to be at the level of a 15-year old boy in a school dorm - even more crass and crude than "locker-room" humour.
I couldn't engage with Russell Howard either, who is like a 19-year old first-year student who never grew up.
Like a gentleman being dressed by his valet.
Thanks x

Albeit you are both much funnier and more intelligent.
It's funny, but lots of my friends say my sense of humour is a lot like Jimmy Carr's humour.
Look at the graph from the French data set:

There's a bit of a gap between delivery and use, but in general it's not huge- days not weeks. Could do better, but not game-changingly so.
And as for the other points- it's much easier to go off-label, or say take it or leave it if you have the NHS as a national religion, and you don't have a significant anti-vax vibe in the population. They are bad steps, but at least a bit understandable.
(And whilst the UK is definitely ahead of the EU, the gap is smaller than some on here seem to think. As someone here wrote in a very sage header.)
England run ragged now.
Edit. Thankfully not.
That suggests it’s not the morality but the politics.
I had not heard that of Corbyn though.
Would you take any of these England players on the Lions tour? Itoje maybe? But even he gives away too many penalties

However, I strongly believe that people have the right to be unfunny and offensive. The "correct" response would be to unfollow him and not buy his DVDs (if that is still a thing). It's not to complain to Twitter and try to get him banned.
"Why?" asked @Leon on the phone incredulously.
"Simple!" Boris's underling replied. "You're not entitled to any..." He paused for effect. "...Statue-Tory Sick Pay!"
I thank you!
