BREAKING: Russia, China, and France are blocking an Arab-backed push at the UN Security Council to authorize military action against Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, per NYT.
According to diplomats, the three veto powers oppose any resolution language that would permit the use of force.
The Justice Department said that a federal law enacted in the wake of the Watergate scandal that requires the president to preserve certain documents and turn them over to the National Archives at the end of his administration is unconstitutional. https://x.com/CBSNews/status/2039779903147487633
Since the Justice Department has to follow the constitution, the OLC can be asked to give an advisory opinion on whether a particular law is constitutional and should be followed. The US government has to operate day to day, it can't be in limbo waiting for someone to bring a lawsuit and it to work its way through the system to the US Supreme Court. Particularly since in the Archives case the government itself would be the only ones with standing to challenge it.
It can, but this is clearly bullshit. The government isn't "in limbo" because it can't destroy documents which it legally has to preserve.
Don't be absurd.
I note you didn't mention this. ..The Presidential Records Act has no enforcement mechanism, but Mr. Trump repeatedly invoked the law after he was indicted in 2023 on charges stemming from his alleged mishandling of sensitive government records after the end of his first term in January 2021. ..

It’s telling. “We” are not going to the moon, the Americans are. I’d love to give the benefit of the doubt and conclude she means humans, but let’s be honest, if and when China is flying people to the moon she won’t be talking about “we”.
I don’t think a lot of Brits have yet woken up to the reality the USA is no longer a fraternal ally.

I think the last time there was an enforced change of Chief in an operation this significant was when Truman fired MacArthur in 1951.
This was because MacArthur had not only been trying to ignore Truman's orders but had threatened to invade China and was demanding, publicly, that Truman use nukes.
I haven't seen anything along those lines from George.

It’s a fascinating little insight into how EU product regulation works.
Britain as a member refused to allow the term marmalade to be used for anything but citrus. Other countries wanted the meaning broadened. But we got our way. Then we left, so the rules got relaxed.
Who said we never had any influence during our membership? We got to decide naming conventions for fruity spreads!

People are becoming disillusioned with politics, or should I say disillusioned with the politicians, who appear unable to make difficult decisions and to articulate anything unpopular to the public.
The current lot appear to be masters of announcing an unpopular policy, running with it for weeks, and then reversing course after too much media/backbencher pressure, therefore upsetting both those in favour of, and those against, the actual policy.
It’s not a surprise that people are turning to NOTA parties.

What do we expect when our political class refuses to take long term decisions because they dread unpopularity in the short term?
Since the 90s, our politicians, with the connivance of the media and much of the electorate, have prioritised popularity over good government and have, unsurprisingly, ended up with neither.

Interesting article. Was it the cancellation of defence contractors' orders that was the trigger?
There seems to be a pivot by Trump from religion (evangelicals) to war (and defence contractors' bottom line). An indication that Trump no longer believes he can go for a third term but wants to collect as many trophies and cash in the next 3 years (or 6 months depending on the mid terms)

It’s not inexplicable at all, for either party.
They largely represent groups of voters who feel the main parties do not work for them full stop. Be it the young or hard left or people in deindustrialised left behind towns.
If politics had worked for them and these regions the attraction of NOTA would be far less.
Voting for the main three parties simply just gets many people more of the same and when that more of the same is just crap then they have little to lose.
Look at the forecast for Brum. Islamist’s, Refrom and Green as the three main parties.
Still, blame the voters is what many here do instead of trying to grasp why the dissillusionment.
I like my Labour MP. I’ve always voted Labour. No more. I’m not yet convinced by Reform. So next time I won’t vote, as it stands.

1,230 Russian troops and 65 of their artillery pieces no longer reporting for duty today.
It is said that the Russians need to recruit 1,100 a day just to keep the number of forces static. So the troops available for the SMO have actually been reducing for the past couple of weeks.
‘ JUST IN: You do not fire your Army Chief of Staff in the middle of a war for no reason. You fire him because of what comes next.
Pete Hegseth called General Randy George on April 2 and told him to retire immediately. The Pentagon confirmed it within hours. No reason was given. Not publicly. Not privately. A senior Army official told Fox News that Hegseth offered George nothing: no misconduct, no operational failure, no policy disagreement on the record. Just a phone call and a career ending in the middle of the most significant American combat operation in two decades.
George is the 24th general or admiral Hegseth has removed. But he is not the 24th. He is the one that matters. The Army Chief of Staff. The man whose signature sits between a president’s intent and the order that sends soldiers across a beach or into a tunnel complex. The 82nd Airborne is deploying right now.
Sacking all the generals with direct experience of the war in Iraq one by one.
Not going to be a problem when they invade Iran... no siree. It'll all be fine.

There are lots of stories of press gangs - young men summoned to court, only to find it is a recruiting officer tasked with signing him up.
I think it is now widely understood that signing up for the Russian army is a short-term death sentence.

Reform continue to ape MAGA, while MAGA’s incompetence, corruption and general disregard for reality continues to wreck the US and the global economy.
Meanwhile in Dimsville, the Tories continue to ape Reform aping MAGA. Spending countless time attacking Reform for aping the Tories aping MAGA.

