I am genuinely surprised that the likes of Trump haven't been placed inside some sort of protective apparatus. If a chemical weapon had just gone off, they would have him in a bunker in seconds.

I assumed a French Canadian euphemism for brothel but dunno!

There can't be much else to do in Canada if watching sap boil is considered a day out.

My hands have got that bad I have gone all metro-sexual and started using Mrs U posh hand creams....she isn't impressed.
My situation is similar.
I've always thought there must be a huge gap in the market for shampoos and hand creams that can be used by both sexes.
It’s called nivea isn’t it?
According to the owner of a shoe store in Rome I visited (wonder if he is still there?), Nivea is awful for your skin but great for your leather shoes.
I hope the Coronavirus isn’t as bad as forecasted, but the worlds inhabitants learn a lesson about the true price of globalism. I went for a run through the countryside and past the lake this morning and could almost hear them breathing a sigh of relief

Actually my wife and I are going to self isolate from wednesday
We have had weekly grocery deliveries for over two years and have paid for and got a weekly recurring slot. However it is noticeably that more products are becoming unavailable for delivery
We have discussed the issue with our daughter and son in law and our youngest son and his fiancee and as they have colds they will not be calling and we have suspended the school runs for our grandchildren. Indeed we do not expect contact with them for some time though we can video call through whats app
We will be going into town tomorrow to draw some cash, pay bills, and pick up a few groceries and birthday presents for our grandchildren
Both our son and daughter in law and ourselves have accepted that we will not meet again in Vancouver or in Wales before late Spring 2021 and will continue using social media daily to keep in touch
As we have a porch door all deliveries will either be left in the porch or more likely just outside and we will sterilise the porch door handle constantly
We are fortunate to have a lovely home and garden and can enjoy both without being within 2 metres of the public
Our children will collect items as we need them and we will use Amazon a lot more
We have just had dental checks and hairdressing so they can go on the backburner
While this is difficult it is necessary to do everything we can to prevent us becoming a burden on the NHS which with my copd I could be and at least in a small way trying to defeat this virus
And the BBC have extended free tv licence to the end of august for the over 75s
* There is a change in the tone of our politics as it has got serious. Much of the childish abuse of the last few years seems very out of place. It would be nice if this moderation became the new norm.
At bmy local mercadona in SE Spain we had a small queue at the start of the day - already gone by the time I left - the one metre rule followed by everyone and most things available. My guess is things will ease a lot here over the next few days - small population and you really cannot bulk buy beyond a certain amount. People here very orderly and good humoured.
Relax everyone... Apparently Johnson has had a phone call with MBS on the subject of Death Plague 2020. He should have got some tips on how to deal with those problematic journalists who refuse to kiss his arse if nothing else.

Globalisation is one thing.
The lunatic assumption that that the Chinese government is some sort of viable international partner than we can work with on a high level is quite another.
To add my report from the end of the world, I am currently sunning myself in Pafos waiting to get the bus to the airport. I got to Cyprus a day late but have managed some sort of holiday with the country progressively closing down round me - from 6am today bars and restaurants have been closed so I had to get lunch at Sainsbury's. My EasyJet flight is actually flying as scheduled, but it's effectively a rescue flight as no-one's allowed in any more. Hotels have been given 6 day's grace so their clients can work out how to get home. Paphos General Hospital has been closed after a Brit in ICU caught the virus of two rellies who came to see him, followed by frantic contact-chasing.
If she had been in China, she wouldn't be seeing any sunlight at all for the next few years....she would be sharing a dormitory with a load of Uighurs in a re-education camp.

Just guess at the sleb you think will succumb to Wuflu first. The winner will be lauded until our voices are hoarse while the losers will be derided with language characterised by violent sexual imagery. Imagine coming last...

I pick Kieth Richards. He's been living on borrowed time since before GCSEs were introduced.
It increasingly seems to me that the world is coming to a halt and that everything will be about the virus for the rest of this year. So many things that seemed so important have been put into perspective. I'd like to think that we can mostly come out of this older and wiser.
So, are there any good things to come from this virus? Without being morbid and thinking about pension deficits I would suggest the following possibilities:
* There are real signs of an increase in community spirit. Perhaps the Italians in Rome defiantly singing their national anthem from their balconies was the best sign of that but we are all being forced to think hard about the vulnerable in our society and how they need help. It would be nice if this were to continue after this is over. * The changes in the housing market will make prices much more affordable for prospective new buyers. Much of the froth from the last few years will be gone. * From the climate perspective the drastic reduction in flying and travel will be a very good thing. Hopefully the lessons and habits we learn from this period will stay with us. * There is a change in the tone of our politics as it has got serious. Much of the childish abuse of the last few years seems very out of place. It would be nice if this moderation became the new norm. * The position of gig economy workers and the low paid has got far more attention than before. Surely we will not go back to such long delays in the provision of benefits or such an obnoxious penalty regime as we had before. This is going to be an ongoing challenge. How will society work as more and more of us are in such precarious work with such uncertainties about our future? This is a real issue that will shape our politics. * Some of the more extreme voices on the right are learning or relearning the importance of an activist state that can make society work better. If the State comes out of this reasonably well I think that will moderate some of our politics. Will the argument (which I have made myself) that deficits matter be sustainable? Will the idea of State Aid be so alien if funding keeps many companies afloat? * We just might get rid of Donald Trump 4 years early.
This society and my generation have been cosseted from major wars or disruption throughout our lives. That is a good thing but it has made us soft and self indulgent. We might just grow up a bit.
In the real world, away from this Vera Lynn stuff, economic activity, and therefore government revenues, will utterly collapse. Utterly.
UK job losses. Shall we say five million? ten? UK economic activity, Shall we say minus fifteen per cent? government revenues....what shall we cut first??
Wake up mate.
That very much depends upon what government does and how much support is made available to firms with cash flow issues. This may be relatively short term with a bounce back next year but I suspect some industries like cruising, aviation etc are going to take forever to fully recover.

