Elect Paxman0

On the audience questions, I can't remember a single Cameron answer, he blabbed all the way from start to finish.
I'm forced to give a 6/10 because I can't see how anyone could understand what was he saying but he looked good.
In total a 5/10 for Cameron in his segment.
He did a worse than expected.0 -
Given he is generally pretty bland, and has no record in government to defend (in the last 5 years anyway, it seems like he gives the impression of never having been in intentionally sometimes), I find it hard to imagine the questions to Ed M from the audience will be harder, though they couldn't get much softer either.0
-
I think the worst thing for Miliband is that many people will switch off before he's even on.0
-
It's the economy stupid.tyson said:Oh god. Can he stop talking about the strong economy, all the bloody time. Is that it? Is that all we're going to get. Strong economy. Strong economy. Strong economy and yes did I forget to say the strong economy.

The same reason Labour keeps going on about the NHS, its a traditional strength.tyson said:Oh god. Can he stop talking about the strong economy, all the bloody time. Is that it? Millibands first audience question "So stabbing your brother in the back, do you regret it?"
Second question"Is it you or Harmen that is a fecking nob?"
Third Question"Are you crap".
etc etc etc0 -
Sorry should have been clearer. I don't think this evening will do any harm, and wouldn't have done any harm, to Tory prospects - whether it was 2 days before the election or 40 days. But entirely because of what we both agree on - people are pushing obvious buttons of activists. Not the buttons of marginal voters. Still pretty convinced Tories will win the vote and have the highest number of seats. No car crashes and we'll possibly sneak a majority.FrancisUrquhart said:
Errhhh that is what I am saying. Those attacks aren't new and Cameron has been attacked repeatedly about them. It used to be every single PMQ's that a Labour MP would ask a question on food banks and if Cameron had stopped beating his wife.Mortimer said:
I really don't agree. Zero hours and food banks have not resonated with Midlands marginal voters. Can't see why it's going to change anything now...FrancisUrquhart said:Cameron's saving grace of his 20 minutes with Paxman is that the GE isn't for another 6 weeks and despite not doing very well, there wasn't anything new in terms of attacks. Labour / Guardian / BBC axis have been banging on about food banks and zero hour contracts for the past 5 years.

If you read Steve Richards' article the other day it's strange just how much focus Miliband has put on these things or what he expected to be debates. Seems very high risk and he has no excuse for not performing.0

Ed Ed Ed !0

@Toryspinner: Unbelievably, Ed managed to do worse!' #tweetscomingyourway
@bogstandardtory: Cameron set a low target in his innings, but Ed couldn't chase it down #tweetsonPBat10300 -
It does matter. Strong Economy....tyson said:Oh god. Can he stop talking about the strong economy, all the bloody time. Is that it? Is that all we're going to get. Strong economy. Strong economy. Strong economy and yes did I forget to say the strong economy.

Probably not, the questions are no doubt checked before they are asked.compouter2 said:Millibands first audience question "So stabbing your brother in the back, do you regret it?"

Yes its only the single most important thing the government was elected to do and has done. Why won't he talk about One Direction instead of the government's duty?tyson said:Oh god. Panelbase tables are up

Podium looks odd given what we know about the level of the questions from the audience!0
-
Only one effective question from the audience, Cameron was mediocre at best and very weak with Paxman.0
-
No need to apologise. I take your point. And there is a counter argument - if the facts are allowed some room to breathe.tlg86 said:
Sorry, I wasn't suggesting that zero hours contracts are the worst thing in the World or anything - I was just pointing out something that could be used against him in the coming hours/days.Flightpath said:
Yes. I think your little exchange there shows how pointless these interviews/debates are. Any answer is twisted by an opponent. If you are a supporter its inevitable that you would make allowances or take the point. If you are a DK then the nature of the format will not be enlightening.Mortimer said:
Rubbish. He said that they suit some people. And they do. Get in the real world - without zero hours there would be fewer jobs, lower economic growth, more reliance on a state that can not afford to spend as much as it does.tlg86 said:The only thing that struck me as possibly significant is that Cameron admitted to not being able to live on a zero hours contract.
I am happily watching a programme which is informing me on BBC4

