Trump, even in the face of a natural disaster, continues with the lies and conspiracy theory, fomenting division.
    An utterly vile man.

Haake: Trump had been saying on Truth Social that he believes that Democrats have been intentionally denying aid to Republican parts of the state. I asked him what evidence he had to back that up, you can see what he said here

The problem with the U.S. media, right here.

CNN correspondent says Trump is taking Helene seriously and is offering a "message of unity."

Trump is claiming President Biden isn't taking Gov. Kemp's calls.

Kemp: "The president just called me yesterday afternoon…He just said, 'Hey, what do you need?' And I told him we got what we need…He offered that if there's other things we need, just to call him directly."

Turns out over 100 NIH-funded Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s research papers contain completely made up data, according to new allegations. Billions in funding and years of research now in serious doubt.

    https://www.science.org/content/article/research-misconduct-finding-neuroscientist-eliezer-masliah-papers-under-suspicion

That's well worth a read. His apparent fraud had nasty effects:

"Masliah’s work, for example, helped win a nod from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for clinical trials of an antibody called prasinezumab for Parkinson’s. Made by Prothena—a company backed by big money—the drug is intended to attack alpha-synuclein, whose build up in the brain has been linked to the condition’s debilitating physical and cognitive symptoms.

But in a trial of 316 Parkinson’s patients, reported in 2022 in The New England Journal of Medicine, prasinezumab showed no benefit compared with a placebo. And volunteers given infusions of the antibody suffered from far more side effects such as nausea and headaches than those in a placebo group who received sham infusions"

"A lorry has fallen 60 metres from a bridge on the M6 and landed overturned on the embankment below.

The driver of the vehicle is not believed to have suffered any life-threatening injuries, the force added."

I think somebody mentioned this earlier, but...Trump wants The Purge???

    https://nitter.poast.org/KamalaHQ/status/1840526130031317329#m

What he’s talking about, to be picky, is state violence rather than public violence, so more Kristallnacht than the Purge.

And just to show how far trans hatred has spread:

"Liz Truss claims “Underground transgender mafia” were plotting against her and brought her leadership to an end.
“They’re the ones really running this country.”"

    https://x.com/PoliticoForYou/status/1840723236499137012

As other have said, “Underground transgender mafia” would be a great band name.

    Good morning, everyone.

F1: the latter stages of the calendar are weird. Mid-season break is normal. Now we have another month off, then triple header, then more weeks off, then a triple header. Weird.

Just seen Lammy is calling for a ceasefire again.

What a joke this government is on this matter.

Purely playing for domestic audience, no interest in seeing Hamas and Hezbollah defeated whatsoever.

A ceasefire and Hamas and Hezbollah surviving intact serves nobodies interests and just guarantees its a matter of when, not if, the cycle of violence continues.

How the hell do you defeat an ideology? Bombing the fuck out of is like throwing a massive tank of gasoline over a fire.

Israel's actions are making its own people less safe, and much less safe.

The same way we defeated fascism as an ideology.

    Two-pronged assault, carrot and stick.

First defeat the enemy until they unconditionally surrender.

Then promote moderate forces within your former enemy and stuff their faces with gold so that people get rich and decide they have no interest or desire in going back to the old ways anymore.

Military victory, then Marshall Plan. That's how the hell you do it.
But the Israeli right have no interest in that plan. They’re fine with the first part, but want to follow it up with ethnic cleansing and annexation.
    Screw the Israeli "right"

Israel is a democracy and when peace is an option it has repeatedly voted for it.

Israel isn't the problem here. The problem is those who are not democracies led by theocratic dictators who have no desire for peace or democratic transfer of power.
Which party in Israel supports your plan? (Or would you vote for if you had a vote in Israel?)

It’s part of the plan by F1 to reduce their carbon footprint.

    I salute them.

President Biden on Donald Trump: “He's lying and the governor told him he was lying...the reason I get so angry about it, I don't care about what he says about me, but I care what he communicates to the people that are in need."

Speaking of healthcare, the UK is absolutely first rate for private health. I'm in the OneWelbeck centre right now and the consultant was able to pull in my MRI scans from 2021 and 2023 instantly, he rediagnosed them instantly and has come up with a hypothesis on why I'm feeling crummy. There's not many countries in the world where you can book an appointment with a globally recognised specialist consultant and get an appointment within three days.

The systems that they have in place should be standard for all patients and it's not as though it's incredibly difficult to achieve yet the NHS would take days to figure out where previous scan results lived etc...

My local GP surgery texted me recently about closing down for two days to do the upgrade from Windows XP. I'm hoping next time they print out a URL for me on a sheet of A4 rather than just email it to me that the upgrade was worth it.

Snark aside, this is one of the concrete areas where Google's AI work seems to be paying off. No idea if the NHS or wider bodies will accept it - but they are showing concrete results in improving diagnosis from top to bottom.
Top to bottom. Dandruff to colonoscopy.
The blurb for BoJo's biography, I noticed today, describes it as a "Soup to Nuts" account. I know he was born in Manhattan, but since when did we import that phrase? Pretty sure most readers won't know it.
I heard it used in the City quite a bit working there 20+ years ago.
Found IIRC in the writings of P G Wodehouse. Somewhere in Jeeves I think (though Jeeves himself would of course never use such a phrase).
Wodehouse spent most of his life in America, and much of it in Europe.

Helps that he started by asking Rachel Riley for all four from the top.

Mr. Eagles, it's part of F1's plan to have a stupid calendar.

Las Vegas and Qatar are back-to-back. That's an 18.5 hour flight plus around an 11 hour time zone difference.

    Ooops, apologies.

It says something about the contempt in which I hold Truss and the dingbat wing of the Conservative Party that I believed it.

    Lord Ashcroft having fun:

    "To @Keir_Starmer

As you know I’m updating your biography Red Knight to be released next Spring. It will address Labour’s manifesto and promises after 6 months in office. I am struggling to keep up with all the revelations and would ask you to pause for a few weeks to let me catch up.
    Thank you."

It’s all to do with the Vegas weekend. Next years calendar is more sane but there is a weeks gap between Baku and Singapore

Mr. eek, there's a rumour there was going to be another race in the mix so the gaps were less ridiculous (perhaps Japan in a different slot or yet another US race).

🔵 Rees-Mogg: Tories should step aside in 100 seats where Reform can win

    https://x.com/TelePolitics/status/1840814383993115039

That strategy, by the ex-MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, has two problems:

    (1) It permanently creates a party to the Right of the Conservatives, with whom they will constantly fight for votes.

    (2) In Remainia, it it allows the LibDems and Labour to paint the Conservatives and Reform as one and the same, which will worsen tactical voting against them.

My view is that the Conservative Party needs to extinguish Reform by (a) stealing their most popular policies, and (b) ensuring they don't get a significant local government base.
Well, yes, you're a bit smarter than most of them.

I almost instantly write-off anyone selling simple choices like going for Reform v Lib Dem voters or the Centre v the Right.

The Conservative Party needs to build a coalition that cuts across and takes from all.
    In short:
    * Work out what you believe in
    * Work out what the public want
    * Campaign on the overlap

What is it that the public want that the Conservatives are willing to sell them? What is it that the Conservatives want that the public are willing to buy?
