    Some sad news to report.

I've just read that Mark Senior has died.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned.

RIP Indeed. I had some sparrings with him but he was a knowledgeable poster and a committed Liberal and I send my condolences to his family
There was another prominent LibDem, SES I think he was called, who died in 2009.

On the whole we've done pretty well healthwise.
True but inevitably none of us are immortal (except perhaps JackW), a reminder that however heated the arguments on here to keep things in perspective
I hate to sound morbid, but do we know that JackW is OK? He hasn't visited the site in months and I know he's had health problems.

Sad news about Mark Senior. Slightly ironic to reflect his last ever post was celebrating your defeat in the Hemnall council by-election, where he described you as 'our very own HYUFD'!
JackW's passing would be reported in the national press
Who would know that "Deceased Person" = Jack W though?
I will tell you if you want
Oh you know then? Yeah that would be nice thx. Better PM me though. ;)
    Charles is JackW confirmed. :o
Suspect it would be tricky to inform Gin of my own death
    That's what I said. ;)

On Mark Senior: can I add my condolences. A long-time stalwart of the site: always bafflingly well-informed, always worth reading. A highlky partisan Lib Dem - but can the word 'partisan' be applied to someone with such a love of, and adherence to, the dry statistics? I will miss him. I think he is worthy of a thread - perhaps illustrated by the picture of him about to be hit over the head with a chair that he supplied when he won a competition back around 2007?

    I agree.
I agree that at some point in the near future, perhaps when Mike is back, there should be a thread dedicated to Mark. It doesn't have to be about him specifically but could be about something close to his heart such as the possibility of a Lib Dem revival.

    PS on Uber

I just spoke with my Corbyn-voting wife (age 22) who really likes Khan (he was her MP in Tooting as a child); she also uses Uber all the time: for her it is a total Godsend.

Right now she is volunteering on a farm in Sussex so she hadn't heard the news. She is bewildered - and horrified.

This will really hit Khan's base.

Your married? To a 22 year old? :open_mouth:
    Er, yeah
I miss all the gossip around here... :D
She's also exceptionally beautiful. If I say so myself. And I do.

    She's PHWOOOOARRRR

She will also leave me within 18 months, I suspect. But at least I will be able to say, on my deathbed: my only marriage was to a truly dropdead gorgeous young woman.

    There are inferior fates.
I am curious at to why volunteer on a farm. Surely there are lots of jobs going?

This will all blow over. Khan is and will remain extremely popular. This is London we are talking about - Tories haven't got a chance in hell.

In fact, look forward to the next general election where most of the remaining Tory MPs in London have a real battle to keep their seat. The biggest Tory tw*t of all, the moron Boris Johnson will surely be ejected.
Depends if Uber is actually banned (which I severely doubt). If not, the damage will be limited (but there will be damage, still)

If Uber really is abolished, and nothing swiftly replaces it, he will lose 100,000s of votes.
Yep. Comments from those who don't live or work in London are hilarious. The idea that non UBER drivers are all wonderful saints is hilarious. Almost everyone I know has a bad black cab experience - whilst all my mates love Uber. The only time sometime took my uber I was swiftly reimbursed.
I've never had a racist rant from an UBER driver. They are incredibly polite, they also get out of the car and load your luggage, they call you Sir or Madam. Because they know they need your good opinion on the app.

I have a soft spot for London black cab drivers, and I feel very sorry for them facing the digital revolution (already faced by journalists) but Jesus I've had some shite experiences in London's famous cabs.

I recall one guy who ranted about blacks, Muslims, Jews, Scots, Belgians, and then actually ran out of people to hate, went all quiet for a moment, and then sparked up again and said "But you know who I REALLY hate? PEOPLE WHO TAKE TRAINS".
Surely racist rants are part of the service.
I recognise all of what SeanT says.

I hate to admit it, but I've had some poor black cab experiences, with rude, self-entitled aggressive drivers who overcharge and, inexplicably, take nothing but cash.

I want to make her a TV star. She's very good on screen, funny and pretty, and knows loads about organic food AND astrology. I want her to be THE PAGAN CHEF

Did we ever find out why this speech had to be in Florence?

Well she wouldn't dare deliver this speech in the UK would she?

