In other news, chap finds Roman fort. Good for him, though if the pic is anything like reality it was really quite a small fortlet. Maybe a couple of centuries and an orficer?

It's incredibly important not to forget Liz Truss, or history might repeat itself.

I hope history does repeat itself, only with the next Liz Truss actually being given a chance to enact her radical programme, instead of being hamstrung and hogtied by frit middle managers and sacrificed on the altar of convenient scapegoatery.

    #InLizWeStillTruss
Possibly the Tories should look at how Truss lost her seat while Hunt saved his against the odds.

More likely that they will disappear down the rabbit hole.
    Well,

    1. Anti-Hunt activism was at its peak about a decade ago, whereas the Truss witch hunt is still very much ongoing. Rightly or wrongly (and I would argue wrongly, obviously) she has become one of the most reviled politicians in history. Jeremy has almost become a post-hate John Major type figure now.

    2. Hunt's seat has a large number of genuine Lib Dem supporters, but relatively few tactical, rent-a-vote pondlife switchers, making it less volatile. Dare I say it, it probably has more voters who take an intellectual and considered approach to voting than most places...

    3. Norfolk SW was always likely to have a far higher Reform vote, allowing the seat to be taken on a stupidly low share. (And conflating Reform supporters with Trussites because both are 'right wing' is to completely misunderstand either).

I never thought Truss as an individual was cut out to be PM, and I don't think she's particularly astute, clever or streetwise. However, her values and principles are fairly closely aligned with mine and in a world where people like me usually feel politically homeless, that matters.

What really, really sucks donkey dick is that her brief Premiership has set back 'Trussism' by decades, without ever putting the ideology to practical scrutiny, let alone delivering any of its benefits. And what is worse, she will be remembered and blamed not for what she did, but for what those reacting to what she might do, did.

Regardless, I don't think considering Hunt and Truss as two opposite extremes is an accurate analysis. In many ways I'd put them in the same wing of the party. Modernisers, socially liberal, did their best work under Cameron.

"The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking - I highly suggest you try it."

Interesting that one factor identified is different agencies being on their own radio networks. This issue of inter-agency communication (and the lack of it) has also been a factor in this country, for instance the Ariana Grande concert bombing.
I just don’t buy this. Not only was the shooter the only 20 year old in America with literally zero internet presence - and no motivation? - but it turns out his home is as “clean as a lab”. Not a speck of evidence either way or anything. A 20 year old guy with a home as “clean as a lab”?

The whole thing is exceptionally suspicious

I don't think so. Played around with this site and I reckon there is a case to answer. The result for Khelif varies depending on what you show it. But when it gets a look at the whole body, it says male.

I put in some women who I know are definitely women, including one I thought it might struggle with, and it was 95% confident of them being women every time.

If you can find one that it gets wrong, I'll accept that it's not infallible.

Has it not occurred to you that Britney Grier might actually be a man?
What this discussion demonstrates is that (some) PBers think that a person is a man or woman depending on their visual appearance. Is this a majority PB view?
If you asked someone to say how do we know someone is male or female, they wouldn't be able to explain it. We just know, don't we?

Interesting thing on Greiner is her voice:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dNPZdTmpDs

Honestly? I'd say that's a man's voice, but, I'm guessing there is no doubt about her, which has made me stop and think a bit more about the boxing situation.

EDIT: Imane Khelif sounds feminine here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrODpZ-g_nc
Khelif's sex needs proper scientific evaluation. The problem is precisely noone is actually interested in the specifics with one side saying how everyone claiming she's a man is a raging transphobe and the other taking the fact she's got a hefty amount of punching power and her looks as positive proof that she's definitely a man.
To my mind is simply boils down to does she have testes, internal or otherwise. That is what gives male advantage. And we do not know because noone is actually interested in the truth. Noone that matters anyway
One thing she isn’t is trans. She was born and brought up female. So this is a case of physiological difference- intersex. It’s a shame it’s got caught up in the culture wars over trans.
Yes, the two situations do not really raise precisely the same issues, but most of the language will treat it interchangably.

The island of Fernando Poo is of course the winner in this particular game. Pronounced poh’oh.

Though now officially known as Bioko.
It was actually 'Fernando Po', not 'Fernando Poo'; the latter was a perhaps-deliberate misspelling in the Illuminatus! Trilogy.

    https://illuminatus.fandom.com/wiki/Fernando_Poo
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioko
Poo in Spanish, Po in Portuguese
That's interesting. I wonder if it was a misspelling, or whether the authors deliberately used the Spanish name for some reason?
    Was a Spanish colony.
As sometimes happens, PB's taken something I thought was 'fact' - in this case, that Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea had deliberately changed 'Po' into 'Poo' for humour - and shown it to be much more nuanced, if not wrong...
The Spanish name WAS Fernando Po.
As sometimes happens on PB a fact people thought inviolate turns out to be more nuanced, and then @Sunil_Prasannan makes it more nuanced still. So Wiki for example has “For nearly 500 years, the island was known as Fernando Po (Portuguese: Fernando Pó; Spanish: Fernando Poo)” but other sites just have Po.

    Poo is clearly superior.
But the Portuguese is Fernao do Po.
    The American is Fernando Poop.

    Wait:

    What was Truss-ism?

I ask because I know and like Kwasi. What was the burning intellectual passion that was Truss-ism?

From where I was standing it seemed like - if it was anything - it was a return to the 1960s where you got the economy moving by cutting taxes and increasing spending. Albeit, I suspect she wouldn't like it described that way.

And, for clarity, I’ve no idea who recruited him or why or how or anything, but I feel pretty sure this is not the whole story

Not sure that's right. She wasn't a Keynesian trying to give the economy a somewhat inflationary, temporary kick up the arse due to markets freezing up.

It was all a touchingly naive belief in the power of low tax - incentivising entrepreneurs through aggressive tax cutting would unleash permanently higher growth, and the Laffer curve meant no piper to pay.

Difference between short run stimulus and supposed long run miracle.

Dear @JudiciaryGOP: This seems like a big deal. Then Attorney General Bill Barr allegedly stopped an investigation into whether or not Egypt injected $10 million into the Trump for President campaign in 2016.

The linebank remains from the station along the the Rec, and there is a walkway under the bridges in Bridge Street and Woodleigh Road and then it seems to peter out somewhere along New Street ( on the way to Dymock).I am assuming it went all the way to Gloucester. Before my time though. So technically we could go all the way from Worksop to Gloucester. Handy!

She wanted to unleash the animal spirits but what was unleashed was mayhem in the markets.

That’s the whole point. You dummy

A chain hotel like radisson in Chisinau is still sufficiently connected to the Moldovan world around it, they serve serve genuine Moldovan food and it is fab and fresh and unprocessed (and also fucking spicy) not dreary club sandwiches or bland versions of curry

Or I guess you could imagine David Cameron addressing the sheep's skull at the climactic moment, as would any young Oxonian taking the ritual:

It could even be a magic word in Harry Potter.
