Even though barely 6% of precincts have reported as I write, the networks have all declared Joe Biden the winner in the South Carolina Primary. At the moment he’s heading for more than 50% of the entire vote and it is hard to see anything other than him sweeping the state.

Biden should pick up other deep South states like Alabama and Oklahoma on Super Tuesday after his South Carolina win but otherwise Sanders looks likely to win big and even take Texas

Apparently the first case discovered in Italy was a fit 38 year old with no pre-existing conditions.

Mattia, the 38-year-old from Lodi "patient 1" of the Coronavirus in Italy, who since Friday, February 21 is hospitalized in serious condition in the infectious diseases department of the Policlinico San Matteo di Pavia, a facility run by Raffaele Bruno from Cosenza, where he was transported from Codogno Hospital when what appeared to be common flu symptoms began to show serious respiratory complications. Mattia is the most serious patient of all patients hospitalized for Coronavirus in Italy: The Calabrian doctor Bruno explains that Mattia is "sedated, unconscious and intubated because he is not autonomous in breathing.

    http://www.strettoweb.com/2020/02/coronavirus-38enne-lodi-gravi-condizioni/977269/

Without adequate medical care Mattia would be dead. The care he is receiving at the moment would not be possible if there were many more cases. While the risk to healthy young people is low, there is still a very real risk.

The question is how the Bloomberg vote holds up. Movement from Bloomberg -> Biden puts Biden over top in North Carolina and close in Texas based on those polls.

There is a Black vote in North Carolina (32%) and Texas (19%) but nothing close to the 55% in South Carolina

Yeah, Sanders still is going to have a fairly large delegate lead coming out of Tuesday (which is a day a large chunk of the South votes). So Biden does need to widen his appeal to have any chance of catching up after that. If he can fully absorb the Bloomberg vote in places like Illinois and Pennsylvania he still has some hope.

There's already big signs of substantial community transmission, with new potential clusters popping up all over (4 cases in Chicago apparently). By the time the US realises that they have a problem containment will be pointless.

I think all the moderates will get squished but *especially* Bloomberg. It's one thing to get a polling result by showing TV ads in states that aren't voting yet where nobody else is on the air and the voters haven't thought much about it. It's a totally different thing to actually get votes. Steyer just trialled the same strategy on SC and it fizzled, and he's a much less atrocious candidate than Bloomberg.

Something more encouraging, the graph for deaths and cases on

    https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

    show a distinct levelling off.

However this might be because the data is distorted by Chinese under-reporting, and/or the uniquely draconian Chinese reaction; added to which, the new rise in cases around the world has yet to impact on overall numbers.

The next week should tell us. But maybe there's a glimmer of hope.

As you well know, China cases are irrelevant to the worldwide spread. Look at the map excluding China cases.

    Open up this: https://www.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6

Maximise the chart in the bottom right, and look at the yellow line (cases outside China).

    29/02: 6.4k (so far)
    28/02: 5.3k
    27/02: 4.3k
    25/02: 2.8k
    20/02: 1.2k
    14/02: 0.6k

That shows a pretty dramatic slowing of the infection rate:

    20.75%
    23.26%
    53.57%
    133.33%
    100.00%

(Although, of course, there might be a number of countries which - errrrr... - aren't doing a very good job of tracking infections. Like, the US.)
Ah sorry, I should have clarified that those were selected dates, not every date.

The rough daily infection rates are:

    15th Feb-20th Feb: 15%
    21-25: 24%
    26-27: 24%
    28: 24%
29: 23+% (depending on how many more cases are found. Another 100 would raise it to the standard 24%.)
29th ended up at 6.8k. So a new record of a 28% 1 day jump in intl cases. So far the big 'gains' are in Italy, SK, and Iran. Expect USA, France, Germany to start to contribute significantly in a couple of days.

Guess the difference is that as well as good medical care they have really great testing, they probably have a more accurate number for how many were infected than everyone else.

I would also hope as more is learned about this virus that it will be better understood what is best practice. During the initial outbreak, not only where obviously China covering it up, but I would think they were pissing in the dark of how to possibly treat those.

NHS gender clinic 'should have challenged me more' over transition

A 23-year-old woman who is taking legal action against an NHS gender clinic says she should have been challenged more by medical staff over her decision to transition to a male as a teenager.

A judge gave the go-ahead this week for a full hearing of the case against the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust.

Lawyers will argue children cannot give informed consent to treatment delaying puberty or helping them to transition.

Very good testing, very competent medical care, but most importantly, relatively tiny numbers of infected. Outside Hubei, China had a death rate of 0.6%, just a bit over 1/10th of what the mortality rate was in Wuhan.

Great work in Singapore tracing virus path - new serological test works among recovered vs current PCR test which only works among infected - allowing them to link two previous separate clusters into one, so they no longer have any unidentified sources:

That doesn’t read well for him at all, especially the Windrush stuff which was an administrative error rather than a political one. It will be rather amusing if Amber Rudd ends up helping Priti Patel’s defence.

There’s a fine line between advising the minister in the department of the realities of policy decisions, and being the stereotypical Sir Humphrey who seems to relish blocking the programme on which the government was elected.

Indeed. Trump’s usually quite good at the base politics of these things, even if he is a very polarising character. It wouldn’t have been difficult for him to demand quarantine for anyone returning from China, Korea or Iran, then include Italy when various Democrats accuse him of being racist. But he just seems to be blundering through, and the CDC don’t have a clue what’s going on. The exponential rise is cases is likely to continue (as it has everywhere else) and it looks like no-one is in charge.