Her speech to the Tory Conference will be fun...
She should be OK now - Ken Clarke and Boris on same page
But are the leave bigwigs of her backbenchers on the same page ?
You cannot please all the people all the time and some will be unhappy.

However I think that we may have seen the avoidance of a hard Brexit and a Brexit that could command a majority view

I am hoping that today is the start of something. May should be pleased with herself today. She could just have broken free from the fundamentalists on the Tory right and neutered Boris in doing so. He is now tied into the process that May has set out. That means the transition - if it happens - and the final deal. What has to happen now, of course, is Davis putting detail onto the concessions that May has made.
She did well on the biggest speech of her career. Hope this is a big moment in the Brexit process
After 5 minutes I flung myself down the stairs in despair. Were we listening to the same speech.
Big G is May's biggest fanboi!
You really are silly - read my comments and you will see my reservations but there is a consensus that she did perform above expectations today
How low the bar was! Even Cameron would have walked beneath it.

It's probably just as well that Saddiq Khan isn't facing election anytime soon as he would be screwed. People are properly hopping mad about the Uber decision. Inside the M25 it seems to be a hotter issue than Brexit.

Sorry to hear about Mark Senior passing away. He was infuriating at times, but very rarely rude and he certainly knew his onions.

Ha, ha. Japan is fantastic - definitely worth the money. And it's not that expensive these days. You can get bullet train travel passes, the hotels are manageable outside the real top tier and food and drink is reasonable if you limit the trips to high end sushi places.

Those of us who were lurking/posting here in the 2005 election well remember the very funny banter between Mark Senior and the somewhat deluded Rik W (Richard Willis), who was the Tory candidate in Sutton & Cheam and seemed to be convinced that he was heading for a landslide win. In one of Mark's last posts, in this year's GE campaign, he still couldn't resist going on about how he proved Rik W wrong (called him a "pea brain" IIRC). Mark was one of the breed of "Winning Here" Lib Dems, who seemed ubiquitous not so long ago, but as someone posted upthread, seem to be diminishing fast now. I'm sure we'll all miss his informed contributions.

Incidentally, Rik W / Richard Willis was jailed a few months ago for child porn offences.

Startled to hear about Rik Willis. He seemed an amiable chap if a slightly naive guy (a Tory MP's aide, IIRC?). Basically, I guess, one can never tell from online political chat about that kind of thing.

    Exactly right.

Sadiq Khan may have just blown up his political career.
Plenty of black cabbies here in Epping though who will not be complaining

The Knowleand blacksmiths, and coal miners), is happening to cabbies. So the world turns.

Not sure if it has improved, but I am still sympathetic to the cab drivers. Outside of London minicabs are generally fine, but in London I always use black cabs.
Do you even knowof choice, these days. They are useful if you are wearing a top hat which you do not wish to remove, though.
Happy to be an idiot and stick with credible minicab companies and black cabs. I do know how uber works, thanks. I would consider using it in certain circumstances, ie when I am by myself . But overall, I am totally indifferent to the ban on UBER. I use cabs in London maybe 4 times a year. Doesn't affect me. I dont care. From my point of view having unlimited black cabs at the station is great. You can put the buggy and the child straight in to the cab and get to where you are going. I'm not interested in f**king around waiting for some app to work while the kid is screaming and my wife is moaning at me.

lol. The reason you have unlimited black cabs at the station is coz they are desperate for the fares. Because of Uber. Pre-Uber, cabbies would pick and choose their fares. "Nah, mate, I don't go sahf of the river"

As for the other guff, you clearly don't live in London and you've no idea how Uber transforms things so your opinion is worthless.
nah mate, I do understand it. More than you think. I don't want to be driven around London by an indentured servant class driving leased 2005 toyota priuses. It feels wrong. Dont think there is anything to celebrate about it, even if it has transformed things for you and made life easier for millionaires. Bring on the high tax rates. Lets get Corbyn in. In the meantime, I stick with Black cabs. Even though I am a TRAITOR REMAINER FOOL ETC. I DONT CARE.

If you want to stick with black cabs, that's fine: it's your choice, as long as enough other people are happy to support that model. But I don't see why others should be stopped from using Uber, assuming that they can sort out their regulatory issues, if they prefer that.

