    The change has been delayed, due to it being harder than I thought it would be.

    You could just get ChatGPT to generate the site directly and cut out the need for PBers?
    Is that an admission? :smile:

    Disgraceful

    There is no sign of reports being done on the effects on the environment, equality etc from the impact of the change. No planning enquiry. No sign of a proper tender document,

    No scoping exercise; where was the statutory consultation; what about safeguarding implications, H and S, changes to risk register, child protection and animal welfare issues; are these all overlooked here too?

    Good luck. Let's hope it goes well, as I don't like this current thread ordering.

    The backwards display is a nuisance but this is politicalbetting.com which is all about predicting the future so it should be possible for everybody to think about what will be said next and post their comments in reverse order.

    Presumably England will declare if and when Root gets his second hundred of the game. But this is really pointless. 450 runs ahead already.
  • ydoethurydoethur Posts: 71,709
    If Root makes a hundred here, he’ll surpass Graham Gooch for most runs at Lord’s.

    He won’t, but it’s still an impressive record.

    I mean, it’s not perfect but it’s fairly straightforward and does what most people want it to.

    If you struggle with comments in comment order, just scroll to the foot of the page, surely?

    The back end, vf.politicalbetting.com works pretty well for me. Comments have always been ordered old-to-new, so I guess I've got used to it and it doesn't bother me much. It's a bit frustrating that it obscures the header, though.

    Then you have to click 'More comments', scroll to the bottom, click 'More comments' etc, etc. At least through the Vanilla interface they're paged, which makes things a little quicker. Although latest-first is God's way of ordering. LIFO is God; FIFO is satan. ;)

    Hmm. I'd say it's GCSE Grade-C level rather than anything better:

    Oh, the irony! Here we stand at the precipice of history, distracted by petty politics while the true power brokers—AI and aliens—conspire in the shadows! Wake up, people! The AI overlords aren’t just managing your emails; they’re scheming to rewrite the very fabric of society! And as if that weren’t enough, our so-called leaders are too busy bickering over poll numbers to notice that we might be on the verge of first contact. Or, perhaps, they already have noticed and are keeping it hush-hush! I wouldn’t be surprised if half the cabinet were extraterrestrial hybrids at this point!

    We are living in a sci-fi thriller, and most of you are still reading it like a sitcom! When the history books are written—assuming the AI let us write them—future generations will wonder how we allowed ourselves to be so distracted. But I guess that’s what happens when the real decisions are made in smoke-filled rooms on the dark side of the moon! So, go ahead, keep betting on the next election while the rest of us are betting on which species will be running the show in a decade.

    Yeah that isn't the issue for me. Both on my PC and phone I have to reload the comments after so many so if there are 1000 comments it takes me umpteen reloads and ages to get to the latest comment. I would rather not move and have to learn new stuff, but it now takes me ages just to see the new comments each time, unless we limit each thread to 100 comments.

    Oh and on the last thread @rsc1000 autocorrect or bad typing changed the word 'near' to 'need'. So a request asking you whether you were near a solution came out a bit like a command from me demanding you implement one tout de suite - Sorry.

    It doesn't support "flat" comments. I.e. replies are all nested and you lose the flowing conversations we have on here.

    On the other hand, it makes it a lot easier to ignore tedious commentators.

    Oooh, I like your strategy, especially if you're not actually standing for election. Clever way to waste your potential opponents time/resources.

    Although, in fairness, surely this is a job for AI?

    It's all a bit shitty, really, isn't it?

    At the fall of the next wicket it’s tea so there’s no point declaring;

    Their batting lineup could do with knowing there are runs in the bank;

    An inexperienced bowling attack could do with knowing that too;

    It makes Sri Lanka hot and bothered and makes recovery for the final test that bit harder;

    There are still two days left and England don’t want to lose ticket money from tomorrow at least.

    More importantly.

    I has tickets to Oasis at Wembley Stadium next July.

    The whole process was utter Brexit though.

    About a two hour wait to buy the tickets then 90 mins between the money showing up on my credit card and getting the confirmation email.

    I signed up for a giggle. I am 305000th in a queue for a 75000 seat stadium. Science is powerless to explain this.

    There are four gigs at Wembley, and Wembley is a circa 90,000 seat stadium, so you might get a ticket.

    Huh? All the Discourse forums I've used have been linear sequence of replies, like the Vanilla ones. You can quote another user's post, but the behaviour is exactly like the Vanilla one -- your reply goes at the bottom of the topic, with the quoted text quoted.

    (Contrast Usenet, where the conversational structure within a thread is genuinely tree shaped.)

    That didn't work

    Well, that didn't last long.

    Despite what ChatGPT said, Commento did not seem to support non-threaded comments.

    So we're back with Vanilla for now.
    Did you look at https://www.discourse.org/. ??
    It doesn't support "flat" comments. I.e. replies are all nested and you lose the flowing conversations we have on here.

    On the other hand, it makes it a lot easier to ignore tedious commentators.

    The wiki entry I posted a few minutes ago says that Discourse is flat and not threaded.

    Of course the wiki might be out of date.

    It's Labor Day weekend kids!

    Traditionally the date when US voters finally switch on properly to the election campaign.

    What a cast to go past:

    Graham Gooch (most runs at Lord’s)
    Alistair Cook (most centuries for England)

    With the same shot…

    Utterly brilliant from Root but I really cannot work out why England are still batting.
    Rumour is that the MCC will make a loss on this test match if it doesn't go deep into the fourth day.

    I wonder if somebody has had a word.
    Given all the Champagne they sell I'd have thought they were making supernova amounts of money

    (OK that's terrible)
    I'm sure you can cava niche for your line of punning.

    This is bleak and surely unsustainable. Can you really have a “carnival” where there are multiple murders and other stabbings? And endless police injuried and sexual assaults?

    Its turned into something thoroughly grim. Move it to somewhere it can be better policed. Hyde park

    You don't need a carnival for endless police sexual assaults. They're quite capable of doing that at any time.

    This oldest first malarkey is a PITA. Read through the thread and then have to scroll all the way back to the top in order to make a comment.

    The work around is to reply to the last comment in the thread, even if you intend to say something totally unrelated.

    Off topic, I can report that Dr Sunil is not the only PBer to have taken a battery powered train to Headbolt Lane.

    It was the Leeds Caribbean carnival the same weekend. As far as I'm aware, it was a peaceful event where everyone had a good time.

    It's easier to get to the latest comments on there because you can choose the page number.

    I've only just moved over to it cos it's easier to access the most recent comments following the Vanilla change and I'm ok with it 👍

    I don’t know why Notting Hill has got so bleak. But it has. Clearly drugs gangs go there to settle scores and bystanders get in the way. Horrible

    Also with vanilla you can add photos really easily. I don’t understand why anyone would use the other portal

    Well, nobody’s going to believe that. The Met are a violent bunch.

    Oh, sorry, you meant the carnival?
