A typically trenchant and thought-provoking piece from Antifrank for which, as always, many thanks.
I never thought of UKIP as a right-wing party - apart from their immigration stance, in a host of other areas, they seemed quite on the Left as regards spending public money.
Indeed, where is the Right now ? Economically, they are absent - the Conservatives used to be the party of low tax and the small state but that has all been thrown away by the interventionist tax-and-spend May and while Corbyn's economic idiocy may legitimise it somewhat, the truth is May and Hammond's economics and spending aren't far removed from Blair and Brown's and it seems we will all pay more tax to fund the NHS in the future.
So equivalence, for the non-financial sector. Dear god help us.
It is the worst of everything, Theresa May is absolutely useless. Remainer Robbins has clearly led this up the garden path and is now delivering the worst possible deal to try and reverse Brexit. Time to get him out.
I suspect there is a H/C majority for what T. May is seeking - there certainly is noe for no deal or hard Brexit.

I've been verbally abused by a group of white racists and by a group of black racists, on the same evening, for the 'crime' of going out with a black girl.
But I'm white and voted for Brexit so it probably doesn't count. In fact, I probably deserve it.
It certainly does count and no one ever deserves it. But you know that really.
There is a certain arrogance in assuming such people must be Remain supporters though.
"Ask yourselves: what happens when the country sees you’ve simultaneously a) ‘handed over tens of billions for f**k all’ as they’ll say in focus groups (which the UK had no liability to pay), b) failed to do anything about unskilled immigration, c) persecuted the high skilled immigrants, such as scientists, who the public wants you to be MORE welcoming to, and d) failed to deliver on the nation’s Number One priority — funding for the NHS which is about to have a very high profile anniversary? And what happens if May staggers to 30 March 2019 and, as Barwell is floating with some of you, they then dig in to fight the 2022 campaign?
If you think that babble about ‘the complexity of the Irish border / the Union / peace’ will get you all off the hook, you must be listening to the same people who ran the 2017 campaign. It won’t. The public, when they tune back in at some point, will consider any argument based on Ireland as such obvious bullshit you must be lying. Given they already think you lie about everything, it won’t be a stretch."
"Yes it’s true that May, Hammond, Heywood and Robbins are Remain and have screwed it up but you’re deluded if you think you’ll be able to blame the debacle just on them. Whitehall is better at the blame game than you are, officials are completely dominant in this government, ministers have chosen to put Heywood/Robbins in charge, and YOU will get most of the blame from the public."

Is there one with the electorate ?
Abject surrender and payments of billions just as we win the world cup ?
It's also interesting tactically that this has all been leaked today so the Chequers meeting will be against the backdrop of huge anger among the hardcore Brexiteers and the Tory press.
I can't help but feel the real strategy is to throw Northern Ireland under a bus. Clearly the will isn't there right now but if the deal is bad enough?
Yes, I get what your saying. We don't want these people either, do we? Bloody Australians!
I'd have no issue deporting Rolf.
Oh, I see, By "these people" you meant paedophiles, not Muslims! My mistake. But why would anyone claim it was racist not to want paedophiles in the country? Who is claiming this?
Those who deny the existence of Muslim rape gangs.
They don't deny it, they just continually downplay it, make stupid comparisons to pretend it's not a problem (Jimmy Savile) and call anyone trying to draw attention to it racist.

If you seriously want another referendum go for it. I'd be happy for a vote to Remain if those who voted for Brexit want a second vote.
A briefing from a British Brussels-based animal welfare lobbyist with good sources on both negotiating teams says:
1. HMG will be going for a 'Max Fac +++' option tomorrow. This is nothing more than a dialectical 'solution' to the Irish border, mixing the original 'Maximum Facilitation' model favoured by some in the Cabinet, plus the 'customs partnership model' favoured by others. Both schemes have been rejected by Brussels on at least two occasions. 2. HMG is lobbying heavily for the Commission not to reject this proposal out of hand - at least not immediately... 3. The Commission plans on doing so, and Barnier said privately that it will mark the turning point for the EU27 if this is the UK proposal, when the EU's baseline assumption will be for no deal and that they will begin to plan for such in earnest as the most likely outcome, and 4. Expect at least 2 Ministerial resignations. ----- Personally, my money is still on fudge winning the day, but it does sound pretty dicey.
If this is right, and also the report that No 10 showed the plans to Berlin before DExEU, then Davis ought to resign this afternoon. He probably won't.
On the one hand, May has shown some backbone by finally picking a side. On the other, she's picked the wrong one.
Instant prediction: if the 'deal' being 'offered' is accurately reported, then it's nothing more than signing up to virtually Brussels' entire policy and abandoning all of Britain's red lines. I don't see how this doesn't end up with resignations and a leadership challenge* if May insists on sticking to it.