Uber, making a virtue of the market, not only delivers better, cheaper service for the customer but also provides good entry-level jobs for the workforce. The only ones losing out are those who think that the state entitles them to a living doing a job that relies on outdated skills.
  • Can I also add my name to the expressions of condolence for Mark. As with many on here, I didn't agree with him on quite a lot but you knew where he was coming from and he knew his stuff. I can't fault him for his perpetual optimism about Lib Dem prospects: if you can't believe in the future success of your cause, what's the point?

Just tuning in now. So sorry to hear about Mark. The greatest thing about PB is that you can learn the viewpoints of others whom you probably would never meet otherwise. What a loss to have no more of Mark's contributions. RIP.

I'll be able to say that too:
I got married the same year, and Mrs Fox in a similar dress! My wedding photos look very similar.

Looks like you did well there. Congratulations

    And to you!

In a softer moment, I suggested that Japan is a good destination for a pearl anniversary. Sounds expensive but worth it.

Her best feature is her short memory. I am often in the doghouse, but always let out quickly.
    Here's my wife.

    I hope that works.

    Yeah. Young.

    Stay healthy!!

I should add that she has officially allowed me to say and post what I like on PB about Brexit,
sex, Corbyn, her, Uber, whatever ("who cares, it's just a bunch of old men"), but she is severely disapproving of my entire persona on Twitter ("you sound like a grumpy old twat").

I have found this difficult to rebut.
Healthy self-awareness at least. Must be worth some points.

I don't think he would be. I have had countless conversations with Labour voting Londoners who are furious with the lack of affordable housing. It doesn't stop them voting for a party who has previously (and still is) in favour of uncontrolled immigration.

I know that signing petitions is easy but all the same, in less than a day, 414,065 people have signed the change.org petition on the Uber decision. The decision has energised people. Whether it'll last I very much doubt (not least because I don't ever expect Uber to stop operating in London). All the same, it shows the risks being run.

It's not dyed in the wool, Labour voting Londoners who are the issue. It's relatively apolitical types who voted Ken, Boris, and Sadiq because they reckoned them good sorts with Londoners' interests at heart.

PBers routinely forget that swing voters are just that - not terribly political people who don't have strong ties and show voting patterns that seem pretty eccentric to those who follow it all more closely.

Brexit is and will be calamity until it is binned.
Dream on. We are leaving. If you want to remain an EU citizen then the only way will be for you to move to another country.
So many errors in such a short post. Unfortunately it remains possible that the disaster called Brexit may happen, but it's by no means a certainty. And it's a screaming necessity in sensible opinion that a way will be found to call it off. If it were to happen, for a British citizen to have a grandparent born in Ireland would in most cases be sufficient for them to claim Irish and therefore EU citizenship. Moving to an rEU country would be unlikely to be sufficient. (Do you think rEU citizens moving to Britain would get British citizenship?)

    (A few hours late but)

I have been commemorating Harry Patch Day, the 100th anniversary of the date on which Harry Patch (1898-2009) was seriously injured by a piece of shrapnel, and his three colleagues were killed by the explosion. For the rest of his life, Harry Patch commemorated 22nd September as his own Remembrance Day, rather than 11th November.

He usually referred to them by their nicknames: Jack, Jilly & Maudy. But in real life they were:

Private Ernest Cullingford, no. 28783, 7th Batallion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry
Private James Forrest, no. 34500, 7th Batallion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, age 20
Private Alfred Moyses, no. 28328, 7th Batallion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, age 27

One of view the great things about this site is rubbing shoulders with people who have contributed to political life in various ways and can comment from a position of experience.I think the more illustrious on here do tend to know who each other are, but somehow that doesn't weaken the democratisation this site provides to a genuinely unknown armchair enthusiast like myself. And the experience and knowledgeability on here challenges the rest of us to try and avoid the most basic level of arrant nonsense (a higher level of arrant nonsense is, of course, fine).

So it is sad to hear of view Mark Senior's passing, he is not someone I recall particularly crossing swords with in the last couple of years on this site, but I have certainly made use of UK Polling Report and my recollection is that he did engage positively with one or two of my efforts at numerology along the way. RIP.