For some light relief, this reminds me of the 1980's film National Lampoon's European Vacation. Just arrived in London, the teenage American enthusiastically turns on his hotel tv to find a very slow programme about the the making of cheese on BBC2, with a very serious and painstaking but "educationally" cheery voiceover. He turns off in disgust.

Well, quite.
This is a country which has barbaric and unhygienic live meat markets allowing such a virus to develop and escape, which did nothing when the disease first came to light, which punished those brave doctors and others who gave a warning, which is probably lying about what has gone on in the country and which is now trying to blame other countries for its failings.
A few spare respirators to Italy is, frankly, the very least they can do.

Nonsense, that needs to be for another year
Best wishes Mr G.
Thanks. We will be ok. We worry for so many who will not
My morning routine. get wife up and after she has showered and dressed asks me where we going for lunch, I say nowhere they are all closed. Why? Because of the virus What virus? The one that’s on the news 24*7 Oh

I hope the Coronavirus isn’t as bad as forecasted, but the worlds inhabitants learn a lesson about the true price of globalism. I went for a run through the countryside and past the lake this morning and could almost hear them breathing a sigh of relief
Globalisation is one thing.
The lunatic assumption that that the Chinese government is some sort of viable international partner than we can work with on a high level is quite another.
I'm generally very wary of Vox as a news source but this video is interesting nonetheless re the markets. Seems their existence and growth in current form is actually a relatively recent policy decision though I can't figure out why they aren't at least hygiene-regulated - or maybe there are rigorous rules but a few backhanders are enough to get around them?

Repeat again tomorrow.
So sorry to hear that it must be very challenging.
What would I do tomorrow if I did all my shopping today! Will wait till about 3 when it’s quietest.

All best wishes for you both. Really can't be helpful so many of your traditional routines are breaking down. I hope your wife doesn't find the additional confusion distressing.

I just need to stay cool but it’s testing me from all directions now Can’t do anything about it so no point getting upset. Thanks for the comments I’m sure there are others out their living with different forms of dementia and it’s good to share sometimes.
The regional government in Quebec has ordered the closure bars, theatres, gyms, ski hills, sugar shacks, arcades, and pools, while restaurants have been told to operate only at 50% capacity and the over-70s have been urged to stay at home, the Montreal Gazette reports.
?! Wtf is a "sugar shack"?
I assumed a French Canadian euphemism for brothel but dunno!
It's where the sap of the maple tree is boiled and made into maple syrup. This is sugaring-off season where the syrup is made and people will visit to watch.
There can't be much else to do in Canada if watching sap boil is considered a day out.

Second that. Quite challenging where I am at the moment, but not as bad as that.

The hotel sector has made 60,000 beds available to the Community of Madrid to house coronavirus patients, according to what the regional vice president, Ignacio Aguado, announced on Monday. These places, Aguado indicated in an interview in La Sexta, will be devoted to " to keep in isolation people who can no longer be at home but do not require an ICU either. "
What was that anti-viral (made from flowers I believe) that the government was stockpiling for the SARS outbreak, haven't heard it mentioned this time. While I was trying to find it on Google, I did come across this: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/06/170629123855.htm

My attempts to work from home are being stymied by unreliable Wi-fi at the other end.
Yes I did wonder about whether all the firms asking staff to work from home had the network infrastructure for them all to "dial in". I work for one of the biggest tech companies on the planet and they have just asked people not to sit on the VPNs for longer than necessary to access internal systems.

Agreed.

No chicken, no eggs, no pasta, no toilet paper.
Luckily I was buying Guinness.
I've always thought there must be a huge gap in the market for shampoos and hand creams that can be used by both sexes.
Who'd have guessed.

If she had been in China, she wouldn't be seeing any sunlight at all for the next few years....she would be sharing a dormitory with a load of Uighurs in a re-education camp.
Cure coronavirus instantly
