Step 3: Fill the pool with water from the Potomac River, the phosphates from which cause algae blooms. Step 4: Freshly sealed pool and extreme heat result in a super scum event Step 5: Direct National Park Service to dump hydrogen peroxide into the pool which causes the paint to peel. Step 5: Deploy US National Guard to stop people from taking photos of the swamp as a perfect metaphor for the administration. Step 6: Blame someone else.

If Burnham fails, it's an object lesson in how running the country is no job for a newbie. Which also kippers Reform.
Any sign of Lectern Guy yet? What is it with PMs picking really unsuitable days to be outside?
I doubt the logic of the second position will flow through into negatively impacting Reform.
More pertinent is the comment of the Reform MP quoted in The Times, who said that on the doorstep in Makerfield Reform was for its voters "either too racist, or not racist enough".

Farage has spent his career seeking the Goldilocks level of racism.
According to the BBC forecast, on Thursday after lunch while France will be even hotter than the UK, we're forecast to top almost everywhere in Europe including Iberia and Greece, most of Italy and all of central and eastern Europe, as well as Morocco, with only central Italy, Albania, Algeria and Syria running us close with forecasts at 34-35C.

Great weather but what a shame its all happening in a the work week, then its going to cool for the weekend.
Anyhow, if Burnham doesn't work out, come the next GE voters of the Makerfield seat will have what must be a unique opportunity for a single constituency to be able to remove a second PM.
Makerfield was won by Burnham because of the Get Rid of Starmer vote.
Not because Burnham found a way to deal with Reform.
The idea that he has a magic bullet to defeat Farage is just wishful thinking.

I mean it was obvious to me from day one it wasn’t just about Starmer out. Burnham has true fans at least in that part of the world. Starmer never had that.

Has Mr Burnham given any indication whether he'd support the Parliament Act being used to force the Assisted Dying bill through? Or can't the PM influence it given that another private member has chosen to bring it back?

Regardless of PM the bill is unlikely to pass the Commons anyway.
It barely passed last time, and only with certain safeguards which were then removed by the likes of Lord Falconer.

One should certainly hope so as the entire point of the Parliament Act is the primacy of the Commons so if the Commons votes for it again then it absolutely applies.
Government/private/Salisbury/manifestos etc all don't apply to the Parliament Act. The Commons primacy does.

In order to use the Parliament Act, the Commons needs to pass the exact same Bill in two different sessions.
So yes, they’re trying to get it through without the Lords’ amendments.

We’ve actually got it pretty mild this week, albeit humid. Looking for around 40ºC today, could even be as low as 32ºC in the middle of next week.

Critics of the bill point out that Lord Falconer of Thoroton, who co-sponsored it in the last session, tabled 77 amendments intended to improve the bill sent by the Commons to the Lords.
If the Commons has to pass exactly the same bill as it passed in the last session in order to invoke the Parliament Act, then critics argue that this will mean agreeing to a flawed version of the bill. MPs, they argue, therefore face a stark choice: re-enact the original bill without amendments, or make amendments and lose the protection of the Parliament Act.

Nepo nation, the son of Sir David Frost interviews the grandson of Sir Oswald Mosley. I don’t think I’ve seen Louis Mosley without a black shirt, is it his little joke?
If Burnham does become PM then Labour would likely win most seats but would still probably need LD support to govern. We would also need to see if a Burnham led Labour squeezed the Greens, Restore start to squeeze Reform and what the impact of his tax rises would be on the economy and the polls

Burnham is Roman Catholic unlike atheist Starmer and while economically more leftwing than the PM slightly more socially conservative. Burnham has said there isn't enough hospice funding and palliative care for now to allow assisted dying

I've been down here in the constituency all week talking with folk. Kenyon was a bigger factor than Starmer. But there still seems to be a determined, stubborn refusal from outsiders to comprehend that Andy Burnham is well liked here. In a lot of cases loved. He has summat about him. The very same people who doubted he'd win, now doubt the reasons why he won.

That depends - as I remember from my work days, getting to work during a heatwave was miserable, on the tube, but being in an air conditioned office wasn't so bad. So it depends on how you get to work and what you do, as being out in temperatures of 35C and higher isn't any fun. If you can drive to somewhere air conditioned you're probably in a sweet spot. The forecasts for both next weekend and the weekend after look mostly sunny (with some chance of rain) and high 20sC, which is decent weather for being out and about.

He also ran a very skilful professional campaign. Again, the contrast with the slapdash shambles of Reform was a factor.

I think I mentioned this a few threads back, when it was last discussed.
Note it would still require a small measure of cooperation from the Lords: ..Section 2(4) of the Parliament Act provides that the Commons, when sending the bill to the Lords in the second session, may also send with it a list of “suggested amendments”. These suggestions do not alter the text of the bill as passed by the Commons, thereby preserving the identical bill requirement. Instead, the suggested amendments are sent to the Lords in a separate document or message.
If the House of Lords fails to pass the bill in the second session, then the Parliament Act may still be used. If, however, the Lords agrees to one or more of the Commons’ suggested amendments, the Parliament Act allows the Bill to be enacted with those suggested amendments incorporated...
Would opponents of the bill in the Lords be sufficiently determined to refuse approval to amendments which would improve the bill, and gamble that the Commons would reject the therefore unamended version at the second reading ?

You say he has summat about him, Ive always found him a whiny git, Maybe he has grown up since he was last on the national stage.

