Also, no human being worthy of my respect could, when hungry, be offered a choice of a roast potato or bacon/sausage related product and choose the potato. Roast potatoes are great, but they are the support act.
All factors but none of that changes the core facts that Mansfield is a working class seat and Huntingdon is a middle class seat and since 1992 Mansfield has gone from just 33% Tory to 64% Tory while Huntingdon has gone from 66% Tory to 54% Tory.
The Labour vote has collapsed in Mansfield from 54% in 1992 to just 30% now while in Huntingdon the Labour vote has actually risen from 16% in 1992 to 22% now
We need a thread on the efficiency of the Tory vote......

I'm at work today, but will be on a plane tomorrow bored for six hours and thinking of Christmas. Will see if I can knock up something going back half a dozen elections .
I’d have to play with the data to take a proper view, but my instinct is that “votes per seat” somehow needs normalising to take account of sizes of seats to be really meaningful. Some sort of “adjusted votes per seat”.
That's a good point, which of course makes the analysis more difficult! Also complicating things are that the boundaries changed for both the 2010 and 1997 elections, and the variances in both turnout and electorate size by election, all of which need to be adjusted for over a raw votes-per-seat statistic. Maybe I need to take a longer flight!

Why do you hate the Jews?
You must be a Labour Party member right?
Er, isn't he implying he hates Muslims just as much?
In the context of a "favourite Christmas food", I'm not convinced either case is relevant.

Jews and Muslims celebrate Christmas as well.
Although in this household our Christmas Day food begins with hors d’ouevres of onion bhajis and samosas, followed by salmon replete with mash, glazed carrots and parsnips.

It comes as no surprise to find that out for certain. The woman is a deluded former MP who lost her seat because she was so out of touch with the voters in her constituency. She deserved to get the boot from the voters.
He might just have the makings of a fine prime minister. He's certainly the first I can watch, since Early Blair, without wincing or yawning.
Super message. I wouldn't have acknowledged that AS was on the rise though. Even if one thinks it is. We should always focus on the positive - on moving forward together. That was the only bum note for me. The genuine interest Boris has in history and culture is deployed well here.
Thanks for the thread. A reminder that: 1. Wolves are top of the league table (of teams in seats which changed hands at the GE.) 2. West Bromwich (East and West) don't have a football team worthy of the name, although in Wolverhampton we knew that already.
Mentioning West Bromwich reminds me:
Has anyone seen @alb1on since he called me an idiot who didn’t know what he was talking about for suggesting that he was a LibDem shill who was massively overestimating their chances?
Correct Horse Battery seems to have disappeared too..??
To be fair to him, he was around for a few days afterwards.
Yes He was but he was either a troll or knew sfa ....
Quite a few Labour people (and I expect, others, apart from those who can't stop rejoicing) are simply giving politics a rest for a few weeks until we get stuck into the leadership election and the Government trundles through its Brexit legislation - nobody's doing anything significant till next month, so we're catching up with the rest of life. Went to a birthday party for a 1-year-old dog last night, how apolitical is that?

I reckon he had to do this, to give some closure to British Jews, who were clearly and honestly terrified that a real anti-Semite like Corbyn came so close to power.
The vid in the Golders Green bakery convinced me of the fear.
So Jews needed to hear a passionate vindication of their identity, in a British context, not just the normal mealy-mouthed multiculti platitudes.
What with this, and business confidence booming after the election

Turkey, is pretty dry tbh, I'll give you that.
That's why you give it a wee bacon hat (obviously not for everyone), and add oranges to its nooks and crannies.

Have we done a bad last night's BBC Xmas Carol show was? Utterly dire doesn't begin to describe it. What the hell do the BBC think they are doing? Already on the rack under Johnson, and they pull this cracker.

