It was like that around here. I was moved. Quite tearful actually. I was thinking of Foxy and Tyson's relations and hundred of thousands of others who must be terrified of the danger but nevertheless provide essential care.
One of my nephews (a doctor) is really ill today....my sister is saying he can barely reply to texts (he's isolated in a bedroom in their house) after becoming unwell overnight.......fever, aches, and cough...
My other nephew...(a doctor)...after a 12 hour shifts on a Covid ward yesterday was told he would have to launder his own scrubs..he was so tired he left them in his car, so tomorrow he goes back in wearing dirty overalls.....
None of them have PPE gear....my nephew on a Covid ward says he tries to avoid the patients when they cough at him....
My anger on this is shocking....I hope Floater emerges from his cesspit tonight so I can metaphorically ring his scrawny neck
Is this a hospital in England ?
Yes...on the south coast
My wife works as a nurse in Winchester hospital RHCH, she has just come in from a 12 hour shift, I read your post to her, she is staggered. They are not allowed anywhere near a Covid patient ward without full PPE and must wear paper scrubs. As soon as they leave the ward the scrubs are taken off and thrown away. There do not have a PPE shortage. It’s unreal that a NHS hospital could allow doctors near Covid patients unprotected.
My nephew is one of two doctors on a Covid ward...they have paper aprons, gloves and paper masks...no eye protection,. nothing for their hair...yesterday he had to bring his scrubs back home to launder after a 12 hr shift
No one wears eye protection...he won't because no one else has it...
I am slightly concerned that your post is fake news to counteract people who come on here with what is actually happening.....
It's possible PPE supply situation is different across the country.
That seemed to be the explanation offered in today's Downing St press conference, 'localised supply chain issues' apparently.
Across the world health care workers are falling like flies, it is not just inadequate PPE, it is people getting infected despite recommended PPE.
We really need decent testing, recovered staff are the safest. I hope to join them.

I mean it's anecdote vs. anecdote at this point.

I got quite short of breath just eating my dinner. No fever, but marked cough now. It was quite scary. Still OK on 02 sats, and it has faded quite a bit.
I am no longer thinking that I have Coronachondria. This seems the real thing.
Stay indoors people, it is going to be a rough ride.

Good to see Gideon posting again - it still sounds bad but I gather the worst phase only lasts a few days as a rule, so with luck it will start to ease soon. Good luck, Foxy - hope it's as mild as possible.

My wife has worked at Winchester since 2004, my daughter is a recently qualified nurse working at Bournemouth hospital, having completed her Adult nursing degree in Summer 2019. My wife’s specialism is colorectal but the hospital is changing the wards in preparation for an influx of patients, so next week she may be working on ICU. I know my comments don’t go down well on here but I have my opinion, a lot of it based on what she tells me. Unfortunately I get accustomed to her telling me about patients dying, having crashes etc.
It was like that around here. I was moved. Quite tearful actually. I was thinking of Foxy and Tyson's relations and hundred of thousands of others who must be terrified of the danger but nevertheless provide essential care.

