    Thanks for the header.

Do we have any US polling broken down by party and faction (ie MAGA, not MAGA for the GOP) on any questions around attitude to Putin / Zelensky, who started the war etc?

Yes, we have detailed polling from Pew from a few days ago, although possibly now out of date given the latest developments! https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/02/14/americans-views-of-the-war-in-ukraine-continue-to-differ-by-party/

You appear to be inside a shipping contained looking out into a warzone.

For no reason whatsoever except that it is the first place which came to mind when I saw the image, I'm going to go for: Turksih occupied North Cyprus.

The last day has been the worst polling day for Trump during his entire 2nd term.

-4 polls show his net approval rating underwater like The Little Mermaid.
-The 3 polls with a trend line show his ratings going down.
-His one time strength (the economy) is now a weakness.

Farage comes out in favour of Trump and kinda against Zelenskyy:

“Nigel Farage has just broken his silence and given his view on his friend Donald Trump's attacks on the Ukrainian president.
The Reform UK leader told GB News "you should always take everything Donald Trump says seriously" - but not "absolutely literally".
"Let's be clear - Zelenskyy is not a dictator," he said. "But it's only right and proper that Ukrainians have a timeline for elections."
He also rejected the notion the UK did not hold any elections during the Second World War, saying one was held in the summer of 1945.
Of course, that took place after Nazi Germany had surrendered to the allies, and victory in Europe had been achieved - although the war with Japan continued.
Both Keir Starmer and Boris Johnson made the point yesterday that it was perfectly reasonable for Ukraine not to hold elections during a war, citing that the UK hadn't during the Second World War.”

Specifically, I think it’s that path that runs near the canal to the new food court. Water Lane, is it called? I can’t remember, what with being repeatedly stabbed the last time I was there.

    More Farage:

“Farage also defended Trump's conduct so far, saying he promised to "bring Putin to the negotiating table", and "that is exactly what he's done".
"Is it right to try to seek a peace in a war that has now seen one million battle casualties? Yes," he said, and claimed European allies are upset because "they have shown themselves to be pretty irrelevant".
Later in the interview, Farage said: "Russia is to blame for the invasion - of that there is no doubt."
He said Ukraine "needs to get proper security guarantees", which he argued is a key element of any potential peace deal holding.”

    Ed Davey on Farage:

“Lib Dem Davey, the most vocal critic of Farage and Trump among the UK's political leaders, accused him of trying to "explain away" the "outrageous remarks" rather than "condemning them".
"Deeply disappointing but not at all surprising," he said, adding: "He sounds like a spokesman for Trump."

1 Considering there’s no chance Trump would defend us even if we forced Ukraine’s surrender, it’s better to defend ourselves with Ukraine than without it.

2 A US that cuts out EUROCOM and CENTCOM (see today’s WAPO) wouldn’t be able to defend us even if it wanted.

Trump has treated NATO abominably, with very little domestic opposition, and who knows what other rubbish he has planned. This will have long term consequences. I don't think most of America's traditional allies will trust it again for a very long time, irrespective of whether he's eventually succeeded by someone more palatable.

...The Nature paper marks peer-reviewed confirmation that Microsoft has not only been able to create Majorana particles, which help protect quantum information from random disturbance, but can also reliably measure that information from them using microwaves...

    Anyone read the paper ?

If eventually confirmed, the question of a Nobel would be something of a sideshow.

What are you looking at it is one of the few entrances to Mokkatam, the “City of Garbage” in Cairo, inhabited by a tribe of Coptic Christians known as the Zabbaleen

They live in houses basically made out of trash - which @Cookie spotted - and spend their lives recycling Cairo’s refuse, which they bring back to their illegal shanty town (in fairly central Cairo, carved out of old quarries) on donkey carts, daily. The women then spend the day sorting the trash and recycling it. The whole place is intense and insane and surrounded by hostile Muslim communities, hence the few roads in and metal barriers

They keep pigs which are allowed to roam free throughout the burb - doing what pigs SHOULD do, eating random crap - so the bacon they make is sublime. And it really is. I’ve had it many times, when I lived in Cairo for a few months it was known as the best bacon in the world

But it is a terrifying place. They drink and fight. So the people of the City of the Dead are scared to go there

It is also home to some weirdly ancient Bibilical or pre Biblical ruins

It’s amazing. I recommend it. I was there on assignment. The guy in the photo is a photographer friend carrying a bulky camera

IIRC it seems that they have created a few q-bits with this approach, which is different to the ones being pursued by other research teams, which shows that the idea works.

However, they are something like twenty years behind the other approaches right now - they claim to have made a few q-bits. Their competitors have chips with 80-100 q-bits.

/If/ Microsoft’s approach can be made to scale and /if/ once scaled the q-bits can be kept coherent then they will have a device that can do useful QC calculations.

Right now, no quantum computer has managed to factor a number larger than 21 without having it’s hand held by researchers who already know the right answer. QC has great promise and the theory is sound but the practical implementation of that theory has been very hard to scale.

The worst aspect of the last 2 Bonds was the bizarre sibling rivalry explanation for Blofeld and SPECTRE. It is a bit ironic that just at a time where malevolent billionaire oligarchs with ambitions really are a threat to the world that such a pathetic bit of plot was used.

If Bond is to revive then they need to get back to decent writing. Bond was a bit of a throwback even in his Fifties and Sixties heyday with his snobbery and chauvinism. That's just part of the character. Taking that out of him would be like making Arthur Daley a straight dealer.

A psychotic gangster rampaging across the continent at will is a very serious concern for us though.

If Putin gets to claim a victory then it won't be long before he's back to finish Ukraine off, and then he'll come after the Eastern flank of the EU.

Russians are basically animals. We need to figure out how to cage them.
Is the EU incapable of defending itself? If so, why is it our job to do it?

Maybe Amazon should just remake some of the old Bonds. Like Goldfinger.

In other news, Trump and Musk are intending to visit Fort Knox, to "check on the gold"