Who on earth watches BBC content expecting anything from it. Your own fault even trying.
Boris' Chanukah speech has also won praise from US Democrats, Dutch socialists and German Greens. And Ted Cruz. See Twitter.
How nice to have a Prime Minister admired around the world for his eloquence and learning. It must make you proud to be a Briton!
A PM that takes us back to the early days of Blair, fair brings a lump to the throat. Lets not speculate on what it's a lump of..
Why is there such a strong element of anti-Semitism in Scot Nationalism?
I never knew of it, until the Jezbollah brought such joy to our politics. Indeed, I would never have conceived of it. But it really does exist and it is especially virulent.
Is it that Irish affection for similarly persecuted Palestine which perceives Britain as = Zionism, or something, which has maybe infected Scot Nattery?
That must be one factor, but it doesn't quite explain the bile of Nat Jew Hatred.
This is not to claim any superiority. England has a long tradition of AS, tho the posh version on the Right now seems to have largely died out, sadly replaced by a left wing variant.
He might just have the makings of a fine prime minister. He's certainly the first I can watch, since Early Blair, without wincing or yawning.
It's a nice message, warm and with genuine sincerity, which is the best kind. Not sure what to make of it as the normal Boris is insincere with a gaping moral emptiness. Humans are complex, I guess.

I have tentative hopes that Boris is Prince Hal becoming Henry V.
All his life he's been a gifted clown, hedonistic and careless, and, yes, deeply insincere. Spoilt, too.
Perhaps the burdens of office, instead of diminishing or crushing him, might allow him to fulfil his obvious potential, and become a great statesman.
Lord knows I will likely be disappointed. But this is a hopeful time of year. So let's hope.

Mrs Eek made my watch Jane MacDonald's Christmas special on Channel 5 (not live - she earns more for streamed shows). It was surprising watchable - especially the cruises given away to good causes - 2 people who had donated organs and another who had lost all her limbs to sepsis but was now raising awareness of it.

It is interesting but unconvincing. These retrospective surveys can be more about rationalisation than reasons. For instance, a third of 2017 Labour voters abandoned the party over Jeremy Corbyn's leadership! Who do they think was running the show in 2017 then?

I know you detest Bojo for Brexit, but Boris has undeniable talent, and is assembling a good team. Let's pray he makes the best of both.
Assembling a good team? He's supported by the weakest Cabinet in living memory, and by a Parliamentary party that has just carefully expelled every individual who wasn't a complete lunatic.
He can be relied upon to act in his own self-interest at every stage. That will make him largely predictable. Which is, I suppose, something.

Is Rugby Union now the most left-wing sport in the country (on selected measures)?
Rugby Union is the only major sport where teams represent more Labour constituencies than Conservative ones across all three top leagues (Premiership: 5.5L, 4.5C. 2 LD. Championship: 6L, 3C, 1LD. National 1: 10L, 5C, 1LD.

Depends how you cook it.
Butter under the skin, bacon on top and water in the cavity to steam the inside and keep it moist.
However, duck or goose is a better bet. Capon works too if you've been organised and ordered one in November.

Turkey: the trick is to buy a crown or better still a breast joint for added moistness; don't buy a full turkey. Goose is 90 per cent fat. Duck is a bit Masterchef.

Could have been worse, you could have been driving along the M6 though Walsall this lunchtime.
I wouldn't class it as a Christmas film, but it's a Christmas season film if that makes sense.
Xmas 100% as Stormzy would say.
Mark Kermode has it down as a full on xmas film. At its core, it's a princess trapped in a tower that needs saving by her prince. She's even called Holly!

You have not had roast potatoes that have been properly cooked.
I can say that as a simple, basic statement. The best roast potatoes beats anything else on the Christmas plate.
Except for Bread Sauce obviously. That shit is delicious.
Christmas food shopping. For a lot of the posh stuff, it was necessary to pre-order (and collect on one of about three designated days) or do without. There was very little on the shelves for the ordinary or impulse buyer. I imagine this is to reduce wastage but I expect the result will be disappointing food sales announced in January.