There are helicopters flying on a fairly regular basis over my house in last two or three days. They are delivering PPE supplies to an army distribution centre, according to local sources.
April/May seems a bit early for schools to be back, politically let alone any other reason. Gods willing the peak will have passed and things will have eased a bit, but I doubt there'll be a rush to get things back to normal lest it happen too soon.
The economy is going down the plug hole for 5000 boomers who didn’t have many runs left in their season.
Err no. I'm not a boomer. I'm 34. My wife is 33. We are both distraught. You know nothing I'm afraid.
It was a dreadful 'Trump' style comment
I really hope you both move pass this distressing stage quickly and make a full recovery
All the best
Cheers Big G. It has been the most dreadful week of my life and unfortunately I believe I am currently in the eye of the storm.
I really do admire how you are able to post your progress and feelings and it gives those of us in the high risk group an idea of just how serious it could be
Hadn't seen that Clap for carers think, but 15 minits ago I here a lot of noise outside my window, and thought to myself 'what are they doing - ignoring the isolation' now it makes sence.
TSE has been giving nurses the clap?
Fake news.
That said I did ask my girlfriend to wear a nurse's outfit the other day, just so we could get served quicker in Sainsbury's.
Was that the only reason?
I gathered the impression that on other occasions it might be TSE donning the 'nurse outfit'. Am I wrong?
"It was just a brief moment in the daily press briefing, but England's deputy chief medical officer Dr Jenny Harries did offer some positive news. She said the coronavirus outbreak was “starting to move in the right direction”.
Other countries which have been on a steep curve have seen the number of new cases rise by a third every day. But the UK trajectory is nowhere near that steep.
Five days ago 1,000 new cases were reported. Today 2,000 were. That may seem alarming, but if we had been on a steep upwards path today’s figures would have been twice as high."

Not sure if this has already been mentioned on here but in contrast to that w***er at Weatherspoons, Aldi are giving all their staff a 10% bonus as thanks for all their hard work at the moment. Another shop I will be happy to support when this is all over.
We really need to maintain and publicise the list of companies who put profit before decency.
I'm not sure comparing a company that has been compulsorily shut down with a company that is enjoying a boom in panic shopping is a fair contest??
Both have taken actions they did not need to take.
In one case they have decided to hang 40,000 employees out to dry. In the other they have decided to have their employees share in their good fortune. I know which one will be getting my custom in future and which will not.
"I think it would be helpful if I cleared up some confusion that has emerged in recent days. Some have interpreted my evidence to a UK parliamentary committee as indicating we have substantially revised our assessments of the potential mortality impact of COVID-19. This is not the case. Indeed, if anything, our latest estimates suggest that the virus is slightly more transmissible than we previously thought. Our lethality estimates remain unchanged. My evidence to Parliament referred to the deaths we assess might occur in the UK in the presence of the very intensive social distancing and other public health interventions now in place. Without those controls, our assessment remains that the UK would see the scale of deaths reported in our study (namely, up to approximately 500 thousand)."

Some people might find it odd but I find it's more comforting reading the news here rather than getting it direct from source... in the evening I have a lot of time to try and keep my mind focused.

Yip - makes sense. Suppression is needed to buy us time.
I hope that London is able to cope but am worried - medic friends there corroborate @tyson and say that hospitals are already getting very full. Strangely, outside London, other medic friends / colleagues say it is still pretty quiet. My local hospital - a large Trust - has on the order of low tens of patients at present and the rush is yet to materialise (colleagues are surgeons with respiratory expertise so well in the loop). Of course cases will accumulate, but the social distancing that has been put in place may well be sufficient to prevent too much damage - but London has the potential to be very different unfortunately.

Yes, there are a lot of morons on twitter who are saying: "If only 5,700 people are going to die, why do we have a lockdown?"

I can't believe at todays press conference, after screaming at the government to lock down earlier, one of the journalists then asked but isn't this lockdown really bad for people's health, isn't it a huge negative thing and should we really be doing it for this long...
Its like the government never said errrh we don't want to lock people down for months on end as it is really bad for people, and they won't stick to it....so we want to time it.
The sleep deprived high stressed minister / egg-heads must want to ram that lectern straight through the video conferencing screen.

It's not 'unfortunately Andrew Neil finds himself within that group', Andrew Neil chooses to be in that group.

Boys will be boys, and journaists will be numpties.
If we do get away with 5000 deaths, there is going to be a whole load of attention seeking idiots claiming all this lockdown stuff was a waste of time and we shouldn't listen to these experts as they clearly don't know what they are talking about.

Yes you are correct. He's been told in the replies to his tweets so it must either be wilful ignorance or fear masquerading within a displacement activity.

But we'll be able to point to America to show what 'bad' looks like.