The voters will let Reform have a go at filling the potholes.
But they won't let Reform run the country.
The Tory brand is still shot away after Johnson and Truss defacated all over it, but I suspect the Conservative Party survive and then thrive as some sort of Reform- Conservative alliance before jettisoning the racist Reform moniker. I suspect the new improved party will not welcome the likes of Spreadsheet and Dom Grieve back.
Labour could well be finished under Starmer. Having a poor war (with the Leader of the Free World outraged at their treacherous behaviour) against a resurgent LOTO, who to be fair hasn't put a foot wrong on PB. Bookending a hundred years would be a fitting end.

China? Nothing wrong with an autocratic regime led by a megalomaniac dictator in the MAGA world. More likely not fancying invading Canada or Denmark.

More to the point, if the US find some new technologies that aid the economy or defence they are not sharing it with us, because they no longer like or respect us. We are wishy washy woke liberals in their eyes, and that is a sin.

Good morning
It is simply inexplicable that despite everything about Farage and Reform they lead the polls and are winning locals
The greens are also surprising on the upside, and apart from SNP and Plaid all the other parties are really suffering and that includes the Lib Dems
This talks to the utter disillusionment with politics and the desire to vote for NOA
Politics is witnessing an earthquake and frankly being the government of the day is a very unhappy place and about to become worse with decisions on spending, borrowing, and taxing being the nightmare
Can't disagree with any of that Big_G. All very depressing.
I would like it but I really do not
What scares me is this has no end in sight and economic disruption across the globe creating very angry electorates
Anyway, happy easter to everyone no matter who your God is

Only because the current craven and incompetent shower are desperate to rejoin the EU but don't quite have the courage to say so openly so they do it by stealth.

The service module for the Orion spacecraft is built by ESA.
That’s the cylindrical bit below the crew module. It contains the propulsion, provides power etc.
Is was paid for by ESA, as part of the moderately complex bartering of services that go on between the various space agencies involved in the international space station (ISS). Lots of swapping stuff involved, or paying for thing in kind.
For example the Ariane launch of the JWST was another swap for ISS contributions.

The voter has had enough of 80 years of Labour and Conservative failure. Labour are holding the parcel when the music stops so the Conservatives survive and Labour don't. Zack is now on board as a proper socialist while Starmer is a poor facsimile of a Tory. The media remains pro-Conservative and anti Labour (and in the spirit of my enemy's enemy is my friend are supporting Zack).
The Conservative name thrives via Reform, but it won't be a party McMillan and Heath would recognise.
Make no mistake, this Government is poor, but your Government from 2016 was even worse.
Given that why wouldn’t people failed by both look at The Greens or Reform ?
They will probably be poor, our old City could be run by an alliance of Greens and Gaza indies it seems, but if you always do what you’ve always done you’ll always get what you’ve always got.
Labour has always been the Party of massive corruption in it's heartlands. Remember Tommy Shelby in Birmingham.

Jenrick just on Today yet again pretending he was never in the Tory party let alone a cabinet minister,
Amongst other things he was banging on about “the net zero madness”. This seems to be the latest US culture war import. Nevermind the physics, let’s treat global climate as a social science. What next: guns, or abortion?
Reform continue to ape MAGA, while MAGA’s incompetence, corruption and general disregard for reality continues to wreck the US and the global economy.
Anyway, happy easter to everyone no matter who your God is
I was up at 6 to watch the two formerly missing DW episodes on Iplayer.

Yes, they claimed that material for recycling, correctly placed in the right (council provided) boxes was “fly tipping”.
Meanwhile, on a local piece of woodland, fly tippers have managed to fly tip metric tons for… well, they’ve been doing it for months.

Marines from the 31st MEU are staged on the USS Tripoli. JSOC operators are at forward bases in Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Kharg Island, 90 percent of Iranian oil exports, sits 16 kilometres off a coast that someone will have to decide whether to approach. And the four-star general whose job it was to advise whether that approach should happen was removed 48 hours after Trump told the nation the war would continue for two to three more weeks’

The Labour Party. The party of labour. We should be focused on the needs of working people and their families. Not being social workers fixated on the underclass, while simultaneously being elitist snobs looking down with disdain on anyone who buys a Big Mac or drinks a pint in Spoons.
Then we might get people to vote for us.
Indeed but then the parliamentary intake is predominantly social worker mentality. They want to manage problems not solve them. But how many MPs come from a proper working class, shop floor, background.
And, yes, there is a snobbishness towards people who like the simple pleasures in life.
People just want a decent standard of living and an improving standard of living and many people aren’t getting that.

Good morning, everyone.
Some people also live on magic streets. These are streets wide enough for a fire engine, or a supermarket delivery, but mystically too narrow for a bin lorry, which means the residents have to trundle their bins to the end of the street. Luckily, there's more exercise to be had when the binmen, every time, leave the bins (post-emptying) strewn across the street.
1,230 Russian troops and 65 of their artillery pieces no longer reporting for duty today.
It is said that the Russians need to recruit 1,100 a day just to keep the number of forces static. So the troops available for the SMO have actually been reducing for the past couple of weeks.
How many of those casualties are ex-parrots, and how many are injured?
I imagine the Russians have little qualm in patching up injuries then reshoving people back into the meat grinder.
So there might be an element of double counting there.

