Harris pulls away from Trump in six of seven swing states, per a Bloomberg/Morning Consult poll. Usual caveats about margins of error, the election is months away, etc, etc. Still: Trump has clearly blown his ample pre-RNC momentum and Harris is surging.https://t.co/V2CoaPnPB6 pic.twitter.com/22sJ8p5osv

The new Bloomberg state polls coupled with the new Emerson state polls that have Harris ahead in Michigan and Georgia but Trump ahead in Arizona and North Carolina and Wisconsin and Nevada and Pennsylvania tied a close race is clearly emerging. Yet with Harris with the narrow advantage as we head to Labor Day on Monday and the start of the campaign proper now the conventions and running mate picks have been made.

Overall, it looks like Harris is clearly ahead in Michigan and Georgia, Trump is ahead in Arizona and Nevada, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and North Carolina are close but with Harris overall ahead

Depends I quite often avoid pubs where smokers are outside because I don't want to suffer their smoking..
Fortunately pro cancer Brits are in a minority.

Britons tend to support the proposed smoking ban in pub gardens and outdoor restaurants

    Strong support: 35%
    Tend to support: 23%
    Tend to oppose: 17%
    Strong oppose: 18%

The number of undecided voters ranges widely, with as few as 4% of voters in Nevada, and as many as 12% of voters in Georgia, saying that they ‘don’t know’ for whom they will vote for in November.

In a tight election, with many of these states likely to be settled by only a few thousand votes, any movement of 2020 Biden voters to Trump or 2020 Trump voters to Harris could make the key difference.

In Arizona, Georgia, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, more 2020 Trump voters are switching to Harris than 2020 Biden voters are switching to Trump. By contrast, in Florida, Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, more 2020 Biden voters are switching to Trump than 2020 Trump voters are switching to Harris. A greater number of 2020 Biden voters are currently undecided than 2020 Trump voters in every state except Minnesota where the numbers are tied.

The economy remains the single most important issue for pluralities of voters in every swing state polled. Abortion and immigration are the second and third most commonly cited issues in each state, respectively, apart from in Georgia and Minnesota, where healthcare is tied with immigration as the third most commonly cited issue.

Considering that ultra processed foods make up about 60% of calories consumed in this country and that percentage increases for children and people in poorer areas, the UK government has to do something to make the population aware that their food choices are killing them.
The "food" industry bears full responsibility for the obesity epidemic, and are as evil as the tobacco companies.
Sadly, we're too far down the hole to make healthy eating affordable for the masses, so we're fucked.

I understand the book about UPF is very good, but I think oversimplifying the concept misses the point. It is not the case that the less processing you do to something the better it is for you. Vegetables' goodness is often better absorbed when the vegetable is cooked. The fat soluble vitamins in many vegetables needs to be accompanied by fat - hence we put butter on our carrots and dressing on our salad. Cabbage is better for you when fermented. These are all food processes.
I absolutely agree with you. Processed food is more than acceptable. Humans have Processed food for thousands of years and without it, humans wouldn't be at the top of the tree now. All food is Processed in some way.
What I'm arguing against is the industrial manufacture of food using unheard of and often poorly regulated chemicals and fats, gums and sweeteners. Those are the ones that suppress and overide the body's natural systems.
I saw an interesting map recently: the UK consumption of sugar is on the low side compared to European averages. Clearly this is just one measure, but I'd always thought this quite a good proxy for quality of diet.

My guess is that a big part of our problem is lifestyle, and car-dependency. You don't see many fatties in Denmark or the Netherlands.
But it's only a guess, and no doubt the answer is complex.
The Dutch are particularly interesting, as one of the few countries that rival us in terms of unhealthy traditional diet.