I am not confident of predicting Johnson because alongside his acute sense of self-interest he is highly irresponsible. The need to compromise comes a sense of obligation to others, to look after their interests and not muck up. Johnson has none of that sense of obligation. Johnson is an interesting and complex character in the way that the truly dishonest can be and not that easy to read.
Trending topic of the day. Will we get Sir Nigel Farage in the New Year? As Johnson giving Farage a knighthood for services to Brexit (and Johnson) would be the ultimate sophisticated humiliation, there must be a good chance,

Yes, I have a glance a couple of times a day too. I hope your mother and mother-in-law recuperate quickly - a bad time of year to be unwell.
My priority remains a left-wing leader to represent me, but obviously I'd like one who's electable too. I'm keeping an open mind until I hear the candidates' pitches. They too seem mostly to have generally decided to give it a rest till the New Year.

Thank you, we are fighting the hospital who are trying to clear the wards. I fear that "left wing leader" and "electoral success" are incompatible in Modern Britain.

So, there seems to be a rumour about Arlene Foster circulating. Not going to say any more as there's a fair chance it's bullshit, but it's not tricky to find.
If true I will laugh until I cry. It would be quite the most delicious thing.

On a negative note, anyone who thinks Britain (and the British Left in particular) doesn't have a problem with anti-semitism should have a look at the comments under Johnson's video. Incredibly depressing. I know the outspoken nutter/idiot density is greater on Twitter than "in real life" but that doesn't mean these peole aren't actually out there too, when they're away from the computer...

Mission Accomplished.
640k votes received in the GE - that is a big chunk available next time.
My wife and I have just listened to Boris's tribute to our British Jews and it is quiite the most beautiful and emotional piece we have ever heard from a politician and we are not surprised it is receiving world wide acclaim
Many congratulations Boris on reminding us of our Jewish heritage and for speaking up for us against the evil forces of anti semitism

If true I will laugh until I cry. It would be quite the most delicious thing.
Foster was heard to shout, "Éirinn go Brách!" in a moment of ecstasy? It would explain some of the DUPs Brexit positions in the impossible case of it being true!
There's hopeful and then there's deluded.
Maybe, but look
His message made this Italian Jewish journalist cry.
I know you detest Bojo for Brexit, but Boris has undeniable talent, and is assembling a good team. Let's pray he makes the best of both.
Trending topic of the day. Will we get Sir Nigel Farage in the New Year? As Johnson giving Farage a knighthood for services to Brexit (and Johnson) would be the ultimate sophisticated humiliation, there must be a good chance,
Also Sir Jeremy Corbyn for services to the Conservative party.

Yeah, apart from the ones calling for the Chief Rabbi and Rachel Riley to apologise, and those blaming the "settlement-owned media" for the election result(!)
Are we not all emotionally damaged by the propensity of the BBC and itv to flog the same ten films to death every Christmas? Thank god for streaming services.

If Corbyn WERE a deep cover double-agent for the Tories, I really can't imagine what else he could have done to aid their cause without giving away the game.
Even down to promoting Long Bailey as his successor.

Netflix are going to have a very happy Christmas in a lot of households. Loads of new series and comedy specials in the queue.
If I was Jewish I think I would cry after watching that. Simply beautiful.

The differences between those two videos is stark. The Boris actually made me tearful. It really spoke to the pain we have felt and then made me feel good about being Jewish. He got it. Then the Corbyn one felt like he was reading from a script, before switching to using a Jewish holiday to press his policy agenda and having a dig at the Government. I can't wait until he is dumped from the political scene forever. Good riddance.
There is a difference. Drowning and ice cream sales are correlated through hot weather as the cause of both. This allows us to make some sensible projections should the weather get hotter or colder. The same isn't true of the coincidence of cheese consumption and deaths by bedsheet tangling (600 deaths is a surprisingly large number for any population)

He could have asked Brexit to stand down in all labour seats, might have lost him a few more.. anyone know how many??
Will just use the short window before I get banned again for well who knows what to wish you all a merry Xmas and will be around to settle up any bets I have for 2020 with our SNP friends.
With the news that Ed Miliband is in charge of one of the post mortems it was interesting to hear on this podcast with Matthew Goodwin that Ed was briefed on the Labour meltdown over 5 years ago.