Ed straight in with Cameron's confession on zero hours contracts.0

Go Ed!0

If it were the only thing going for our democracy, so would ISeanT said:That was mortifying, I am embarrassed on behalf of British democracy.
What else has he got to go on? And even that one is pretty shaky territory.tyson said:Oh god. Can he stop talking about the strong economy, all the bloody time. Is that it? Is that all we're going to get. Strong economy. Strong economy. Strong economy and yes did I forget to say the strong economy.
It's the 5-way I'm interested in seeing, not sure how the spin will have been prepared for each side.RobD said:
Just wait for the 7-way.SeanT said:That was mortifying, I am embarrassed on behalf of British democracy.
Ed starting off laughing - he couldn't believe how easy these questions are either.

turned back on camera0
-
Miliband looks quite pumped up0
-
Ed starts with a round of applause0
-
Well now we're going to see Miliband get duffed in by Paxman.0
-
Burley last thing to Cameron"Do you eat three shredded wheat" First question to Miliband "Will they still be clapping you after your questions?". She cannot help herself.0
-
And that is exactly the point and exactly the message!tyson said:Oh god. Can he stop talking about the strong economy, all the bloody time. Is that it? Is that all we're going to get. Strong economy. Strong economy. Strong economy and yes did I forget to say the strong economy.
Tories feel the same about Labour banging on about our bloomin' NHS

Miliband got a good start surprisingly with the audience, using the Paxman Cameron questions.0
-
This question confuses me (in the write up for it anyway) - is it ok to demonise higher rate tax payers so long as they are not working class in origin?0
-
He tries to laugh, be casual and friendly. But then his answers are far too earnest and Fabian.SeanT said:Oh god, Miliband is excruciating already.

Cameron gets questions about breakfast cereal, Ed about socialism0
-
Oh, "this is important for the audience". Patronising.0
-
Scratch that, Miliband is talking about the middle class on a working class question.0
-
He cant help it...bvut he does come across as a tw@t0
-
When I met Gareth from IT....Casino_Royale said:Oh, "this is important for the audience". Patronising.

Ed looking and sounding pretty normal to me - not a surprise, he's not as weird in manner as the sketch artists make out, but will it surprise the few casual viewers watching?
Anyone else hoping Ed would forget the third thing of his answer there, do a Perry?0 -
Only watched Miliband for 20 seconds - he's already lost because of the tone and tenor of his voice. He's whining.0
-
Alan Yentob, C2 and D's....Speedy said:Scratch that, Miliband is talking about the middle class on a working class question.

