"Burnham has stated that he primarily defines his identity as British rather than English, which he has attributed to his Irish heritage. He has said that he sees himself as British first, a north-westerner second, a Liverpudlian third and English fourth."
Oh dear. He's one of those.
He is in the majority then:
"More than half of the usual resident population (54.8%, 32.7 million) chose a "British" only national identity in 2021, which is a rise of 35.8 percentage points from 19.1% (10.7 million) in 2011. The opposite trend was seen for the "English" only identity. This fell by 42.8 percentage points, from 57.7% (32.4 million) in 2011 to 14.9% (8.9 million) in 2021."

Resigning as PM is government business.
I know. But previously PMs have resigned as party leader and stayed in post until the new leader is elected, then resigns as PM. I can't remember whether the first announcement is party business (no crest) or Govt business (crest)

Has Mr Burnham given any indication whether he'd support the Parliament Act being used to force the Assisted Dying bill through? Or can't the PM influence it given that another private member has chosen to bring it back?
There was an article over the weekend which said Burnham's Catholicism might be an issue on this.
Regardless of PM the bill is unlikely to pass the Commons anyway.
It barely passed last time, and only with certain safeguards which were then removed by the likes of Lord Falconer.
Thank you, interesting. When it said bring back the exact same bill I thought it meant without the Lords' amendments.
In order to use the Parliament Act, the Commons needs to pass the exact same Bill in two different sessions.
So yes, they’re trying to get it through without the Lords’ amendments.
The horror stories out of Canada on MAID (as they call it there) are terrifying.
They are. They’re really frightening
I can see loads of money grasping relatives despatching granny for the inheritance and to stop her incurring care fees.

Starmer resigns as leader of the Labour party and NEC will start the process of electing a new leader in July. Starmer will remain as PM until September and the new leader is elected

A timeline that seems to presume a contest, but if there's no contest, a new leader will be elected by the end of July, no?
There's an EU-UK summit on 22 July, which I'd expect he will want to lead. Hopefully to announce that GB pet owners will be getting our EU pet passports back at some point in 2027.

If only one person [Burnham] is nominated then Starmer will be out in July, when nominations close.
He only stays on until September if there's a second candidate nominated so it guess to a vote among the membership, etc.

No, a three month lame duck period. God knows why that is considered reasonable. Nominations should open tomorrow, not 9 July
9th July, 3 weeks of "nominations" then Burnham PM by end of July
That only works if there is only one candidate. Being a supporter of democracy, I see elections as positive, not divisive, and the Labour Party should want to have one

And Scotland Understander fifth.
NEW: Andy Burnham 'understands Scotland deeply' as he's from the north of England, a Labour MP has claimed
Starmer passed the paperwork across Starmer’s desk to facilitate the resignation.
However the paperwork was not the Resignation Of The PM. It was the resignation of the PM - which isn’t actually a resignation, according to the Act Of The Chamberpots (Ethlred The Forgettable, 798).
So Starmer hadn’t actually informed Starmer, which means that Starmer didn’t get the paperwork to actually pass over Starmer’s desk.
Starmer is very angry at this. And will fire everyone uninvolved - Larry the Cat, for a start.

Yeah but I am talking about what I think will happen. There won't be a contest.

Hopefully that's the plan. Gives Burnham a bit of time to do some planning - there were stories this morning that Burnham's people were looking for a few months to work out what he was going to do. And allows Starmer to lead the UK team to the EU summit before bowing out on a relative high.
"Restoring trust on the economy, defence and national security,"
Um, no. No you didn't. And the fact that you obviously didn't, and yet still put it in the speech, is indicative of the fundamental problem with Starmerism: he confuses words with deeds and facts. He thinks if he says something it is true. It isn't. That's the problem.

The absurdity is the 3 weeks. There is only one candidate. It will be clear before 9th July that there will be only one.

So what does Burnham do with that time?
Sorts out his team, works out his programme for government, hits the ground running...
Oh no it will be the summer recess and then the conference season so fuck all will happen until October. Just like 2024.
According to the BBC forecast, on Thursday after lunch while France will be even hotter than the UK, we're forecast to top almost everywhere in Europe including Iberia and Greece, most of Italy and all of central and eastern Europe, as well as Morocco, with only central Italy, Albania, Algeria and Syria running us close with forecasts at 34-35C.
Good job Fifa didnt award us the World Cup or we would need advert breaks every 15 minutes!
It would have been a fantastic way to reverse stereotypes about British weather.
At this rate the Gulf states will not be decamping to London to avoid the summer heat...
On the plus side, the solar death ray is working at optimal capacity.
I look forward to the opening of the ballot for initial trial candidates.
To be fair, Archimedes beat me to the punch by about two thousand years.
These things snowball. Now Streeting has pulled out, it will be done and dusted in days and the pressure on Burnham to take over in days will increase. Nobody will listen to Starmer any more. Why should they?

(One suspects there will be a timescale, and he isn’t about to go and see His Majesty today!)
Rest of the Cabinet present to ensure he goes through with it.
Presumably pro-Rejoin protesters.
I will not miss this monotonous tone
Nominations for Labour candidate for GM Mayor closed yesterday.
Unless he is a closet Burnham supporter I suppose..
Potentially only one candidate?,
Remember - no one sane is going into politics there are easier ways to change things
He only stays on until September if there's a second candidate nominated so it guess to a vote among the membership, etc.
A week’s a long time in politics, five months is an eternity.
Burnham will engineer a coronation and end of story. He will be PM by August.
