But what about the kids that don't make it into public schools? What about them?
That's where the state steps in, Mrs May should focus her efforts on continuing the excellent works of Gove and Morgan.
Even Mrs Thatcher in her infinite wisdom as Education Secretary closed or merged grammar schools at a level not seen before or after, and didn't open a single new grammar as Prime Minister.
It's looking like a comprehensive defeat & he'll resign.
Apart from the German speaking Trentino Alto Adige and possibly Tuscany, he has lost everywhere.
Actually, Germans are only a majority in South Tyrol, the northern half of Trentino Alto-Adige. Italians are the overwhelming majority in Trento, the southern half. In fact, the two halves of Trentino Alto-Adige are de facto regions in their own right.

She knew grammars don't work for all.
And the Comprehensive system works for almost nobody. It is comprehensively bad.

Public schools shaft the poor, because of the fees!
I know this will tread on a few toes - but is there really any point to arts GCSE and A levels. It would be a lot easier on children if they were just relegated to general knowledge.

True, but look at the results from the German speaking area and the Italian speaking area!

I didn't go for art at GCSE, seemed a hard subject.
Though that probably tells you more about me than the system !

Take it up with Maggie, she was a scientist, she saw the evidence, and knew what works.

Well she was wrong about a lot of things including the EU for much of her career until she saw the light. It is really no surprise to find she was wrong about grammar schools as well.

The interesting question is whether or not Renzi resigns at his news conference due in 40 minutes our time
This question comes from sheer ignorance.
If he wasn't elected, why would he resign?
(Good evening, everyone)
His opponents are asking for his resignation - are you saying they are ignorant
No, the ignorance is mine.
You are not in anyway ignorant - we can all make the odd mistake
Thank you, but I thought Mr Renzi was an EU-political appointee (therefore not subject to ballot-box dismissal) and I didn't know he had said he would resign.

I sympathise - it is difficult to keep up sometimes......

Typical from supporters of grammar schools, no facts, just insults.

Grammars, Free at the point of use? Yes! Public schools, Shedloads of fees? Yes! TSE = Pompous C**t? Yes!
Say what you like about Dave, but his resignation speech was concise.
Take note Matteo Renzi
Perhaps Davide Camerone could be drafted in to take over?
Dave's enjoying his retirement
Is he going to go back into politics? I'm sure May would give him a peerage.
Nope, he's done with politics.
He might do a Lord Home, and be Foreign Secretary when George Osborne becomes PM.
It would be a shame for young pms to be done with public service when they'll be around so long. I believe the governor of California was both the youngest in 100 years and the oldest, such was the gaps in his terms.

Isn't 70 a bit old for Foreign Secretary?
Though with increasing retirement age, possibly not.....
If a man, presumably with help, can be a dictator in his 90s, no reasonpeople in their 70s couldn't do tough jobs like that. Truly, Mugabe is an inspiration, I think.
Italian Banks are going to take a bath tomorrow morning. There will be a great strain on the whole Euro system.
They are already down 95% even before the referendum.
The Euro has been an unmitigated disaster for Italy, probably more than for any single other country. There are, as Greece found, no easy answers but things cannot go on like this.

6.165 polling places out of 61.551 reported so far
No at 59%
Yes ahead only in Tuscany and Bozen/Trento so far.
Even Mrs Thatcher in her infinite wisdom as Education Secretary closed or merged grammar schools at a level not seen before or after, and didn't open a single new grammar as Prime Minister.

Of the two traditionally socialist areas he will win Tuscany, there is more than enough votes to come from Siena.
Emilia-Romagna though will be tough.
Not surprising that the austrians of Bozen have voted differently that the rest of Italy.
Bolzano is 62.4 % SI; Trento is 52.8 % NO
Though that probably tells you more about me than the system !
The PD bosses wanted Renzi out because they didn't like Merkel calling the shots in their party, it was a vote loser.

A ceremonial President in Austria, or
A constitutional referendum in Italy?
I'm sure the Guardian is leading with the former because the likely outcome came through first.......

Another brick through the window......
The Liberal fightback narrative lasted as long as the Battle of the Bulge.
Populism is still marching.

We'll be able to calculate turnout in this one !
But! But! But!
The President of Austria.......
(See the Grauniad Front Page....)
Didn't help him this time.
