Those US numbers are very scary.

To make a betting point (yes yes I know and it is the point of this site) I wonder if Trump truly is real value to lay now. He's still close to evens.

What I can't work out is whether he'd benefit from a rally round the flag effect and do whatever it takes (including quasi socialist measures) over the next 6 months to win.

I think he might because winning is all that matters to him.

As our friend Mr Smithson (Jr) keeps pointing out, Trump was already running a more than quasi-socialist spending policy. Increasing taxes in the next six months would harm rather than help him, and any changes to healthcare provision wouldn't be noticed in time. I'm curious as to what else you might have had in mind?

In any event, I think so many people in the US are going to die in that period that it simply wouldn't make any difference what Trump tries. The only question for me is whether the deaths will be sufficiently spread out to finish him off - swing voters in Wisconsin probably aren't that interested in health crises in New York and California.
Income protection and state subsidies. He could socialise healthcare too. He could use emergency powers.

My trouble is that those arguing against Trump are always very obvious with their own feelings about him, so I take their betting tips with a pinch of salt.

What I really need is someone who respects him or likes his skills as a politician to also argue to me why he'll lose.

Any confirmation that all McDonalds are closing? Not seeing that news elsewhere.

Hopefully we won't just have a lot less pollution, but perhaps a lot less fatties in a few months after they have had to go cold turkey on their daily McDonalds.

I haven't had a drink in 3 weeks and no candy. That can't be a bad thing.

It hasn't stopped flights - as we chat there are a BA 747 and 777 in the air on the way to JFK - what it has stopped is non-US Citizens from flying from the UK to the USA.

Internal flights are however unrestricted, which given the figures for New York seems very unwise.

Can any of the folks with medical experience tell me something. Is it impossible to develop an innoculation for Coronavirus? To give someone a small enough dose of Coronavirus to trigger the right immune response without giving them a full blown attack? Or once you've given it to someone have you just given it to someone.

Viruses are pretty small to begin with. What small dose do you have in mind? Inoculation doesn’t work that way.
Yes, I know they multiply, hence my question. At the same time, you can get a greater or lesser viral load as far as I am aware.
While there is some evidence that a lower viral exposure gives your immune system better odds of fighting off the virus, basically no. It would be way too hazardous.

You might be thinking of attenuated live virus vaccines ?
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attenuated_vaccine

Which require a lengthy development process like other vaccines.
    Thanks, that's really interesting info.

My question stems from the old meaning of inoculation, which in the West was when they started administering small bits of smallpox puss to peoples' skin, which stimulated an immune response but didn't give people the full blown disease.
Edward Jenner had the inspiration that cowpox gave immunity to small pox, as milkmaids rarely caught the latter. He started inoculation with cowpox, not smallpox. This is the beginning of modern vaccinations. The skin of Jenners original cow is in the Library of St George's Hospital, Tooting.

Interesting; I'm going the other way. I started out as a right wing libertarian and now I'm questioning why I ever thought the idea of a free press was a good idea.
I'm getting more libertarian as the restrictions increase. I hate my options and movements being restricted - it brings back unhappy memories of boarding school.

I think a free *press* is fine. It's unconstrained free posting in the twattosphere that's the issue - full of fake news, hyperbole, confirmation bias and bullshit.

Best analogy I can think of is to why representative democracy is good but absolute democracy poor.
I agree with that, more or less. One of the problems we have is the regular media's bizarre insistence on reporting what happens on social media as "news".

Another is that, as regular print media continues circling the drain of irrelevance, they become ever more sensationalist in a desperate bid to retain and attract readers. Which leads to some incredibly dangerous headlines, which are all most people read or even see nowadays.

David Spiegelhalter (Professor of the Public Understanding of Risk at Cambridge) is always good at his job, here's his take on COVID-19. Apologies if you've seen it before. Worth looking at the website to see the graph. His point is that whatever your risk of dying is in a year (which varies based on age) is pretty close to your risk of dying if you catch COVID-19.

    https://medium.com/wintoncentre/how-much-normal-risk-does-covid-represent-4539118e1196

So, roughly speaking, we might say that getting COVID-19 is like packing a year’s worth of risk into a week or two. Which is why it’s important to spread out the infections to avoid the NHS being overwhelmed.

It’s important to note that all the risks quoted are the average (mean) risks for people of the relevant age, but are not the risks of the average person! This is because, both for COVID and in normal circumstances, much of the risk is held by people whom are already chronically ill. So for the large majority of healthy people, their risks of either dying from COVID, or dying of something else, are much lower than those quoted here. Although of course for every death there will be others who are seriously ill.

Also, as Triggle points out, there will be substantial overlap in these two groups — many people who die of COVID would have died anyway within a short period — and so these risks cannot be simply added, and it does not simply double the risk of people who get infected. It is crucially important that the NHS is not overwhelmed, but if COVID deaths can be kept in the order of say 20,000 by stringent suppression measures, as is now being suggested, there may end up being a minimal impact on overall mortality for 2020 (although background mortality could increase due to pressures on the health services and the side-effects of isolation). Although, as we are seeing, at vast cost.

This may rationally explain why some younger pub goers in Glasgow are doubtful about the policy. In an area and social group where male life expectancy is short, why abolish fun of every sort for party and pub goers so that middle class old people in Oxfordshire and Morningside can live a little longer in a care home at the cost not only of fun now ("youth's a thing will not endure"), but at the cost of millions of working class jobs and prospects, the world economy and future fun. None of the pointy heads are making that argument right now, and indeed I am not either, but it may have force in the long run.