You can get away with it if you do enough cycling.
Dutch cycling culture is quite interesting. It is quite different from ours. It is almost all on knackered old bikes at speeds barely more than running pace. Which, in generalised journey cost terms - taking into account the cost of time, the cost of your bike, the faff time in getting it out and securing it (which is much lower in a bike which costs £100 than £1000, because you care about it less), the time taken to shower after cycling really fast, etc - works out rather better.
Old maids, mist, holy communion, isn't it? Quite a lot of cycling is like that, even in the UK. But it doesn't help the debate that the more visible manifestations are clad in lycra and aggressively going fast. (Because in too many places, aggression is the only way to survive.)
Huge numbers of people in the UK do not cycle or walk because they perceive the roads to be a dangerous environment, where they will be threatened, bullied and abused. The figures are startling.
In urban areas I think storage is at least as big an issue too. There are only 2,400 secure cycle storage spots in Edinburgh, for about 300,000 people living in flats.
    You need one of these:

This is quite an interesting little story about something that has not been a prominent political question for a few years. Badger cull to be ended by a vaccination (for badgers) programme by the end of the first term, with research on vaccines (for cows) continuing.

Cow culling cost is currently £100m approx per annum.

I didn't think that was coming this quickly. It had a walk on part in the manifesto.

It’s telling that the people shrieking and clutching at their twinset and pearls about Sir Keir moving a painting had fewer qualms about a recent predecessor and his mistress wife borrowing a small fortune off a government-appointed BBC bigwig/Tory donor to undertake a lavish Downing Street redecoration that even Donald Trump would’ve considered gaudy.

How embarrassing it would be for a national newspaper if it were to run a shrill front page article castigating SKS for his modest interior redesign at No 10 while employing Laurence Llewellyn-Boris as a leading columnist.

Recent evidence using gene sequencing to identify TB infection (rather than the unreliable "skin test" in current use) indicates a fairly high level of previously undetected infection in the British herd. It's fairly likely that the whole decades long badger cull debate was almost irrelevant to the problem.

Yeah, banning smoking is clearly as evil as persecution and genocide.

Just passed The Cricketeers. A popular pub, near Petersfield.

Massive blackboard sign on the main road outside. It reads: "Watch out, the fun police are out to get you."

Cut-through. This government might plumb new depths of unpopularity. And rapidly.

Depends I quite often avoid pubs where smokers are outside because I don't want to suffer their smoking..
That what most people do these days, methinks.

Pubs that encourage let alone permit patrons to smoke out in their "garden" are sending a message - via smoke signal! - that that they do NOT want your business of most passers by.

At least that's my impression - am I wrong?

I refer the Hon. Gentleman to my previous answer.

Had anyone written a poem starting "They came for the people wearing rainbow lanyards", that would have been crass and offensive too.

But honestly. You don't get to do a speech saying you would like to ban rainbow lanyards and then pose as standing up for freedom. Pick. A. Lane.

So, you want to enforce your personal preference on everyone else by law?

Anyway, your post made me smile: it's just reflexive defence of anything Starmer does by his fanboys. Same with the likers too.

It's cognitive dissonance regardless of how crap the idea is. He could tax toilets and you'd still defend him, on the grounds that it was quite right given how they overload the sewers, and there is a water funding crisis.

Ah another terrible backlash for Starmer.

Was it acceptable or unacceptable for Keir Starmer to have Margaret Thatcher's portrait removed from her former study in Downing Street?

    Unacceptable: 36%

It’s telling that the people shrieking and clutching at their twinset and pearls about Sir Keir moving a painting had fewer qualms about a recent predecessor and his mistress wife borrowing a small fortune off a government-appointed BBC bigwig/Tory donor to undertake a lavish Downing Street redecoration that even Donald Trump would’ve considered gaudy.

How embarrassing it would be for a national newspaper if it were to run a shrill front page article castigating SKS for his modest interior redesign at No 10 while employing Laurence Llewellyn-Boris as a leading columnist.
That was then, this is now, SKS is PM and it is the duty of all responsible and impartial commentator to point out his shortcomings.

Government by opinion poll is a poor way to conduct policy.

