Anyone still arguing Boris's speech bombed in the RedWall?
And so, we move swiftly on from catastrophising over lockdowns and even the end of civilisation, based entirely on reports of the umpteenth new Covid variant of which we know almost nothing, to extrapolating the present political leanings of a large part of the nation from the results of one local authority by-election.

    Incredible. Literally.

It is a Thursday night in November, not much else to get excited about
Oh honestly, apart from anything else it's now one month until Christmas. Have you no plans?

I'm excited about it only being a half-day at work tomorrow, then getting out for a good trundle round the countryside with my running group this weekend. I'll have to discuss that with them tomorrow, mind you: the forecast for our usual Saturday looks increasingly grotty. Sunday looks a lot better - if somewhat chilly...

    But this isn't clickbait https://news.sky.com/story/covid-19-new-coronavirus-variant-b-1-1-529-identified-in-botswana-as-scientists-play-down-concerns-12478164

I know that people wish it were not so but the situation is far from rosy even without this new variant. Cases have been steadily rising (9.5% for example in the last week) and there's plenty of evidence that boosters are essential. We're starting to see breakthrough infections of the double vaccinated.

What's really good though is that this time the Government have ignored those who, eighteen months ago, came out with mocking 'panic, panic, panic' posts only to be proved very stupid as covid swept through.

Tough times still lie ahead. I wish it were not so.
Case rise is still mostly in the unvaccinated children. @Malmesbury helpfully posts this up every day. In older, booster groups cases are declining. Admissions are down from over 1000 a day, to below 800. In hospital numbers are 2000 down from the recent peak. Things look like they are going in the right direction.
Precisely. Reporting of the situation with cases lacks nuance, because nuance would mitigate against panic and reduce the attention garnered by these daily doom reports.

Cases in the over-60s are currently in decline (a fact probably not entirely unrelated to the progress of the booster campaign.) Cases in children are still increasing, but everybody save for the most extreme doom merchants has long since ceased to care about cases in children. Even the teaching unions appear to have given up banging the drum for masks and other countermeasures in classrooms. Again, we've had panic clickbait headlines for months about how cases in children might translate into a tidal wave of sick grandparents, and no such thing has happened.
    Yup.......

Agreed. I see the COVID deniers on here who normally jump up and down on me at this stage of the evening aren't doing so today. They know.

I wish it wasn't the case. But we have to be realistic.
“Covid deniers”. And so starts your nuanced and fact based argument.
I think you are talking 'moonshine' there. Wake up and see what's happening.
You're talking hyperbolic BS as usual.

Covid is real, nobody sane denies it. There aren't any Covid deniers on this site.

But there are a great number of people who quite rightly recognise that Covid is going to be with us forever and we need to live with it.

We can't put our heads in the sand, lock ourselves down and wait for it to go away. It isn't going anywhere. Its here, live with it.
Of course. But it’s the same dilemma as ever. You can’t ‘live with it’ if it threatens to crash your health system, as happened in Hubei, Lombardy, Madrid, NYC

Because, if that happens, the death rate suddenly sky rockets for everyone as hospitals are overwhelmed, and then you face something apocalyptic. Something no one can ‘live with’

We don’t know how much menace is posed by the Nunu. What it means for hospitals, vax evasion, deaths. Until we do we can’t just shrug and ‘live with it’. Hopefully the news will be good and we shall continue to exit the pandemic

This will never make sense to me

“A woman accused of indecent exposure, masturbating in public and using a sex toy in a public place, will stand trial early next year.

Chloe Thompson, of Borough Road, Middlesbrough, appeared at Teesside Magistrates' Court on Wednesday after denying the offences.

She is charged with committing a public nuisance by indecently exposing her penis to other members of the public, whilst masturbating from a property window.”

    https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/teesside-woman-accused-using-sex-22260053

    Ten years earlier…

“ A FORMER serviceman who touched a pre-teenage schoolgirl was jailed for a year, prompting loud gasps in court.

Andrew Douglas McNab, 31, took advantage of the underage girl when he sexually assaulted her.