I suspect Boris is instinctively always on the side of 'fun now, draw conclusions later' school. He may be finding all this a little hard going.

“The oldies destroyed my future by voting for Brexitand not satisfied they’re destroying my present by forcing us all indoor for weeks/months for their own protection”
That is just a horrible post - shame on you
Nonetheless, there is a section of society that feels that way. They see the Boomer's generation as having had it all and their generation having their future mortgaged by the elderly

    Google "Boomer Remover"...
Boomers’ parents would appear to be those at risk.
given boomers are from 1946 onwards that would make them 74 to 64 they seem right in the target zone I dont imaging to many 74 year olds have living parents nor 64 year olds for that matter

Wrong definition. I think boomer ends in 1964 so easy to have parents i their eighties. I do.
Lots of boomers are: caring for parents, running a bank for their children and doing day care for grand children. Busy people

Lesser of two evils in my book

That depends what it means. I’m still “going out as normal”, mostly walking the dog, but keeping my distance from people. I would have answered yes to the survey, yet reckon my risk is negligible. I’m just not going out as normal so much, since so much is closed.

There are also tons of key workers who would also answer yes.
I answered yes to the YouGov survey, on going to work. It didn't make a distinction between types of work.

I might be as close as you'll get on here. I would happily have voted for Trump over Clinton in 2016, and it's only in the last few months that I'd even be questioning that decision. I'd vote Trump over Sanders in a heartbeat, and almost certainly over Warren, but would take just about any of the other Dem contenders without thinking.

My credentials established, here's why he'll lose:
    - He got bloody lucky last time out and needs to do something special just to stand still
    - The Dems are VERY focused on beating him this time, and won't waste time on nonsense about him not being sufficiently feministic
    - A lot of Middle Americans are about to lose their jobs and the damage won't have had nearly enough time to unpick itself by November
    - Biden is, as a candidate, an order of magnitude better than Clinton - cf how much better he's doing against Sanders
    - The long run demographic trends in places like North Carolina and Texas are still very much against the Republicans, 2016 notwithstanding

Today, I planted an apple tree.

I hope to post a photo tomorrow.

In these darkest times, nature will help us cope.

    Bravo.

'To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.'
Thanks. The old one died, suddenly, last summer. It was around a hundred years old. Left in the garden from the days well before the houses around here were built.

I am determined that something apple will be around in the garden long after I have shuffled off my mortal coil.

Ok fellow pbers. I have the virus.
Just had the most terrifying 3 hours of my life struggling to breathe. No other symptoms just couldn't breathe.

Now I have fever and the shakes etc. I prefer it with the shakes as it hides my breathing.
No one wants this. It is frightening. What are we (my wife is laid up next to me) supposed to do with our 4 and 5 year old asleep in their beds? Who would take them if we deteoriate? God knows.

Very sorry to hear. Keep hydrated. If you're able to, make sure any important relatives or friends are aware of the situation by text and email. Try and keep your phone near you and charged all the time, and don't have any qualms about either you or wife ringing for help from either 111 or 999 if yoo don't improve. Try and stay as calm as you can under the circumstances, and rather than fear, try and visualise an improvement and the infection being quietly but powerfully defeated. In marginal situations like this one mind over matter can make a surprising but important difference. Good luck and all the very best.
Really sorry to hear this. Get well soon and take care of yourself @GideonWise

Internal flights are however unrestricted, which given the figures for New York seems very unwise.
New York now accounts for a full 5% of all the confirmed cases in the world. I bet there are tons of people fleeing the city for relatives in other states right now.

I didn't realise that. Is it open to public view? I find seeing things visually helps excite my daughter about important historical events.

You would hope politicians everywhere in every country have ceased voting on partisan grounds and are purely focussed on getting through this
Have you met the Republican party?

I find it mind blowing. It was one thing when it was other in China, but we have had weeks of this now and especially day in day out footage of the horrors of Italy. There can't be anybody in the country who hasn't heard about this.

Even if the government messaging hasn't been firm enough, how the f##k do people think we are any different from Italy, Spain, France, America.
Because we’re British and we do things better than everyone else, there were a few examples on here a week ago extolling the UK action plan as superior to the rest of Europe.

I wonder if we arent concentrating on the wrong numbers surely the number hospitalised and in icu with covid are what we need
For example a lot different between 10 in icu with it 5 dead and 100,000 in icu 5 dead
My daily Spanish figures show hospitalized and icu as well as dead and recovered. About 20-25% hospitalized, 5-8% icu worryingly the % of health worker cases is growing and a significant proportion of the total.

I bet you are pleased....the NHS frontline staff are placing themselves at significant risk over the months to come....the asymptomatic ones just get over exposed to the virus and it gets them terribly....

I spend time reassuring my sister with 3 medics....but if staff do get ill...you must get priority treatment....

I didn't realise that. Is it open to public view? I find seeing things visually helps excite my daughter about important historical events.
I haven't been for a while, but it used to be on the wall by the entrance to the Medical School Library. They have John Hunter's* couch too. Reputedly he died of apoplexy on it while arguing with colleagues.

God knows.

Remarkable PB dedication. Get well soon