We have a 60s building in our school where the classrooms reach 35+ even when it is only high 20s outside. Amusingly (for me) my part of the school is air conditioned. Not sure what the rest will do this week.
ETA although I did previously work in a university in Machala in Ecuador where the air con would break and the classrooms would be 40+, and we would just use it as a behaviour management tactic, so I don't really know what we're all grumbling about.
"Burnham has stated that he primarily defines his identity as British rather than English, which he has attributed to his Irish heritage. He has said that he sees himself as British first, a north-westerner second, a Liverpudlian third and English fourth."
Has Mr Burnham given any indication whether he'd support the Parliament Act being used to force the Assisted Dying bill through? Or can't the PM influence it given that another private member has chosen to bring it back?
There was an article over the weekend which said Burnham's Catholicism might be an issue on this.
Regardless of PM the bill is unlikely to pass the Commons anyway.
It barely passed last time, and only with certain safeguards which were then removed by the likes of Lord Falconer.
Thank you, interesting. When it said bring back the exact same bill I thought it meant without the Lords' amendments.
Critics of the bill argue that, that does not make it true.
Supporters of the bill quite rightly say that if the Commons passes the bill then the Lords can either work with the Commons to improve the bill, or see it passed as is into law. Hopefully the Lords work with the Commons.
What will be removed is the Lords ability to frustrate the Commons, which is not the job of the Lords. Work to improve the bill, not prevent it passing.
Makerfield was won by Burnham because of the Get Rid of Starmer vote.
Not because Burnham found a way to deal with Reform.
The idea that he has a magic bullet to defeat Farage is just wishful thinking.
I've seen a recontact poll.
You're wrong.
It's a bit more nuanced than your blunt opinion.
The issue isnt whether he is popular ion his own doorstep, it's whether that can travel nationally.
You say he has summat about him, Ive always found him a whiny git, Maybe he has grown up since he was last on the national stage.
Given your usual charitable utterances about Labour politicians that’s a useful data point. Thank you.

Yup.
I'd say it was a mixture of Rob Kenyon/the female vote plus Nigel Farage's inflammatory rhetoric over Henry Nowak which was a stark contrast to Andy Burnham.
The Lib Dems and Greens cratered to stop Reform winning because they found Burnham palatable.
Rather than a get Starmer out vote there was a desire to be represented by the PM.

In order to use the Parliament Act, the Commons needs to pass the exact same Bill in two different sessions.
So yes, they’re trying to get it through without the Lords’ amendments.
The horror stories out of Canada on MAID (as they call it there) are terrifying.
They are. They’re really frightening
I can see loads of money grasping relatives despatching granny for the inheritance and to stop her incurring care fees.
"Burnham has stated that he primarily defines his identity as British rather than English, which he has attributed to his Irish heritage. He has said that he sees himself as British first, a north-westerner second, a Liverpudlian third and English fourth."
Oh dear. He's one of those.
He is in the majority then:
"More than half of the usual resident population (54.8%, 32.7 million) chose a "British" only national identity in 2021, which is a rise of 35.8 percentage points from 19.1% (10.7 million) in 2011. The opposite trend was seen for the "English" only identity. This fell by 42.8 percentage points, from 57.7% (32.4 million) in 2011 to 14.9% (8.9 million) in 2021."

Worse than that, the NHS and public care homes will be encouraging it at the first sign of serious illness, to save the Chancellor a fortune.
I still struggling with this story. WAPO journalists sat on their scoop for an entire year until they were ready to publish their book on the administration. Imagine the Times sitting on a similar story about the director of MI6. God know what Gabbard might have leaked in the meantime.
Absolutely insane revelations about Tulsi Gabbard.
Throughout her public life, she's been a puppet for a Hindu cult.
Washington Post got access to 25,000 pages of documents including directives from Tulsi Gabbard's cult leader telling her which policy positions to take and how to present herself throughout her career.
It matches her record in Congress. At one point, she was instructed to say "It’s not a ‘boohoo, I don’t get to go to the party’ situation, Wolf" during a CNN interview, and used that exact phrase. This is one of several examples of her taking direct orders about what to say on TV. They told her what to tweet about too.
The cult set up fake accounts to boost her on social media. Gabbard was aware, at one point telling them to add a photo to a profile.
If the BBC photo is accurate, the lectern has the crest on it, so it's Govt business not party business. Doesn't that mean he's not resigning as party leader

If Burnham succeeds, it kippers Reform.
If Burnham fails, it's an object lesson in how running the country is no job for a newbie. Which also kippers Reform.
Any sign of Lectern Guy yet? What is it with PMs picking really unsuitable days to be outside?
I wanna be the leader
I wanna be the leader
Can I be the leader?
Can I? I can?
Promise? Promise?
Yippee I'm the leader
I'm the leader
OK what shall we do?
I’ve not been to Washington for a long time, but I would suspect there’s probably cameras in a public park.

Day 1580 of the three-day war.
More pertinent is the comment of the Reform MP quoted in The Times, who said that on the doorstep in Makerfield Reform was for its voters "either too racist, or not racist enough".

Government/private/Salisbury/manifestos etc all don't apply to the Parliament Act. The Commons primacy does.
So yes, they’re trying to get it through without the Lords’ amendments.

"If Keir Starmer does decide to leave - and I don't know what he's going to do - I don't think he's going to stick around in politics for long," he says.
"For him it's always been something he needs to endure rather than do out of love.

My main issue is getting to London is because of the accident near Bedford, no trains from Sheffield to London for the time being.
I might have to go via Doncaster (Shudders).
And drafting in random police forces from across America to arrest random cyclists because they have to do something, right? (Maybe not so amusing for the cyclists...)

Normal behaviour among Trumpers I believe.
Don't the Dumocrats like nature and rewilding?

Note it would still require a small measure of cooperation from the Lords:
..Section 2(4) of the Parliament Act provides that the Commons, when sending the bill to the Lords in the second session, may also send with it a list of “suggested amendments”.
I did say that politicos would talk about Makerfield in the decades to come...
Just need to deep fry it now.
Just had one of these and it was bloody lovely!