I meant at a General Election - the next one whenever that is.
I think May is going down - either when Con MPs rip up this deal - or when the EU overplays its hand and dismisses it.
WTO with an extra £39Bn to spend on incentives for business to invest via tax cuts may be on the cards.

* By which I mean a VoNC.
The only policy the Tory party will be able to unite behind is to look for a dignified exit from Brexit. It doesn't matter who the leader is.

Not if this is what is being proposed. If it was a time limited proposal then I think she'd just about hang on, given that it's being pitched as a treaty obligation there is not much chance of her holding out. Even the moderate Tory MPs will be unhappy with it.

Leavers are of course split over which of the red lines, if we can't have them all, are deemed the most important. Personally I believe the ability to sign foreign trade deals is more important than ending FOM. Which is why the EEA option is better than this ghastly dalliance with the Customs Union. TM is probably hoping to keep the FOM red line and hope that will keep enough support with her to defeat the Whig element in the party
Well done. Have you earned a few quid? Enough to buy a speedboat?
Yep, this is my second exit in five years, as we folded into Globe a while back. I am (was) a minority shareholder, but now sorted for life. It's a wonderful feeling. Not sure about a speedboat. I kind of like the idea of a place by the sea, though. Somewhere in Dorset or Devon.

Thanks. Might be able to afford a season ticket now ;-)
Stupidly I have deferred mine, when they asked me if I wanted to take it this year I was planning on staying in Switzerland for another year. In the end my partner forced the issue and we're back in London permanently and I don't get another chance to get a season ticket until next year.

Congratulations. Whilst we have differed on politics, I have never had any doubt that you are utterly professional in your work. A well-deserved payday.
Now, can I have some money?
I suppose the big question is whether you retire, or whether you start a new endeavour.
Interesting. I think I’m going to switch off the internet for a couple of days and follow events at Silverstone and in Russia instead!
Much as I love the company here, I'm just going to switch off PB until this washes out. Strange how I can avoid British politics altogether and still be on the web provided I don't come here.

No, she loses the VoNC whenever it's called simply because she has to be replaced before 2022 and if she wins a VoNC, it becomes far harder to replace her later. But if she proposed and stuck to a Brussels-satellite solution, she'd lose a vote on that alone.

That's just a measure of the irrelevance of Brexit to the wider world.
Glancing at Twitter, I wonder if May's intention is a second referendum with the choice being what seems to be (only glanced, so I could be wrong) a craven, subservient vassal state deal, or remaining.

Schoolboy error, sir!!
Indeed. Hopefully next year I'll be able to get the South stand, it's going to be amazing this year. Hopefully I'll be able to get a few matches in via the ticket exchange.

I think it would be her option vs no deal. I don't think she would be stupid enough to put remain back on the agenda.
"But instead of adopting the definition as agreed by all these bodies, Labour has excised the parts which relate to Israel and how criticism of Israel can be antisemitic."

It will be the deal or Remain, and the key Brexit campaigners from last time will back Remain.

If you have sufficient hobbies/interests to keep you busy and enough money to fund them then I can highly recommend retirement - it's very liberating.

The Tory party would split if she proposed that and we would be out of power for a generation, perhaps longer. As ever, your hopes and dreams bear no resemblance to reality.

Why wouldn't she? I assume you are part of the Boris "fuck business" tendency.
Mr. Glenn/Mr. Max, if we leave, returning has some big obstacles, not least the single currency, Schengen etc. Far easier for those of an EU-phile tendency to try and keep us in now.

Because the party would never wear it. I'm sure to a Lib Dem it looks like a fantastic idea, to a Tory it looks like the death of the party.

I’ll probably end up having to leave the job which is an arse.
They are great for the work life balance and that I am a single parent.
The fact they pay me well above the market rate is neither here nor there. Ahem.

At least I’ll be able to say ‘Ich bin ein Frankfurter’
