The BMA said its new guidance had been prepared for doctors who will need to make "grave decisions" about who should receive "scarce lifesaving resources" if the country's health system is overwhelmed by coronavirus cases.
"As such, some of the most unwell patients may be denied access to treatment such as intensive care or artificial ventilation," the BMA's ethics guidance note states.
"This will inevitably be indirectly discriminatory against both the elderly and those with long-term health conditions, with the latter being denied access to life-saving treatment as a result of their pre-existing health problems."
It says imposing an age cut-off would be illegal, but adds that older patients with pre-existing respiratory problems would have a "very high chance of dying despite intensive care," and are therefore lower priority for admission.
Many LibDems voted for Swinson because they felt the party absolutely had to break its duck of female leaders, and it is interesting that the same consideration hasn’t weighed as heavily on Labour members. Perhaps Swinson’s crashing and burning helped them consider who would actually be best for the job?
It is weird though that if Starmer wins there will never have been a Labour full leadership election where a woman has finished ahead of a man. Every man in the race has always got more votes than any woman.
Lisa Nandy will be the next leader after Kier.....
Thus becoming the second permanent Labour leader after RLB...
Whatever happens the uproar in Labour will continue. My gentle baiting of mates about RLB has them openly admitting they will quit the instant she is declared to have "won". Alternately Starmer wins, is still reliant on a Labour machine which has been rebuilt in Corbyn's image and has to make Burgon shadow Chancellor.
All the talk from Starmer about "unity" concerns me.
If Starmer is to be taken seriously step one should be sacking Burgon and Long Bailey etc in his first reshuffle. Johnson sacked Hunt, there is no reason why Starmer shouldn't sack Long Bailey.
Talk of unity should be confused with a desire for unity. It is expected is all.
What Starmer wants I could not speculate, and it may be he tries to walk a silly middle road. But perhaps not.

I wasn't being grumpy....I was being mischievous....
our daily walk is like playing life size pac man....avoiding joggers, remembering not to scratch your nose, you need eyes in the back of your head...
A friend of mine with a somewhat mischievous sense of humour suggesting creeping up behind, well let's say novice joggers who are now infecting the posher part of Edinburgh and coughing. He claimed that the absolute reduction on the demands on the NHS could be considerable.
Doesn’t that count as assault?
Probably more a breach of the peace, causing fear and alarm.
Jeez, I have a telephone interview with the managing partner of a local law firm this afternoon, after a cold-approach by email this morning. Wish me luck!
Very best of luck. Are you good to go or do you have exams to finish yet? If so what are the Universities doing about that?
I still have exams to do in May, and they’re now “e-exams” which are basically just the same exams, but now open-book, and need to be done within 24 hours.
Yeah, I don’t get it either.
My niece is doing her maths exam like that. She is somewhat doubtful that all of her friends will actually be doing it themselves...

Indeed yes. It’s clear that something doesn’t add up there.
The chairman of the World Medical Association has said that China's figures on the new coronavirus infections aren't credible, Associated Press reports.
But he added that the numbers aren't credible in many other countries, either.
Dr Frank Ulrich Montgomery said the recent low Chinese numbers were "nonsense" and suggested Beijing was intentionally providing false figures. Other countries are also working with uncertain figures because better data often isn't available, he added.
Dr Montgomery cited the lack of proper testing as a major reason explaining why many developing countries are reporting low infection rates.
He called for the World Health Organization to do more to impress on governments in poorer nations the need to take measures to restrict the spread of the pandemic. If the virus takes hold in megacities such as Cairo, "then it's going to get really dangerous," Dr Montgomery warned.
Paging Tyson......
it was the tens off thousands, possibly hundred of thousands that have died that I thought was fake news....and didn't compute with the Chinese doctors journals findings, and China sending out materials (and doctors) to Europe....
Do you think the Chinese government cares more about its citizens or its image on the international stage?
The latter of course. Frankly, the citizens probably care less about the citizens than the image too. It's a very prestige conscious society from what I can gather.
Many places are, see the worry about other countries 'laughing' at others that some people feel very strongly.
FPT My good lady wife has now been out allegedly at Tesco's for more than an hour.
Do I assume:
(a) that there is a very long queue to get into the shop; (b) that she is indulging in a wild affair in breach of her social distancing obligations? (c) that she was involved in a fight to the death for the last piece of dried pasta and, very uncharacteristically, lost? (d) all of the above?
She has returned and is adamant that it was (a). Right...
Be original David.
There was a long queue to get into the shop, so to jump it she indulged in a wild affair with the manager to get moved to the front. Once there, there was a wild fight to the death over the last packet of pasta which she won, but she then had to wash the blood off the pasta she’d clubbed the other person to death with so it would scan.
Does that work?
it is easy to kill people with pasta. The penne is mightier than the sword.