You can't polish a turd so the former top dogs will have to get creative spinning turd adjacent, less stinky, stuff. A minor example of the sovereignty outcome of Brexit where you have to follow rules the UK no longer has any say in making.
Only because the current craven and incompetent shower are desperate to rejoin the EU but don't quite have the courage to say so openly so they do it by stealth.
It should be nobody else's damned business what breakfast spreads are called in foreign countries.
Question whether it's the consequences of Brexit that are incompetent or Brexit itself.
Would you prefer to kill off British exports even more than they already are, or change the name of marmalade?

And yet the whole background to this story is the UK did exactly that while we were members: insisted on what the Spanish and other countries could or could not call their breakfast spreads in their own country.
Now we’ve left, the EU was able to liberalise the rules.
Beyond which, of course, bilateral trade policy contains many of these rules, which is why even the Americans can’t call their own sparkling wine champagne.

Labour could well be finished under Starmer. Having a poor war (with the Leader of the Free World outraged at their treacherous behaviour) against a resurgent LOTO, who to be fair hasn't put a foot wrong. Bookending a hundred years would be a fitting end.
The only story coming out of the May locals will be the devastation of Labour in its heartlands. It is already scoring under 1% across swathes of the country where it was not competitive.

A breakfast time parable of the incoherence of Brexit.

Our bin men have magic powers. The road is a genuine pain to drive down in a normal car - winds just enough combined with the width.
The bin men drive down, without smashing cars or anything else. And put the rubbish and recycling in the correct vehicles. Then put the bins and recycling boxes back in front of the right houses.

Would you prefer to kill off British exports even more than they already are, or change the name of marmalade?
Neither.
Let exporters label the marmalade made for export as citrus marmalade and let them label those for the UK as marmalade with "not for EU" on the label.
Any exporters that want only one label could choose to write citrus marmalade and stack that on our shelves too and that would be their choice.
Exports allowed, domestic control allowed too. Win/win.
So many of the casualties are now down to drons rather than artillery barrages.
The ratio of dead to injured was something like 1:3 at the start of the SMO. It is now something like 3:1 for the Russians. Those Ukrainian drones don't do injured.

In any case drones are proving to be to our era what machine guns were 110 years ago. They are turning front lines into a killing field for anyone trying to gain meaningful territory.
Right now we're in an unstable equilibrium. And it now seems far more likely the thing to 'break' will be on the Russian side, rather than the Ukrainian one. Albeit I suspect it will be years and not months for that to happen.

How is morale in the sandpit? I've been talking to various people over the last week who've mentioned family and friends are deciding to return to blighty.

The food manufacturers really don’t like the whole “not for EU” labelling. Consumer research suggests it implies the product doesn’t meet EU quality standards. Good enough for the Brits, but not for those health conscious Europeans.
Rightly or wrongly, the EU regulators have built a brand image as consumer safety champions.

Smaller class sizes would be better for everyone, it might even encourage a pick up in the TFR!
The government isn't "in limbo" because it can't destroy documents which it legally has to preserve.
Don't be absurd.
I note you didn't mention this.

The man is a stupid drunk.
But he's also dangerous.
Seems reasonable to me.

Until there is firm action it’s all piss and wind.
We are WINNING, in Space, on Earth, and everywhere in between — Economically, Militarily, and now, BEYOND THE STARS. Nobody comes close! America doesn’t just compete, we DOMINATE, and the whole World is watching. God bless our incredible Astronauts, God bless NASA, and God bless the Greatest Nation ever to exist, the United States of America!
Not really giving one small step for mankind vibes.
This was because MacArthur had not only been trying to ignore Truman's orders but had threatened to invade China and was demanding, publicly, that Truman use nukes.
I haven't seen anything along those lines from George.
"Marmalade has long been a quintessential British preserve, with some recipes handed down between multiple generations.
But jars of the fruity spread could look a little different on shop shelves under the UK government's planned EU food deal, it has emerged."

Britain as a member refused to allow the term marmalade to be used for anything but citrus. Other countries wanted the meaning broadened. But we got our way. Then we left, so the rules got relaxed.
Who said we never had any influence during our membership? We got to decide naming conventions for fruity spreads!

Since the 90s, our politicians, with the connivance of the media and much of the electorate, have prioritised popularity over good government and have, unsurprisingly, ended up with neither.
There seems to be a pivot by Trump from religion (evangelicals) to war (and defence contractors' bottom line). An indication that Trump no longer believes he can go for a third term but wants to collect as many trophies and cash in the next 3 years (or 6 months depending on the mid terms)
That a lot of the reasons things don't feel great (not all, but a lot) follow fairly smoothly from decisions we have democratically made over the decades is just customary procedure. We expect the government to do more, despite reducing and selling off its capacity to do so. The impressive thing is that the plates kept spinning for so long, really.
Population: you.
But they won't let Reform run the country.
The choice is either a big increase in taxes or huge cuts to services , the triple lock going and big cuts to other welfare spending .

I can support that.
