Anna has 7 apples. Bryony has 4 apples. Cathy has 5 apples.

Who has the most apples? Don't all shout at once.

I think the trouble here is that the word "most" can be used in different ways that are equally correct.

At the 2017 General Election the Conservatives won the most seats but didn't win most of the seats. I think that works?
Yes that's how it works. "The most" means more than any other while simply "most of" means more than half. The Tories at the last election won the most votes and the most seats. They did not win most of the votes or most of the seats.

Waiting for Mr Clipp to apologise for dropping the word "the" from my post and accusing me falsely of making a mistake when I didn't. Not holding my breath though. It takes a big man to admit when they made a mistake.
I would have more sympathy for this observation were it not from a poster who still obdurately refuses to acknowledge that the claim that Turkey was joining the EU was a xenophobic lie.
The EU lists Turkey under "joining the EU" on their own website. Why is the EU promoting a xenophobic lie? https://europa.eu/european-union/about-eu/countries_en#joining-the-eu

You make out like all that happens to be joining the EU is the date you join but to quote "Becoming a member of the EU is a complex procedure which does not happen overnight."

Turkey is in the middle of the Joining the EU procedure listed there and is listed as nation under it.
It’s going to take a long long time before you get to be a big man.
    What does that even mean?

It’s OK Mr Meeks. We already know you think that it’s acceptable for the British government to tell Turkey one thing, and expect the electorate to accept a nod and a wink that something else is the case. Cameron would have won the referendum if he’d vetoed Turkish entry or at least promised a referendum while the Tories are in power.
In one of his blog posts, Dominic Cummings says that's what they wanted Cameron to do because no one would have believed him. He says that the time to announce such a veto was the night Cameron announced his deal with the EU and named the date.

That might all be true, but given that we know that Number 10 were worried in the last few days, it's odd that they didn't just announce the veto in the last week or so.

What a shame that the incumbent and leading rival are both crap. Especially when there are many better alternatives like Javid or Gove.

Who according to Yougov would see the Tories poll a significantly lower voteshare against Corbyn Labour under their leadership than under May or Boris
Because a large amount of the population don't know who they are. Boris has the advantage of a highly recognisable appearance
Javid is now Home Secretary, one of the 3 big offices of state and Gove is still in the Cabinet while Boris has left it. They cannot rely on the name recognition argument much longer and certainly not in a leadership campaign where they will have plenty of publicity
I was walking down Whitehall this afternoon when a group of tourists spotted a well-known MP crossing the road. Unfortunately, they could not remember his name, and there was frantic discussion in the group as their quarry hailed a cab. It turned out that Jacob Rees-Mogg, looking in the other direction, does not respond to shouts of Jasper.

FPT - the Tories have done an absolutely astonishing job on unemployment and the public finances. It’s remarkable how little credit they’re getting for it, or perhaps less so given how little May talks about the economy, but lowest unemployment for 45 years and borrowing for 16 years are statistics to die for.

Bit concerned about the debate on the previous thread at what to “throw money at”. I don’t think we should be throwing money at anything, least of all social care and NHS which are most likely to go hoover it all up with negligible results.

I do think both Defence and the Foreign Office need modest and targeted additional funding.

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/05/22/david-cameron-turkey-joining-eu-is-not-remotely-on-the-cards/

As per link text, he pretty much said it.

    While in 2010:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1297906/Turkey-join-EU-says-Cameron-Those-playing-fears-Islam.html

"David Cameron today accused critics of Turkey’s membership of the EU of playing on fears of Islam - as he pledged to ‘pave the road from Ankara to Brussels’. "

I'm not sure the bulk of the lying has been done by leavers here. Note also that the Mail quite reasonably says that the reason people fear the Turks joining is that they are too young, numerous and poor. It may be illiberal and howwid to object to immigrants on those grounds but it ain't xenophobic.

Nobody thanked the Conservatives in 1997 - why should they thank them now?

The social care funding issue is a real crisis and as we are seeing even well-run Conservative councils are struggling to cope. Do you have a solution to the adult social care funding situation and the Care ISA won't help the County Councils next year.

Whenever I hear the name Jasper for some strange reason I always think it would be a better term than Rogering. A good Jaspering sounds better to me than a good Rogering, if there is such a thing. Some roguish element as opposite to a damp squid kind of affair.

Quite. One side seems to be happy to use people as pawns in the negotiations.
Should you care to look back you will see that unlike the weasel Leavers who wanted to unilaterally guarantee EU nationals' rights, I from the start realised that there must be an agreement on both.

We are in a negotiation and it is one item on the agenda.
Two years ago I’d have agreed with you, that it was a negotiation item. Now that it’s quite clear that the EU side have no intention of negotiating in good faith and are quite prepared to screw their own economy as long as we also suffer, it’s time to make it clear that we are the adults in the room.
So you cave at the first sign of trouble.

    Jeez you Leavers are weak.

    Has this been discussed?
Another step towards normalising a united Ireland?

No, it makes zero difference as a majority of Catholic SDLP voters already back a united Ireland as do FF at least in theory (they are after all De Valera's Party) and the SDLP have 0 MPs anyway and given Stormont is still suspended effectively no representatives beyond a few Councillors
Cheers. Interesting to read about it in that context. What about the possibility of the UK Labour Party running Westminster candidates in NI?
There's very little support for that in the party - the feeling is that the SDLP are the partners and we shouldn't compete, even if they're currently struggling.