Your example answers your question. The press just turned but for the last few weeks Hunt was basically the entirety of the opposition to the government.
I wonder if those who got so carried away by using the previous couple of results to lament the growth rate of deaths will immediately jump onto a plateau/peak bandwagon, only to shriek calamity if the numbers rise again (which they probably will).

Oh sure. Problem is that the Stalinists still run the NEC. Run HQ. Have the General Secretary. Have gutted the regional officers of sane staff. Faces absolute lunatics elected to run CLPs. None of these people going away - and "the majority voted for the other guy" won't cut it, they'll claim to be right and intensify their lunacy.
Good example - my local BLP is now run by crazies. Having converted Labour across the polling sheet voters to turn out en masse voting Tory, their solution is for the BLP Secretary to email members berating "wannabe Tories" asking members to buy copies of the "Socialist Appeal" newspaper, which is described as the "Marxist voice of Labour and youth".
In my day running the BLP we doubled the number of councillors and took the seat at the general election. Now they have lost the councillors the MP and have turned into a shit version of Jehovah's Witnesses. They aren't about to sod off even if Starmer wins.
This morning it was announced that New York City's hospitals are at capacity. Emergency Medical Services crews have been told that if they attend a person having a heart attack, if they cannot revive them in situ they are to declare the patient dead. They are not to transport them to hospital.
But yeah the doctors and nurses are clearly pilfering supplies during their copious downtime.

The info is appreciated but I do think Tyson is right to the extent that we should all behave as if every surface we touch is contaminated and act accordingly. How many shopping trolley handles are unused for even 1 day let alone 9?
At our supermercado they wipe the trolley handle as you enter the shop - you also must wear mask , gloves and apply the sterile gel. As you leave the counters are wiped after each customer. All happens in a wonderfully cheerful manner - the sense we're all in it together is really quite profound.

Indeed they need to be purged. And it should be started with purging the Cabinet.

Gotta keep the punters alive so they can continue smoking.

Percentage of tests being positive still going up. Be good to see when that percentage starts to go back down.
It actually went down a little bit, from 44% to 42%.
Oh thanks. That's a good sign then! Hopefully its peaked.
To be honest, I was preparing myself for much worse today. I still expect the numbers will increase a bit before the weekend but at that point (and assuming we track Spain and Italy - and I don't really see a strong reason why we shouldn't) the number of daily fatalities will remain fairly consistent for a week or 10 days as new cases coming into the hospital plateau.

Pretty much the same. Still a bit early for the peak I fear.

Same here, also had a guard pointing a laser thermometer at everyone on the way in today. Is this not happening in the UK?
Per the BBC: A further 50 people have died with coronavirus, taking the total to 126, she [Sturgeon] says. However, only 10 of these are on top of yesterday while 40 were not reported before because of "a delay in family liaison".
If the govt went out and did 100k random tests tomorrow and 95% came back negative, wouldn't that be a waste of time/resources?
Given the 40%+ positive figures, it appears that testing is being done only on suspected cases. Which makes more sense to me.
I can't see the point in testing millions of people who've been stuck at home for a fortnight (NHS workers aside) knowing that when they emerge back outdoors they are going to get it anyway.
Surely the only positive thing a govt can do is play for time to help the NHS. They are resigned to the fact 80%+ of us will get the illness and are doing this lockdown to try to stagger it. Testing won't stop people getting it.
I suppose unimportant in the great scheme of things but sad to see the last safe havens have been breached. Cases now identified in both the Outer Hebrides and Orkneys.
'How many more royals and celebrities were infected at Cheltenham? Organisers are under fire after Andrew Parker Bowles, comic Lee Mack and footballer Charlie Austin catch virus after mixing with 60,000-strong crowd"
How many people in the boxes and enclosures at Cheltenham had been skiing in Italy the week before, that is the question?
Surely the question should be "Why was such an event allowed to take place given what we knew at the time?"
Really glad to se you back Bev. There were a few concerned comments the last few days.
I am still not right in the head. It has been 6 or 7 years since it hit this hard and I am usually aware of the build-up to an onset and take steps early on. The lockdown is playing havoc with that.
Thank you for the concern and kind words - they are appreciated
Also, if the capacity is 13,000 in England at present, ~1,000 in Wales and ~1,000 in Scotland that gives (assuming ~500 per day in Northern Ireland) >15K tests across the whole UK at present being the overall capacity.
If the govt went out and did 100k random tests tomorrow and 95% came back negative, wouldn't that be a waste of time/resources?
Given the 40%+ positive figures, it appears that testing is being done only on suspected cases. Which makes more sense to me.

