And Djokovic played well. That was lights out tennis from Sinner.
Frustrating that Sinner managed to find his best form when he had been looking very average in earlier rounds . I was really hoping Djokovic could get that elusive 25th Grand Slam title .

Yes, does it pass the risk/effort vs benefit test compared to just sorting out council tax?

Sorting out Council Tax is only half the prize, sorting out Stamp Duty is the other big one.
Stamp Duty is an awful tax on mobility. Eliminating it within an LVT is a very good move.

I would levy land value tax at the same rate, on all privately-owned land. Look to abolish council tax, business rates and inheritance tax.

Have we run out of roofs yet, that we need to plaster panels over prime farmland?
Huge commercial solar schemes are almost the exact opposite of what the UK grid needs anyway. The contribute loads of power in summer when demand is lowest, and the spot price is almost zero, cash in on constraint payments when their is excess supply, then for the four months of the year when demand is highest they contribute virtually nothing.
Hasn't the British grid operator been warning of electricity shortages during the recent heatwaves?
Seems like there's ample demand for extra solar supply, with battery storage to shift to summer nights, to provide electricity during a heatwave when wind generation is low.
That's a more battery storage problem, not a more generation problem. Electricity prices at lunch time will have been pretty low, it's just that the evening peak (at which point solar won't be direct contributing much) is being increased by the aircon load. Building out loads more solar won't do much to help with this.
I hate to indulge in the trivial when the murder of Ann Widdecombe is still fresh, but I need to moan about a film. IMHO, there are/were three perfect films: Alien, Manhunter, Apocalypse Now. Recently they have been disfigured by "director's cuts": Alien has a variant (not too bad but entirely unnecessary and worse than the original) and Apocalypse Now was ruined by the "Final Cut" (it's just rubbish). Now Michael Mann did the Final Cut for Manhunter and the 4k version is now out, being rereleased in September. The person in the back row silently weeping salty tears will be me. Why can't they leave well enough alone?
I remember coming out of seeing Manhunter at the cinema - and thinking it the best film I had ever viewed.

My suggestions would be 1. Rates based on typical (not actually charged) rents for that type of property: encourages adding value to the property as you wouldn't pay higher rates. Discourages deliberately reducing rents to gain lower rates. 2. Rates paid by property owners, not renters. Encourages realistic rents as these now include taxes. Particular issue for pubs. 3. Some relief possible for empty properties, but temporary and not 100%: encourages exploitation and discourages landowners from sitting on property and/or expecting unrealistic rents.

Solar tends to be at its best when we have high atmospheric pressure, and hence little wind. The two are largely complementary. Add in tidal and batteries to smooth it out it gives us energy independence, energy security and a better balance of payments.
It isn't going back to some hair shirted pre -industrial age, it is moving forward into a world of clean, sustainable power. It is just common sense.

My solar panels are kicking out plenty of power in the evenings as well at this time of year and with this amount of sun.
My 5kw battery is drained down to 10% at peak times and is always back at 75% by sunset.

I hope by ploughing through it and seeing the effects, perhaps people will learn that this is not the way to do things."

Why is it always heavily odds on that the next vote fixing story will involve Republicans ?
Three Florida Republicans were just charged with creating a fake voter guide to steal an election.
They did not hack the machines. They did not stuff the ballot box. They printed a fake Republican voter guide, made it look nearly identical to the real one, and mailed it to tens of thousands of voters before a 2024 primary.

On the unimproved land value, or the property value?
Unimproved land value doesn't work, 75% of the tax take (regardless of the chosen rate) would have to come from farmers, and there isn't enough money in the agri sector to pay anything like the current amount s raised by council tax and businesses rates.
Current valuation of the land and buildings could fly, but it does provide a terrible disincentive to improve anything if it results in a straight up tax increase.

Alternatively: domestic clean energy generation close to large urban population centre and existing transmission, constructed on ecological desert agricultural monoculture adjacent to an industrial estate, rejected by NIMBYs.
This is why we need nodal pricing. NIMBYism is perfectly rational unless people enjoy energy cost discounts for living next to this stuff.
The bit I don’t get is all the “ruining land” bollocks
The chap I know who is putting in solar panels isn’t even putting stakes into the ground - the frames are weighted down with cages of stones. The power electronics are in a couple of cabinets - which sit on concrete slabs that were lorried in, precast, and just sit on the ground.
He runs sheep around the panels to keep the grass down.
You could de-install the lot in a day or two. And just have some patches of grass to grow back.

Fixing (ie abolishing) SDLT is a much bigger win than fixing council tax, for all that council tax is a really badly designed tax.
I wouldn't be shocked if the growth unleashed from fixing property misallocation due to SDLT distortions ultimately boosted government revenues in a way that offset a good chunk of the lost SDLT revenue - my guess is that after ten years the government would get about 30% back. (ie down £15bn in SDLT, up £5bn in other taxes).

I think the extra scenes at the USO show and plantation make sense of some other parts of the film.

My ideas are half arsed, but vaguely thinking of how a surveyor might get a ballpark value or rental figure without visiting the property or considering the condition, using an online calculator. ie type of property, location, square metres etc. No accountants, and importantly, no revaluations required.
Whatever property tax we come up with needs to be easy to calculate, collect, be able to raise large sums and be affordable.
A part of my prejudice against LVT is that I think there is a much better case in principle for abolishing private land ownership entirely. Land could be a public good, owned by the collective or state, which leases out exploitation rights on long leases. LVT seems neither one thing or the other.