Interesting both of you focus on the lie aspect (newsflash Turkey isn’t joining the EU) and neither of you think about the xenophobic bit.
Because it can't be a lie, it was government and EU policy. Newsflash the EU is still today listing Turkry on its website under "joining the EU". Whether its xenophobic is debatable, the fact Turkey is/was within the 'not overnight' joining process (albeit its subsequently been suspended) isnt.

Nah, SPECTRE was one of the finest Bond films ever, the series is good rude health and needs a follow up.

Have they tried asking a Mr. Largo of Nassau?
Apparently enquiries are focussing on a Mr Karl Stromberg, whose supertanker "Liparus" was in the area...

Matthew Vaughan or Edgar Wright or Christopher Nolan. The latter has been making ersatz Bond movies for years: there are scenes in Inception and The Dark Knight Returns where he's not even bothering to hide it.

Bit concerned about the debate on the previous thread at what to “throw money at”. I don’t think we should be throwing money at anything, least of all social care and NHS which are most likely to go hoover it all up with negligible results.

The social care funding issue is a real crisis and as we are seeing even well-run Conservative councils are struggling to cope. Do you have a solution to the adult social care funding situation and the Care ISA won't help the County Councils next year.

the Tories have done an absolutely awful job on productivity and fraud, theft and money laundering. It’s remarkable how they’re getting away with it, or perhaps less so given how little May talks about the economy, but miserable productivity for 8 years and rampant fraud, theft and money laundering for 37 years are statistics getting brushed under the carpet.

I know why. Because the idea of 74 million largely poor Turks getting free movement wouldn't be popular. Doesn't change the fact it was government and EU policy.

Government policy isn't always popular. Oppositions are allowed to campaign against unpopular policies.

Nobody thanked the Conservatives in 1997 - why should they thank them now?

The social care funding issue is a real crisis and as we are seeing even well-run Conservative councils are struggling to cope. Do you have a solution to the adult social care funding situation and the Care ISA won't help the County Councils next year.

the Tories have done an absolutely awful job on productivity and fraud, theft and money laundering. It’s remarkable how they’re getting away with it, or perhaps less so given how little May talks about the economy, but miserable productivity for 8 years and rampant fraud, theft and money laundering for 37 years are statistics getting brushed under the carpet.
Isnt it something to do with a Finchley Road somewhere that no one has heard off
Check companies house records! There is a lot going on behind the scenes. As I've said before, politics is like an iceberg - there's the 1/8th that everybody sees. There's the remaining 7/8ths that is hidden from public view unless you look very deeply to find it.
At my time of life I could not be bothered - I have much more important things to do

    I'm changing my betting position.

For the first time someone has admitted their guilt in breaking campaign laws during the Trump campaign.

Trump's destiny is to become the God-Emperor of mankind, so I'm sure he'll be fine.

Nobody else has ever talked to people before. And no one in politics has ever cared about people either. What a saint!
  • Keep digging, small man. One day you will wonder why Vote Leave fixated on this.

I know why. Because the idea of 74 million largely poor Turks getting free movement wouldn't be popular. Doesn't change the fact it was government and EU policy.

Government policy isn't always popular. Oppositions are allowed to campaign against unpopular policies.
You are showing glimmerings of understanding the xenophobia underlying the focus.
The fact you're not disputing the EU uses the words Joining the EU in that context shows you are showing glimmerings of understanding it's not a lie to use the EU's own words.

Its a bit hard to keep up with all the competing Trump scandals and the various Trumpite states evidence conversions.

Does anyone have a concise summary?

    A few.

The most plausible, the ERG launch a VONC, Mrs May wins, but is damaged in the process.

Hunt becomes the not Boris not JRM candidate.

Final battle between Javid and Hunt.

There's a reason why Boris Johnson's supporters are trying to get the Tory leadership rules changed.

They know the MPs can veto Boris.

FTFY - I really can't see 80+ MPs gambling on Boris as leader...

He's got two and a half years to go.

It would probably take two years to bring charges.

It will take several months to even frame them should the AG do so.

I think he will survive this term but I think it's unlikely he'll be re-elected even if nominated.

I thought Javid was hoping to be the not Boris candidate, are there really enough to ensure both he and Hunt get through and Boris does not?

For aficionados of bad history, Ken Livingstone has written an article especially for RT, with the comical final line, "Always be careful about what you believe."

Apart from the usual Russian line on Crimea and MH17, he tells us that all the politicians involved in the Suez crisis "were dead long before the truth emerged"...

I appear to be in the opposite camp on this one. I think (fear) he will serve three terms.

All good things must come to an end. It’s time for this franchise to die, and be fondly remembered.
It's because Boyle was probably recruited by Sony on the assumption that they would win the rights auction. Now that they haven't the winner may want to take a different direction than SPE has with Bond over the last few entries.

    Hmmm.

He would have to amend the US constitution in under six years. He would have to do it without a grandfather clause.

The record for such an amendment to be passed is 203 years. Admittedly some have passed in a few months but they have been uncontroversial ones (e.g. The Presidential succession). Two term limits took four years.

I don't see how he gets supermajorities in congress and a supermajority among state legislatures in the timeframe needed.

That's also not including if he is re-elected he'll be 79 at the end of his second term and his program is already frayed with his popularity slipping.