Taxpayers’ Alliance released their annual report last week on public funding of campaign groups. They found over £39m paid to groups who then mostly lobbied against government policy. https://www.taxpayersalliance.com/taxpayer_funded_lobbying_and_political_campaigning_2020
Did the the Tax Payers Alliance then say who funded themselves?

Sanders is back into 2.02 for the nomination. He drifted for a time overnight but is now back in to where he was yesterday.

Not too sure that (American) late-night comedians making light of the Coronavirus situation or turning it into the usual president-bashing routine is going to help much either.

They have a donate button on their website, and a whole page dedicated to their own funding. You can donate to them if you like ;)
    https://www.taxpayersalliance.com/funding
They have 12 staff and an annual budget of around £1m, which last year was made up of nearly 2,000 donations.
They don’t take public money, nor donations from anyone who seeks to influence their policy direction.

Betfair STILL hasn’t settled the Iowa Caucus market, and it was nearly four weeks ago now. Everyone else has long since moved on (Pete who?) and thinking about ‘Super’ Tuesday. What an almighty screw-up by the Iowa Democrats.
Betfair are like a utility company delaying your final bill and refund after your switch.

They just dig that free cashflow so much.
To be fair to Betfair, they’re not the ones at fault here. The result has only just been formally announced, so if there’s no way of challenging it further they should pay out when someone on their politics desk wakes up this morning.

When will Amazon learn I don't want to review every purchase I make with it?

Waitrose don't ask me every time I go into their store. For every product..

About a quarter of its MPs and MSPs who are literally going against the SNP manifesto promise.

Don't always buy from Amazon either, I found books I wanted to read at double digit prices and then searched on World of Books and got them for about £3 with free delivery.. That's a lot cheaper than even www.abebooks.co.uk which is a great resource for books. (.com) if you are overseas. Its a website of all the second hand (or most) second hand booksellers).

Sanders will collect 15 delegates from South Carolina, Biden getting 39.
    2016 was Clinton 39, Sanders 14

They only support groups who support them?

Well, Biden didn't get to 3.5 but I'll gladly lay him at 3.85 to equalise outcome between him and Bernie and repair my Bloomberg hole.

Amazingly Warren actually shortened from yesterday! Go Liz.

I don't understand this. Do you get a notification or something? They never badger me.

I don't really like Amazon very much but when I went into Waterstones to buy the latest Michael Connelly 'The Night Fire' (which is quite superb by the way) they wanted £20 off me. Amazon offered me the same hardback for £8. It does get really hard to support your local bookshop under such circumstances.

F1: first race is in a fortnight.

The Ladbrokes market (win) is now fifth the odds top 3, which is more like it.

I had a £1 free bet, and decided to put it on Sainz at 251 each way (so, 51 on a podium, essentially). McLaren historically do well in Oz. Unlikely to come off, but it's a free bet, so...

Indeed not, but comments like the LA air is so bad it kills all germs straight away are probably best not said, even in jest.

The comedians are usually better at finding the right balance with serious stories, which suggests that there’s a major misunderstanding of the risks in the USA. They’re probably already now past the point at which a serious epidemic can be averted.

Good morning all. And a real first day of Spring it is here, too!

Amazon seem to have undergone some sort of hacking. We frequently...... sometimes three or four times a day..... bet an American woman telling us our Prime account is about to be renewed.
We haven't got a Prime account.
Tells me that if I press 1 I can be connected, but I'm not getting into their system.
The calling numbers are all different, so it can't be genuine.

Mr. Root, Abebooks can be very useful for second hand copies but do not* that it's owned by Amazon now.

    Edited extra bit: note*, even.

I've laid off Biden a bit this morning and filled in most of my Bloomberg hole at 10.5/11.

Will dig it deeper again if he drops down to 7s again.

its a scam there are similar ones telling you £600 has been taken from your credit card/bank account, press 1 to be connected to the bank etc etc. they sound so genuine. A lady in our Church lost a lot of money over this.

Sounds like the latest version of “Windows Support” calls from a few years ago.

My office full of genuine IT support folks would play games with how long we could keep one of them on the line, as they attempted to dial in to our PC to install their malware.

We figured it was community service, as they wouldn’t be on the phone to our parents and grandparents while we were dicking them around. ;)

Amazon haven’t been hacked, the scammers are just calling random numbers. Registering with the Telephone Preference Service might help, but most of these scammers are offshore, usually in India. If you get through to a human, ask them if their mum is proud of what they do - they really don’t like that question.

TripAdvisor is annoying me similarly, even though I quite like it as a service. I live in Godalming and had a visitor, who I booked a B&B for. Ever since, TripAdvisor asks me every day whether I'm thinking of visiting Godalming again, so they can make suggestions. There is no "unsubscribe" option or any other obvious way to stop it.

Messrs Square Root & Sandpit, it's obviously a scam, but I wish I could make them stop. It's a different number each time so I can't block them. I'm reaching the stage of not answering anything; friends & family will leave a message.
Incidentally, why don't those calls come through on mobiles.
We andyway get few if any such calls on those. About the only ones I get on that are once a month asking me about a non-existent accident.

As an author I try to support my local bookshop.

However, Waterstones are not the enlightened company you might think. Little better than Amazon, frankly, as these links illustrate:

The other insidious one is "something wrong with your ebay purchase"

There a security professional with a blog post about how he almost fell for one of them because, by coincidence, he received the email 5 minutes after making an eBay purchase.

Just shows how easy it is to fall for "obvious" scams.

Odd; I use Trip Advisor quite a lot and I've never had that. Flashes up in my inbox every so often telling me I'm nearly a Star Member or something, but there doesn't seem to be any advantage in so being.