The sense of narcissism on social media. There’s no substance to it. People used to be smarter than that. I hope it’s just a trend and self awareness comes back. Identity is currency now. Social media has coarsened conversation. It has polarised it to unworkable levels. It has facilitated grotesque egotism. It does not work. I hope by ploughing through it and seeing the effects, perhaps people will learn that this is not the way to do things."
In the modern world we have much more ability to curate and re-invent our identities than ever in human history. It isn't something that shows us in a good light. Few are better people online.
When my son was single, he told me he was taller online.

But all of you here are delightful people in your posts, so you must be angels in real life!
I have been to one face to face PB drinkies, putting a face to an online name does indeed confirm the above.
It makes no sense but when I think of a poster with an avatar I often imagine them looking like that. The strongest example of this was Sandy Rentool and Yanis Varoufakis. If I went to a PB event and somebody not looking like Yanis Varoufakis introduced themselves as Sandy I'd be discombobulated and perhaps even a bit suspicious.

All those people facing higher electricity bills will thank you for your help in this matter.
I don’t understand why we don’t build tidal power.

Never thought you'd be on the end of a Nigel email list, Barnesian.
Is it me or since @Leon* and @isam have been banished to ConHome for perpetuity there often seem to be long periods of tumbleweed between posts? * Particularly Leon
It's not loss for the former but I miss Isam. If you want to follow Leon's exploits just follow his stalker, Sean T on X.
I have not the greatest of history with (in particular) one of those posters, so it makes no odds to me whether they come and go. Both often went down particularly unpleasant race related rabbit holes on a regular basis.
It is what it is.
@isam was mostly an interesting poster, particularly on betting and football matters. Not so keen on his reposted Musk rage bait. So a bit of a curates egg.
I would just skip Leon's posts. How can anyone miss a troll?
RCS should let him back to post on Vanilla, but forget to tell him the rest of us have moved to Wordpress.
The arse that is Lineker is causing trouble by referring to the Falklands as the Malvinas. He really is a treacherous little shit.
You will have to have him reinstated before you have him sacked again.
Was the Queen Mother of Football, now just another tragic podcast wanker.
One of the most successful podcast owners in the UK. Paid more, I believe, by Netflix for the World Cup than his annual salary at Auntie.
I would love to be such loser.
I hold no brief for Lineker, and tend to go with "wanker" for his political interventions trying to exploit his football audience.
However, in this country we desperately need a respectable, reliable media from somewhere, and quality independent media are part of that ... including podcasts.
I can honestly say I've never listened to a Taylor Swift song.
I've thought about it, but then I've said to myself: wouldn't you rather listen to "Promised You A Miracle" by Simple Minds again, and the answer is always yes.

It will be quite busy what with Leon, Eadric, Lady G., Byronic and several dozen others all in deep conversation with each other.
Does anyone know whether it's compulsory to vote in Australian federal by-elections? I know for sure that is compulsory to vote at general elections, but not sure about bye-s.

This is a quite remarkable barrier documented on a Public Footpath by Paul Whitewick (countryside / landscape Youtuber), which is ... astonishing.
I've never seen anything like it. It's like a secure turnstile for entry for to somewhere like GCHQ, or Slade Prison. I have seen ones which DO quite closely represent the gatehouse to Slade prison, elsewhere.
I'm surprised they didn't build a gatehouse with a portcullis and murder holes.

Not an expert though.

36 in Quimper today - which is in Brittany.
It is what it is.
Sorry, I'm a big Novak fan. Understand others aren't.
Didn't mean it 🙂

It is absolutely critical — given the climate the mainstream media have whipped up in this country in recent months — that we are told EVERYTHING about the Ann Widdecombe murder suspect, the case, the context, all of it.

My 5kw battery is drained down to 10% at peak times and is always back at 75% by sunset.
0.49% on all land regardless of use, no exceptions, no reliefs
If property developers don't like paying LVT they can build on it, and sell the houses. Would probably stop land banking.
Bad news on the whole.
Despite pan-European Judgements against lead defendants the following was announced by the UK Judge.
PSA fitted cheat devices and it affected performance of Citroen and Peugeot cars. So good news for Peugeot- Citroen owners.
Mercedes Benz (my particular interest) fitted cheat devices, but NoX emissions were not markedly greater than anticipated without the devices.
Ford look like they are home free.
Group action non- lead defendants BMW, Hyundai -Kia, Renault -Nissan, Vauxhall / Opel etc are now all on hold.
B***ard!

I apologise for my insensitive comments about Ann Widdecombe's death
Nobody deserves to die, no matter what they believe in
My sincere condolences to Ann's family & friends
I support the police investigation & want justice for Ann
David Byrne at Latitude Festival two weeks tonight is much more my sort of thing.
Met her many years ago - we had an interesting discussion on QALYs. Completely opposite view to mine.
But she managed to be utterly passionate about her beliefs (and defending them) without being impolite.
There’s value in that.

It is £15 billion a year of revenue in England.
A significant reduction (third? half?) is possible.
We don't know whether it is any of the following speculations as to what happened
[lists them in order]
But I'm not going to speculate.
No other exceptions.
Time for Farage to consult with the oracle, Andrew Tate?
I hope this is not [insert wild speculation here]
But of course I am not going to speculate now and want the police to do their job.
But hey - he's a true patriot and all that.
But hey - he's a true patriot and all that.
0.49% of what?
