What kind of positive spin are they putting on it? (I can think of numerous avenues they'd be prepared to go down, but I'm sure even I'd be surprised by their ruthlessness.)

Angela Eagle about to prove that Don Quixote didn't have a monopoly on tilting at windmills.

If nothing else, it's going to make writing PB thread headers a bit easier. This year has just been a phenomenon politically. It's like being a Roman in the 470s.

Tbf it is mixed, with as many against as for. Most of the pro-AL spin argues that this is all an establishment plot, a liberal media storm in a teacup, a minor peccadillo compared to May's imminent sell-out to the remainers, or evidence of AL's deep adherence to conservative family values.

That's not good for Leadsom on UKIPhome. If she doesn't have mostly good comments or comments in favour there then she is in trouble.

One wonders how negotiations between Prime Minister Leadsom and the childless Chancellor of Germany might go. The diplomatic exchanges would be a treat to listen to.

And the question of Scottish independence with the equally childless Sturgeon?

Any chance of Corbyn going off on one about the childless Eagle, do you think?

Back on topic, The Guardian seems to think Eagle will be launching her campaign on Monday. It's a brutal business, writing these threads.

    http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jul/09/jeremy-corbyn-set-for-leadership-challenge-after-peace-talks-fail

Two very interesting snippets from that Watson statement:

“The Labour party was founded with the explicit aim of pursuing the parliamentary path to socialism. Every Labour leader needs to command the support of their MPs in the parliamentary Labour party, as well as party members, in order to achieve that. It is clear to all that Jeremy has lost the support of the PLP with little prospect of regaining it.”
“I felt we made significant progress during those talks, which were designed to find a solution to the impasse the party finds itself in. It is my strong belief that those discussions could have formed a basis for further talks with union representatives.
“However, since the talks began, Jeremy has publicly declared his intention to continue as leader come what may. This means there is no realistic prospect of reaching a compromise that satisfies the majority of colleagues in the PLP.”

The party leader needs to enjoy the support of MPs as well as the members; the unions were looking for a resolution, Corbyn was not.

I wonder if this means that Watson has the support of at least some unions for the position that Corby needs to get MP nominations before he can stand for re-election. If he has, that's significant as it may well deliver a majority on the NEC for such a position. And barring legal action, that means Corbyn would need 50 MPs and MEPs in order to stand again. Probably wishful thinking, but you never know.

    From The Times article:

"The single market is no longer relevant to the discussion....We start with zero tariffs and carry on as before." Surely the EU would impose tariffs? "Why would they do that?"
There is no room for negotiation on free movement in her view.

The more I think about it I think its dark arts from Leadsom. She has made the point she wanted to about Mrs May being childless. Its despicable but I feel sure she intended this.

Frankly she should never be allowed anywhere near No 10.

Yes, she's certainly enthused the hard-right Tory/Kipper contingent on here, who aren't far short of shouting 'Go Girl!' But this is straight out of the Trump playbook - if you can get the powers that be into a flap, then you must be doing something right, and the alienated will love you for it. This might work out very well for her.
The problem for Leadsom, I think, is that the electorate deciding party leadership is middle class and not alienated. It's different from the EUref and the next general election

I doubt such a vote will enamour the rebellious Labour MPs to the membership. It could almost be designed to maximise the chances of a Jeremy Corbyn leadership victory.

"Let the bastard die," doesn't sound that sympathetic.

True story: in 2005, was flying home from Calgary after a conference in Banff, Alberta. Mid-way during flight, one of the attendants comes over and asks, "Are you a doctor? We got a passenger with chest pains."

I thought - oh shit, that'll teach me to put "dr" when buying my ticket! Luckily they did find someone else who was medically qualified, so the patient was OK in the end.
It certainly used to be the case that pharmacists with PhD’were specifically instructed NOT to use the title anywhere where the public might become confused.
It is also only a fanny that would do it in any case, bit like those losers that get knighted and then have sycophants calling them Sir, cringeworthy.
Ive got more letters after my name than in it - including my middle name - but rarely use them even at work.

And it was only three years at University on unpaid leave from work and back to work during the holidays. The other four were privately funded by my employer as day release to get an ONC and HNC but you dont get letters for that.
Malcolm, when you are writing humour, do you think in the Doric or in Gaelic? In either case, there’s something lacking in the translation!

I had a guy for a job interview ( internal company job ), he had multiple degrees and super clever. he had gone to uni in Scotland and loved climbing so had kept taking courses till he got chucked out at the 10 year maximum point, he said he was devastated at the time.

Oh dear - and dosent mean so much now since Major turned the polytechnics into universitites and then Blair decided half tbe population should go.

It was about 10-20% when I went in the late 80s. Even then tbere were guys doing Phds who seemed to be trying to avoid the rigours of the real world for as long as possible.

It only takes seven years at most to get a Phd via batchelors and masters. What was he doing the other three?
Scottish Undergrad degree is 4 years, so 4 and 4 (if he did the PhD fulltime) would be 8.

He could have done and undergrad, a couple of Masters and then a Phd.

I am not sure Trident is that emblematic. But it does bring the unions into play.

Of course, Corbyn is still favourite to win a leadership battle and that will then split the party. But there are a few straws in the wind now:

First - the Tories have changed the political landscape by abandoning their economic and fiscal policy.

Second - the main unions are very pro-Trident.

Third - the entire future of the Labour party is now in play.

Not all Labour members - even the Corbyn backers - are members of Momentum. When push comes to shove are they prepared to kill the party to keep Corbyn in office? Probably. But I don't think it is guaranteed.

Yes. 6 years of not putting her head over the parapet. That's the sum total. It's risible.
If only a politician was brilliant enough to campaign on the basis that they would spend five years heading off all potential crises and otherwise would keep out of our way and let people get on with their lives without undue meddling (except reading our emails now and again)!

That would be perfect (except the bit about the emails).