Good point. NYC alone is already an absolute disaster zone. Video I linked earlier, refrigerated trailer has been hired to store the shear amount of bodies at one hospital.

The lobby fodder are good at the he said she said stuff. Understanding basic stuff to do with causality or science is beyond most of them.
As an example, see the tweet today from the Sun political editor Newton-Dunn? Apparently those countries which lock down have the worst death rates so we shouldn't do it. I mean, where do you start with that level of thinking?

And I am sure he will be very happy for the government to track every single movement of his mobile phone, every time he spends any money, uses public transport etc i.e. the South Korea model of contact tracing.

I have a Korean co-worker and she describes their linked databases on every facet of life as truly Orwellian. Ace for contact tracing but something British people would never accept.

It'll be a good test; for once we've actually looked into the abyss rather than titillated ourselves with a media led storm in a teacup.
We have balls of steel in this country. This proves it.
Just watched it again after the heads up on here.
It really is fascinating to watch it after the last few weeks. All the things you miss in the film when you watch it with no experience of a pandemic - like them using the term social distancing as an important factor in limiting the spread of the disease and terms we have become used to like R0.
Watching it from the new perspective of Covid-19 reinforces what a well made film it is.

I would question whether they are even good at the "he said she said stuff", we tend to assume they are in the know, but we have no easy means of verifying it, and they could easily be as error prone there as well.
On the whole the reporting of the coronavirus has been bad across the board. Basic facts that anybody can check by downloading the reports that journalists are meant to be writing about*, or Googling something from the ONS, is being repeatedly misreported because it makes a "good" story. And God help you if you are foolish enough to read any of the opinion pieces, it's wall-to-wall nonsense.
* There were reports last Thursday that anybody could have read about on the Monday from the Imperial College report. It seemed to take three days to get some of the details into the media.
I now get why censorship during wartime occurs, so I've learnt something at least.
Still in medical isolation in prison, Harvey Weinstein has not exhibited any signs of severe illness, despite having tested positive for the coronavirus earlier this week.
I see even in these dark times PB is keeping standards up by discussing F+N wine selections
What do you mean 'even'? It's precisely in these dark times that you most need decent wines. (Since you ask, Pol Roger last night, just the non-vintage. I thought about the R de Ruinart, which would have been appropriate as we usually have it at the Royal Opera House, and we were sitting down to watch the free stream of the Met's Die Walküre, but decided the occasion wasn't quite special enough for the Ruinart.)
Hang on, why did no one mention free streams from the Met? How did you get it and are there any more?
They are available for 23 hours from 7.30pm New York time, i.e. 11.30pm our time, which means you can watch them here the next evening. As far as I can tell they don't cut you off if you are still watching at 10.30pm our time.
So, Siegfried tonight if you want!
Other opera houses are doing similar streams. Also see here, there's a free 30-day subscription available:

But that report had long words and mathsy stuff in...very difficult...Sky News "upping the ante" on the FT story on the Oxford paper and going with 66% may have already had it was a classic.

I assume you are just trolling. It might have something to do with a lockdown versus no lockdown.
Why would I be trolling? I’m always interested in not swallowing what we are told we should be thinking without having a look at the other side of the argument

So if you posted a tweet implying the earth is flat you are either trolling or something worse.
I don't see much evidence of critical thought. I just see brain worms from Peter Hitchens.

Interactive graph of infection vs social distancing
I hope that London is able to cope but am worried - medic friends there corroborate @tyson and say that hospitals are already getting very full. Strangely, outside London, other medic friends / colleagues say it is still pretty quiet. My local hospital - a large Trust - has on the order of low tens of patients at present and the rush is yet to materialise (colleagues are surgeons with respiratory expertise so well in the loop). Of course cases will accumulate, but the social distancing that has been put in place may well be sufficient to prevent too much damage - but London has the potential to be very different unfortunately.

Not as nice as getting together face to face but strangely do-able. And better than no meeting at all.

Nobody like my suggestion of Station Eleven for some reason.