He said he molested her in a “moment of madness” while weak and mentally scarred from his Army service, Teesside Crown Court heard.”

So in 3 out of 4 seats so far, there have been swings to the Conservatives from Labour. What do they have in common? They are all Leave seats and marginal seats Blair won but which now have Conservative MPs in the Midlands and Essex.

Immigration is my biggest question mark over voting Labour. I trust the Starmer version of Labour on the economy. I believe he is generally competent. I believe he will probably handle COVID well. But I don't trust him not to open the flood gates on Immigration, particularly on asylum seekers and low income arranged marriages.

And so, we move swiftly on from catastrophising over lockdowns and even the end of civilisation, based entirely on reports of the umpteenth new Covid variant of which we know almost nothing, to extrapolating the present political leanings of a large part of the nation from the results of one local authority by-election.

    Incredible. Literally.
It is a Thursday night in November, not much else to get excited about
Hey! It was my birthday. And Thanksgiving too.
I got a new phone, a Buddhist text and a deadly variant that will do for me and all of you!!
    And some by elections.

Starmer is still not having much appeal outsider of Remainerville, it still looks like Labour need Burnham to make much real impact in Leave areas held by the Tories

Wrt to the vote in Wigan. There are two groups of Indy's on Wigan Council. They both think Labour is corrupt, but they hate each other more. So it isn't quite as simple as adding the two Indy votes together.

    Or "once bitten, twice shy".

After the India thing earlier this year, the government might not want to take any chances. And to be perfectly blunt (and I say this with South African relatives) the targetted nations aren't ones that will engender much sympathy that flights are grounded.

Had this been a Madrid variant then it might not be moving so fast.

A Tory MP has linked young men turning to crime to women playing traditionally male roles in TV and film. Nick Fletcher said "female replacements" in shows like Doctor Who were robbing boys of good role models. Most of what he says is a bit bizarre but having seen Peaky Blinders it does make me think there is a glamour generated around gangs and violence, not sure about the Dr Who bit though.

There is more to this story.

This man was convicted of sexual offences against children and was ordered to be put on the sexual offenders' register. He was also made subject to various notification requirements. In breach of these he set up a Tik Tok account aimed at children in the female name he is now using. But failed to notify the police. This was brought to the attention of the court.

The formal name change only occurred after all these offences. There has been no medical diagnosis or treatment. This man is a sex offender who is using the trans label or, rather, the gullibility and stupidity of the authorities to try and gain access to children and women.

And, sadly, there are politicians and others who think this is ok, who think that men like him - male sex offenders - should be allowed easy access to women and children, to their spaces, should be allowed to be housed in a womens' prison, should be called a woman in statistics etc.

This is not just stupid. It is wrong. It is evil because it allows evil men to get away with harm to others, to some of the most vulnerable in our society.

He said he molested her in a “moment of madness” while weak and mentally scarred from his Army service, Teesside Crown Court heard.”

    Is it the same person?

I have wondered whether the statistics on some crimes are going to be messed up due to men identifying as women.
Indeed it is. 16 previous convictions for 11 offences by May this year.

    No. Just no.
Yes, it is clear abuse of this nonsense Woke trans agenda. Proof positive. This shit endangers women and children. Enough
It is not just sex offenders.

Unisex toilets have been put in schools and girls have refused to use them because, as any woman could have told them, girls going through their periods for the first time, do not want to have boys around to peer and laugh and humiliate them and notice when they have accidents, as happens when your menstrual cycle has not settled down into a regular rhythm.

    See this report - https://twitter.com/lnmackenzie1/status/1463911731168743436?s=21.

Then there is this man put in charge of Nottingham Girl Guides - https://twitter.com/belstaffie/status/1463223777727295495?s=21. The Guides are now doing an inquiry.

There is "inclusion" and then there is a form of blindness and stupidity which causes such brains as you have to fall out of your ears. Too many in authority are suffering from the latter malady.

The problem is that virtually every other European country is moving in the opposite direction.