People might just be declaring they don't much care for smoking here, but they don't like the idea of government policing what people do and where they do it either.

It wouldn't surprise me if Starmer mini-polls everything he does. He's a tedious tactical triangulator and, now he no longer has Sunak to triangulate against, he needs to anchor his moves against something.

He's in for a shock. And his tanking government approval ratings already show that.

That's b/s. SKS moving the painting was both pathetic and hilarious, as were some of the defences on here. I was also someone who said that Johnson would be a poor PM *before* he took power.

Rephrasing the poem is a fairly unfunny, but common, and entirely permissible meme.

Well quite. Neither moving Maggie nor banning fags gets me particularly upset, it's the fact that he can't think of anything more interesting and exciting to do to define the mood and aspirations of his government in its first 8 weeks. I'm actually astonished that as many as 36% thought it was unacceptable to move the painting. The Tories would be very happy with those numbers. I don't think it's particularly unacceptable - I think it's a pathetic pity-f***k to traditional Labour supporters, but not really unacceptable.

The hideous 'sweet' smell of vapes on the High Street is much more of an issue atm for me.

Incidentally, people in our village are complaining that neighbours are smoking cannabis outside in the street and garden, and it is coming in through open windows (because of summer...).

Puzzled by the hysteria on here. The official paintings of PMs are on the staircase. This portrait is not official; it's not pusser's issue, but some gift. New occupants redecorate ... and indeed the very acceptance of the portrait originally meant something else was bumped.

So who are we bombing right now?

If the country's finances are so bad, then why are we still spending £50 billion a year on the military?

If there's no money left, why are we spending £12,000 a minute on nuclear weapons?

If we can afford to bomb people, why can't we afford to feed people?

Yes, and I wouldn't move a portrait of Churchill from the Churchill Room, nor one of Attlee from the Attlee Room or one of Thatcher from the Thatcher Room. And neither would their pictures bother me.

Of all the fish-wrapper stories about Labour today - the painting, Rayner clubbing in Ibiza (*), smoking outdoors - Phillips' is the most interesting one, and perhaps the most troublesome.

If she is right in why that the doctor prioritised her, then imagine being a Jewish patient in that hospital. It was an incredibly naive and stupid thing for her to admit. It needs investigating by the hospital, even if that is fairly pointless, because it is an *incredibly* bad look for them.

If she is wrong, then it is more than a little egocentric of her. "I'm special because I voted correctly, and the good people see that!!!!"

(*) Which I have zero issue with. People need to take holidays sometime...

    (Edit for my own stupidity)

So who are we bombing right now?

If the country's finances are so bad, then why are we still spending £50 billion a year on the military?

If there's no money left, why are we spending £12,000 a minute on nuclear weapons?

If we can afford to bomb people, why can't we afford to feed people?

Russia, via arms to Ukraine. Suspect that's what he's alluding to.

Thanks. I did say I’d pop back when travelling to post annoying photos

Can anyone guess where I am?

The photo is generic but here’s a clue: I’m about 3 minutes walk from possibly the largest concentration of dubious wealth in the world
Ashtray on the table, so it isn't Starmer's Britain, amirite?

Overwhelming number of Brits want pissheads banned from airports.

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary has proposed a two-drink per passenger limit at airports

    Support: 62%

    Oppose: 24%

It’s never going to happen because it’s

    1. Unenforceable

    2. Ridiculous

    And

    3. It wouid send Ryanair bankrupt fast as passengers went to airports that didn’t enforce it and also don’t give a fuck about Ryanair coz they don’t have Ryanair routes

You're unconscious on a South American hillside after taking too much drinks and drugs; your friend has Od'd in a ditch, and the last twenty or thirty years - and all of PB - have all been a Ewing-style hallucinatory dream.

Apols. You are, of course, correct.

I don't see why it's unenforceable. They just have to make you scan your boarding pass when ordering.

Would reduce Lounge pass sales, unless they're excluded.