Indeed. Not my choice nor yours for leader, but seems to have quickly grasped the importance of the role and is doing his best to reach out to everyone.

It is true that neither my wife or I voted for Boris to lead the party but he has surprised on the upside and is gaining approval in our household and through our social media connections. A long way to go but he has all the makings of moving the party into the centre ground and even replicating the SNP in Scotland by removing any space for labour to stage a comeback

I wish you wouldn’t use mental health issues as an insult

You must be a Labour Party member right?
In the context of a "favourite Christmas food", I'm not convinced either case is relevant.

You get exceptions like Justin Bieber, he's a prick.
Although I wouldn't like living next door to a Romanian, etc.
How nice to have a Prime Minister admired around the world for his eloquence and learning. It must make you proud to be a Briton!
Although in this household our Christmas Day food begins with hors d’ouevres of onion bhajis and samosas, followed by salmon replete with mash, glazed carrots and parsnips.

The vid in the Golders Green bakery convinced me of the fear.
So Jews needed to hear a passionate vindication of their identity, in a British context, not just the normal mealy-mouthed multiculti platitudes.
What with this, and business confidence booming after the election

... we are in a good state to go into Christmas, and there is fine bright light, up ahead.
Chag Sameach indeed
Lets not speculate on what it's a lump of..
Have we done a bad last night's BBC Xmas Carol show was? Utterly dire doesn't begin to describe it. What the hell do the BBC think they are doing? Already on the rack under Johnson, and they pull this cracker.
They've got John Bercow doing their 'alternative' Christmas message, appealing for 'courtesy and compassion' without any sense of irony whatsoever.

but it doesn't stop me looking into PB to see what being said. My mother has just come out of hospital, my mother in law is in hospital and they are trying to chuck her out for Xmas. I have a lot to do, but I still give a few mins every now and then to the best politics blog around.
What are you going to do politically speaking?. You wanted seriously left wing Govt and the voters soundly rejected it.
How ill white hairs become a fool and jester...
Remain voters tend to be based in large towns and cities, as do successful football club. One does not cause the other.
Neutered one of the potential rallying points of the soft left from the current debate
In other words, they're delusional.

I must go and brave Selfridges Food Hall...... eeeeeek
Rugby Union is the only major sport where teams represent more Labour constituencies than Conservative ones across all three top leagues (Premiership: 5.5L, 4.5C. 2 LD. Championship: 6L, 3C, 1LD. National 1: 10L, 5C, 1LD.
One thing that I found really interesting is that we're approach Rugby League/Rugby Union political crossover.
However, duck or goose is a better bet. Capon works too if you've been organised and ordered one in November.
Labours official song.
Quite startling that there isn't likely to be a single non-continuity Corbyn candidate.
Stephen Kinnock should roll the dice - not much to lose.
Mark Kermode has it down as a full on xmas film. At its core, it's a princess trapped in a tower that needs saving by her prince. She's even called Holly!
I can say that as a simple, basic statement. The best roast potatoes beats anything else on the Christmas plate.
Except for Bread Sauce obviously. That shit is delicious.

My priority remains a left-wing leader to represent me, but obviously I'd like one who's electable too. I'm keeping an open mind until I hear the candidates' pitches. They too seem mostly to have generally decided to give it a rest till the New Year.
All the best for a good break.
I fear that "left wing leader" and "electoral success" are incompatible in Modern Britain.
If true I will laugh until I cry. It would be quite the most delicious thing.

Trying to avoid anything to do with football today, and PB does a thread on the bloody sport.
This is the sort of behaviour I’ve come to expect from fans of Chelsea and the spanners.