If those 100,000 tests were of key workers who are stuck in isolation because it is suspected they have the virus or a family member has it then yes I think it would be of very great value to have them done.
The Head of the English NHS Trusts was on the radio yesterday and said that they had been testing key workers who were stuck at home under 14 day quarantine and found that only 15% of them had the virus. That could make a big difference to workloads on the front line.
I dont know if this is just coincidence but around 20% of the people on the Diamond Princess tested positive and out of the tests the the UK have done around 20% of people have also tested positive
NEC elections are also coming up, they could also show a swing to moderates
There also quite a few batshit crazy MPs who got in last time.
I was trying to think of a pasta pun to follow that up, but it’s not easy, give me a minute Orzo.
It is a farfale better thing I do today...
Very good, but let’s give it up. We don’t want it Linguine.
It is for this reason that a harsher lockdown is required if we are not to have an elongated peak. Short term pain, long term gain - I'm afraid that far too many people have little self control.

I looked at the stats for local councils the other day, and Shetland had the highest cases per capita in the UK. Not sure if that's still true,
The chairman of the World Medical Association has said that China's figures on the new coronavirus infections aren't credible, Associated Press reports.
Never let it be said that the PB crazies will waste an opportunity for rampant bigotry.
If only there were a virus that targeted stupidity!

Not immediately. But if they can get the antibody tests going and find that a substantial proportion of the population has already had the virus then at that point testing people currently in isolation might mean at least some will be able to ease their restrictions - perhaps not going out as that would confuse matters and make policing it all more difficult but at least receive visitors and helpers without fear of contacting the disease.
It is for this reason that a harsher lockdown is required if we are not to have an elongated peak. Short term pain, long term gain - I'm afraid that far too many people have little self control.
Liking the term 'covidiots' anyway.
Without even reading Der Sturmer...
Is that actually a quarter of people broke the rules once, possibly by mistake/they forgot/had a reason, and they are not actually Peter Hitchens?

Unfortunately not. They got the virus a good while ago. Before either Orkneys or Hebrides. And as was mentioned below because they have such a small population the 'cases per million people' number is wildly high.

Yeah agree 100% with that. The antibody test sounds like the one which will change the landscape dramatically.
I can't see a great deal of point in the standard virus test when you could test negative at 3pm and go out and contract the virus at 4pm!

I think the argument can be made that there is some value in random testing to get a clearer picture on community transmission. The counterargument will be that you don't want to invest too much testing capacity for that.
I aleady posted yesterday that our authorities are taking the approach of limited, local random testing as a sort of compromise. They chose Gangelt, a small municipality close to Heinsberg, one of our early clusters. Out of a population of 12,000 they selected 1,000 as a representative sample, invited them for a test to find out the pattern of community transmission. Other, similar local test schemes are being prepared. I think this approach may deliver some useful insights.
Comments
What Starmer wants I could not speculate, and it may be he tries to walk a silly middle road. But perhaps not.

Long Bailey should be the entirety of the opposition to the opposition.
10215 tested, 10657 tests.

But yeah the doctors and nurses are clearly pilfering supplies during their copious downtime.
(Incidentally, I don’t think that’s necessarily true. It depends on how it’s done. But I couldn’t resist a chance to pun about sumthing.)
We will see how serious Starmer is when he does his first reshuffle. If he keeps Long Bailey in the cabinet then he will be lucky to be a poundshop Neil Kinnock.
When to the second will the lockdown end?
When to the second will we be at 25k tests?