Ed doing ok too.0
-
Bad intervention from Kay there.0
-
Guardian comments not happy with quality of questions from the audience. Good news!0
-
Nice to see Ed getting the dolly questions Dave was getting....err0
-
Ed just sent a load of Con to UKIP switchers back to the Tories.0
-
Hmm, the old 'not my priority, so I won't even do it at all' answer from Ed, not my favourite kind of answer.0
-
That Sunil is NOT me BTW!!!0
-
Burley back in again. I can only remember her stroking Daves ego....oh and shredded wheat.0
-
So far Miliband is doing quite good, in contrast to Cameron he answers questions clearly, and he's sounding like a normal person!!0
-
Kay showing her passion with Ed.0
-
Brother question....told you!!!0
-
Another poor intervention.0
-
I have never understood what "outward-looking country" means. It's something that Blair always used too.
That said, Ed doing ok generally.0 -
Tory audience0
-
I find Ed walking up to Kay Burley when answering her a little bit strange...0
-
I think this might be going better for Ed. The Cameron session seemed incredibly soft. At least this has some interesting questions.0
-
Ed doing ok with the answers. Engaging .... but .... and it's not fair but I see Gromit in a suit.
Ed gets the brother question. Hhmmm.0 -
Good that EU question dealt with in a realistic manner. Breath of fresh air.0
-
"Miliband says it is relevant. We need to encourage growth, so we get more tax revenues."
I wonder how much growth he think is really possible. OBR are predicting about 2.5% a year for next 5 years, historically it is very difficult to get even that,,,look back of the economic tail winds of first couple of terms of Labour government and they didn't get that. Look back over history, even before competition from China, India, etc, you just don't get 4-5%.0 -
@MichaelLCrick: Tougher audience questions for Miliband than for Cameron0
-
Ouch. "Would your brother have done a better job?"0
-
I feel sorry for Kay - much less entertaining job for her this evening.
And now a David M question? Really? That's one of the things I like about Ed M, that he was willing to take on his brother.0 -
Burley back in again on his brother. Jesus wept!0
-
He's getting the gestures correct. But his tone, manner and words are not. He's like a lecturer talking to students who need to be educated.Blueberry said:Only watched Miliband for 20 seconds - he's already lost because of the tone and tenor of his voice. He's whining.

Yeah that's why the only applause was for Dave. Oh, wait...Freggles said:Tory audience

Kay, you aren't the bloody interviewer.0
-
Thought I heard a couple of hisses at Kay Burley after that question.0
-
Burley more aggressive on Ed than Dave0
-
Maybe that is how he sees it?Casino_Royale said:

Kay Burley reducing the amount of questions significantly by asking her own set ups for Miliband to bat down. Pathetic weakness for Labourite Kay.0
-
Emphasis on move away from New Labour - not good for winning floating voters.0
-
"Yes, I'm a socialist". It's all coming out now.0
-
We don't rely on the EU Ed you dork!0
-
I'm not a fan of Ed but I have to say I find Kay Burley's interventions a bit much. She looks incredibly biased in favour of Cameron.0
-
Agreed - this comes a lot less naturally to Ed, and he has improved on it - but a little way to go.Casino_Royale said:

Christ, the socialism Question,go on Ed,knock it out of the ball park - lol0
-
Ed was very good on the David question, he framed it as a way for change away from New Labour and he put a little emotion from the family angle.0
-
Ed follows through.0
-
much more interesting questions and answers. But not Prime Ministerial in a million years0
-
As a natural Tory, I hate to say this, but at least Ed is talking about ideas and visions (even if they are rubbish). This just feels better than Dave.0
-
Therein lies the problem.FrancisUrquhart said:

Jesus I think Burley is pushing it with the family stuff0
-
Burley should be fired for that. Taken at least 5 minutes out of the audience questions so Miliband can look good hitting her tee ups.Tykejohnno said:Christ, the socialism Question,go on Ed,knock it out of the ball park - lol

Burley, just shut the feck up.0
-
Ooh, a 'contrast yourself with Clegg' question - that's an easier one.
Agree with the mood that Ed's questions have been a bit better, in terms of being a tad more challenging or interesting.0 -
Jeez those teeth....0
-
Ed coming across as sincere and passionate. So much better than those God-awful canned soundbites he's been throwing at us for the past 4 years.
That said, I'm worried people are not even going to be listening to what he says because they won't get past the still weird voice.0 -
Must admit that made me look up!Sunil_Prasannan said:That Sunil is NOT me BTW!!!

Never understood why Ed keeps on with the claim that if wages go up then so do tax revenues...surely if wages go up for lowest paid then they'll not be paying tax anyway, but profits of the employer will go down, and so too will their tax contributions.0
-
It's on Sky isn't it? Who owns that? Do I have to spell it out!SeanT said:Why is this SO much harder for Miliband? Weird. Still won't shift votes.

Amazing answer on Cameron, bring up the two Kipper complaints0
