Books (I predict) will do fine. I hope the same can be said for proper covers.
The economics of books are a bit weird, though -- there was an interesting blog post a while back analysing the evidence given in the recent Penguin/Simon & Schuster merger lawsuit: https://www.elysian.press/p/no-one-buys-books . Apparently almost all books are very low sales subsidised by the handful of unexpected breakout hits (think Twilight, Fifty Shades of Grey, etc) and backlist perennials like The Very Hungry Caterpillar. So unless AI can reliably write bestsellers (or reliably identify the bestsellers by reading the slushpile!) I don't think it will upend the business model. Filtering of incoming submissions probably the easiest place to apply it first, I guess.

One of the stands at the Hawthorns is the Halfords Lane Stand, on surprisingly enough Halfords Lane, at the bottom of Halfords Lane is the Hawthorns Station. A ten to 15 minute walk. Back in the day Halesowen Baggies had a fanzine called Last Train to Rolfe Street, Smethwick Rolfe Street station is a bit further away, but not far.

My current favourite is White Peak Distillery/Wire Works, The one I like most that they've got on sale at the moment is the Over Smoke (https://www.whitepeakdistillery.co.uk/product/wire-works-whisky-over-smoke/). but if you see the Necessary Evil finish it's a collaboration with Thornbridge Brewery where both beer and whiskey have been matured int he same barrels (whiskey then beer then whiskey). you can get the beers (https://thornbridgebrewery.co.uk/collections/necessary-evil)

I've tried a few of the St Georges Distillery whiskeys which are nice but not in the same league as wire works.

I need to get myself a bottle or two of Costwolds as what I tasted was nice but heading out on holiday I didn't want to buy a bottle there and then.
  • The best thing the Tories could do now is back PR.
  • Interesting that the SNP are following the Tory playbook.

Sir Keir Starmer has published his Labour manifesto. And what a disappointment it is - limpet close to the Tories on Brexit & more austerity.

But he’ll win a huge majority at Westminster. So strong @theSNP voices will be needed to stand up to Sir Keir & stand up for Scotland.

    https://x.com/MrJohnNicolson/status/1802410488388792340

If I was Starmer I would be praying for a poll showing Labour lead down to 4-5% to put the wind up those tempted to vote SNP/Green/Libdem "as Labour will win anyway"

Stephen Fry likens removing Parthenon marbles to Nazi Germany taking the Arc de Triomphe

    https://amp.theguardian.com/artanddesign/article/2024/jun/17/stephen-fry-parthenon-marbles-british-museum-returned-greece

Stephen Fry is bang on the money.

The argument among Philhellenes has always been that the Greeks invented democracy (except for women, slaves, metics, ie 90% of the population), and that Ottoman rule was totally illegitimate. Hence, the Ottomans had no right to give away the marbles that the
    locals didn’t care about.

The oldest of the new distilleries is St Georges (2006), Wire Works is newer (2018). be aware though, just because they are younger whiskeys it doesn't mean that they are the same as the similar ages Scotch Whiskeys, they mature quicker further south.

Edit: also as they are new distilleries they were designed for taste as opposed to most Scottish distilleries which were designed in the 18th or 19th Century to make as much alcohol as possible

A preposterous argument, or rather a whole bundle of them. 1. Are you giving them no credit at all for "inventing democracy" because they didn't emerge as fully fledged Guardian readers? Do you also sneer at the loser Newton because his equations break down as you approach c? 2. What evidence do you have as to how much the locals cared about the marbles? Point me to a source: primary or secondary, I don't mind. I'll assess it on its merits. Surely you wouldn't be making this claim purely at random and without evidence? 3. Even if you can make the claim good, so what? I imagine 1943 Parisians didn't care much about the arc de triomphe compared to staying alive. Would that justify the nicking of the arc de triomphe?

Or do you just think to that a posh Scotch earl with a classical education from Harrow has more right to Greece's heritage than a bunch of Greeks?

For me cowgate is the story of the weekend. It seems like evidence that the country is ungovernable. I can't understand why the cow wasn't just shot dead in the first five minutes. It is 500 kilos and running around on the road, it could collide with a car or kill a person by running in to it. If either of these outcomes happened then there would be a different complaint investigation/public inquiry to the one that is now happening. Honestly why are they following a cow around for 5 hours and then there is this half measure of hitting the cow with the car?

Reduce immigration? Ok, we’ll stop it. Stop immigration? We’ll repatriate. Repatriating? We’ll do second generation too, then. Etc.

The Tories need their natural-party-of-government mojo back and do the hard yards of rebuilding to appeal to the centre.
Yes, they need a new Cameron/Osborne combo to do all that hard work all over again.

Even then there are more Tories who have gone Reform than still now Tory voting Tories like you and TSE who might go Labour or LD
You show amazing disrespect for conservatives who are needed, like my wife and I, to vote conservative to outnumber Farage

Thank you Doctor. What is your diagnosis for Trump?
Looney tunes. (U don't need to be a Dr to know Biden is not in his right mind, simply to have eyes and an IQ higher than 83!

I start with a decent bottle of red, and get the whisky out for the Scottish seats. Cheese and charcuterie of course.
Water, orange juice and Coke for me to have any chance of doing an all-nighter and still be going for the new PM going to the Palace. Or might attempt a 6-9am kip maybe.

    Southgate out lol.

As a longstanding England fan the novelty of seeing the national team pass and control the ball still hasn’t worn off for me.

Under Rishi yes, I was talking about the Conservative leaders in likely opposition who will probably focus on winning back voters lost to Farage first

Wait Big G. You're married?! This is startling new information I'm going to need some time to process.

No worries. I’ve had my less than glorious moments on here.
GSDs are marvelous. We had a GSD- Border Collie cross years ago. He was a big old boy, but a real gentle giant.

YouTube is full of GSDs fostering kittens. Any intruder interfering with his kittens and the GSD kitten fosterer is content in the knowledge that he could rip the intruder's head off.

Actually does anyone know when the Starmer and Sunak declarations come? Helps to build the shape of the night.

There's normally an estimate of declarations out a few days before

    Then there’s the concession speech.

To outnumber Farage, the Conservatives should only need the one seat. Hopefully Robin Miller is not the holder of that seat.

I love GSDs. My only problem with them is that when my family had them in the 70s it was at the hieght of the Hip dysplasia issue and the dogs were dying young as a result. So we were rather put off them at the time. My understanding is that Kennel Club rules have clamped down on this as a breeding issue so hopefuly it is something that is no longer a major factor.

The Press Association normally do a list- I don't think they've published it yet.

The expected times in 2019 were:
    Richmond 4 am
Holborn & St Pancras 5 am (dafuq? Central London? I blame incompetent lefty councils)
