Rachel Reeves considering rent freeze to limit Iran war fallout
Exclusive: Sources say chancellor is examining exceptional measures to protect household budgets
Rachel Reeves is considering imposing a one-year rent freeze on private sector homes amid growing alarm in government about the impact of the Iran war on voters’ budgets.
Landlords in England would be banned from raising rents for a limited period of time under the proposals, which are being debated within government as part of a major cost of living package to be launched in the coming weeks.
The measure would be a significant reversal from the chancellor, who has resisted including rent controls in the government’s renters’ rights reforms, which come into force on Friday.
But sources informed of the government discussions say ministers are now sufficiently worried about what the conflict in Iran will mean for mortgages and household budgets that they are willing to consider exceptional measures.
A reliable source tells me Kemi is safe from a vote of no confidence if the locals are worse than feared, if there is one, she'll lose, but there's no appetite for one.
What will trigger a VONC is if she tries and spins bad results as an excellent performance.
So it appears that the appointment of Lord Mandelson wasn’t the worst job given out by Starmer.
The appointment of Lord Hermer is considerably worse.
Most of us are only realising today, that Hermer, Starmer, and Phil Shiner, were the three biggest advocates of lawsuits against British soldiers, on evidence that was at best obtained through coercion, and at worst was simply fabricated.
Yes. Hermer and maybe Starmer will be lucky to avoid prosecution if a proper right wing government comes to power. And if they are convicted they need to do very serious time
You sound like 'Lucky' and Aspers' and the gang chuntering about Harold Wilson over their mediocre claret and lamb chops in a 70s Mayfair gaming club.
That’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me. Bless
When you read the evidence from Ian Collard, the head of security at the foreign office, it begs an overwhelming question - why did Keir Starmer sack Sir Olly Robbins?
Starmer said he sacked him for failing to inform him of the fact that Mandelson had failed to pass UK Security Vetting
But Robbins told MPs he didn’t know this. He says he was told it was a borderline case and decided to grant Mandelson developed vetting with appropriate mitigations in place
Specifically never saw the box ticked by UKSV explicitly warning against appointing Mandelson.
His argument was twofold: 1) He couldn’t tell the PM something he didn’t know and 2) that the PM had misunderstood the vetting process. The role of UKSV was advisory, and the decision rested with him and the foreign office security team
Ian Collard, the former head of the foreign office security team, has tonight corroborated his entire account. He said he told him that it was a borderline case. That he didn’t see the ticked box recommending against Mandelson’s appointment either. And that he also felt under pressure
We expect Sir Philip Barton, Robbins’s predecessor, to corroborate his account re pressure tomorrow
So again, why did Starmer sack Robbins? He couldn’t tell him something he didn’t not know and had not seen
How can the head of foreign office security not see the ticked red box as he should have access to all the info ?
It seems that everyone seems to be avoiding seeing anything . His department are the ones that made the borderline decision .
Yep, effectively he was sacked for not reading the UKSV summary before granting vetting.
So it appears that the appointment of Lord Mandelson wasn’t the worst job given out by Starmer.

You have this bizarre obsession with prosecuting people for "crimes", without actually specifying what the crime you think they've committed is.
Are you OK with Farage being prosecuted by a left wing government if things don't go swimmingly when Reform is in charge?

One aspect I think could come to pass is full Labour wipeouts where they get no seats in councils they are defending. The prediction sites suggest Labour aren't leading anywhere in the all ups in Barnsley, Gateshead, South Tyneside, St Helens and Sunderland (which has already been mentioned in this context).
I think it's hard since one can imagine at least one Labour candidate in most of these places sneaking a second or third place, but the prospect is there and there are a selection of chances for this to happen.
It's not clear they will always hold even where they are slated for a couple of seats, so there is also a non negligible chance wipe outs could come from elsewhere.
A full wipeout looks unlikely anywhere where they are defending in London, although to footnote that there are places like Richmond already without any Labour representation.
There could also be wipeouts where Labour fail to defend any seats in by thirds elections and those could also be quite seismic, places such as Wigan and Tameside. Due to defections and the seats they are defending, Labour start the elections six short of a majority in Tameside, with 15 seats being defended, but I'm not sure where any of their wins are likely to come from. I'm pretty certain Tameside formally goes NOC this year.

It's something I am writing a piece on for this weekend whilst I am on my break.
